I haven't been to this place since pre-pandemic, so I decided to give it a go today in support of a local business and a place I frequented in the past. The food and coffee was fine, and the cashier / barista was friendly and polite. Which is more than I can say for whom I presume to be the manager. Waiting, kind of a long time, for a bagel and cream cheese... And wearing my mask as I always do. I Very briefly pulled down the mask to take a quick sip of coffee, not removing the mask, not leaving the mask down. Just a very quick sip and back to full coverage. They must've been watching me like a hawk, because I got a no eye contact yet curt comment. Actually more like command. "Mask must be worn at all times in the store sir". Really? I am the only customer in the shop at the time, I'm standing 9 inches from the door, and I take a sip that takes all of 1.25 seconds. Maybe I'm making more of it than it deserves, but it seems to me a strange way to show customer appreciation, frankly I'm not sure how that person could take their comment / reaction seriously given the circumstances. I am all for safe covered behavior, social distancing and wearing masks. But this appeared to be an excuse to berate a paying customer. read more

For$3.50 I expected a good cup of coffee. Coffeetopia tastes like the same cheap over roasted coffee Starbucks uses and costs $1 more. The food was tasty but could have been a bit bigger for the price. read more

My co-worker usually brings me their breakfast burritos which are so delicious so I wanted to go there myself. I order two burritos which took 20 minutes to be ready and there were not many other customers. I figured out why it took so long, it's because they burnt my breakfast burrito ): I didn't check until I got to work and now I have burnt burrito. read more

I ordered an everything bagel with lox with EASY cream cheese. Very little cream cheese. When handed the bagel, I again, asked did you make sure it has easy cream cheese. The person said yes very it has easy cream cheese. I opened up the bagel and there is a mound of cream cheese on both sides. The clerk paid no mind. Obviously I was unhappy. They walked away as if nothing happened. Won't be back. read more

The coffee is as good as the other coffeetopia's. The service during the week is great but not as good on the weekends. Don't think I'll be going to this one on weekends anymore. The barista seemed to be more concerned about sipping her own coffee and chatting with a friend rather than opening the store up on time. read more

This is one of the newer (well, remodeled anyway) spots of the local coffetopia chain which is the reason that people say local coffee is better then corporate. They have their own parking lot in back, which was repaved as part of the remodel. Part of the repaving was adding a couple of spots which is good because since the remodel this space is busier then ever. There is also about four-five spots in front for street parking that can be easier to get into/out of especially if you are grabbing and going or sitting outside. The inside is so different and new you might as well consider this a brand new shop. One of the drawbacks before is that it was super small. All three tables were rickety and there simply wasn't enough inside space to do anything. All that is in the dust bin of history. There are about a dozen brand spanking new table/chair combos, and space for another dozen or so at the window counters. There's also six to eight outside patio spots replete with shade cover. Pretty much the entire former coffee shop is now the kitchen, which gives the employee's much more room to work in. The products are exactly the same quality as before-this is an excellent spot for a basic cuppa (be it coffee or tea), specialty coffee such as espresso/cappuccino/latte/chai, the smoothies are sheer goodness and the burritos are perfection. The vegetarian/vegan choices are especially good. Flavor wise the vegetarian choices are better then the options that have meat. It's not all good news-the pricing while fair for the area can upon occasion be more then you want. a burrito and coffee will be in the 9-10 dollar range. A basic cup and a sweet will be in the 4-5 dollar range on the short side and a latte/cappuchino/mocha can hit you for 4-5 dollars or more. This is also now an extremely popular spot. There will be lines at any given time, but the good news is that they move fast. This also means that this is becoming a busy not always mellow spot. First world problems, yo. Due to the new layout, dodging the line with the self serve coffee has become harder. The self serve still is easy to get to, but the creamer et al is now around the corner, and you'll still have to line up to pay for your morning (or afternoon slacker) cup of caffeine awesomeness. Might as well just pay the extra dollar and get a pour over with the current layup since you'll be in line either way. Anywhoo all in all this is still one of the most consistent (quality wise) coffee shops in the area, and the make over is just gorgeous. Well done Coffeetopia, well done indeed. read more

The coffee here always tastes a bit strong, and overburnt. Generally though it's pretty good depending on who makes your latte. I thought about leaving 2 stars, but generally speaking the space in this place, and the consistency around the food is solid. My could have been 2 star review would have been based on a dialogue I overheard a tall blonde lady having with two queer customers. She addressed them as girls, and it was pretty obvious they were non binary. When they addressed the issue, and politely asked to be called them or they the barista got really agitated with the 2 customers. Not sure what the tall blonde haired barista was so irritated about? It seemed rude the way she behaved towards them though, like she didn't like being corrected. California is is very "everyone" friendly, if that's a challenge this isn't the right place for you to live. My brother is queer, and I have seen him get picked on a lot. People don't have to go out of there way, but they should at least acknowledge what is obvious, politely. I'll keep coming back, but I hope the tall blonde haired woman learns how to be more polite. This morning when I called in an order they took it with no comment. when I drove there and my wife went in, our order was ready but the server said "you'll have to get in line and wait for the other people to place their order." So she got in line, and they never called her name. Only when she got up to the front - after every other person had placed and received their order - did they give her our order, which had been sitting there since the time we arrived. By now the food and our coffee was cold. When my wife asked, server defended her decision to make us wait, though she was well aware that our order was ready. We do like Coffeetopia and shop their West Side location often. But this is infuriating. In these times lots of us want to call in an order and not stand in line inside. If you cannot handle call ins, just say so. Otherwise we will go to Peet's or other places where they handle the call in orders seamlessly by calling out names when they are ready. read more

