Our furnace was out for 72 hours in the middle of winter. We were told a non-working furnace is not considered an emergency, even though we pay nearly $150 a month for a protection plan through DTE. We ended up purchasing our own space heaters just to stay warm. We were told that once the part came in, a technician would come between 8am-6pm and would call when they were in the area. Instead, we had to call every day ourselves just to check if the part had arrived. There were no proactive updates. When the technicians finally came, there was no courtesy call, just loud knocking and confusion about why they were there. After the repair, comments were made about "issues" in our area, which felt unnecessary and unprofessional. I'm thankful the heat is back, but the communication, urgency, and customer care did not match what we expected from a DTE home protection plan. read more

Do not recommend. I spent nearly $9000 on a new Trane furnace and AC unit. After 1 summer they had to come back and refill the refrigerant because of shoddy brazing. Then, 2 years later a capacitor failed. Oh, and they damaged my siding on one of the visits. Now 5 years and 10 months after install they say my compressor is failing and they want $1900 to replace. Spoke with someone last Friday to see if they could do something and got the "let me talk to my boss". Four days later.....crickets. Don't just walk, run away from this place. DTE sent them out today to repair a leak that was coming from our HVAC but more specifically from the condensate pump. The guy showed up before the timeslot that they gave me, but I was glad to have it done sooner than later. I was very pleased that they were able to fix my issue and the guy went above and beyond he saw that the pipe/tube was the issue and ran to the hardware store to replace it for us. Fix of water heater turned into "need new water heater". Well, ok. No measurement taken, so new water heater (in stock) didn't fit. Labor to remove the "box" it stood on was free...so far, nice. Fitting was "imperfect" (got broken?) and ran out of solder (what?), so trips needed to Home Depot. Install took 7 hours, and they didn't wait to see what happened when tank filled. 1 1/2hr. later there are two leaks and my garage floor is flooded. We turned water off, so NO HOT WATER, plus leaks continuing. First two service calls were met with "no one works on Sundays and Monday is a holiday, so no service until Tuesday." The urgent message would be "forwarded to dispatch". Only on the last of 3 calls that night did the on-call person reveal that NO ONE would get back to me that night. I registered my 100% dissatisfaction on each call. DID receive a call-back the next a.m. Told that someone would be out in a "window of time" that afternoon. That service person called me in the last hour of that window, asking if it was an emergency cuz he'd like to "beat the storm" that's coming! I assured him it was (obvs that wasn't explained to him by his own company) - he said "there within 40 min". He took one look, realized that the fittings on two pipes had not been connected correctly (and correctly labeled the install person), spent 1 1/2 hours making the fix, AND beat the storm home! Very happy with the LAST service tech I will utilize from Colonial (there will be no others from this place). read more

Not only is this a concern --as I am dealing with these people AND DTE now with 95 degree weather with a small issue that they have now somehow CREATED A MUCH BIGGER ONE...I have documented what the 1st technician (shady) did. Then the the 2nd (shady) technician. Now not only do I not have a working furnace ...now my a/c blower; thermostat; fuse; wiring ; security fire alarm carbon dioxide, Cameras are all not working...all because the 2nd tech came out!!! And now DTE is saying they are waiting for upper management. This Company Sucks! My Icemaker stopped working after I put in a new Water filter. I called DTE WARRANTY they sent out this company. Disastrous Furnace and AC Installation - 6 Visits Later, Still Not Fixed Properly In July 2025, we hired Colonial Heating & Cooling (41170 Joy Rd, Plymouth, MI) to install a new furnace and central air conditioner. What should have been a straightforward job turned into months of frustration, with technicians visiting our home a total of 6 times (including the initial installation) to address repeated mistakes. It took nearly 3 months for the company to seriously respond and develop a plan to fix the full list of issues. The original installation was poorly done, leaving the entire system not working properly from the start. Ductwork was installed backwards and incorrectly, resulting in inefficient airflow and uneven temperatures throughout the house. They also failed to replace the filter box, which we expected with a complete new system. Worst of all, the furnace motherboard failed the initial day of the installation. Then shortly after due to poor installation and insulation, requiring yet another visit for replacement. Then, shortly afterward, the outdoor AC unit was making noises. Due to that it wasn't properly wired causing it to surge. They had to return on another visit to run an extra wire to resolve that problem. Then the furnace motor went out and had to be replaced, adding one more service call. Even after all these repairs, the system continues to underperform. Despite reaching out to several people at the company--including Shawn, Kevin, and Eddie--progress was painfully slow, and explanations were minimal. Customer service has been consistently poor: every time we've called, the receptionist has been rude and unhelpful. For the $10,000 we spent on a new system, we expected professional, reliable work--not endless callbacks for basic, preventable errors. The system still doesn't perform as it should, and we've completely lost trust in this company. I strongly advise against using Colonial Heating & Cooling for new HVAC installations. Get multiple quotes and choose a company with better attention to detail and customer care. read more

