Upon entering this establishment it was obvious there were some good things going inside, we grabbed a few stools at the half filled counter being all the tables were filled with customers stuffing their faces. I tried to get a look see at what the diners were having, but not wanting to be a busy body I decided to wait on the menu which arrived with a big o' how ya'll doing and whatcha drinking honey - yep I'm in the place I wanted to be. We got here at the transition from the breakfast menu to the lunch menu although most were enjoying their morning meal. Hey I'm pretty easy I'll flip the page and look at what's for lunch. We scanned the options displayed on the worn handmade menus, mine looked like it had been rolled to swat flies (I'm joking) it was clean - while we are speaking of clean the staff were constantly wiping down everything and the kitchen staff was doing the same. Uhm it was only seconds until I found the fried pork chops although fried pork is always enticing I had to ask my friendly server if they were bone-in and she smiled and said of course they are sugar and they are delicious, my search ended at that moment and I ordered two fried crispy, in my opinion rendered pork fat is irresistible I got fries and Lima Bean, we also ordered a hand formed freshly prepared cheese burger I was okay with sharing although a whole pork chop for a half a burger isn't a good trade in my opinion (fortunately she wasn't interested) so I was somewhat relived - okay the pork chops were heavenly I mean almost my MeMa good she fried hers in lard so it wasn't an even playing field but no doubt these are some stellar chops - the Lima Beans were delicious as well but the portion was too small for my liking next time I'm skipping the fries and doubling up on the beans. The burger I'm told was phenomenal (maybe I should of bartered a little harder) it looked amazing and the amount of pickles made it especially good I'm told. When I want fried shrimp today, Musselwhites is my goto place. Just as Osteens, the shrimp are two biters fried with a similar breading. As with Osteens, the dinners come with two sides and there is a large selections of fresh country sides to choose from. The hushpuppies are just as good as Osteens. They also serve a Menorcan seafood chowder here just as good or even better than the Osteens version and there is a fresh bottle of Dattle Sauce on the table to spice this red chowder up another notch or two if you are so inclined. We live in Green Cove, and it is about a 30 min drive to Musselwhites (one traffic light until you get to Palatka). I was taken aback at how this was handled because she knew I had been waiting a while and just ignored me. I understand that things get busy but this could be handled so much better. How about a sign on the door so I know upfront and don't waste 30-40 minutes of my day waiting for nothing? I left Berndt Ends that day and vowed never to return until they get staff that is friendlier and better suited to serve. This area in Florida has plenty of smoked meats and barbecue to choose from. While Berndt Ends sells a stellar product their customer service is so lacking, I would rather go to a place that is almost as good where I am treated fairly and, dare I say, even nicely.
