Colibri is such a beautiful spot! The location is fantastic, and the restaurant itself is gorgeous both inside and out. The staff was incredibly kind, welcoming, and accommodating, which made for a really enjoyable experience. The food was delicious, and we genuinely enjoyed everything we ordered. The only reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars is because the timing of the courses was a bit off--our main dishes arrived before our appetizers. It seemed like an unusual mix-up, and hopefully just a one-time occurrence. Overall, I would absolutely go back. Solid 4 stars is my honest opinion for this elevated mexico food. some dishes were better then others. I savored the main dishes but the tortilla soup was a big let down. Now, if that was the traditional thin broth It would have been fantastic. I loved that you could get it with no chicken but it was a super thick tomato paste, mole adjacent broth. The churros lacked a lightness & were barely filled. Otherwise a yummy dinner overall & atmosphere was enjoyable but not my kinda crowd of folx. Service was strained at the bar but they did good. Looking to check out The presidio on Friday night we settled on Colibri. Being in the Presidio makes for a nice atmosphere, and the cocktails and guacamole were easily the highlights of the meal. I ordered the carnitas. The pork was tender and crispy and the guajillo and árbol chile salsa added a little heat this came served with corn tortillas and rice My wife ordered the filet mignon, which was topped with an ancho chile stuffed with seasoned goat cheese and finished with a chipotle sauce. She ordered medium rare and it was a little bit over but she liked it. Unfortunately, the service really hurt the experience. We wanted to order another round of drinks, but our server never came back. When we were ready to leave, we waited several minutes for the check and eventually had to flag someone down so we could pay. The food was decent, but not enough to make up for the lack of service. There are too many good dining options in San Francisco to spend an evening waiting around for basic attention. Glad we tried it, but it's not a place I'll be returning to. read more

I'd consider this a 3.5 star but rounding up to 4 stars out of generosity. Good location in the presidio next to the officers club - at the end of the main parade lawn. Spacious establishment with plenty of outdoor and indoor seating; clean, modern and decent decor. Service was prompt and friendly. Where this place falls short is on the mixture of quality, quantity and price. Quality is good, not great, which is actually fine when going out to eat -- not every place can be a michelin start restaurant. However, if the food is just good, you can't be charing outrageous prices for meager serving sizes. Not sure if this is a tourist trap per se; but the prices need to be reduced by at least 25%. Starting with drinks, I ordered the gruñon which was decent. I like a good smokey mezcal and while the gruñon tasted fine and was enjoyable; paying $17 for what amounted to a shot glass worth of booze seemed steep. Volume should have been doubled. The food was also good, but this is where you really start to notice it misses the mark is on pricing -- WAY WAY WAY overpriced. We started with the guacamole, charged$17, and although it looks like it comes out in a humungous bowl - it's actually only 5 or 6 oz worth of guac, extremely deceiving -- enough for 1 person, perhaps 2 people if you it out and each person only has a couple chips. You can purchase the same quantity at a grocery store for under $5. Sure they state it's made fresh, but it certainly doesn't taste spectacular or anything above standard which merits such price gauging. I ordered the fajitas and enjoyed them -- good portion size and I liked the soft tortillas and the cornbread served with it. Perhaps a bit skimpy on the steak, but I generally enjoy veggies over protein. My partner ordered the Mole and also pointed out that it was skimpy on the chicken, but we both enjoyed the mole flavor profile (although it should be noted that it is on the spicy side). Fajitas were $40, should have been $30. Mole was $32, should have been $24. One other positive note is the chips and salsa. I was actually surprised that this was offered for free given the experience explained above. I found the salsas, namely the mango salsa, to be really enjoyable. They were even nice enough to refill both teh chips and salsa during the course of the meal. Hard to determine if I'd recommend this place or not -- perhaps if you're in the area and want a light snack -- you can swing by to relax, enjoy the chips and salsa and split an entre. read more

