The Block Gourmet Deli - Brooklyn Sun - Obviously good quality meats, but otherwise nothing special. Probably wouldn't get again.

It's really easy to shrug off a deli/sandwich shop by saying, "It's just sandwiches, nothing special about that" like some reviews I've seen. I think those reviews miss the entire point of the neighborhood deli. I've been two days in a row this week. Once for myself, then again for my family after they heard me rave about the sandwiches and people here. Farrah (sp?) greeted me both days with a, "Hi honey! Be right with you!". You don't get a greeting like that very much anymore, and that same care and effort she put into greeting her customers is evident in the construction of the sandwiches too! I mean when was the last time a business - even local - asked your name before you left, unless it was to put on your coffee cup? We've had the club, the Brooklyn, and the veggie caprese and all of them are phenomenal. I don't think you could make a bad choice at The Block - you're gonna be happy and satisfied. Maybe it is "just a sandwich", and maybe I'm overhyping it because of the way the love they have for the customers and product comes through the entire experience....but even if I am, isn't that the entire point of your neighborhood deli?

The Block serves fresh salads, sandwiches, pasta salads, and soups from 11: 00 AM - 3: 00 PM. We were greeted immediately upon entering by a lady (I'm sorry, I have forgotten her name). She shared with us that they have been catering and operating the deli for 8 years and that everything is made after ordering, nothing is pre-made or packaged. She was very patient with us as we decided which of the tantalizing offerings we were going to choose. The inside was pretty small with a couple of 2-seater tables. Bagged chips and a cooler with variety of canned and bottled beverages are available in the space for purchase. We ordered our food to go. I chose the Chopped Chef Salad. Readers, this salad was HUGE (the take-out container could barely close). It was loaded with greens, turkey, ham, red onions, cucumber, boiled eggs, tomato, and both Swiss and cheddar cheeses. I was thrilled to discover that they use only Boar Head cheeses, my favorite brand). Everything in the salad was fresh and delicious and the homemade ranch dressing was heavenly. How did it take so long for us to find them? I am so glad that have found them and that they are located close to our home, because I can foresee this being a frequent lunch spot!

This glorious establishment serves some of the most delicious Mediterranean cuisine I've had the great pleasure to consume, not just in Louisville but in my life. We tried: -Syrian falafel wrap: homemade falafel, french fries, veggies, tarator sauce (tahini/garlic/lemon ). -Vegetarian sampler: falafel, seasoned rice, hummus, baba ganouj, salad, stuffed grape leaves, tarator sauce, pita with JJ's red sauce (YES). Everything was SO good. Beautifully blended and layered flavors, especially the hummus and baba ganouj about which I tend to be very picky. I could have eaten buckets of both. So yes, get the food, but honestly the reason I plan to return again and again is because of the owner, Mr. JJ. This guy is everything. He's kind, efficient, conscientious, a fabulous chef (obviously), intelligent, and has a great sense of humor. During our visit the AC was out, and despite being hot, tired, and likely overwhelmed he was genuinely wonderful, making sure we had everything we needed for a truly memorable and delicious dining experience. Instead of tipping, JJ's requests donations to support feeding hungry people who can't afford healthy food. Truly a gem of a person, a gem of a place. Speed (safely) on over now. Go.

I've had Mediterranean food in Dubai, and this is honestly the closest I've had to that here. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and just really well made. And I have to say... I don't even like hummus, but theirs was out of this world. That alone says a lot. The owner was running the place himself and still putting out amazing food with great presentation. He was also incredibly kind and welcoming--we had a short conversation, and his energy was just so genuine. Parking-wise, I only noticed one handicap spot, but there were multiple close parking spaces nearby that could still work well for anyone needing easier access.

Deciding what to order was another story. I let my indecision rule the day and went with the Bayou Sampler, along with an appetizer of Boudin Balls. Jambalaya, Gumbo, Red Beans and Rice, and Étouffée, with a side of dirty rice, now that's a lot of Cajun goodness! I knew there was no way I could eat it all in one sitting, so I paced myself. I started with just one of the three excellent Boudin Balls and saved the other two for later. When the sampler arrived, it smelled incredible. I enjoyed everything, but if I had to rank them, the Étouffée was definitely my favorite, followed by the Jambalaya, Gumbo, and then Red Beans and Rice. And just to be clear, everything was good! That's simply my personal ranking. I also have to mention the excellent piece of alligator sausage that came with the Red Beans and Rice. That was a nice bonus. I rounded out the meal with a cold glass of red ale...or maybe two. And I can't forget to mention the bartenders. All three provided excellent service and helped make the evening a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I filled up my to go box and headed out the door satisfied. I definitely won't wait so long before returning to Lou Lou!

The waitress was nice and ran down some of her favorite dishes since it was my first visit. They have a lunch specials of half sandwiches and salad or soup which is what I decided on-their Seasonal Salad and their She-Crab Soup. The salad looks simple on the menu but OMG! It is so packed full of flavor with the pepitas, golden raisins, bleu cheese and absolutely fantastic maple vinaigrette. It may be my new favorite salad! The She-Crab soup was piping hot and brimming with crab. My mom had the Muffuletta & Cajun fries-those fries are to die for! Lastly, you can't leave without trying the bread pudding; it is truly awesome! Needless to say, I will be back. They have a great happy hour I'd like to try!
