Since I didn't actually use their services, I feel that it's neither fair to give 5 stars or 1 star, so I'm going with a number in the middle. Called for a consultation, and it genuinely seems as though they have ZERO interest in grooming cats. If the almost complete lack of photos, aside from 2 cats, doesn't speak volumes, then let me tell you about my experience. I called to inquire about a haircut and some grooming for my short-haired, healthy, 9 yr old boy kitty who has recently gained some weight and has a couple dreads near his shoulders, and because of his soft undercoat, it's difficult for me to brush tangles out of his fur. He's a rescue, and although I've had him for almost 9 years and love him dearly, he's still a very shy, timid cat, and he rarely allows me to brush him. I mentioned those details and the man I spoke with sounded apprehensive and said, "If the cat doesn't like it, there's nothing we can do coz the cat will get crazy and be kind of dangerous." I replied that I saw a specific note on their Yelp page that says they have special training in dealing with animals who have PTSD and/or anxiety. I remarked that my cat has never bitten or scratched me, nor hissed at me; he just gets frightened and kind of hunkers down if he's feeling uncomfortable. I asked about the cost of a haircut and offered to send some photos of my cat if that would be helpful, and he was basically just like, "No, it's okay, no need to send." He quoted me $149, then said they also charge a handler's fee, as well as a by-the-minute charge for brushing and detangling, even though I was told that they'd likely just shave him down and give him a lion's cut. When I asked about the cost of the handler's fee, he started explaining to me what a handler's fee is. I asked again, "How much is it?" and it sounded like he made the number up arbitrarily on the spot. His overall attitude throughout the call almost made me feel as if he was trying to discourage me from coming there. I don't get it. If you guys don't want to groom cats, just take that information off of your Yelp page and be a bit more transparent about the services you're okay with offering. Today, when I called to postpone my Friday appointment (well within the 48+hrs window), the owner Paul got rude and canceled my entire membership, saying I'd rescheduled more than three times this year and that was "too many." There's no written rule about that--he just made one up. For a place that's already pretty expensive, you'd expect better treatment. Instead, Paul came across as rude, dismissive, and more focused on fees than loyalty. And after reading through other reviews, it's clear this isn't an isolated experience - there's so many recurring pattern of complaints about Paul's poor attitude, rude demeanor, and lack of customer service. I am having a never ending disappointing experience. After confirming package pricing on the phone and giving all my info, I had to repeat everything when transferred to Charis to book. Mildly frustrating but whatever. When I dropped my dog off, the staff was very nice, but when I returned 45 minutes later they still hadn't started on my dog. Another dog was being groomed, despite me being told my dog would be alone. I had explained she's very anxious and the whole reason for choosing this spot was that she would be alone. Now she's not only not alone but she ended up there over an hour longer than expected. By the time she was done, she was too stressed for proper nail clipping or gland expression. These services would not have even been attempted if I hadn't double-checked. The staff's reaction was confused, saying these services weren't noted in my booking. What about the package? I was being really patient but now I'm annoyed. At checkout, I was charged a la carte instead of the package price which was WAY more then expected. Staff admitted this "happens all the time." Weeks later, after leaving a voicemail for Charis, I had no choice but to dispute the charge as I was mislead and lied too about services. Charis eventually called back and we had a nice convo but blamed the employees which felt a little icky. Despite all this I was willing to give them another chance (and not leave a negative review) ...but then Peter called... Accused me of "stealing," since I disputed the charge. Then revealed I was being recorded and hung up on me like an angry teenager. Misleading pricing, poor communication, and aggressive follow-up make this place impossible to recommend. read more

I've been bringing my cat Luna to Collar & Comb for nearly two years. In that time, we've never missed an appointment, and Luna has never been anything but a sweet, well-behaved cat. She's been complimented by staff at every single visit for her calm demeanor and her beautiful coat. I've always paid their very high prices for a bath, flea dip, light trim, and nail file -- and I've always tipped generously. Despite my loyalty, I've had repeated issues with their system. I've been automatically scheduled for appointments I didn't make, charged a no-show fee for one of those mistakes, and even had Luna booked at the wrong location. Their call system and auto-booking setup are confusing at best and unprofessional at worst. But I stayed, because the grooming itself was good. ' The reason for this review -- and the reason I won't be returning -- is their new policy: I am no longer allowed to bring Luna in on her regular 12-week schedule. They are now requiring me to commit to every 6 weeks, or we are not welcome back at all. For an indoor cat with no matting, fleas, or grooming issues, this demand is excessive, unreasonable, and frankly greedy. Their justification is that they "intentionally serve fewer clients so they can offer the highest