We came in on a nice Saturday and the restaurant was really lively. We were able to make a same-day reservation without too much trouble, but it was definitely busy, so I'm glad we did. We started with a guacamole bowl for the table and a few drinks. Service was friendly and prompt throughout. Our group ordered a mix of enchiladas, tacos, and some brunch items, and everyone was really impressed with their meals. I had the carnitas tacos (listed as an appetizer, so a bit smaller), but they still came with a generous amount of meat and fresh toppings. I haven't heard of Colibri until they opened in the Presidio. Looking through the photos, they were on the opposite side of the street from A.C.T. on Geary. We've eaten here a handful of times and love the food, though it's a bit on the expensive side. Quesabirrias- absolutely delicious and love the consommé! Mushrooms and cactus- pretty good. I'm so glad they have cactus here. Duck breast- fantastic dish. Wish there was more duck! Molcajete mixto- I wasn't a fan of this. The shrimp and meats were overcooked. The chicken breast was dry and stringy. Same with the steak and it seemed like a very cheap cut of meat for this expensive meal. I loved the sauce. The cheese was clumped together. Maybe use a different type of cheese. Filet mignon- no complaints and it was delicious Butter lettuce salad- so many great flavors mixed together. It was a bit hard to eat because the butter lettuce was limp. You have to cut it because it's a big leaf. Then using your fork and knife, fold it, and pop it in your mouth. Octopus- a must get dish. I Had a chance to try Colibri with the hubs today and this was a nice experience. This spot is located in the Presidio area which is very nice and beautiful with views of the Golden Gate Bridge. A 10-15 minute walk down there is also a beautiful park with gorgeous views from this area as well. The ambiance of this restaurant is very nice and service was also fairly attentive. For food we tried: * Queso fundido with chorizo and mushrooms - this came with 4 corn tortillas and if you are a fan of cheesy goodness this is a good dish. I loved the flavor of the chorizo which was really nice * Chicken enchiladas - I got this with the red chipotle sauce and I really liked them. They come in a batch of 3 with lots of sauce and a generous filling * Chile relleno with carnitas - This was a stuffed poblano chili with carnitas and chicharones and came with a black bean sauce purée thing on the bottom. We were there for a wedding brunch buffet. Great food and drinks, and the inside ambiance plus ample outside patio space were excellent. Given the special event and full seating for regular customers outside, I'm not too worried about the occasional slow drink service. We clearly made them extra busy and it was good to see that they didn't neglect the folks outside. We could have easily flagged down a server to get an order in if it was that important. I loved how many spicy versions of cocktails there were alongside the long list of standard ones. Nice variety in the buffet style meal, with plenty of both meat and vegetarian options. Your website does clearly state that reservations are needed, but we were still surprised by how the situation was handled. We arrived without a reservation and were told there was no availability. However, the two people directly in front of us, who also did not have reservations, were seated immediately. If reservations are required, that policy should be applied consistently to everyone. As visitors unfamiliar with the area and the restaurant, we would have appreciated a clear explanation for why others without reservations could be accommodated while we could not. Being turned away while watching others in the same situation get seated felt unfair and unwelcoming. Unfortunately, this experience did not feel tourist-friendly or professional, and it left a very negative impression. read more

Loved the large selection of food for everyone and the food was so good! My personal favorite was the duck. Not overcooked and super flavorful and chills relleno and the octopus. We stumbled upon this gem while hanging out at the Presidio. I thought our only food options were the food trucks near the Parade Ground and boy was I wrong. I had the Tacos De Pescado (didn't realize the fish was fried; I should have read better) and the Ensalada Mixta. The salad was crispy, crunchy, fresh and had a great tangy dressing. The fish taco topped with a very good coleslaw. Before our entree we had homemade corn tortillas and a trio of salsas. The seasonings were on point and service was great. We live in the Marina and my 93 yo parents have wanted to try this restaurant for a while because they fondly remember the Officer's Club. The food was fresh but flavorless and the service was terrible. They don't have enough staff and everyone was running around like chickens with their heads cut off. We were told the $9 corn on the cob was 2 corns cut in half, so 4 pieces, but it came out as 1 single corn cob, not cut. Safeway has corn 4 for $1! The $18 guacamole came in a huge stone bowl but a teeny tiny amount was in a shallow plastic dish in the bowl. No one checked on how anything was and it felt so chaotic that we just wanted to finish up and leave. We don't mind paying for delish food and good service, but this was neither. After all the holiday fuss wait on me please.... In the pouring rain we made our way up 19th and was it worth the mess? Every minute. The margaritas "house" with a bit of kick and just enough salt were absolutely welcomed and delicious. The guacamole was made in the serving area chunky fresh and full of lime.... The thin chips were perfect to complement. The grilled corn cannot be skipped period. Full of flavor grilled, butter, chili, lime and a hint of cheese. Well worth the $8. Split to share. The grilled fish tacos were fresh and filling with purple cabbage. The mango salsa which came with the chips put a hint of sweetness. I was in heaven and getting very full by the 2nd taco.. 3 in all on house made tortillas. Pork tacos were as well tender and sweet. 