It was a dark and dreary day ... the tracks from past, present and future leading through the horizon to nowhere but they pull at you to follow. But you can't miss the calling ... a GIN JOINT doing what GIN JOINTS do best mesmerizing the innocent with a demure tug ... a tug that connects legs to feet to brake pedals doing what all GIN JOINTS strive to do .... come to me ... and without thinking turn signals flash and cars come to a stop. The allure is real ... the temptation complete and the response is a quickened pace designed to avoid discovery. Tim, the barkeep in his freshly starched white shirt and neatly pressed black spats, works the crowd of bar hangers most of whom have not invested an hour of time on the card in years. Tim knows their stories and their choices; greeting the familiar with a nod of his closely shaven head. Quick to notice the stranger his white entrenched arm stretches out "I'm Tim and you are ....?" Leaving me no opportunity to shrink in my anonymity against the wooden comfort of a bar that has held generations of libations. "What can I pour you Dave,?" Yes he remembers; my name etching it onto his grey matter for future reference. In a duel of identity knowledge I toss one back in his direction, "a tall one TIM ... a tall one. TIM." Holding the amber elixir in my hand and enjoying the coolness of the chilled glass I begin to notice the collective of former living beasts and fish keeping watch over Tim and his charges. The retired buttocks of a long past buck with tailed raised sits above the entrance to the gents place of rest and recovery. Young men in shorts are elevating the orange globe of Naismith's game towards their respective nets on all three monitors bringing light into the dark comfort of The Colonial. Shining flying pigs grace Tim's path amongst the bottles and droughts." The corner neons flashing come on's for breweries was only one reason for this journey into a neighborhood's corner place of quiet and escape ... knowing I was hungry for grub Tim tossed out a special for under seven bucks ... Bowl of soup plus a six incher ... he knew I was not a stranger with a bulging billfold but the hunger was apparent from my vacant glances ... the mind was elsewhere but the belly was Tim's to fill. "Sold and give me those fried dill pieces to start it off!" The broth was hot and full of meat, pasta and veggies and most importantly flavor .... someone in Tim's kitchen knows how to clip and shred and blend to satisfy those whose hungry lips are also discerning in their tasting ability. The fried chips were covered with a crust that provided a cover for the dills that satisfied and the chips clearly didn't come from an old grocer's jar. The chicken cheese steak arrived with fried onions in view but the first bite of slightly hardened roll edge leading into smooth soft dough before arriving at the cheese and onion laden chicken sighed ahhhh ... someone knows a baker and that mystery blonde in jeans who magically appears from the back room before vanishing into thin air knows how to build a lunch. Leaning into the wood edging the linoleum topped bar my head flashes 'another tall one and then one more' but the pocked face regular of unkown years sitting shotgun by the door verifies the cost of such choices. The hard cruel world awaits with a choice situated along those tracks whose curving lines pulled me to eye ball this corner resting spot. Which side will my travels of the day encompass? Not another for today but soon I will once again call out "pour me tall one Tim!" We all need a dark comfortable safe joint where the barkeep in his starched shirt says "you need anything else" and truly wants to care for you. Plus he remembered my name .... Time to roll ... get the engine roaring and chasing where life leads next.

I am having a tough time grading this little gem!! I have it at a 92 (out of 100), how many points are 1. They made me a sesame garlic bread roll, not on menu. 2. $7.85, yes $7.85. 3. Bar; TVs, beer and no kids. 4. A Jack Daniels statue (and mini gruden). These facts prob add 4 points and make this top cheesesteak?? Yes/no. Either way I am very glad a finally found Colonial Cafe!! Another place I have driven by a thousand times. I would add a stop at Colonial Cafe to a day trip. According to memorabilia on walls, they appear to be very 'civic minded' which is always a plus.

