Had a wonderful dinner at Flores. We walked in with no reservation on Friday night but got seated in 20 minutes. Started with Chips and salsa. It was spicy but my husband ate all of it. Then we ordered Beso Del Diable and Mango agua fresca. Both drinks were very good. For dinner we ordered Vegetarian Tacos and the Parrillas. Delicious food. It was too loud for us even though we were eating outside. We could not talk to each other. A suggestion- please buy new knives. Came for happy hour and the space is beautiful. The inside is spacious and I spotted a private room in the back as well. There's nice outdoor seating as well. Overall, a decent spot with a nice atmosphere and vibe. We sat at a great corner table outside, and the location is on a lively block with TVs in the bar area, which added to the energy. The food was good but nothing especially memorable. The guac was great. The queso came out a little different than we expected, and the veggie taco wasn't our favorite, it had long pieces of mushroom, nopales, and avocado. Flores was absolutely spectacular. We came here for a birthday party and made reservations in advance with the preset Jalisco family style menu, and it was an absolutely fantastic experience for everyone involved. First off, the service was wonderful; incredibly attentive, accommodating, kind, considerate... they went above and beyond in making sure the birthday girl felt special, and that everyone was comfortable and content. The restaurant itself lent a wonderful energy as well, the decor and lighting steeped in both coziness and elegance. The first course was chips and guac, which was as fantastic as before, and then came the Ensalada Verde, a salad with a bit of everything in terms of textures and flavors; a bit of spice, a bit of citrus, a bit of crunch, and a bit of creaminess. The second course was even more fantastic, with build-your-own carnitas tacos, esquites (flavorful creamy corn; an off-the-cob version of elote), and chile rellenos. We all ended up as stuffed as the peppers and in fantastic spirits, and then the meal rounded out with a tres leches cake, candles, and birthday song to go with it all. The food here is really good and authentic! The birria plate was good and had great flavor, but for the price point at $29- I thought the portions were a little small. I came to Flores twice and the first time was definitely better than the second. The second time I came to Flores was more recently for restaurant week with friends and the ambiance is beautiful with tons of wood tones inside and moving leaves on the ceiling, and the staff is incredibly friendly. Sadly, the dishes were not very flavorful and the dessert course was quite off-putting. For the restaurant week special menu I decided to get the avocado salad, the pork stuffed chili pepper and the flan, and out of all the dished the pork stuffed chili pepper had the most flavor but was not my cup of tea. It had a creamy sauce towards the bottom that tasted like cashew and was topped with pomegranate seeds. The flavor profile of the dish did not mesh well together. Flan was what I ordered for the dessert round and while I was expecting it to taste like traditional flan with a caramel soft flavor profile I was greatly mistaken as this Flan was packed with jalapeño flavoring which was incredibly off-putting for a dessert as the spiciness of the jalapeños did not go well with the sweet caramel notes of the flan and sauce. read more

On Friday we visited and ordered 4 items to try. Out of the 4 we really enjoyed 1 dish and the rest passed as ok. The sopes were the one thing we loved! So flavorful and full of texture also juicy. The carnitas had a good fried flavor but lacked salt to complete the savoriness, the salsa had no spice, and the mole was a bit sweet. It was a rather bland entree for $30. Even worse the small portions were uneven - there's way too much mole and salsa for the small amount of meat and tortillas. The tostadas had a similar effect. Very bland. The service was kinda hard - understandable for a busy Friday night. After waiting for the check I couldn't make eye contact with anyone and had to walk over and wait to ask someone to pay. We came to Flores trusting the Michelin Guide for Mexican while exploring SF- a city we have limited knowledge of. It was really good! I had three tacos, guacamole and a Diet Coke. The tacos were delicious, seemed to use high quality ingredients, and packed a lot of flavor. The restaurant was well designed and had a cool garden in the back which made it feel stimulating and enjoyable to be in. Our waiter was super friendly, helpful, and did a great job balancing when to converse and when to let us converse amongst ourselves. This significantly affected the experience and I hope they can improve that in the future. Food wise was a hit and miss. The cocktails were ok, very light on the alcohol and flavor. Appetizers were the highlight of the whole thing. Crazy delicious warm creamy flavorful elote and yummy crunch and savory flautas with potato and chorizo inside! I could've just had that several times for the meal and been a happy girl. The mains were pozole, no flavor, and chicken enchiladas, the flavor was weird and off, didn't taste authentic at all especially the sauce. Came here for a birthday brunch. We were seated quickly and served in a timely manner as well. Our waitress was incredibly friendly and accommodating. The food was amazing. My friends love the chilaquiles and said they were filling but not heavy. I loved the carne asada, which was well seasoned with lime and cilantro and melt-in-your-mouth tender. We got a mimosa bucket that is good value if you are sharing with 3+ people. The interior was clean, large, airy, and not too busy so you could hear each other. Came here after a walk with the dog for outdoor dining. Chips and salsa: A Warm