Made reservations for 6:15 and were seated right away when we arrived, which was a great start to the evening. Our server, Holly, was super friendly and personable. She even gave us a heads up that she was also handling a 7-top table and made sure we could get our order in before theirs since it was just the two of us. Thought that was really thoughtful and great service. We started with the salsa, queso, guacamole, and a Caesar salad for appetizers and everything was delicious. A great way to kick off the meal. For the main course we both went with the steak fajitas. The steak was a little on the tough side, but overall still really good and heavily seasoned. The portion is generous too. One order could easily be split between two people. It comes with rice, beans, cheese, pico, and three tortillas. The restaurant itself is super charming. It's inside the historic Taos Inn and you can really feel the history in the space. The atmosphere alone makes the experience memorable. I wasn't sure if I should review under the Historic Taos Inn or Doc Martin's. The seating is split with the restaurant being off on one side and then open seating for just more casual drinks and dining in the Taos Inn main lounge area which was where we sat. The architecture of this place is truly majestic. I think this place has been around for well over a hundred years. I had peaked inside about two years ago but they were sadly closed for drinks and food at the time. Came back on my birthday on a Friday night. Initially, we were going to get dinner across the street but there was a 45 minute wait. Then it started pouring after we settled down to drinks so it was decided we were staying there. Which I didn't mind. It has a quaint rustic atmosphere and there was live music playing. For drinks I ended up ordering the Santa Fe nut brown ale (which I've had before and it's become my go to beer in New Mexico) and later a Teller Green chile martini. The martini was spicy to the right level and very smooth. For food I went with the smothered burrito platter with brisket meat that comes with a side of rice and beans. Boy oh boy was it smothered! Half with the red and half with the green. Because ya gotta try em both, amiright? The brisket was very tender and the sauces were exceptionally delicious. My boyfriend had some kind of southwest chicken torta sandwich and his mom had a burger. All in all, It was decent food and probably way more affordable than the other place. Motor lodge restaurants can be all over the place, with such large variations in clientele, timetables (those who are always in a hurry), and expectations. Our visit on a busy Sunday holiday weekend was better than we expected, in service, atmosphere and food quality. It is part of a National Register building and has the southwestern Rustic them down. Service was really solid, especially since they probably had more tables to serve than normal. Show some patience and kindness to your servers. The cocktails were solid--no doubt why the bar is popular. Highly recommend the elote dip--a very tasty appetizer! The New York strip plate was a lot of good food--with a perfectly grilled medium rare steak along with a cheese enchilada and pinto beans. The food was okay however the price and portion size didn't match. The food was not flavorful and the beans on my plate were very under cooked that they were crunchy. I had a nice conversation with him and a local sitting at the bar. I had the tacos platter. It came with 3 tacos and I did one ground beef, one chicken and one mushroom. All were really tasty. The salsa was a bit spicy but not too bad. Good rice and beans. Not too heavy. Overall a nice taco platter. For dessert, I had the chocolate lava cake. This had a good lava center. Booked a reservation here for NYE over 2 months ago over the phone. No mention of a prefix menu or min of $90 per person menu. Who wants duck, snapper or eggplant parm for $90 anyway. They sprung this requirement on us when we arrived. We left to drive 50 minutes back to Red River and they ruined our NYE special dinner. I asked the locals about a good place to eat that was walking distance and this place wasn't mentioned. I wanted good New Mexican food that had a decent margarita....easy task right? Reviews on this restaurant are mixed so I went with an open mind. Overall, we had a great experience. Very busy location but we went early enough we could have eaten inside or out. Luckily, I asked the host if they were going to eat at the restaurant, where would they sit. She pointed us to the corner of the restaurant that had a couple steps down and seems out of the way of everyone but close enough to hear the music and feel apart of the vibe. If this small space is open...TAKE IT. Drinks - Awesome! If you're on the Margarita Trail, we had the Hot Mama and I Need a Miracle. The hot mama had a kick but not too spicy to enjoy. The "I need a Miracle" was very good and uses a house made lime juice mixed with pomegranate liqueur. Probably best margs we had all weekend. Ambiance - Busy but was still able to hear live music. Staff is very busy but we got a lot of attention. Food - Pretty good authentic New Mexican food. We had the Sweet Potato with Mole Tamale for an appetizer..amazing. Easily shared with 2 people. We also ordered the Carne Asada and Ribeye Fajitas. Both meals were cooked as directed (Medium) and I wouldn't cook any less or more. I normally don't eat the side beans but Doc Martin's pinto beans are worth trying. If you're visiting Taos, this is a must. There were ton of tourists there on the way to an event or next destination but there enough locals enjoying music and dealing with the crowds to know this is a good spot to eat. read more