3 tacos to a dish were just enough. Took a while for someone to come over to take orders, and had to ask to put in drinks, ask for chip refills etc. 1/2 of our entrees came out almost 10 mins before the other half. The portion size relative to price on the mains like the carnitas and pulpo was disappointing. Super tiny side of rice with the carnitas. Chile relleno filling flavor was okay, but the chile itself was under seasoned and watery. They could also use some additional heaters on the patio for the larger tables. What a pleasant find.. While attending an event at the Palace of Fine Arts we were quickly looking for somewhere to eat beforehand and we're surprised to find this gem in the Presidio just minutes away. The restaurant has a cute vibe that reminded me a lot of Mexico City. We arrived around 11 AM on a Sunday and we're sat immediately. Our server was attentive, and friendly, offering appetizer & entrée suggestions. The menu had so many good options we decided to share everything. Came here on a date night and had high expectations! Immediately met with a great ambiance being seated on the outdoor patio. Really friendly staff that were attentive and got our order in quickly. Drinks came out fast which is a plus. We started with the ceviche that came in a cute bowl, but the fish seemed overcooked (?) even though it was raw, if that makes sense. The texture of the fish was hard for a ceviche, did not melt in your mouth whatsoever. I liked the citrusy taste though. The sopes were amazing!! Definitely a must get appetizer. The queso fundido is a must get, and honestly was the star of the show out of everything we got, including the main. Honestly would go back just for this dish. I was really disappointed in the Pato en Mole Verde Pipian. The mole had a great flavor, but the duck was so overcooked. It was dry and bland and I have never had duck so dry. The rice was a bit undercooked and for $9 for that tiny little bowl... it definitely could've used more flavor. This is a busy place for Sunday brunch. After ten minutes of servers smiling at me, I asked the hostess if one might come over to take my order. The huevos rancheros had delicious flavor. I was disappointed that the eggs were over cooked. The mushrooms and nopales were good too. They served the black beans in a tiny ramekin, about a tablespoon full and they were so puréed that they were difficult to eat with a fork. The waitress asked me how everything was, and I commented on the small portion of bean. She responded that she would tell the chef and moved to take my plate away, even as it still had food in it. I told her I wasn't done yet. When the bill came I was surprised to see that I was charged for a refill of iced tea and each glass was $5 hence a $10 charge for it on my bill. We went to the presidio for the food trucks but nothing moved us so after looking around on maps, this place popped up. We arrived around 2 on a Friday afternoon. There is seating indoors and out and we opted for in since it was a somewhat breezy, cooler day. We were greeted and seated right away by what turned out to be the manager. We chose to sit at the bar and Juan, who was also the bartender, was our server. He was very patient, kind and helpful with my non spicy questions. He pointed me to several options. The chips and salsa arrived shortly after we ordered. We were given three salsas: a green (very mild, excellent flavor) salsa, a red salsa (with a small amount of spice - too much for me, lol) and a pineapple salsa (sweet and delicious). The chips were thin and warm - perfect! We got the guacamole with the jalepenos on the side for Randy. It was so fresh tasting and flavorful. Randy ordered the chile relleno with vegetables and cheese covered in mole sauce. He said it was fresh and a nice mix of veggies and cheese and quite flavorful. I ordered the al pastor tacos. Three small soft tacos packed with so much flavor. I tried the pineapple salsa on them since the tacos have a bit of pineapple in them and it was so good. After our meal we ordered the creme brulee mango cheesecake and the coffee and tequila flan and shared them. Neither of them was overly sweet which we enjoyed. Excellent fresh flavor. We didn't once have to ask for help - our waters were filled regularly, chips refilled, checked on several times and our check cleared in a timely manner. Above all, everyone we encountered, especially Juan B (the last initial is per our receipt) was amazing. He gave us a card to leave a review somewhere else