As a man who will travel unlimited miles for food, you should be surprised that I have never had a pasty before. Especially since I live in Michigan and travel north frequently. For the longest time, I thought they were only things of fairytales, like unicorns or pockets. But you can't travel 8 feet in the UP without being beckoned by a pasty shop. And because I'm me, I completely missed my opportunity until I was at the Michigan/Wisconsin border. But fear not! I wouldn't be writing this review if I HADN'T had one! So this pasty establishment was quaint. It had a drive through, a table in the inside and a table on the outside. I mess with that. Sometimes you don't need the extras. Now, as I learned about the pasty, it seemed like the most basic one was beef and rutabaga. Now, everybody knows that nobody knows what a rutabaga is. It's just one of those things that show up in recipes. And because I'm trying this for the first time, I want the full effect. So bring on the baga! Ok, so, since it was nice outside, I decided to sit on the picnic table. They gave me my pasty on a plate with utensils and I ordered 4oz of brown gravy to go with it. I split that bad boy down the middle like the Red Sea and waterboarded it with my gravy. Took a deep breath and dove right in. Listen. I still might not know what a rutabaga is, but I didn't let a single little square of them escape. Everything was hot, the crust was flaky, the gravy thiccc. Why did I never know these things were basically pot pies? I LOVE pot pies. It was gone in minutes. Just wiped out. Like Thanos snapping his fingers. There was nothing I didn't like about it. It was everything a first timer should have experienced. Pot Pie's Cute Older Sister, Pasty 10/10. A couple side notes: If you see my photos, you see I chose milk as my drink of choice. That's because I haven't had milk in three days and I was getting cranky. The only ONLY thing I would suggest, is they invest in either heavier duty plastic utensils or metal ones. Made it a little hard to cut into the bottom where the crust is rolled together. Certainly not something important enough to lose a star over, because honestly, you could punt this thing into a brick wall and I would happily eat it off there. read more

Best pasty aside from the ones my grandma would make at home. You can tell they've perfected it. Service was excellent- major props for the young lady that served us with fabulous piercings and tattoos. Polite, so smiley, I was already excited to eat my pasty but then having someone that nice ask me if I wanted ketchup made me more excited. A local told us that this is the one and only pastie shop she will ever eat at, so we had to stop! When we arrived the owner was working the counter and the other employees were in the back cranking out all the different types of pasties. We chose the special Empanada pastie and asked the owner which one he recommended and he said the beef and rutabaga. They came out piping hot and fresh! It was recommended to try the pastie alone but then use hot sauce for the empanada and a must is ketchup on the beef pasties. By themselves they are very good and hearty, but with the addition of the hot sauce and ketchup it just took them up a notch and enhanced the flavor. If we are ever back in the Upper Peninsula we will definitely be hitting up Colonel K's for more. If you passing through on your way home you can get them frozen to go as well. read more

Greetings. Colonel K's is a very small drive through or walk in pasties fast food restaurant. They have fun window paint on their windows and a very colorful inside with merchandise and drinks. When I walked in I was greeted by the cashier and was shown the menu. After ordering I was surprised to find that they have all their pasties prepared in a heated oven for immediate delivery. The whole process took about 5 minutes, not to mention the workers had other customers and drive through. The pasties remind me of Shepards pie and was more on the dry and slow cooked side. (pretty sure to can go in too) I don't get to Menominee to often, but when I do I always load up on a bunch of frozen pasties to lock up in my freezer until I get the need for some Cornish tradition. Convenient location if you're driving to/from the UP. Drive-thru service was pleasant and quick. Be aware, however, that the drive-thru lane can only accommodate a handful of cars before it spills out into the street. Prices were reasonable. Pasties were hearty and tasty for the most part. The only disappointment was the ham & cheese. We agree with the previous reviewer that it tasted more like potato than ham & cheese. But that didn't prevent us from stopping here a second time to pick up a couple frozen pasties to take home. We give Col K's 4 1/2 stars but will round up to 5. read more

This has become an annual stop for us on our way south from the DeYoung zoo. Just a small roadside stop with drive thru service. I'm not much of a pasty fan but these are pretty good. Had the Ham and Cheese. It was very good. The crust was delicious. The only reason it wasn't 5 stars is there was maybe 75% potato and only 25% ham and cheese in the filling? I'll admit, I'm biased, because I am a Florida child and going off of a family history of Col K's love. But hey, my family's traditions are worth following because I absolutely love this place. I don't have a huge frame of reference for pasties - I've done Col K's, some place in Escanaba whose name escapes me, some frozen types I've found in Green Bay grocery stores, and a few homemade attempts. Col K's wins every time. It could be nostalgia-tinted lenses I"m looking at it through - it's a tradition that when we visit Mom's hometown we get pasties here, usually a hot rutabaga and beef or cabbage and beef for right there and a bunch of frozen ones to go. But if they weren't good, I wouldn't keep going out of my way to get them and "smuggle" them back to Florida, would I? Yes, I make a point that a half dozen or so make it back with me to my freezer so when I'm homesick for my real home (though born and raised in Florida, I should've been a Wisconsin/UP girl) - I have a little taste waiting for me after 45 min in the oven. The crusts are wonderfully flaky and the crimped edges are delicious dipped in brown gravy (they can get a little tough after a few months in freezer status). The fillings are generous and seasoned lightly so you still taste the bittersweet cabbage or tangy rutabaga through the rich beefyness. The prices are more than reasonable, and I love that they have frozen custard too because that's another up north treat that I jump at the chance to grab when I see it. Went here for the first time today after passing it for years. We had breakfast pasties (did not know there were such a thing) and they were delicious. Tasted very fresh and were nice and warm. Who doesn't love an authentic pasty from the U.P. of Michigan? We stumbled on this place a few years ago, moved a way, came back and was delighted to find them still open and serving their amazing pasties! They offer traditional pasties, and their 'specialty' pasties. I tried the broccoli cheese pasty and I was not disappointed as usual. They offer bottled drinks and have their soup of the day as well. This is a small place and serve customers mostly out of the drive thru or pick up orders, but they do have a couple tables inside for inside dining. If you like pasties, this is the place to go, unfortunately only the drive through is open but you can still get hot pasties to eat outside or take home or stock up on a full menu of frozen ones. In my humble opinion, the beef and rutabaga is both the classic pastie and their best flavor. They are big with a perfect homemade crust and plenty of filling, one could easily be dinner for two people. We drove up here for an authentic upper peninsula pasty. We weren't disappointed. The place is small. There is a counter and one table for dining. They seem to do more business at the drive up window or carry out. There are several varieties of pasties. I got the original beef and rutabaga. My wife got the breakfast pasty. The were ready immediately as they were pre-made and in a warming oven. Mine was very good, seasoned just right. I think the warming oven caused it to be a little dry. They do have gravy available, but I opted not to have any so I could savor the pasty its self. I had a bite of the breakfast pasty. It reminded me of a breakfast hot pocket. It was also very good. Both crusts were golden brown and crispy. They offer frozen custard also which we did not try. The day's flavor was pistachio. There is a small souvenir stand in the small diner which has an upper Michigan theme. My advice if you go, is order carry out or go through the drive up. I've never been to the actual establishment, but one of my mom's coworkers brings us pasties from here every so often. When we were first introduced to the pasties, we became hooked instantly. We always get the Rutabaga. Actually, it was our first time having Rutabaga as well. We usually eat them with melted American Cheese and add some special seasoning to it.
