It's a little hole-in-the-wall diner that only serves breakfast, and there's one person doing all the work. Having said that, it's a job well done. All the food is made fresh in-house, including all bread products and the corned beef hash. She has weekly pancake specials (one pancake is the size of the plate, nobody has ever eaten more than 2) and she serves them with REAL maple syrup. Today I had the challah bread French toast, which was homemade, dusted with powdered sugar, 2 inches thick and fabulous. It's best to call ahead to make sure she has space; she has 5 small booths and a counter. Also, as the attached rules say, she only takes cash, Venmo or PayPal. Coleen herself can be a bit high-strung at times, but she's a hard worker who cares about quality and a good experience for her customers. I can respect a business that follows through on their expectations of their business model and clientele. At Coleen's kitchen, you see that right on the cover of their menu: profanity, loud noises (and children), and cell phone ringtones are not tolerated. On the other side of that coin, Coleen herself enforces these rules and backs up her quality through her great service and food. It took me a little while one morning to realize that I was being served by Coleen herself. Her sassy and quick witted responses reflect the amusing decor that I noticed while eating. Also, she knew every patron's name that came through the door. I know Brockport isn't a large town but I was really impressed by that. Lastly, she handled seating, taking orders, and also cooking the food with grace and efficiency. You can definitely see the pride and sweat equity involved in this place from her. Now, on with the food. I ordered the Sausage Omelette with Wheat Toast. Damn, it was good. The serving size was perfect and she didn't hold back on the meat! It had a good mix of veggies and didn't taste like an over-oiled mess. Awesome! In other breakfast spots I'm used to having toast loaded with so much butter that it's a soggy pancake by the time its served. NOPE. It was lightly buttered and crispy, just the way I like it! Coleen's is an excellent place to get a casual breakfast or lunch. Coleen bakes her own pastries and bread in the morning, and makes amazing soups, quesadillas, and sandwiches from scratch for lunch. It's a particularly good place for gluten-free diners. Coleen goes out of her way to make sure she has GF options, including rice wraps for lunch quesadillas and even french toast and pancakes! She's also careful about cross contamination and checking ingredients. Great breakfast spot! Coleen is truly one of a kind....not only does she own the establishment but she also is the only cook, hostess, cleaner, etc. She's got things down pat! With Covid right now you have to call ahead as her seating is limited but it's never been a problem getting a table. She also does take out if you want it. Oh! She not only does everything there....she also bakes all the breads fresh daily! Soooo good! Homemade fresh bread can't be beat! And she doesn't skimp. The portion sizes are always big! My husband and I always have enough to take home for breakfast the next morning. We've gotten her 4-egg....YES! 4 egg omelette and her French Toast. The French Toast is two slices of heaven that take up an entire dinner plate and the bread is thicker than the fork! And the maple syrup is real maple syrup and the coffee if from a local roaster. Driving thru town and decided to give it a try. Very welcoming when we came in even though we didn't call ahead ( she works alone and is limiting seats. High backs on benches with cleay shower curtains on front. I had the Challah bread french toast, scrabbled eggs and bacon ( oven cooked). Was in town for my daughters college orientation. I was looking for a local place to have breakfast and just found Coleen's kitchen. Since my daughter will be her for the next 4 years I will be back. Coleen's Kitchen is the proverbial hole in the wall in all the good sense. A long counter on 1 side and booths on other side. Makes it difficult to support groups larger than 4, but you will get over it. Always has a pancake special. Today's special was Carrot Cake pancakes. I didn't have them but they looked good. I had the other special, Spicy Turkey, tomato and cheese on a home made roll. It didn't disappoint. I added the home fries, cooked to order and a little crispy as I asked. The owner was the cook, cashier and bus person. She was polite and funny. While I was there several local regulars came in. You could tell she knows her customers. Even the mail carrier came in for a home made fresh peach muffin. Prices were reasonable and I am leaving satisfied. I will return. So should you. read more

I was not a fan of this place. I was in the area with my boyfriend visiting family. We came here for an early lunch one day and it was almost empty inside. The main thing that we didn't like about this place was the staff. We felt extremely unwelcome and like we didn't deserve to be eating there. The owner was behind the bar talking to some regulars about the people that come in to eat. Said that she hates when out of town people come in because they don't know the rules and don't deserve to eat where the locals do...obviously she had never seen us before so she knew what she was saying and who her real audience was. She was rude when taking our order and hated that we asked what was in the soup, lots of eye rolls and huffs during the different interactions. When I first came to Brockport and got the 411 on which restaurants were good in downtown. Coleen's Kitchen was one of the places everybody who had ever stopped in raved about. They talked about how she runs the quaint little place all by herself even though her restaurant is normally pretty full from the time she opens until she closes, she prepares all of her baked goods like bread, bagels and pastries fresh the night before and she is super friendly even when she's being torn in five different directions. From this description I knew I had to go for breakfast one day to see what all the fuss is about. I opened the door to a whirlwind of mouth-watering smells and one little lady with glasses flitting around the warm, energetic space. She promptly came over to the beginning of the counter where my friend and I were waiting to be seated. She welcomed us and ushered us over to the first booth which was just the right size for three people at the max. She explained we were to help ourselves to beverages which she had arranged at the front of the restaurant and that she'd be back shortly to take our order. At this point I had gotten up, made my hot chocolate and sat back down to peruse the menu. It had all the breakfast necessities and the best part was it was all fresh. Since I had been craving French toast that's what I decided on and my friend chose to order the pancakes. After Coleen took our order we sat and talked for a while watching her balance cooking the meals with conversing with patrons, giving people their food, cashing people out, taking people's orders and clearing off tables. She came back once to quickly and politely leave two bottles of homemade syrup on the table and then arrived with our food. It was amazing. I am craving her French toast just writing this review. It was perfectly cooked to a light brown with cinnamon in the mixture and her homemade bread was huge. The portion was two slices which filled the entire plate and then some. I didn't have another thought but to dig right in. It tasted just as good if not better than it looked. My friend's pancakes were just as large and smelled fantastic as well. After the meal we got our things together and stood by the register while Colleen came over to cash us out asking how the meal was and wishing us a good day. Overall my experience at Coleen's, I've gone back several times since, has been everything you could ask for: great food in a great atmosphere with a great hostess. The only thing I would warn about is that it does get really full sometimes. There are only approximately six booths down along the wall and the tall diner chairs for seats since the space is on the small side. It works in creating a welcoming and intimate space especially since Coleen is only one person but for a group larger than four it can be a tight fit. However Coleen does a great job of accommodating everyone. I've seen groups of six seated happily at one of the booths before and have sat in the tall chairs myself one or two times. Even if you can't stay I would recommend you at least order to go. Coleen's food is to die for. read more
