Really dependable in a pinch! Crunched by life and work commitments, I'm embarrassed that we hadn't noticed our Persian cat's undercoat had become matted. Our usual spot was on vacation, and cat owners know it's hard to find good cat-focused groomers for long hair breeds. I'm glad I gave them a shot. He went in for a "simple grooming and haircut" but their specialist (alongside helpful manager Paul) discovered his coat needed a deeper cleanup. His skin was irritated, and our cat was much more uncomfortable than he was able to convey to us. They took their time and gave him a proper sanitary grooming, and now he seems so much more relaxed. We will be keeping his fur short to avoid repeats of this health risk. We brush him every day, but it wasn't enough to keep the deep coat sanitary. Honestly, if I could leave a zero star review I would. This place USED to be good. Now they're very shady and cut corners. My most recent attempt at a visit: All of a sudden there is a senior dog handling fee, even though we have been going there for years with seniors, and this has never existed before. We have never taken any longer for any sort of bath or service and yet the company has decided it's an extra 30% on every bill. Nothing about the service is better or changed. In fact it has gone down hill, they no longer seem to care about the dogs there, they don't listen to my specifics, and they didn't listen when I said out dogs can't be around other dogs. When said we have been going there for years and now I will have to look else where, the man on the phone said "good luck" before hanging up. read more

I have struggled to find a groomer for my cat and have had some bad experiences in the search. I am so grateful to have found these guys! The employees and the facilities were very professional and inviting. We felt safe enough to leave her. Most importantly they gave her back so clean and soft!!! Koda had recently been ill and had to recover from (possibly) canine flu, which I suspect he may have gotten from is former groomer. No shade as the former groomer is a very nice man and couldn't control that. I really wanted to find my secondary groomer who is a mobile groomer, but he has completely dropped off the face of the earth. I reached out to Collar & Comb after seeing their LaBrea location on a drive home one day. The other contacted me after a Yelp inquiry and inquired about the kind of groom Koda needed and his personality. (Koda's personality sucks, but I love the personal nature of this process!) My biggest thing is that Koda isn't around other dogs for long periods of time as he doesn't care for other small dogs and being in that environment makes him very anxious. I also didn't want his getting ill again any time soon. Despite him having all his shots, you can never be too careful. They schedule appointments so that dogs are not lingering around in kennels until they are ready. They are constantly sanitizing and when I got there I walked in on the employees cleaning and they were cleaning as I picked Koda up. Now, I went to the Sunset location because of an issue where they had to reschedule me the day before and change me to the Sunset location instead of LaBrea which is closer to my home. That was kinda an inconvenience as I had to wait around that area until they were finished. It was raining that day and traffic was horrible so I just sat in the car on my phone. A discount for my inconvenience would've been nice, but I won't gripe much about that as I was very happy with Koda's look. He looked a hot mess before because as I said, it had been a minute but as I am writing this review over two weeks later, he still looks freshly cut. I also can't stress enough that he seemed more relaxed being groomed in this environment. Most dogs hate being groomer, but this is more of a spa like environment and that seemed to put my little demon at ease. His groomer was very nice and attentive. This is only a job you should do if you love dogs and I really got the vibe that she did. With that said, I definitely see myself returning. Koda is no longer a puppy and I want this experience to be a calming and stress free for him as possible, even if it cost much more. And he looks so cute. read more

After the disappointing groom we had in April at this location and the truly heartbreaking state the return my dog to me in this week I can not allow my previous review to exist with out an update. The first year we'd been going to collar and comb was great, but this last year the quality in grooming has gone drastically down hill. From our groom in April, I did not believe the groomer used the correct trimmer length (that's on file) and within a couple week, her nails were breaking. This time I brought in a picture of my favorite groom that they had given her and mentioned that last time it felt at little long but what's on file should be correct. I wanted the shaping of the picture. As soon as I walked in I could tell how upset my dog was. And she looked terrible. When the groomer brought her to me, she actually said my dog was making it difficult to get the ear even, this was not a problem of evenness there were chunks taken out of the fur of her ear. And the evenness of her ears were not the only problem. Nothing about this cut is even. Her face is uneven, there's a clear cut line on the top of her head, you can see the clipper marks throughout her back. I'm appalled that they would return her to me in this state, let alone how traumatized she was. Then they put a bandana on her like nothing was wrong. We will not be return for the safety of my dog. The groomers they are hiring now are clearly in experienced and I would not risk them harming someone I love. read more

