A solid Lexington style bbq joint. Breakfast, lunch or dinner, they do it well. Their bbq is smoky and flavorful with red slaw on the side and white bread rolls. It is chopped finer than what you might find elsewhere in the area. Sauce is a vinegar base with a bit of spice. Hush puppies are good, but not the best in town. Making up for that are the foot long hot dog and burgers. And fountain cheerwine. Yum. Breakfast may be my favorite meal here. Then again, I love crispy livermush covered in Texas Pete. If you're not from the western piedmont, you may not know what that is. It's similar to scrapple in Pennsylvania, just go ahead and give it a try. Omelets are massive and filled with whatever you'd like them to stuff in there. Hashbrowns are crunchy and similarly large. I like their home fries more, but often feel torn by the choice. But the excellent (Lex-style) sauce is there on the table - load it up, and you've got a great sandwich. My big complaint here - and it's big - is that the hushpuppies are too big. To get them cooked, they have a super-thick exterior, which can taste burned, while the interior is barely cooked through. Batter tastes fine - why those big ol' pups? We came 20 minutes before closing time on a Saturday, and the place was packed with folks who are long-time fans (servers knew many folks by name). Great vibe, good BBQ, nicely off the beaten path. Had chopped BBQ, slaw, hushpuppies, baked beans, and a deep fried lemon-pepper ear of corn. All were pretty tasty. The BBQ was moist and flavorful. Best BBQ ever. When we go home to North Carolina, we always take back home to Georgia, at least 12 pounds of BBQ and slaw. We had the small BBQ tray with the best hushpuppies ever before we left. The owners and staff are always great. I just wish they would open one where we live now. read more

Been eating here all my life, it's one of our best bbq places in town. They are one of the few left still smoking their own meat. Their bbq sandwiches are delicious and their hushpupoies are wonderful. Hush puppies are sold by the each, dont let that fool you though they are big fat and yummy. Coming back from Dan Nicholas, we don't know the area very well so here we are, in their defense I hate greasy places that are 98% meat patties and the only "healthy" green is a chopped salad, still with ham and piles of orange fake cheese. That's what I had a sad salad with piles of ham and cheese, 3 tomato squares and piles of pickle. Pickles??? Yuck. Hush puppies were dry. Kids had wings, greasy wings. Crinkle cut frozen fries. IMHO there is no better BBQ anywhere. The seating is limited so you may have to wait for a seat during busy times but well worth the wait. The staff is great friendly and your tea glass will never go empty. The foot long hotdogs are great. They also have a wonderful breakfast with all the favorites. The service was great and the sides were delicious but my chopped pork bbq was not good. It had the texture and consistency of undrained canned tuna. Unfortunately, that was the only bbq they had on the menu but the rest of the menu seemed interesting. The barbecue is not sauced, tastes bland, served with the same low end frozen crinkle cut fries as any of these places. Seriously guys how hard is it to chop a potato? The sauce is almost 90% vinegar with very little flavor. I doused the pork in hot sauce and salt and pepper then it was good. I've been eating at this place since I was a kid, and after traveling many places in the country, College BBQ is still at the top of my list for best places to get BBQ. One of Salisbury's hidden gems. There is not a lot of seating, although they do have a drive thru that operates very quickly. I highly recommend this place to BBQ lovers everywhere. read more

Coming from Texas I was hoping to try some authentic N.C. BBQ, I'm hoping this ain't it. The pork (that's the only BBQ meat they server), was tender, but really had no flavor. I tried drenching it in the sauce, but that seemed to be just water, vinegar and Texas Pete hot sauce. The slaw had a nice kick to it, but the hush puppies didn't make a whole lot of sense. No cheese, no pickles, no onions, no "real" sauce. I'll try another BBQ place, but Texas has this place hands down. I have a goal since I just moved back to Rowan county and that is to eat at every bbq joint in the county. I recently ate at college bbq and was pleased with it. I have been going here since the 70's and I have enjoyed the barbecue but I am sorry they changed recipe or have started buying can chili and the footlong hot dogs are not as good as they used to be. For the barbecue to me it is very good and plenty of it. I go there whenever I am in Salisbury for either business or having to go to The VA Hospital. The waitresses are all ways friendly and smiling and what ever you are drinking they keep it full. read more

If I could give a 0-star rating, I would. The owner arranged to cater a wedding for my best friend's sister. They were supposed to show up at 4:30 and here we stand at 5:20, unable to reach anyone by telephone because they are closed. The mother of the bride placed an order, paid for the meal in advance, and here we stand with no food. If you were unable to cater or deliver, then why not communicate that? Lack of communication and a failure to appear has lead to this review. We will be seeking a refund, plus damages. read more

As far as food goes, this place is just fine. Meat is tender and flavorful, hush puppies are not worth the calories. The big problem is the wait. It is usually full and takes forever to get your food. With kids this is disaster. The price is higher than places with much better food and wait time. At lunch it can be very difficult to get out of the parking lot because of the to go window line. I would go to Richard's any day. read more

I live in PA & my heritage is in the Salisbury/GQ area. My brother sends College BBQ to us several times a yr. Cannot get any better. College Bar-B-Que slow cooks BBQ the old fashioned way over wood. Their BBQ is moist and smokey and is great even with no sauce. Their sandwiches are overstuffed and the red slaw is fantastic as are the hushpuppies. They make a great foot long hot dog too. The wait staff is quick and friendly.