using a QR code but a Google account is required and we don't do Google so hopefully this reaches someone other than possible diners. Colibri, which was a reliably good downtown SF restaurant for 16 years has reemerged in the Presidio, in Arguello's former location, but little else has changed. One upscale Mexican restaurant has replaced another upscale Mexican restaurant, both housed in one of San Francisco's oldest structures, the Presidio Officer's Club. It is exactly the sort of place that this historic site deserves. Happy hour in the bar is what I enjoyed here. While Friday diners filled the outdoor, heat-lamped patio, from a seat in the bar area one can witness the hustle and bustle of this place, enjoy the old black and white Latin films screening silently above the bar, and spy guacamole being assembled over to the side. The happy hour menu (available only in the bar, M-F 3-6pm) includes 5 Antojitos offerings at $10 apiece, 4 cocktails ($12 each), draft beer ($5), and house wine ($10). My Colibri Margarita was satisfyingly stronger than versions elsewhere, a plus, and I enjoyed (in order of enjoyment): * Panuchos De Cochinita Pibil; * Tostadas De Tinga; and * Flautas (should have opted for chicken over the potato and soy chorizo filling) Lots of things bring me to the Presidio. Nice old hacienda style inside with a touch of modern. Our server was super friendly but so busy had to be flagged down after greeting us to let him know we were ready to order. Drinks took a while to come out but both drinks and food were delicious. Had a specialty tequila drink that I cannot remember name of (sorry) and the Pato en Mole Verde Pipian which is duck in mole verde with arugula and risotto cake and so worth the price. The cochinita pibil was tender and perfectly seasoned, the ceviche enchiladas were unique and delicious, and the guacamole was fresh and so tasty. The food was very good. I had the winter squash soup and the Cochinita pibil, and both were quite good. I loved the roasted piñones in the soup. The restaurant is quite loud, and we had a hard time talking over our neighbors' birthday party, but that is a sign that everyone was having a good time. BUT, the service was astonishingly disorganized. My simple mescal ordered when we sat down took 20 minutes to get to me. My friend's soup (ordered 40 minutes earlier) arrived at the same time as another's guest's dessert (3 minute wait for dessert). When the waiter passed by our table to ask us if we wanted anything, if we couldn't answer in 10 seconds, he would just move on, because he just didn't have the time. We stopped in at Colibri for mid afternoon appetizers and cocktails with friends. For a cocktail, I ordered a Paloma. It was served in a Mexican ceramic glass with Tajin on the rim. It was a very good cocktail. Bartender: 5/5 My wife and I shared We the guacamole and pescado (fish) ceviche. Both were fresh and flavorful. The also served us complimentary chips and salsa. I have been here for both brunch and dinner. Both were good experiences. I did have reservations for both as well. Brunch was on a Sunday, right around opening time. Three of us sat indoors by the window. We ordered: panque de elote (perfect amount of sweet flavor and consistency), Mexican French toast (bright, tasty, hint of cinnamon, served w/ fruit), tinga omelette (good -sorry, that's all sis gave me for description lol), chilaquiles verde (nicely arranged, topped with two over easy eggs, good flavor). Here's what we each had (and the descriptions my friends gave, lol): -Camerones con mole de tamarindo - prepared w/ corn cake (think cornbread), beautifully displayed, tasty, but this would not have filled me up. -Tlayuda (vegan option): large crispy tortilla, vegan cheese, refried beans, cashew crema, cactus salad, vegetables (LOVED) -Quesabirrias (tacos): braised short rib (delisioso!) -Camerones con Rebozo: prawns stuffed w/ Oaxaca cheese, wrapped in bacon (mouth watering) For dessert we had Flan Al cafe y tequila and churros rellenos. This topped everything off nicely. The restaurant is in the Officers Club, so basically the restrooms are there - clean, warm (we were chilly outside, but ok by the heat lamp), and plentiful. Service is good. We were checked in on regularly. Parking is easy only mornings or evenings like when we went. During the day time, it might get very busy in the Presidio, especially with the tunnel top park nearby. The location is unique. The decor is rustic with a blend of bright and dark tones. Manager did not come to the table and ask for my feed back and when we got our bill we were tax on the discount. The positives: great indoor/outdoor space, friendly service and location inside Presidio. Could improve: The flavorings and portions on some items. The Mexican French toast came with 1.5 pieces meaning one and a half toasts for $21!!! It had a nice accompaniment of fruits, but didn't have any "Mexican" flavors...at least add some cinnamon. The chilaquiles was well portioned, but again lacked adequate flavoring. Come on now!: the cocktail pour was not a standard 1.5 oz, more like 1 oz for $17.