She has some redness and a lot of itching this time of year and they recommend a treatment for her and she feels so much better. I have been bringing my two Frenchies to this location for several years. $120 per visit. I needed a toenail trim for one of my babies and I was told that unless I subscribe to a large monthly fee I could not come in any more. Very disappointing service. Not a pleasant experience. Over priced & rude on the phone. My first experience was great, I took my Boston Hank and the service was great. The staff seemed nice & the price was reasonable.(they've raised it since) My second experience was honestly a disappointment to say the least. I took my Boston and English for a bath- I wanted to add some treatments and was expecting a price of $200 from what I was quoted on the phone when making the booking. Now, I understand my Boston gets nervous around other dogs- (they said there's an extra charge for nervous dogs) but, when I came in, my dogs were the only ones in the store... my Boston wasn't nervous. I was told that it would take a couple hours to do their treatments. Anyway, long story short after about 45 mins I was told that the dogs are ready. I came back to collect them- when I went to pay, the services came out to $300! They did extra add ons which I didn't ask for, as well as charge me a handling fee for my Boston (bc he's nervous... again, no other dogs he's a happy camper) When I took my dogs and put them in the car, I noticed that they weren't de-shedded properly- nor their nails filed evenly. Some nails seemed to be a lot longer than other nails. And I'm sorry - $300 for two dogs, they should have looked perfect! Also the additional hot spot treatment they added made the areas worse on their bums. I 100% do NOT recommend that for your fluff babies. Anyway to conclude my experience- I had automatically booked for the next appointment- I called to cancel and the person who answered the phone was rude, he asked me why I wanted to cancel and I started to explain, he ended up getting sassy with me and ended the call. Overall, this place is overpriced for the service and don't handle your pets with care. If in the phone I got an apology and you asked to try and do better this time- this would be a different situation. I'd not come back. read more

I have been a customer for months and I can now finally and safely say that this shop does not care for your pet, but for their profits. I have been having a series of bad experiences and kept on going back because I wanted to support local businesses during covid, trying to be understanding. But after the last traumatic experience and my dogs' extensive bruises I feel the duty of letting everyone know about what's behind this overpriced and unprofessional dog salon. Please save yourself a headache and your puppy a trauma! These photos are from the last time I went for the usual monthly full bath + anal glands expressions + nail clip + teeth brush; I booked my appointment abundantly in advance and showed up on time specifying that I went there on purpose for this appointment, therefore I could not wait outside for more than the 45 mins they advertise and that we had discussed over the phone. An hour later I still hadn't heard from them and I went back inside finding a complete mess: the place was overcrowded with highly distressed dogs crying and pulling (the same ones I saw when I dropped off my dog). They were so late on their schedule that my dog was still crying alone and scared in the same corner where I left him, tied to a very short leash and with a guy that was aggressively trying to put a muzzle on his face that I did not know about (they were fully aware that my dog is a rescue and therefore already traumatized, and that he needs gentle care and someone kind). I got very nervous and the girl at the front desk blamed the mess on the owner, reassuring me that my dog would be next + she invited me to sit down and have a beer (first time they ever offered something and that they let me stay inside). I patiently waited for them to finally start the service, after another 20 minutes of them being absolutely disorganized, they finally start giving him his bath and my dog was left unattended in the washing station which led him to jump off scared, hurting his paws. I witnessed a number of unsafe maneuvers and "grabbings", his anal glands were not expressed and when I reminded them that they still hadn't washed his teeth they were charging me for, they literally took a brush, stuck it in his mouth for a second, and gave me the dog back (even though I suspected they were not actually cleaning his teeth and asked to please "really get in there"). My dog was so traumatized from by the whole experience (overall it lasted two awful hours), and it made me feel extremely sorry