We went to the local Farmer's Market on Sunday and then said we absolutely had to have ice cream from here. We originally went to one in Oregon and just thought it was delicious and kept threatening to come here and finally did. Once in the store, the staff was very helpful in letting me try the some flavors I was interested in and settled on Cinnamon Snickerdoodle. The flavor was divine! This Salt & Straw location is so small on the exterior you might actually miss it while driving by on Ventura Blvd. There is no indoor seating and just a single bench outside and only sometimes. If you come here for a sweet treat, expect to eat it standing or walking around on Ventura. There is metered street parking right by Salt & Straw as well as free street parking the next side street over, though you will have to search around for a bit and walk a little for this option. Salt & Straw is famous for their more eccentric ice cream flavors and there really hasn't been any that I've ever hated. My mom and I recently came by to try out their Berries series, she like the Habanero berry mix and I got the birthday cake / blackberry combo. Mine was the less unique of the two and I think as a result, less exciting / interesting to eat. This was my first time trying Salt & Straw, and while the ice cream itself was amazing, the overall experience didn't match. The low rating is entirely due to the customer service. This past Monday (4/20) around 9:30 PM, we went to pay and were left standing at the register while two employees talked, with no acknowledgment or direction. We assumed the employee who helped us would ring us up, but as we walked over, another employee repeatedly said probably about 5x "over here" in a very rude, condescending tone, like we were doing something wrong. It wasn't what he said, it was how he said it. The lack of basic communication and unnecessary attitude made the experience uncomfortable and just weird. Unfortunately, several people continuously cut in front of us who have waiting for our turn. I even told one couple that there was a line, but they ignored me and walked right in. The same couple later cut in front of me again while I was paying. What was most frustrating was the lack of direction from the staff. I asked an employee whether there was an actual line or if customers could simply walk in, but they did not provide a clear answer or address the situation. There was no effort to manage the line, guide customers, or ensure that those who had been waiting were served fairly. The ice cream itself was good, but good products do not make up for poor customer service and the lack of basic crowd management. We happened to stop in during lunch time and there was no line (I've never seen this location without one) and were waited on by the fabulous Julius. We wanted to try the Limited Flavors - they all seemed so good - Birthday Cakes & Blackberries, Oishii Strawberry Pretzel Salad, Goat Cheese Marionberry Habanero, Banana Bread with Strawberry Jam and Huckleberry Cornbread. Julius was so kind to let us try samples of each one - and boy that alone was just a fun time. I ended up going with the Oishii Strawberry Pretzel, the strawberry was a little lighter than the Banana Bread with Strawberry Jam and I loved the addition of the pretzel (which really didn't even taste like a pretzel) but the crunch and sweet combo was a winner! I love that Salt and Straw have limited edition flavors that are always changing - a perfect reason to return time after time, along with amazing service! A great win! The staff are super helpful and didn't mind getting us the 5 samples we each tried. I loved the new pickle ice cream... super original and almost ordered it for reals. My favorite here is always Honey Lavender. I honestly love the color so very much but since it was night time and I couldn't experience the color, I decided to branch out and try one of their limited edition flavors. I chose the Chocolate Zucchini bread flavor in a waffle cone. My wife chose the same. We both couldn't believe how actually delicious this was. Every bite was so satisfying and we felt the dopamine flying left and right. Ice cream really is the best. After they scoop your choice, you are sent to the register so things to move fast. The thing we were shocked about was the $18 price for 2 cones. This is probably because we just came back from Japan where ice cream this size was under $5, lol it was a bit of a shock. I know we're in LA on a fancy street but idk... I think it could be more fun if Salt & Straw dropped their prices down. We would come here more often because it is a fabulous experience. We parked on the street close to the shop and it was after 8pm so we didn't have to pay. Salt & Straw is magical and open until 11pm so you could enjoy all day and night.
