Solid spot to grab some pizza, wings and a drink. They have daily happy hour specials so make sure to check that out when you go in. The pizza is not New York or chicago style but it is solid fresh made pizza. Four stars for the service. Used to go here and play chess or shoot pool with my best friend whilst enjoying a slice. Sentimental location for me, but I make sure to stay honest too. 1. Food. The best pizza in Norfolk is served here. Whether you live in Norfolk or you're just passing through, this is where you can get a quality slice. And you can call in to order carry-out! Food here is amazing. The pizza is best in class with the second best item being the french fries. There's a major discount on extra large pizzas on Saturdays. 2. Service. You can typically get a large pizza and some fries in 12 to 17 minutes which isn't too bad. Service could be faster, but considering how amazing the food always is, I've always been willing to wait a few extra minutes. Wait time has never been excruciatingly long and I've never had to walk out. 3. Crowd. This is a dive-bar/sports-bar hybrid. On Sundays and on early weekday afternoons this is a chill dive-bar where you can get a drink or a slice and shoot some pool. And on week nights and Saturday nights a good chunk of ODU students and other patrons will flood this bar and it'll be brimming with laughter, great pizza, and the various major sports events (most commonly football, baseball, and UFC). Have never seen anything over the top happen, but be advised this bar gets very packed and rowdy at night. Place is less hectic and crowded during the day. 4. Environment. Place is clean. Clean and organized for the aged business that it is. It has a legacy built on sports, symbolized by the jerseys and other sports memorabilia seen throughout including those of players from local sports teams such as the Norfolk Tides or the ODU Monarchs. This bar also has an extensive television setup, so watching the game here on top of being able to get a really good pizza means this place isn't going anywhere anytime soon. 5. History. University Pizza is a hometown staple and withstood the test of time. It put Colley Avenue on the map as a major area of social activity here in Norfolk. Imma dive right in and say this place is freaking great. First off, my friend and I didn't even plan to go here. The brewery next door that we planned to go to was closed, but we saw people sitting outside of University Pizza so we said yolo. We walked in and the man working was welcoming and cool. Told us what's popular there (pizza and subs) and let us sample our beers before getting them. We got the appetizer sampler (choose 3 things) and a 12" italian. Lemme tell you, alllll that shiz shmacked! Starting with the appetizer, loaded fries were awesome, meatballs were nice and hearty, and as a self proclaimed chicken tender connoisseur, I was impressed. The Italian sub was toasty and delicious. This is a top five 757 pizza spot in my opinion. They serve a really good thin pizza, with a tasty sauce and plenty of cheese. Not really NY style, other than in appearance, but really good. The crust is tasty and crisp without being brittle, and is brushed with oil and sprinkped with garlic and herbs. A really good pie overall, a nice local creation. Its located just a few blocks from ODU, so its a great pregame meal before cheering on the Monarchs. Its easily walkable from either the Ted or Foreman Field. Granted, the interior is esentially a college bar, so if you don't like that atmosphere, I suggest takeout. That being said, it is a friendly, welcoming spot. Been going here for 2 years as a place to get cheap drinks with my friends. This place has taken a lot of my business from old favorites just based off their service alone. Tonight was the second time this month my family and I got ignored at another local restaurant, this time at another pizza spot, but came here and got served immediately. The pizza was pretty good as Always, but the service is where it's at for me. With only one bartender/server working, We got our drinks and placed my pizza order in a matter of 3 mins, even with her single handily serving a Half full bar and people sitting on the patio, she still managed to check on us periodically. The brunette bartender with humorous sarcastic attitude is hands down reason enough to check this place out. read more

Saturday evening we had a little shindig and when it came time to eat everyone wanted pizza. Not factory pizza from one of those delivery places, no we wanted real mom & pop pizza. We decided to go to University Pizza over on Colley. It's been a couple of months since I was last here and this evening we had 8 people in total. No problem at all there's plenty of seating inside and out front under the canopy. One of the things I really like about U.P. is it has a really good neighborhood vibe to it. You get an even mix of the local residents and college students. My part of the group had the family special which was a large one topping pizza and a huge salad bowl that's probably large enough to serve 4 people. Their large is easily the size of extra large pizza at most places, yet it's a thin NYC style pie. For beer aficionados they have many micro brews in the case as well. In the back there's a pool table you can pass the time on while waiting for your pie, daily specials, large screen TVs and a full bar. You could call it a Pizza Pub. Had ordered from University once before, meat ball pizza, not my favorite, but lots of meat balls and good sauce. Ordered tonight xlarge cheese w/ pepperoni. This xlarge pizza had 12 pepperoni, that's not allot for a xlarge pizza. Walked up for lunch with the kid today. Not too busy, but had a group of (I'm assuming) regulars hanging out. Several local business shirts represented (Daniel's Garden Center, Bent Fork, Charlie's) nice to see local supporting local. They serve Pepsi as opposed to Coke. blech. why? I did notice tat they do support a couple local breweries with draft selections from O'Conner and Smartmouth. The menu is very limited, a few bar apps, pizza, subs, wings. The kid was in a sandwich mood and went with the meatball. I have never really developed any kind of fondness for a meatball sub, so I didn't even ask for a bite. I ordered a small pizza (pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, and onions). It was pretty damn good, and big for a small. My only complaint would be that the crust could have been a bit crisper. once it got away from the edge, it was soft. The sauce was a a little sweet (much preferred over tangy), and no skimping on the cheese! Also love that they use a sliced sausage as opposed to crumbled ground sausage. So much better. I ate two of the four slices, and carted the rest home. I was nice enough to share one with my wife when she got home...good cold too, but really what pizza isn't (if not even better). I ordered pizza from here tonight and I'm so disappointed. The pizza crust was so thin but also very hard. It kinda hurt my teeth toward the crust of the pizza. It seems as if it was preformed. It was also very heavily seasoned with what I assume is Italian seasoning. The cheese fries were good. That's the only reason I'm giving it two stars. The wings were extremely seasoned. What's this place like? Just read the name. BIG college hang out. Pizza and great drink specials, what else would you really expect? Been here a number of times and always have had a decently good time. I usually stop in for the pizza. I can taste the love that's been put into it...(I pray to God that it's love that I'm tasting) I like the make your own, I believe 4 toppings of your choice are included. My fave: Pineapple Mushrooms Tomatoes & BACON, because a pizza isn't complete without it! University Pizza has an ok beer selection, but I get it... college students are looking for more quantity than quality... Hey it's all good with me, just as long as they keep making good pizza. I went here tonight as part if a social gathering and not my own doing. I had never heard of this place even though I attended ODU for both my bachelors and masters degrees. They have a decent selection of draft beers, including some good local brews. Its really nice to see the local restaurants supporting the other local businesses. They even had a few good bottled beers. I didn't have a mixed drink, so I can't comment on that. Service was very slow, but there was only 1 poor girl working the bar and the tables, so it was more understanding (although not excusable by any means). It took a good 45 minutes to an hour for the food to arrive. The food wasn't too good. My friend got the spaghetti and meatballs, and the noodles were very overcooked in the sauce was swimming in water. He had to drain the water out of the meat sauce to eat it. The fries looked as if it were pulled out a frozen bag. The food lacked basic seasoning. I didn't get a chance to try the pizza, but I will say a few pies walking by looked decent. Basically, this looks like a standard place to drink for college students. Most college students probably arent expecting great food, just a place to get cheap drinks and a slice of pizza. Me personally, I probably would only go back under the same conditions, and if i did, it would be for drinks on a special night MAYBE some pizza. read more