level of safety, care, and expertise." To me, it reads more like a way to lock clients into a rigid, costly schedule. So, here's my honest advice: if you're someone who only wants to bring your pet in occasionally -- or on a schedule that actually makes sense for your animal's needs -- don't waste your time here. They only want clients who will spend top dollar every 6 weeks, whether your pet needs it or not. After two years of loyalty, I'm extremely disappointed to be treated this way. I have been bringing my Golden Retriever to Collar & Comb (primarily the Sunset location but I also got to check out the new location on Santa Monica) for almost 5 years now because of the quality and care that is given to my dog. The groomers are AKC certified so I can relax knowing that my dog isn't in danger, but rather I have found the groomers to be extremely knowledgeable and helpful when trying to manage my dog's skin issues like hot spots. The de-shedding option they have makes an incredible difference in my GOLDEN RETRIEVER's shedding - it really does cut down on the fur that would be on clothes/furniture; I refer to it as witchcraft because it still amazes me how little he sheds. A true testament to the quality of service is that people are constantly remarking on the softness of my dog's fur coat and how handsome and healthy he looks thanks to Collar & Comb. Just recently, even after swimming in the ocean, a family member commented that my dog still smelled good thanks to his grooming. My dog runs over to Anastasia, the groomer, because he absolutely adores her and I appreciate the front desk staff, Earl. Charis is also amazing and I HIGHLY recommend checking out the Santa Monica location for the Pistachio matcha latte! I have been coming here for almost 2 years and they are absolutely amazing. I have a rescue dog who came to me with anxiety so it was important to find a groomer that did not use cages on kennels. Collar and Comb is so friendly and my pug loves it. He usually sees the same person every time on his appointments so that makes him more comfortable to know what to expect. He also has very bad allergies and used to get chronic ear infections so it's so helpful to have someone able to keep an eye on his ears. I'm dog sitting for my sister and her Pomeranian mix had a bit of a "mud butt" situation. Desperate to get him cleaned up and presentable, I tried to DIY and only made things worse. When you call Collar and Comb, you speak directly to the founder to schedule an appointment. Paul was so friendly, extremely knowledgeable and I even got a bit of an education. Not only did I get the dog groomed but my 20 year old got groomed as well last minute. Both boys look absolutely dapper! My cat has sensitive skin and tends to over itch or overlick himself after a shave but Catherine is a miracle worker! First, the groomers are great...especially April...Love her...but it's the attitude of the owner when he answers the phone that is always so off putting. I understand he has a business to run and cancellations are a pain...but the cancellation fee is pretty high and after bringing my dog in regularly once a month for several months and tipping the staff well, because I will be out of town, I am now off the list and won't be able to get my dog groomed there until next November! They won't have availability for an existing customer (I am now moved back to a new customer) for nine months when they will be accepting new customers. You get punished if your schedule changes no matter how you try and stay loyal and tip the staff. And the owner who answers the phone is short, rude, there is no common courtesy and as soon as the call finishes, he hangs up on you...there are too many really kind groomers who don't treat customers like this...Bowie Barker is excellent...they are so so kind there... EDIT: I cannot respond to the owner's comments below...but please note: there is a lot of confusion when you book or reschedule an appointment. You get notifications that you are confirmed for an appointment if you have canceled that appointment. I have called to let the owner know he is making mistakes in the computer and that I am getting confirmation notices for an appointment when the appointment was canceled. So there is no reason for me to have a "no show" in my account at all...I went to their La Brea location, which then closed after my first appointment...then they moved me to another location that I wasn't able to get to in time for the appointment...which is not my fault. So please note that I was put in the computer at the La Brea location for a monthly Saturday appointment without being told that before that next appointment, that location would be closing and I would have to take my dog to another location further away. They never said a word, let me book my next appointment and then told me the location was closing (within a week or two of my first time there) and would have to take my dog to another location. So, there was no transparency about the location on La Brea closing, there have been many errors confirming appointments I have canceled, I have never been a "no show" and that is due to the owner constantly putting in wrong information in the computer. So you get penalized for things you don't do wrong and his staff all confirm these mistakes happen constantly. He also treats his customers really poorly and rudely. It just is bad business all around. Also, I have never received a text saying I am a "no show" which is something the business sends clients. There are so many additional add-ons and crazy additional expenses. His own staff are incredibly frustrated with how Paul handles his business and are unhappy. The bottom line: Don't go to Collar and Comb. Paul is just so