for all the previous times I dropped him off without checking if they were actually taking care of him, but also for paying a lot of money for overpriced services that were not performed + tipping them so much money. I was so overwhelmed and mad that I decided to not make a scene in front of the front-desk girl, also because she kept on blaming the owner (whom several friends of mine and other clients had bad experiences with) and seemed like she was about to have a melt-down. I tried to have empathy but she still asked me to pay the full fee, and once I got back home and realized my dog was full of bruises I contacted them to solve this privately demanding at least a full refund + providing a detailed description of the events (recorded by cameras) and photos of the marks. They avoided addressing the issue and ultimately refused the refund. This city is full of overpriced dog salons, please choose one that doesn't hurt your pups and that doesn't just care about money !!! Hope this is helpful, and please consider that they offer discounts if you write a positive review which is probably why you see some good feedback. read more

Sadly, I have to write this. Upon my first experience with C&C I had an amazing groomer and the whole experience was truly perfect. The groomer had a way that kept my nervous Pomeranian relaxed. And Beary was in and out in 45 minutes (exactly what it should be at a boutique groomer). When I called for the next groom, I found out that groomer had left the company. They assured me the current groomer was well experienced and we were in good hands. After dropping off Beary I was told it would be about an hour. An hour later I called to check to find out the groomer had gone to lunch mid groom. I thought it strange but I waited another 1/2 hour and decided to go back. Beary was sitting on the floor washed, (dry thankfully) but shaking. He was so nervous. The groomer still had not returned. I expressed my frustration. The groomer came back and I asked how long it would be. He said maybe 20 minutes. 30 minutes later Beary was done. But not really. The cleanup haircut was nowhere near done. I told the manager and he asked if they should fix him. Breary was shaking so hard and thirsty and had to go the bathroom and so I said no it was already too much. Mind you, this was like an assembly line of dogs (where Beary waited then a dog behind Beary was waiting), like Petco (the exact thing I want to avoid coming to a boutique groomer). Just now I called to see if I could use self wash. The guy sounded grumpy and said newsome won't allow it and they're only offering full service grooming. I let him know that last time my experience was really bad and I preferred to only use self service when available. He said okay no problem. Not, I'm sorry or even a question to ask what happened. I'm so sad about this because C&C started off so strong. But they clearly have lowered their standards in customer service and don't care about the performance of their groomers. read more

I have been bringing my 2 year old Bernedoodle, Roman to Collar & Comb on Sunset since he was a puppy. I am saddened to write this follow up review, but after our last experience with Collar & Comb it feels necessary to share what happened so that it doesn't happen to anyone else. When we showed up for Roman's grooming appointment, I had a picture on hand of what length of cut I would like. The groomer informed me he had a bit of matting on his chest and that they'd do their best. I wasn't too worried, as I had spent the last two days brushing him out specifically so that the matting wasn't an issue and trusted in their team that if something drastic would have to happen that they would call before moving forward. Upon picking him up I walked into their store glancing around for my pup and saw one dog sitting down but surely didn't think it was mine but in fact, it was. To say I was in complete shock would be an understatement, he was completely shaved and unrecognizable. After getting him home and really looking at him I saw long tufts of hair around his chin, ears and belly accompanied with spots shaved to his skin in other areas. Not to mention his tail! In no way, shape or form would this ever come close to even being considered somewhat resembling a 'doodle' cut. The most alarming part of this was that his WHISKERS and EYELASHES were also completely cut off and he was shaved so close to his bum that he had visible razor burn. So not only was my Bernedoodle completely shaved, it was a terrible shave job. Just awful. There was no explanation when I picked him up, no communication whatsoever. I was simply handed his report card that sang my dogs praises of being extremely well-mannered and sweet. In shock, I paid and left in disbelief. Roman sat in my bedroom for an entire day from the trauma he endured and continues to deal with incredible discomfort. His spacial awareness is off due to the fact that his whiskers were shaved off. He is constantly biting and licking his bum because of razor burn. The next day, when the shock finally started to wear off I called the store and requested to speak with the manager. I was informed me that he wasn't in, but would call me back in about an hour. During this time, I reached