DTE sent them out to repair my leaking front load washer. Guy comes and spends about 5 mins in my home. Takes the front panel off and the soap dispenser drawer out. Says seals are fine, just needs to be cleaned. Leaves the drawer out and puts the panel back on. My daughter who was home cleans the filter and all the pieces and tries to put the drawer back in. No go! Front panel is on crooked, try as we may, we cannot get it lined up which means another piece is out of whack. Call the guy's cell with no response, call the company which says they will have someone out tomorrow. So I am out the washer for a night because he could not take his time to return the pieces to where he found them. LIVID! I see other DTE customers have had issues as well, must not make enough to actually do their job! read more

I've used colonial before through the dte appliance repair plan. They were great. However on December 27, I called because I had a leak under my washing machine. I called and the woman I spoke to said we have plumbers too so we will get your issue fixed. Appliance repair guy came out 11:45 am the next morning and confirmed it was a backed up drain and not washing machine. I called Colonial again and they were sending a plumber out between 1-5. At 4:55 pm I called because I had received no notification from Colonial. I was told that they would contact the service person and would let me know. I then called 4 more times that evening and texted twice and once more the next day and no information or apology from anyone. It was a no call no show. I called another company to come out and they were clear and transparent in their communication. Colonial called me Monday morning, two days after and said they were in their way out. After I already called another company. I called DTE and told them they should reconsider working with colonial because that is not how you take care of customers. I wasn't able to use my washing machine, dishwasher or kitchen sink for a couple of days because of a drain clog. So I do not recommend Colonial. read more

HORRIBLE & SCARY. The technicians sent to my house were HIGH and very dirty. Paid the service call was told I needed a professional cleaning and new fuse for a dryer unit. Called with the part a week later. showed up - put in the part , did not clean. The unit has been moved to the garage which was actually an easier location to work on. I needed the gas line put back on and the vent attached. I could have waited for my husband and should have...They told me no problem. Charged me DOUBLE (total spent was 720.00 for a limator replaced and my own vent and gas line attached - they did not supply materials) at the end and could not argue as I was scared and home alone (husband was at work) with 2 small babies. Do not waste your time with this company. We had a scheduled appointment for our a/c that broke 4 days before. I texted them the morning of them coming out. I got a voicemail stating the technician will call ahead to let you know an ETA. I called around noon to see what the status was. Office said the technician was running late. I called again approximately 2 hours later and was told the technician was working on a job and we were next. I said i just want to make sure we were not forgotten. I was assured by the office "oh no need to worry, he will get to your home". He has like 6 jobs after yours". He NEVER arrived. My husband called after 5pm and they claimed our a/c unit had been completed! They said they will look into this and let us know. Waited another 1/2 hour and I got on the phone. I needed an answer ASAP. She did not have any answer. Basically repeating what i was saying. I stressed to her to get someone higher up to call us. As of the following day.....still NO call. I have been a Colonial Heating customer since 2011, they were hired to install anew furnace and air conditioner. Over the years, their service of this equipment has been acceptable. On 2/13/2023 I called asking for advice on resetting my Emerson Blue wireless thermostat wireless connection to the furnace control module. The thermostat wireless connection had failed as the thermostat battery power was low. I replaced the batteries, but the thermostat wireless connection was still indicating failure. I then followed the Emerson thermostat manual installation instructions for re-establishing the wireless connection to the furnace control module when simply replacing the thermostat batteries failed. This included removing the thermostat CTL wireless state and creating new CTL state on the thermostat, and then pushing the furnace control module connect button. The control module connect button blinked green indicating a connection attempt, and the thermostat in wireless setup mode was blinking the word "searching". I held the thermostat right next to the control module, but it would not connect. So I called Colonial Heating to ask advice - is there anything else I could try to establish the wireless connection before asking for a service call. The Colonial Heating phone person put me on hold to ask a technician. I was asked how old the thermostat was (7 years) and if I had held the thermostat next to the control module (yes ). Then I was told that I probably needed a new thermostat/ control module upon which I scheduled a service call. Note that I had to pay $149 up front before the service call could be scheduled. Imagine my surprise and dismay when all the service tech did was to power cycle the furnace to make it connect! Note that this was the very first (and only) task the Colonial Heating service tech performed. In other words, it was common knowledge that cycling the furnace power could easily restore the wireless connection. Why was that advice not given to me on the phone call? When I called Colonial Heating to complain, I was told that even though I was a long time customer, I should not expect to get technical help over the phone forever. Today, Jessie and Eric were here to service some of our appliances and I would give them 10 stars if I could! They were professional, courteous, knowledgeable and prompt. They fixed what was not working, ordered parts to be delivered to my home for those needed for their return and offered helpful suggestions on maintenance. If you have a DTE Protection Plan and have been disappointed with the service technicians sent to your home, you can actually request Colonial (South) if they serve your area. We had the supervisor Dan come out who did not actually look in the machine, but told us that based on the pictures, and the information we gave, there was prevously a fire in the machine, which we were not previously informed. Had we been informed about the extent of the damage in the machine, we would not have proceeded with the repair. The supervisor said they could fix the heating elements at an additional cost, and we had to pay extra for the parts. But at this point we decided to just get a new dryer. The supervisor informed us that we should get some of our money back due to the machine not being properly repaired. Once we spoke with the manager Eddie, he refused to reimburse any cost. We used the consumers plan (btw... not worth it. Put the money you're spending toward it into a savings plan and just use that if things come up instead of losing the money you're putting into it.) colonial came out. They've been out before and I wasn't happy but this time, they came to look at our AC that we knew had a leak of refrigerant because our friend is an hvac tech and recharged it for us in 2021. Colonial came out, said "I'm here for a service call not to fix it. Replacing this valve is a lengthy process." And then said "you have to call to get it repaired or can replace it. Call me if you decide to replace it." And was in and out in literally 15 mins. A service call... means servicing my unit. So I called consumers back and they told us colonial said it was not fixable. Come to find out, my plan doesn't cover anything toward replacement. So my 2400$ has gone down the drain (see beginning statement.) I asked for another company to come for a second opinion. They said they usually send the same company and if they still think it isn't fixable, there's nothing they can do. I said I do not want colonial back here. They sent another company and the guy was AMAZING! He was here for about an hour, recharged the refrigerant, and said he couldn't even find the leak but that it was SLIGHTLY low so there was one somewhere, but definitely no where outside. I will NEVER allow colonial near anything I own or to service anyone I know if I can help it. read more