So this place has a 5-Star average. I believe it should be 5-Star for dive bars. this is the epitome of dive bars that just happens to serve some food. even my 13-year-old twin boys say "ewww, this is a bad bar. they actually serve food here? (see photo)" I explained that this had good reviews and we were looking for a local place with good reviews, since our family is not from the area. I ordered the pepper cheesesteak, my sons had blt and chicken parm. they were all just OK. my wife had a diet coke that had NO carbonation. it was flat. I guess I can live with that, since prices are modest. but what gets me is that this is what most would call a "townie bar". yup we all know what those are like. don't expect a smile or great service unless you live within a half mile of the joint. To wit, I asked the bartender a question upon walking in and he did not respond. I asked the customers seated around the bar if there was any server available. they just kinda laughed at me and never answered. I said, "well, y'all are a friendly sort." and they just stared. don't come here if you are looking for food or even a drink. It sucks.

    Wise chips?! Wow! #nostalgia

Small mom&pop cafe full of great tasting food and nostalgia! When you go be sure to get any of the following: cream of crab soup, The Reuben sandwich and/or a cheesesteak hoagie! Tim, the bartender, was a pleasure, very helpful and personable! The food came out hot and fast! Kiss the cook! I'm looking forward to returning! That is all...

My girlfriend and I stopped in for a few beers on a Saturday night in January. It's at the mall so plenty of parking. There were two bartenders working and the place was only about 1/3 full. We sat at the bar and each had two beers: the All Blacked Out (6.2% oatmeal stout) and Le Petit Démon (7% Belgian blonde ale). Both were very good. The taproom has a lot of fun aviation flourishes, like an old school flip board schedule that displays the beer menu, a runway on the floor leading to the bar, tables made from old wing engine turbines, and an actual plane hanging from the ceiling. It's very spacious and well decorated inside. There were a few families there with seven kids all under 3 plus a baby, and the kids were running around chasing each other while screaming bloody murder. I have a hyperactive child of my own and don't mind kids in breweries, but I know this can be a contentious topic for many in NJ breweries, with some breweries going so far as to institute 21+ hours. To their credit, after awhile (and without prompting from any patrons), one of the bartenders walked over and politely asked the adults to coral their children, and they did comply, and so peace was restored. All told, a decent spot to grab a beer with many good choices. While I prefer Bonesaw's Glassboro location, we would probably come back here some time.

The only reason why I deducted a star from this review is because the service was abysmal. We walked in mid-day on the day after Christmas. It was a rare PTO day for me, and my mom and I had just wrapped up some shopping in the mall. The brewery is industrial with a large plane and cute skeleton pilot overhead. I noticed a vintage atlas accent in their private room, which was closed at the time, that would lay the backdrop for some fun photos I'm sure. All told, the brewery space was well done. You could tell it had the same Bonesaw brand as their flagship location in Glassboro too. I had a general idea of what I wanted to order from checking their menu in advance. There was one person ahead of me in line, but then a second line opened up. No pleasantries from the bartender, just very snappy behavior. I felt extremely rushed in ordering my flight. I asked for advice on which seltzers to order, and he said the raspberry and peach were their best sellers, so I went with them without even perusing the rest of the seltzer list. I also ordered the pumpkin queen cream ale and the tropical hearts sour. As I was signing my receipt, he ordered the next guy up, and the two of them talked over my flight. It was gross, like have y'all forgotten about Covid, the flu, RSV? Please wait the literal two seconds for me to add a tip and sign my name to get out of the way. This wasn't some packed to the gills bar, so there was no reason for it. I hoped that it was just a fluke, like maybe he had a crummy holiday or something, but I mentioned the service in one of my Untappd check-ins and one of my Untappd friends replied saying they experienced the exact same thing on their visit and it made them leave after just a couple beers. I'd say they should consider some coaching on customer service if they want repeat visitors, as I'd hesitate to return to this location personally. As for the beers, I'd say the tropical hearts was my favorite. The pumpkin came with a sugared rim, which was cool but sticky as it was messily done and went down the side of the glass. I wasn't a huge fan of either seltzer as they were on the artificial side, an issue that afflicts many seltzers. I wouldn't say avoid this space, as the beer was generally good and the space is nice. I do hope the service improves in time.

