Lived in the area a long time but never ate at Cogan's until a week ago. Known for excellent pizza, many locals say the best. I would not call the place a pub,more like a joint with the bar being the main part of the restaurant. Wait staff are very casual in attitude and dress, not unpleasant but very laid back. We had individual small pizzas and mine was excellent with plenty of pepperoni. My daughter had a cheese pizza and was very pleased. Lot of typical pub grub on the menu. Pros: this place is open til 2AM. Has a good variety of pizza and appetizer options and a build-your-own. You get a hot pizza even if you show up late at night. The wait staff are nice. And they come with a bar, if you're feeling a drink too. They have outdoor seating that is heated in the winter seasons. And the place is equipped with TVs to watch sports. I've been to Cogan's before (twice). And in all the times I've gone I've had a pizza every time. Since I'm no pizza connoisseur, I can say that at least for the likes of me, the pizza is alright and tasty enough to eat. Though I reckon pizza afficionados might have a lot to nitpick. Cons: Typically the environment can get quite crowded. Since it's a pizza/bar, it can get packed and loud especially on the weekends and late at night. It was also incredibly loud not because there were a lot of people but because a staff member behind the bar was yelling his lungs out reacting to a football game. Since the restaurant only had a few customers, his voice stood out and at times it was incredibly startling and piercing considering how loud the music already was. I typically would not mark off for this considering that this place is made to be loud and lively, but if you're somehow sound sensitive, this might not be the place for you. The waters we got had a musty aftertaste, and we couldn't tell if it was from the water source or the cups themselves. Surprisingly, even though I'm not picky with my pizzas, I had a bone to pick with their pizza today. We ordered the Pirate's Booty, described to contain the ff ingredients: "Pepperoni, ground sausage, salami, green peppers, red onions, black olives, mushrooms, extra sauce and extra cheese - ARGH!" So tell me why my fiancé ate a whole clove of garlic? Not just that, he also ate tooth-breaking, hard as rocks black olive pits added as toppings to our pizza as shown in the below pictures. This is incredibly dangerous for people with brittle teeth so proceed with caution if you plan ordering any pizzas with olives here. I also noticed the veggie toppings were definitely added after the dough was baked with the sauce and some meats. There was no char to them so we had raw onions and peppers. They didn't even melt into the cheese and it was a pain to eat. Not to mention the pizza was also really wet. Not a greasy good kind, but watery bad kind. I even had multiple layers of big onion slices slapped on my pizza slice. And the mushrooms were definitely old. Some of them had a fishy after-taste and you can see the blemishes on them. Funky dive bar atmosphere with covered outdoor seating. Looked pretty dirty. Menu had an adequate selection of pizzas but you had to order the 18 inch to get Neapolitan crust. The smaller size was cracker thin crust. We ordered one Margherita and one cheese and I added pepperoni. The Margherita had large chunks of tomato and whole cloves of garlic. The sauce on the cheese pizza was spicy which we should have been told about in advance. The taste overall was good though and the crust was delicious. Sorry. Probably won't be back. read more

Second time eating here. Got the mediterranean pizza and they did not skimp on the toppings. I think the crust is some of the best around, nice and airy (not too thick or thin). Went here with a group of friends on a week night and the food was way better than I expected. We got a couple of sandwiches in addition to pizza, the pesto mozzarella was my favorite. I flew in super late to Norfolk and was in need of some dinner, and Cogan's was just about the only local spot open. What I thought was a little pizza joint turned out to be a big party for a Wednesday night! I didn't think so many people would be out partying on a Wednesday evening in Norfolk, but apparently they all come to Cogan's. They did karaoke, and it was pretty fun to watch! Because of all of this, it did take quite a while to get our server's attention. You can either get a whole pie or pizza by the slice - pretty cheap for how tasty it is! They also have a lot of great beers on their menu. They were out of a couple that I wanted but I loved what I ended up trying. This is a lively spot if you're looking for somewhere with high energy! Was a awful experience which had nothing to do with the food. Sat on balcony when it began to rain we asked our server 3 times to move down stairs before it started to be a full on thunderstorm. She left and came back 35 minutes later with a pizza which had been rained on puddles of water on top of the food. When asking again she ignored and never came back. The other server didn't allow us to close the curtains with refrained the rain to finally be told by the manager that the servers aren't bring anymore food upstairs because of the rain. Cogan's seems to be a staple pizza spot for the Ghent area. It's always packed with people having a good time. I always say I'll stop by to try it out and so here's that day. I did a pick up for a large pepperoni and basil pizza. There's so many ways to customize the pizza including the base sauce. They also offer vegan pizza with the vegan cheese and cauliflower crust. But since it's my first time, I went with the original marinara sauce. It was still pretty warm by the time I got home. And the cheese was still gooey. There wasn't much basil so that was a little disappointing. The crust was good texture and the pepperoni was ok. It's not the best pizza I've had but in a crunch this place will do since my mom In law lives near by and the pizza size is pretty huge, 16" as their regular size. Growing up, Cogan's was always a very reliable pizza spot. Although I've had takeout many times, I stopped