At this Ace everyone is always very friendly and helpful towards me- I always find what I need. Sometimes I stand around waiting for help because I do not know where to find things, and there may only be 1 or 2 people on staff helping other people, or they may be in back, but they always help me as soon as they see me. One thing I like to utilize is the online order pick up which is very convenient. One time I called the store to ask to ask if they had an item, and when I got there they had it already out for me, I thought that was great customer service. I hope this Ace stays here forever it is so convenient for the neighborhood. Also I scored a blow up Baby Yoda Halloween decoration here, so I am happy. read more

Not my first choice of location, but this is where my item was shipped to. Literally was asked what I was waiting for. I said I'm here for a pick up. The reply, "oh, my boss is doing paper work, you'll have to wait " I'll stick to my preferred location on Lawrence. read more

If it was my understanding Cook county passed an ordinance a while back and which you couldn't smoke indoors in the public place. As soon as you walk into this location and especially once you get to the back by the hardware and to get your keys made huge strong odor of cigarette smoke. Or does Elmwood Park not fall under this ordinance? read more

Best thing about this place is the service! If you need advice on how to do something, these are the guys to see, and they'll have the parts you need that the BIG home stores won't carry. When you consider that you may save a buck or two on something at big box store, but will have to deal with an associate that will know less than you about your project, this place is a bargain! I'm impressed! Called on my way there to see if they had a specific lock, guy on the phone was incredibly helpful and talked to me like a friend - in a genuine, non-fake manner. He really knows his stuff! When I arrived to the store, I was approached within 15 seconds by an associate who asked if I needed help, I told him I had spoken to someone on the phone, and he directed me to the guy in the back. He was very quick to help me and was very informative and helpful. Great store and great employees! Keep up the good work. Also, they have a small parking lot in the back. read more

This Ace Hardware has saved my buns and $$$ many times when I lived in the neighborhood. Owner Larry and the staff are fantastic whether you have a plumbing, electrical, carpentry or painting problem. They know their stuff! Example: I had a ceiling fan where the pull chain broke INSIDE the housing. I thought I was faced with buying a whole new fan because I could not see where you could just replace the switch. (OK, I'll admit, I'm not the sharpest crayon in the box when it comes to home repairs.) Instead of immediately going to a big box store and buying a new fan, I decided to take a trip to my friends at Ace Hardware on Harlem Avenue. I explained my problem to Larry. He found the right switch and sketched a diagram of how to remove the switch from my existing fan. It took me 5 minutes to replace once I knew what to look for. This is just one example of how they saved me money. In another instance, he saved me the cost of a new bathroom faucet by special ordering a cartridge (that no one else was interested in ordering for me) for a leaky faucet. Ten years later that faucet was still working fine after we sold the house. These are just two examples of excellent service we experienced in over 20 years of doing business at Colandrea Ace Hardware. If you want OUTSTANDING service from people that know what they are talking about, this is the place to go. I can't say enough good things about Larry and his Uncle, and the rest of the staff at Colandrea Ace Hardware. You won't get service like this at the big box stores. Forget Lowes and Home Depot down the street. This is like your dad's workbench, but better. It comes with a dad! Not really, but the helpful guys remind me of my dad and how he could fix anything. There is a reason why stores like these need to be around and that is because of the knowledge and experience that comes with it. I went in for galvanized poles (one end threaded the other not)and Mr. Colandrea cut them to spec. I know Big Box stores would have not been able to do so, at least not willingly. Mr. Colandrea was able to offer advice on the project that I was working on, which is always a help. He also has a lovely sense of humor. While there may only be a couple people working there, I would rather wait knowing I don't have to run around and find someone to help me, which leaves me exasperated and in a foul ass mood which I usually get from Big Box stores. Great service at a neighborhood hardware store without having to walk through a warehouse to grab one little thing. You can always find someone to help you find stuff and give you good advice on your home projects. They don't have all the stuff the big guys do -- like lumber and a lighting -- but I think they have some of the small stuff the big guys don't -- like small plumbing parts and nuts and bolts. read more

I wanted to add to my previous review, but the system no longer seems to have the function to add. This review of Colandrea Ace is actually better than before, and shows how important these kinds of stores are for the neighborhood. They came up and made a key for my 1933 Pierce Arrow, gave me step by step instructions and supplied the cylinder to update the 100 year old casement lock in my front door, and yesterday, they went beyond the call of duty. Having an old car, I have a car trailer for long distance travel. I have a Dodge Ram 3500 Diesel dually for towing, and it's equipped with a load equalizing hitch. The hitch itself is a pretty massive affair, slides into a receiver on the frame, and has arms and safety arms with chains for breakaway protection, When I got the hitch, one arm was held on with a rusty cotter pin, the other with a bent bolt. Wanting to get the correct fasteners in there, I hauled the 100 pound piece to the back counter and showed it to Chris. He went through their huge assortment of bolts and found the correct ones, not threaded on the load area but only on the ends, and replaced both fasteners with the correct bolts. Total charge, under $5.00. In my mind, this level of service simply blows me away. Could you imagine doing this at a bog box chain? We have to keep stores of this sort alive, and now, I buy just about all of my hardware items from them, even if they might be a little more expensive. They aren't, however, necessarily more expensive, and I have been surprised that they are often less expensive than the big boys. The store, having been there pretty much since my childhood (I'm pushing 70) is a little disorganized and could use an update, but Larry was telling me today that they are expanding their merchandise line and are doing a makeover on the store. My special parts store, great service and good advise....

The only reason I go to this horrible store is to make keys this is the second time they give me not working keys making me lose my time and money. That's the only reason a normal person should go there for there is absolutely nothing in stock in this store, old dirty and with almost 2 employees for the whole store so don't waste your time and go somewhere else read more

If I could give them less I would . The people employee at the back smoke in side the store . The whole back of the store smell like cigarettes. I asked the customer, if they smell the same thing too and they said they did and that they had to leave the store because the smoke smell was too much for them. So it wasn't just me and another person said they seen them smoking in the store . I told the cashier so don't know if she let them know I was there 1/6/17 at around 2/2:30. read more