incredibly entitled and rude to all customers and the prices are so high. Again, there are so many other grooming places that do an excellent job and are less expensive and the owners are lovely and kind to customers. If you read all of the negative reviews and Paul's responses, he never acknowledges his bad or rude behavior to anyone or offers an apology or explanation for why he was rude or hangs up on you. Horrifying experience. I regret ever setting foot in this place. I took my 13-year-old cat to this grooming salon on Sunset Blvd and left absolutely traumatized by what I witnessed -- and so was he. I arrived 20 minutes early and unfortunately saw what happened behind the scenes. My gentle, well-behaved cat was being aggressively restrained by the neck, visibly struggling to breathe. He cried out in pain multiple times as the groomer (a Russian woman) manhandled him with clippers, all while yelling "Shhh! Shhh!" at him instead of speaking calmly. It was rushed, harsh, and borderline abusive. When I expressed concern, I was dismissed. No apology. No adjustment in handling. Nothing. By the end, his tail was completely shaved and the service wasn't even finished. To make things worse, the man at the front desk couldn't be bothered to look up from his phone when I asked how it went. Zero professionalism, zero care. He has been groomed regularly for over a decade and has never experienced anything like this. When we got home, I noticed he was limping and avoiding sitting. I checked and found a bleeding wound behind his rear leg. I had to rush him to the vet. Absolutely unacceptable. I brought two of my small dogs in for a nail trim appointment. They were very nervous because they knew something was going to happen so I did my best to comfort them. There are two chairs and one couch in the waiting area and they are all leather. When I sat down on one of the chairs and picked my dog up, I was told that dogs were not allowed up on the chairs because their nails might scratch the leather. How is it possible that the only seating for customers in a facility that exists solely to groom dogs doesn't have anywhere for someone to sit and hold their dog? And they weren't particularly nice about it either. In addition, the woman who did the nail trims never said a word to me. She did not even make an attempt to be pleasant or even smile. I can even get over the fact that there's a big sign on their window that says "we will scrub your pussy" but all in all they could learn a thing or two about customer service and suffice it to say I will not be returning there for further grooming services. read more

I don't know where to begin. The groomer accidentally clipped my cats ear and instead of owning up to the horrible mishap, I was told that the wound was "a few months old" by Paul Leonard, the owner. Why didn't they bring this to my attention earlier then? If an animal is injured, don't you tell the owner before the grooming begins? Immediately after this appointment I went to my vet, who stopped her current appointment to graciously see me, and confirmed that the wound is not old but brand new. I asked Collar and Comb for a refund but was told that it had to be looked into more. Paul, the owner, wanted to speak with my vet. My vet said she didn't want to waste her time with him- anyone could clearly see that the wound was brand new. I didn't even ask for an apology or any sort of compensation for the vet visit and ointment from Collar and Comb. I literally only wanted my money back for the horrible mishap and experience. So I've been going to collar & comb for about 6 months to a year now and every experience has been pretty pleasant until my appointment yesterday. Let my preface by saying I originally had an appointment on Saturday 4/22. On Thursday 4/20, I received the email pictured below that my appointment was cancelled. When I called to see what happened, I was told the spot got filled so I rescheduled to Sunday 4/30 and just fit it around all my other errands I had to run that day. I work M-F and sometimes even weekends so it's hard to make time for things like grooming appointments without moving things around. On 4/30 about two hours after dropping off, I got a call saying my dogs grooming was done and I said I'll be there asap I might just be a little late as I was out running errands. I got charged a $30 late pick up fee so I explained to the groomer what happened with my original appointment, why I had to reschedule to such a busy day for me, and if we could just forego the late pick up fee this time (seems fair to me considering my original appointment got cancelled on me). Here's the part that irked me, the employee kept insisting that they would never cancel an appointment unless someone called to cancel it. I explained that I never cancelled it and I only found out through an email. He said he'd investigate and refund me if what I was saying was true. I called again today to follow up and explained the situation to another male employee who also kept insisting that they would never cancel an appointment unless someone called and cancelled it. This was extremely frustrating to me and made me feel uncomfortable and like they were insinuating that I was lying. No compassion, understanding, or compromise, just disbelief that they could have accidentally cancelled it and I must be wrong. If they check their call logs, they will see that I never called to cancel my original appointment. To keep having to tell them that and continuously be told that I must be wrong because they would never cancel an appointment by accident isn't very good customer service. They ended up giving me a credit towards my next service instead of a refund on the late fees, which I honestly won't be needing as I don't feel comfortable returning anymore. My total came out to $200 for a 15 pound dog which is also pretty ridiculous, including the tip I STILL added after basically being told that my experience didn't matter and that there's just no possible way I could be telling the truth 2 stars because I have no complaints about the actual grooming job. read more

