I grew up eating traditional paletas (ice cream bars) and all the ones at Colmelati take me right back to childhood. They're so delicious and they have a wide variety of flavors. I've been here so much (especially over the summer) and I have yet to try them all. My hands-down favorite one is the nuez (walnut). It's creamy, the right amount of sweet, and the addition of walnut chunks gives it a really satisfying texture. I feel so lucky that I live so close to this gem. This is a nice ice cream spot, and my kids enjoyed their cookies and cream ice cream. A small scoop in a cup costs four dollars, which is reasonable. However, the main issue is the lack of flavors. While they offer both milk and water-based options, which each have their own great taste, they're missing one of the most basic and popular flavors...chocolate!!!( spongebob!!). That's a big deal for us because it's my kids' favorite, and unfortunately, they don't carry it here. They only have cookies and cream and some other type of chocolate flavor we're not familiar with. As Hispanics, we understand the unique flavor selections to some extent, but it's surprising that an ice cream shop wouldn't have plain chocolate. Another downside is the limited menu options. You can't get nachos with cheese and hot Cheetos here, even though it seems like the kind of place that would offer them. The choices feel a bit restricted. On top of that, the lady behind the counter didn't seem very patient with my kids while they were trying to decide on a flavor. A really great hole in the wall find! It's on the corner in a little strip mall, almost like a blink and you'll miss it type of place. They do occupy two units but one is their kitchen and one is the entrance. Enter through the plain looking door, not the colorful one. They have oaxacan ice cream which has some very interesting flavors like Tuna, Churro, and oaxacan cafe. They also have paletas in various flavors, as well as smoothies and both hot/iced coffee. They also have mango with chamoy and tajin! The service was very friendly. I saw one of the owners talking with the customers stating how his father had taught him to make the ice cream. I first saw this place on IG for their Oaxacan horchata- horchata with a scoop of cactus fruit (tuna) ice cream. It looked super tasty and I hope to try it soon! They have many ice cream flavors that you can get in a cup or cone. All their ice cream whether fruit or milk based have quality ingredients. I sampled a ton of flavors and all the fruit ones are very fruit forward (so many fruit options) and the Oaxacan chocolate flavor is the best! That's some real chocolate right there. They also have a wide variety of paletas ($3 each) and I thought I knew what flavor I wanted coming in but honestly it's so hard to choose. They alll look bomb. I tried the fresas con crema paleta and it had the right amount of sweetness. I'll be back again and every time I'll try something new. That's my plan and I'm sticking with it. Place have is great but their hours are conflicting between Yelp and Instagram. I made the drive with my girls assuming will be open for the summer hours and when we got there at 8PM was close. I also noticed the person that was working today 7/21/24 is not the first time that reject providing service to customer that show up even 15-20 minutes before closing.