chips, fresh thin and crispy. The salsa had a decent kick and great smoky flavor. Honestly the best part of our experience here is the chips and salsa. Quesadilla with coles (brussel sprouts): C+ This was an okay dish. The brussel sprouts were unique to me as I've never seen it used as a filling for quesadillas. They're quite stuffed and there's a lot going on with the cheese on top and salsa but it didn't feel cohesive. Chilaquiles: B- Got this with the carnitas. My first time ever trying chilaquiles. It was tasty but pretty one dimensional. The carnitas and the eggs didn't add much flavor, the best part is the chips. Service was lacking. This review is from two days in a row (yesterday and today): SPOILER ALERT: I RECOMMEND IT FOR ANYONE NEW TO MEXICAN FOOD OR A MEXICAN FOOD CONNOISSEUR FOOD: For appetizers both days I had the chips and guacamole and the sopes. Chips and guacamole is a must in every mexican restaurant and this one gets it just right. Its chunky but the onion and tomato are finely chopped, if you ask for extra cheese on top they add more (my friend asked for this the first day) and I love it with a ton of lime. I order maybe a total of 8 pieces just for me and I love that they don't gate keep or withhold them. The portion is perfect for 2-4 people. Next, the sopes de frijol are chefs kiss!!! First time I ever went here, I thought it would be on pre made sopes but nope, masa is fresh. Its nice and hot, each sope is about 2-3 bites. They're topped with frijoles, lettuce, cheese, and a jalapeno. If you are choosing between the chips and guac and these, I would have to go with the sopes. I order them every time. For context, my friend from Copenhagen tried them for the first time yesterday and she was blown away. For our entree the first day me and all my girlfriends got the pozole verde de pollo. Listen, when I tell you it is HARD to find a pozole that is chicken and not pork base and tastes homemade in SF it is HARD but this place is good. When I moved here from LA two years ago I was incredibly annoyed that the Mexican food where I lived was so mid, but here 10/10. When I crave some pozole, here is where I go. The serving is just the right size for me, enough broth, the hominy is tender but not overcooked or soggy (which tends to happen to second day pozole, this proves it is cooked daily). The second day, literally today, I got the pozole again. It comes with a size of tortilla chips, the toppings, and of course lime. My boyfriend got the arrachera and he was pleasantly surprised with the portion and the yellow corn tortillas. There was poblano and bell peppers at the bottom of the skillet with sauteed onions, and pico de gallo on top. Four fresh tortillas, rice, and beans. I don't eat red meat but he is a big big steak eater and he approved. DRINKS: Disclaimer, I do not drink alcohol. I order the sparkling homemade lemonade with 3 stevia and it is fresh. It is actually a common drink in Mexico so having one with my meal reminds me of home. After that I order a diet coke with three limes (I know, so specific, but they catered)! HOWEVER, my friends the first day all got classic and strawberry margaritas, a paloma, and the one everyone was talking about was the mamita chula. It had like tajin on the rime and had a nice little decoration, nice color, they loved it. Today, I got a diet coke and my boyfriend got the Mexican coke with a lime. My boyfriend also had two shots one of which was an alcohol free shot. Let me tell you, some of my friends are NOT drinkers (such as me) so having non alcoholic beverages that is not like juice is a nice way to incorporate others. DESSERT: I did not have dessert until today with my boyfriend. I was undecided between the churros and the flan so, my boyfriend decided on the flan. Definitely more presentable than I thought. It came with an airy home made whip cream on top (not the one from a can btw, like fresh). It also came with a bite size cookie on the size. The caramel (aka, burnt sugar as is traditional in this dessert) was on the side. Not dry at all, nice and dense yet it melted on your tongue. Flan is usually a big let down in Mexican restaurants for me but to my surprise, this is one that I would order again. Very decent and if you are undecided on dessert, just order this one. It is not a gigantic slice, but it is perfect to satisfy a sweet tooth after. SERVICE: THIS IS THE START BTW. Yesterday with my girlfriends we sat in the back and we had a young, white waitress, lots of tattoos, blonde hair and she was so so so nice. We gave her a 20% tip because she really catered. We talked about makeup, she brought the limes, the drinks, she recommended entrees to my friends, she was up and down handling all the tables. I don't know her name otherwise I would totally shout her out. Today, we had Fernando as a waiter. He's from Yucatan I'm from Michoacan and we bonded over that. We joked a bit and Fernando the owner actually brought TWO SHOTS ON THE HOUSE AND THE FLAN. We had a good time and for sure. They are attentive to your needs and the owner is super humble. He was sweeping the street, talking to customers, helping Uber eats guy, and making some cocktails. Loved it, we left Fernando a good tip. Unfortunately, my boyfriend said no receipt otherwise I would have included it as well. LOCATION & AMBIANCE: Love it. I live in Nob Hill and its like a 20 minute walk there. So, super convenient. Enjoyed a dinner here with a large group of coworkers and everything was pitch perfect. From the delicious cocktails, to scratch made tortillas and everything in between it was excellent. Being with a group we ordered several dishes to split. My favorite of which was, hands down, the queso fundido (melted oaxaca cheese, mushrooms, onion, kale, salsa molcajete, served with tortillas). Cheese and mushrooms? You got me hook, line, and sinker, y'all!