We enjoyed a pre-dinner drink at the bar, and we were so impressed by how friendly the bartenders were. They were engaging and social. They set off our evening on a high note! My Pink Jaguar cocktail was beautiful and caused quite a buzz among the bar patrons! We opted to sit outside, and we are glad we did. The space is open and breezy but fully covered. No need to worry if a passing shower makes its way overhead. Steamed clams in white wine and Truffle fries for the table to start. Yum! All entrees are accompanied by a house salad or Ceasar salad. Our group ordered the Limone Chicken, Chicken Sfiziosa, Steak Frite, and the Eggplant Meatballs/Risotto. Everything came out piping hot and delicious. We loved everything. I know their linguine is house made, but not certain of the other pasta varietals. Cheesecake and Cannoli for dessert, because why not? Really nice experience! Our server was sweet and super-efficient. My only question for Filomena's Lakeview is "Where is the lake?" :)

We arrived around 3:45 PM without reservations and they immediately took us to an open table. Iced Waters were instant. Our server was very pleasant and she took our order. Bread quickly followed with two types served: Italian with sesame seeds and focaccia; however I was puzzled that it was served with a plate of hot peppers and onions in a juice. It seemed off but perhaps it's a Jersey thing. I've been all over in Italy and have never seen this. Olive oil would have been fine along with a splash of balsamic vinegar. Either way I skipped bread condiments. Next came the Fried Tomatoes topped with Lump Crab as an appetizer, but once again I had another head-scratcher, as this dish wasn't typical. First the entire dish lacked seasoning plus salt. Then red tomatoes were used and we all know what happens when you try to fry one. It turns to water after you cut it. The lump crab is what probably made this dish pricey but 3 thinly slices of a red tomato caught me off guard. Now for the final knock out: I ordered the Bone In Pork Chop and impressed that I was asked how Iiked it prepared? I said 145 degrees. She said, you mean well- done. I stated no, that would be in a range of medium. Lo and behold, it was fantastically preparation temperature, but it came topped with the same peppers and onions concoction that came out with the bread. I had no idea that this was a smothered situation. My broccolini was also a mystery. The mashed potatoes were mid. Now on to my daughter's chicken Parmesan: She said that it lacked flavor and had to add salt and pepper and also stated that the sauce was loose and there was too little of it. My wife enjoyed her Salmon. Jersey is cooking differently!!!!! I forgot to add: Underneath of my pork chop I discovered a mysterious piece of corn. I had no corn in my dish??????

Parking was a challenge on a Friday night as every space was full and turning around in the back lot involves making a k turn around the other vehicles who are also looking for a spot. We ended up parking down the street and walking over. We were seated immediately, as the bar has ample seating, both high tops and regular tables. My bff wasn't in the mood for a cocktail so we opted for Arnold palmers. Now, I am a HUGE avocado fan and I had heard about their infamous avocado fries so I was super excited about trying them. That may or may not have been the main reason for my visit. The avocado fries are fresh large slices of avocado breaded in panko and fried with a sweet and tangy spicy mayo sauce. I loved them but my bff wasn't as excited. He informed me he isn't a huge fresh avocado fan, so this one is for the avocado lovers. We also opted for the chicken parm rollers which is described as "Chicken mixed with ricotta cheese, herbs and spices rolled in panko breadcrumbs served with house made marinara and shaved parmesan" - they are chicken meatballs. We expected something else and now that we've had them and I re-read the description I'm not sure what we had in mind but it wasn't this. They were just okay. I think if they were placed on a plate with seasoned whipped ricotta and drizzled with pesto it could boost the flavor experience. For our entrees my bff got the chicken strips with the sweet and sassy sauce and I opted for the KO burger. My KO burger was delicious. The seeded brioche bun was buttery and fresh and the burger itself was flavorful. The fries were also fantastic. Fresh cut and sprinkled with a sweet seasoning, I didn't even feel the need to add ketchup or a side of aioli or anything. They were perfect. I didn't try my bffs chicken tenders but the sweet and sassy sauce tasted just like buffalo sauce. Pretty sure it was the wrong sauce but he didn't say anything to our server so that's on us. If you are looking for a bar to hang out and watch sports, get a drink, and have a great burger, I'd recommend this place - but maybe uber there.