by today to try out their lunch buffet for the first time! The buffet is $10.99 for all you can eat salad, soup, garlic knots, and pizza. Salad was a classic small side salad (mixed greens, onion, tomato, cucumber, and croutons). When we went, the soup was technically "jambalaya" but it was really just a salty gelatinous mess. I could only eat a few spoonfuls. The pizza itself had certainly been killed by heat lamps by the time we got there. Lord knows how long it had sat out. After our first slices each, they thankfully tossed what was sitting there and put out a fresh pepperoni pie. This was NIGHT AND DAY. The first piece I had was some sort of rubbery solidified sausage mess. The pepperoni slice was piping hot, flavorful, with a respectable crust and a huge cheese pull. So I guess it depends on your timing. The garlic knots had also been out all day so the dough itself was a little tough. But I did spoon a little bit of the garlic oil onto my slice of pizza which was a nice touch. I would say you get what you pay for, but it's honestly still a decent value for the amount you can eat. The pizza here is possibly one of the best i've had in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach are. However, the reason i'm only giving a 4 star is because of service. We had to wait 20 minutes before someone comes to take our order. Not a single staff asked if we wanted water or if we're ready to order. So we had to pull a staff aside and ask when our server will be here. She apologized and start taking our order. It was another 7-10 minutes wait for the pizza, which is a reasonable amount of time. And the pizza hit all the right spots for us. Other than wait time, food & our server is amazing. -1 star because of the (no heads up) 40 min wait for our pizza but the wait was worth it! My bf and I have been to Cogan's about 4-5 times within this past year of our relationship, so it's become a familiar, easy dinner date spots. Tonight was a cool, welcoming, talkative vibe- probably the busiest we've ever experienced so that was cool. Our server was super nice! Though there were only 2 servers on a busy, vibrant Saturday night our server made sure to take care of us. Our go-to is the margarita pizza and tonight we decided to add extra basil, remove the chopped garlic (I like my garlic minced/finely chopped), and add prosciutto. This pizza was literally sooooo good, I ate half of it alone (granted I was hungry af but I'm a 130lb 5'5 girl so my bf was kind of impressed). 16 inches for a pizza that's only $18.99 is great, though we didn't realize that every addition is +3.49 so watch out for that The cheese was gooey and flavorful like always, the extra basil was a game changer, and the prosciutto was toasted not too crispy and perfectly! 10000/10 for sure :) We will be coming back, maybe when it's not so busy bc the wait was the only veryyy slight inconvenience. I was at the Ghent location on 1/27/24, and ordered a 5 cheese pizza for a roadtrip with my kid. The pizza was excessively salty and we were unable to eat it. We cannot tell if it was the cheese or the sauce, but it was incredibly inedible. It was unfortunate because we spent $24 + tip and it was the only food we planned to have on the trip; however, we had to throw the whole thing away. Cogans as a whole is a very interesting vibe. Each location has a different feel, slightly different menu, and some type of special or event on a daily basis. (Check their website, not social media pages) This is our "local watering hole" when it comes to meeting up with people for drinks. The service is a little lacking, but that's the nature of the beast with bars! The servers are always very friendly & helpful, they can just be slammed or a little spacey. The bathrooms are TINY at this location, and there are only 2 toilets, unisex. The food is another story. When dining in, the food is always pretty dang good, especially if you've had a few drinks. But when I tell you ordering delivery/pickup is like pulling teeth, I mean it. Our food is almost always incorrect, under/overcooked, or just never comes. Grabbed a quick light meal prior to an ODU basketball game on a week night. We had a group of 8 and were able to snag a large pub style table upon entering. Once all our party had arrived our waitress quickly took our drink orders. We placed our food orders and our food arrived fairly quickly. The hubs and I were completing some work errands in the Norfolk area. We were famished and needed some substance before heading home. The word pizza caught both our eyes when we parked the car. It's almost a reflex to just use yelp to connect us to local businesses that would help feed our stomachs lol. Since Covid restrictions are still in effect, some businesses have been innovative by creating an indoor outdoor eating experience. That is what Cogan Pizza did. This concept helps to cater to customers if the establishment cannot support with the unprecedented rules of Covid of eating indoors, and whatever level the state, town and city is in at the time. Masks are worn upon entry until your seated ready to order. There is happy hour which I posted in the pictures. The bar area was bustling inside so we opted to sit in the outdoor area that was covered in red. It would explain the reddish tones in the pictures. Our waitress was ok with some sass when the hubs asked about the size of individual slices. Moving pass that, we ordered a large New Yorker pepperoni pie and a side of six wings doused with spicy garlic Parmesan. Two glasses of beer I forgot the flavors, but both very good, and I know mine was tarte. The buffalo wings were awesome. It had a great crisp exterior with tender chicken meat with each bite. A good size wing that was not soggy and dried out. The spicy garlic Parmesan flavor is recommended:) The pepperoni pizza was tasty. The dough was a little thicker than I'm used to, but still gave a nice crisp on the crust. A slight flop with the foundation when holding with your hand, but overall taste was good in sauce, cheese and pepperoni. We ate everything and we will be back. Support local businesses!!! read more