The food was just OK. We ordered the chile relleno appetizer, elote corn dip appetizer, a smothered burrito, and a margarita. The margarita was good and burrito was OK but we were annoyed to find out that the chopped green chiles that were offered to us (because they were out of green sauce) were just chopped and softened bell peppers. Additionally the elote corn dip was watery and more like a soup than a dip. The chile relleno was pretty good- it was pretty much the saving grace of the dinner. The server was polite and attentive, and the atmosphere was nice. They had live music starting at 6pm. Not sure that we would go back for a full dinner, but maybe drinks and music. All in all, worth checking out but maybe plan to eat elsewhere (especially since that meal came out to around $70). read more

I had high hopes from this restaurant after reading the reviews, and the ambiance and service were fine but was disappointed by the food. The chupacabra margarita promised peppers but wasn't at all spicy. The green chile cheese curds were very bland. The nachos were also extremely bland- they needed some hot salsa or pico de gallo on top, and had only a teaspoon of guacamole. Pathetic. Then the mushroom and carmelized onion quesadilla was ok but needed some sauce. It was supposed to come with some crema but they barely drizzled a few drops on top. This was very average food, nothing special. I would not return there. read more

She actually acted passive-aggressively when my partner asked for the kitchen to correct something. The dish was returned 'corrected' with grease. This establishment must have a hard time keeping staff, since Trish R should have been let go already. We had a very strange dinning experience. We were a group of 7 people, everyone placed their entrees with a few having soup as a starter. After a while of having a drink and chatting, food came for 3 people with their soups as well. The soup should have arrived before and then their meal, weird but not a big deal. Then waiter comes back to say 2 people that ordered shrimp, they no longer have shrimp. So we had to ask for the menu so they can find something else to eat. Was strange they wouldn't come prepared the menus after giving the news but okay. The 3 people are eating their meal. Few minutes later waiter comes out again to say they are out of trout, so I had ordered the trout, now I have to decide what new thing to eat. At this point the three have finished their meal and the other 4 are waiting for their food. You would think they would let people know in advanced that they are out of something, what kind of restaurant prepares the food for a few people and say "tell the rest we don't have what they wanted". Worse part was another person serving the plates was in a terrible mood, he would come in hot "WHO ORDERED THE CHICKEN?" And then place the plate down really hard and we saw him leave and walk into the kitchen door slamming the door really upset about something. My meal was the last to arrive and the person serving says "we were building up your appetite haha" instead of apologizing for how long it took or saying hopefully this is a good alternative from your original order or something! We spent over $98 on a very small salad with chicken, the chile relleno, one margarita and chips and salsa. The beef tacos were greasy from the frying pan with unflavored ground beef and cheese I wouldn't serve at home to my 12 year olds make friends, really bad. First meal in Taos: will likely be as disappointing as every other meal we have had here so far. We came here with a friend on Thursday evening, and the place is really cute with that New Mexican flair ambience that we are complete suckers for (despite the chairs being bizarrely low slung). The "perfect margarita" was anything but--essentially pure tequila with a splash of the other stuff. We need to ask for several limes to make it drinkable. The green chile margarita was super spicy and unpleasant. Food was mediocre. The beet salad was ho-hum and the green chile pork stew was tepid at best temperature-wise (flavor was fine). On the chili relleno dinner, the crispy rellenos were wonderful, but the butter knife on the table did not do a good enough job of being able to cut them (side of beans were undercooked and even the rice tasted off). Our daughter's chicken nuggets were standard airport fare. Dessert was pretty good, however. We enjoyed the lemon cake and tres leches. Bottom line: could and should have been better. All the ingredients were there for a cozy and delicious experience, but they kept missing the mark again and again. Would not recommend and wish that they tried a little bit harder. read more

I have to update our other review. We had a completely different experience this time. I realize that it's important to try places at least three times. Then, if it's not a good experience, three strikes, I'm out and probably not coming back. We went back on a Friday at 5:00. We scored a table in the music hall area, where the historic fountain used to be. We ordered Prickly Pear Margaritas and they were outstanding, our server was so attentive and it was BUSY! Then we had the Rellenos, and the Queso Fondito, WOW, minds blown. Thank you for a fantastic dining, drinking and music experience.