This place did not do my dads 12 year old poodles sanitary area well, my dad regularly took his poodles fishing, and to the beach so yes they needed to get groomed. I called in for the concern the very next day on how we were concerned of the hair cut and I asked if they can just shave it down (3 inches of hair on the tip of her head) he wanted to charge me for an entire new groom and then would also not refund. He was really rude on the phone saying the refund was only available upon pick up, and not after you go home and get the opinions of your family members (my sister is a groomer at Petco for 15 years, so yes when she seen the sanitary area was not done properly she voiced it immediately) I never called back again after that! He is being dishonest saying I made threats! The fact he actually wrote such a long paragraph to convince himself with disinformation to protect himself. after I left a review with accurate photos and my experience just yells that this person is a is smug, vain, everything bad about a person. It's also not true that I called so many times they had to call the police. He is trying to protect his business by being dishonest, trying to control the situation and scheme his way out of two bad poodle hair cuts (hilarious) The dogs are old, not neglected and for you to put such a terrible haircut on such a poodle is just a disgrace. Wow! Steven groomed my two fluffy corgis today and they seriously look the best they ever have! My younger boy, Henry, is a difficult groom (pandemic puppy so he didn't get used to grooming when he was young). Everyone at Collar & Comb is so patient with him, they booked him with a little extra time so they don't have to rush, and he was happy and calm after his groom. He also has a tail and literally no groomer I've met before knows how to groom a fluffy corgi tail, but Steven gave it the most beautiful shape while still making it look very natural. He even watched Henry walk around a little bit so he could get a sense of how he held his tail in order to give it the best shape. Every groomer we've ever had at Collar & Comb is amazing, I seriously don't know how the owner is able to hire the most talented groomers. But Steven might be the best one yet - we even set up recurring grooms with him to make sure my corgs stay fluffy and beautiful!! read more

Ken and his team did amazing work with our 14 month old golden doodle. He has incredibly thick fur and we prefer to keep him fluffy, which is difficult due to him becoming easily matted. They spent all day taking great care of him. They were so patient and I honestly don't know how they were a able to do so much given he is a busy puppy. We established regular, return appointments to keep up his beautiful cut/trim, wash and brush out! Notably we have been searching for a replacement groomer as ours injured herself and can no longer groom. Until we found Collar and Comb it was difficult because everyone just wanted to shave him down due to his thick fur. PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW BEFORE YOU USE THIS GROOMER!!!! I took my dog to collar and comb last Friday. I recently moved to the area from Venice and this was my first and last visit. My dog started to show extreme signs of discomfort about 30 minutes after I picked him up. He then quickly developed a rash all over his belly. His symptoms got worse very quickly, he started to run all over our home trying to alleviate his discomfort. He had never done this before. He stopped eating, going to the bathroom, and walking because he was in pain. I rushed him to MASH emergency vet and saw another vet the day after. $600 later and I still haven't heard from the owner at Collar and Comb after several attempts to understand what happened. I have only spoken to the manager who has told me repeatedly that he will get back to me. Since they have not gotten back to me and it is now Monday, I felt I had no other choice but to write a review to warn owners to prevent this from happening again and to share what my vet told me. The vet said my dog is suffering from an extreme reaction from contaminated brushes, tools, or the environment where he was groomed. Collar and comb imposes serious health risks to dogs, I wish I knew what happened behind closed doors. I have attached my vet bill, a photo of my dog before, and his rash. DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOG TO THIS GROOMER EVER!!! I would do anything to go back to last week and make a different decision where to take my dog to get groomed. He still is having difficulty walking from the extreme discomfort and has a cone on his head. I'm praying that the vets services work and my dog starts showing improvement. I am still waiting for his bloodwork to come back and will write another review to update once I have the results. Please send prayers for my pup. He has never had a health issue like this before. Let me tell you... my dogs have had some bad haircuts in their day... but not anymore!!! The groomers at Collar & Comb are friendly and the dogs come home happy, fresh-n-clean. The groomer also gives a report card on how they did, it's so cute. I spoke with the owner the other day over the phone and they are also willing to give discounts on services if you schedule regularly. I plan to sign up for this, as the prices are on the higher end... but you get what you pay for!!! It's worth it!!!