out to Paul (the owner) who immediately let me know that he was out of town, so I asked him to please give me a call when he got back into town. An entire week went by and I heard nothing, from anyone! So, I reached out again and finally spoke John, the manager. Turns out that John knew exactly what happened during Roman's appointment. Right away he acknowledged the botched grooming and apologized and then proceeded to explain what happened. Apparently, a groomer who was doing her VERY FIRST cut under the 'watchful eye' of a head groomer got my dog as her first practice run. The head groomer stepped away for 5-10 minutes and by the time he returned, she had finished his cut. The fact that they are hiring groomers who don't have the basic knowledge not to cut off a dogs whiskers and eyelashes scares me and is incredibly alarming! What made it even tougher and what really baffles me is the complete and utter disregard from John, the manager. He apologized, said now they know not to leave a groomer in training alone and refunded my money, but to not reach out or return my call especially when he was completely aware of what had happened is honestly unbelievable. Not only has he chewed out one of the other personal assistants that I work with, he's personally given me attitude and shows that all that he cares about his money, not customer service. They flagged me as a "NO SHOW" when I gave them a heads up. Reality check: we're still living in a pandemic. If you want me to bring my dog and spread covid better think about your business values. I love this place. My pup doesn't want to be bathed ever but Collar & Comb is the best at making her feel comfortable. It's unlike other chain type places where the employee turnover is rapid and there is a factory feel with dogs in crates and a "just get it done attitude". Here my beloved dog is treated with kindness by the bathers that clearly genuinely care about all dogs and their happiness. The basics are all top tier - clean facility, ease of making appointments, competitive pricing and excellent grooming. The boutique vibe and trendy decor are a bonus. I loved that they answered the phone, had a pretty shop, and were open. What I didn't like is a $20 unknown fee cause my dog was 18. He still had eye goop and and dirt on his neck. The fastest grooming session I've ever had. Then they automatically gave me an option of 20% or more for tip. $160 is a bit ridiculous for an 8lb dog. I Originally asked if they had a self serve wash and they said no. Yet, they have a self serve tub right when you walk in. Let down. I won't go back, won't recommend....didn't even cut his nails. Have changed my review. I didn't examine her thoroughly until later in the evening. The cut was in fact botched. She wasn't scissor cut as was described, but razored. There are divots everywhere. I called and was offered $20 off the next cut. He did apologize and let me know the young woman (Kat) was let go as she botched other cuts. I was told when I initially arrived for the appt. that it was the higher fee ($114) for breed specific grooming. I wasn't thrilled but went with it. So, I emailed them and indicated that $20 off is not adequate. The next grooming should be gratis. I never heard back. And to add to this saga, Kat punctured my dogs eardrum. The way they run their business is wrong and feels like a complete scam. when you sign up they take a card on file and they schedule a lot of appointments in different dates without your acknowledgment or permission and the way they make money is out of cancellation fees from the card they have on file. Very disturbing. They also tip themselves without my permission. I called the manager and asked for a refund, but they lied to me that there is gonna be a penalty fee for a refund even though the charge was just made, and they would not communicate with me or answer any of my phone calls. They also charged for services that they did not do. You can clearly see they don't really like dogs and they just want to make money. Really bad customer service. I'm so disappointed that the manager hung up on m and did not try to resolve the situation. My 14 week Maltipoo desperately needed a grooming and since I'm a new puppy owner I wanted to find the best place! I looked at several places, but Collar and Comb had the most positive reviews! The pictures and website drew me in right away. I mean who doesn't love luxury! I was able to get an appointment a week later from the moment I called. When I brought my puppy in, right away I felt at ease. The groomers were so attentive with my little girl and assured me that they were going to take their time given that this would be her first grooming. They were spot on with how long it would take, which allowed me to plan out my next few hours. The groom itself was amazing! She came back smelling so good and looking so cute (thanks for the bow!) I mean she was cute before but she had shaggy grandpa hair around her eyes. TMI- her anal glands are top notch too, her poops have been so clean. My only complaint was there were no bubbles!! Would have loved to sip on some champs while she was getting groomed but I totally understand why this couldn't happen, but I'll be looking forward to this benefit once its allowed.