Stopped by for a morning bagel and received the best service I've had in a long while, even during this pandemic of all circumstances. The young women who worked here were all kind and generous. I ordered an egg and cheese bagel on whole wheat and received an immaculate bagel. I'd say it might have been prepared better than the local Bagelry's. Just on the outskirts of downtown Santa Cruz. If you're passing by, definitely stop in for a quick pick me up. Ordered a medium iced caramel macchiato and a berry muffin to try. The coffee was AMAZING!!! Better than Starbucks imho. I thought the flavor of the beverage was not too sweet but also enough to flavor the espresso and milk. A tasteful amount of caramel drizzle was added to the cup and was definitely not overpowering. The muffin was nothing special, but we did visit a coffee shop and not a muffin shop. It filled my muffin void, and that's about it. The selection of pastries was so-so. A handful of bagels and muffins to choose from, but no large variety of bakery items. They did offer hot breakfast sandwiches that were made to order. The shop itself is older but does have some charm. We came through on a Thursday morning around 11am and were the only ones inside. The woman running the show was very friendly and quick. Parking lot in back with plenty of spots. The coffee was fairly priced for what you get. Would definitely come back when passing through in the future. read more

I came in town to visit my friend that goes to UC Santa Cruz. Whenever I go somewhere new, I make it a point to go to scope out local coffee shops because they never disappoint. This particular place did. It is a big coffee place where you'll possibly be able to study, read a good book, or meet up with good friends. I scanned the menu, looking at their tea options and wondered if they had a London Fog that may secretly be off the menu like most coffee shops tend to have. When it was my turn to order, I asked if they MIGHT have a London fog. The barrista looked at me in a weird way and said "Isn't that a starbucks drink? I just recently found that out because someone had asked me about that too." She suggested what would be close to it, and I said, "sure" because I like to try something new. While my friends and I were waiting for our drinks to be ready, I guess the barrista thought we couldn't hear her but she said "oh they expect us to know all the teas" also the gentleman that was helping her was was being rude as well. When my drink was called, she had the audacity to be blatantly rude about it. Which was totally uncalled for. One, I asked a simple yes or no question that needed no further comments. Two, make sure you talk bad about your customers AFTER the customer leaves. The drinks that they gave us were garbage too. I used to come here a lot last yr with my ex, but not so much anymore. He still frequents and I do not. Anyways, I usually get a hazelnut latte and a bagel. The latte is usually so-so ($3-$4) and the girls in there are fairly nice. One remembered my drink when I frequented more often. The bagels are the main reason why I go out of my way to come there. I love how they toast them and put the cream cheese on there. They have 4-5 different flavors and they are so yummy! I wouldn't go anywhere else for a toasted cream cheese bagel! I think they run $3.25. The shop is relatively small, maybe 4 tables in there with an additional 2-3 outside. Its pretty laid back in there. I usually order and then wait for my drink before I even pay. They offer drip coffee as well. Also smoothies and other treats (muffins, fruit, sweets). If I am not in the area, I won't stop by. I will head to starbucks which is closer for my drink (and cheaper). They have a small parking lot in the rear of building. And a few spaces on Capitola Rd in front of shop. I rarely write reviews but I felt compelled to post this based on our experience. My friend has an emotional support dog that she brought into the coffee shop and was planning to order a coffee to go. The barista rudely yelled across the bar that dogs weren't allowed. When identified as an emotional support dog and the proper paperwork was produced he said he "didn't care and it's not the law." We will be taking our business elsewhere, and I would highly suggest educating your staff on the laws. read more

Today I was here having coffee & witnessed a group of people come in, one was carrying a dog. One of the employees told them the dog was not welcome, so the girl offered the emotional support dog paperwork, and he said he didn't care and made the dog leave. Then he forgot to make the drink they purchased. I understand he had the right to refuse service to anyone, but I was disappointed to see this happen, and handled the way it was. This is the worst coffee shop in Santa Cruz. The customer service is so bad. The coffee is ok. If you like a smile in the morning with your coffee don't go here. You are greeted with fear and judgement at the register. They should just stay home if they are scared of people. On top of the horrible customer service, they have a really hard time making the drinks correct. I always have to pour some out, so my drink does not spill. They are rude as can be and suck at taking orders. Not sure why this younger generation is so entitled and sensitive to everything and anything. I come to this place because of the delicious and reasonable priced breakfast burritos. They have bacon, tofu and soy chorizo - all delicious when extra toasted. They have bagels that are reasonable prices ranging from $3-$6 dollars. They also have smoothies. I've only tried the Berry Burst which was delicious and perfectly sweet. I like going to the coffeetopia on Portola avenue! The staff is super sweet and very accommodating! One time their espresso machine broke so while they repaired it, they gave out free coffee. I really enjoy their mochas and chai's and bagels. Definitely worth checking out :) read more

Even though they're small locations and are busy most of the time in the mornings, they tend to get your order done very fast and I just love the bagels and the jalapeño cream cheese.