This pizza reminds me of a New York style pizza, in its bendyness. The sauce is spicy-good and the cheese sufficient. Had the pizza been pulled out of the oven and eaten, it would gave been bliss. Sadly it sat (I watched) and the cooked oily crust allowed the cheese and pepperoni to slide when bitten into. I suggest the staff box the pizza WHEN it has finished rolling down the auto-oven rails. read more

Worst pizza ever. Bought a groupon for this place and called in the order to go. The guy working the counter was NOT happy at all that I used the groupon. He was a total jerk about it. I waited about 5 minutes for the pizza and was on my way. We ate the pizza not 10 minutes later. It was soooo soggy. The crust was uneven and undercooked in some places. It was just mush. This is probably one of the best bars in Norfolk to kick it with friends. It's clean and has a good vibe inside. If you're a smoker you'll have to step out onto the patio, but that's kind of nice because it keeps the inside fresh. The bartenders and even the cooks are extremely friendly and go above and beyond good service. The food is solid, nothing to write home about, but after a few drinks pizza by the slice or a few wings is yummo. It's rarely too crowded and there's a good age range among the people that go here. In short this place is way better than Pizza Inn (that's what it used to be before they went out of business) If you've never been to university pizza, trust me you should get a few friends together and go check it out. read more

OK, so, I love going here, but have yet to get off my butt and write the review. Plenty to say here too. UP does it right by making this out to be the place to hang out no matter what your into. First, yeah, beer. Purple Haze in the fridge. Always a sign that you found a place that cares!!!! The pizzas are outstanding. Something in the crust is just a little different and delicious, and Pep outside the cheese, just like your supposed to, and really fresh salty Mozzerlla cheese.. Greek Salad is great. Fresh ingredients and the rolled meats are terrific.. oh, and PLENTY of Feta, gotta have the Feta. Now, my most enjoyable surprise, the wings!!! Not sloppy, saucy, and dry miniature chicken-jerky legs, but a well cooked and seasoned, meaty wings, on Sundays, you can load up at 40 cents each!!! The service was NOT GOOD and I have no idea what the food taste like. Our group of 8 arrived at noon for lunch. A party of 6 was leaving and that left our party and 2-3 at the bar. We all order within 3-5 minutes of being seated and our drinks take 10-15 minutes and the waitress mixes them up...FAIL #1. The sliced pizza orders come out the quickest, say 10 minutes after the drinks. If you are keeping track, we have been inside for approx 30 minutes and 2 of 8 have their food. Then the sandwiches come every 5 minutes and the waitress can't keep them straight either, several people get the wrong sandwich, FAIL #2. Finally after 1 hr and 5 minutes, my sandwich arrived, while one member of the group departed to go back to work, and the other 6 are complete with their lunch. So, it's time to head back to work and I go ahead and ask for the sandwich to go. A couple of minutes later, the waitress returns with my wrapped Sandwich and the bill. Mine bill reflects full price for the sandwich and drink, which, OBTW was never refilled! After several questions regarding the tardiness of our sandwiches throughout the last 30 minutes and several responses of "it'll be a few more minutes" and 6 sandwiches arriving separately over 5 minutes, YES, I was fully expecting some sort of compensation for waiting 65 minutes, FAIL #3. So, one slightly positive note, I decided not to take the sandwich and hand it back to the waitress when settling the bill, telling her I would pay for the Diet Pepsi, and she said don't worry, they would pick up the $1.89 single, non-refilled soda and they keep the sandwich. And might I mention, if you were a single sitting at the bar, your sandwich came out within 5-10 minutes. Bottom line: Single waitress and single cook at lunch equals poor service and SLOW food prep. Go as a single and sit at the bar with full anticipation of bad service and slow food prep. read more

Not sure if was an "off" night for the kitchen but it took them an hour to get one of our small pizzas out. The other one came later after we cancelled it so we told them to take it back.