This company deals in fraud and tactics very unbecoming to consumers. Colonial was send to my home by Consumer Energy to determine the nature of my failed furnace; within 30 minutes of being in my home, the owner Joshua Pennington showed my husband pictures of what was supposed to be a crack in my furnace. He supposedly had the technician who was with him to go up into my furnace to take pictures. Joshua, advised my husband he was disconnecting the furnace and tagging it because it could leak carbon monoxide. l Upon Joshua leaving my home he indicated someone from his company would contact us to discuss replacement options. A couple hours later I received a phone call from someone name Kevin indicating they could replace the furnace the next day and provide heat for $9100, he also provided several payment options help with the cost. The next day I contacted my insurance company who sent an HVAC inspector. After completely disassembling the furnace determine there was no crack in the furnace. I immediately called Colonial while the inspector was here, we were provided pictures of a furnace with crack which apparently was not our furnace. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY.....READ THE REVIEWS, APPARENTLY WERE NOT THE ONLY CONSUMERS THAT HAVE BEEN FRAUDED BY THIS COMPANY. This company is contracted with consumers and I hate it! They had had to come to our home a few times in 13 years and everytime we get a cocky repair guy who tracks snow, rain whatever into your home. Looking past that this guy must have xray vision because everytime he's like oh your going to need to replace the whole thing whatever appliance it happens to be before he even looked. Once I challenged him that it would be nice if he could look at the unit not just assume he get smart mouthed and looked but runs his mouth consistently as he REPAIRS the simple issue. Never cleans up after themselves but I want them out of my house fast so be it I guess. Made comments about this is why he would never buy a older home(which a gas line has nothing to do with our HISTORIC home). They go bad end of story. Last visit was to replace a flex gas like to my stove. Total distance is 10ft in line and they wanted almost $800.00 to repair it. Had it fixed with another company that's well known for $250.00. Rude, unprofessional, disrespectful, over price and dreadful to work with. Do NOT trust this company! A technician by the name of Jessie, came out to my home. The technician was in my home for less than 5 minutes. Without even touching my washing machine, he stated that the motor/transmission had gone bad & that was not covered by my DTE home protection plan. He lifted the washer & said that transmission oil was leaking. He said I'd need a new washer. I've spent over $600 on a new one, plus delivery. Another appliance repair company came to haul away the old washer. There was no oil under the washer. They even reached back out, after they checked the washer, & advised that the only issue was a belt, that needed to be replaced! That technician didn't even TRY to troubleshoot! He walked in & out! So I spent $600 for nothing! Pissed is an understatement! I called Colonial & they could care less! I've reported this to DTE & they are filing a vendor complaint as well! read more

If I could give zero stars I would. They were scheduled to come out between noon and 4. I waited, no call no show. They called at 4:09 to tell me they had 2 calls ahead of me, they were running late, then they hung up on me. I attempted to return the call with no answer. Then I called DTE (who scheduled the appointment) They told me I would get a call within the next few minutes. It was 35 minutes later when a call was returned. My service was rescheduled with a supervisor for the following morning 8-12 with a promise that there would be a call placed to notify me if they were going to be late. Noon came and went, no return call. When I called the company. I was put on speaker the entire office was making comments about me and the office staff (Sara) hung up on me. I was not allowed to speak with a manger and she cancelled my appointment. 9 hours of wasted time on a company that NEVER had any intention of showing up or fixing anything. read more

Awful service and sales, do not stand behind their product. Sold me an undersized boiler I used only in winter for heating 10 years ago and have had no less than 12 documented service calls and countless heatless nights. Besides being undersized found it was not ventilated properly. Had them come out prior to this winter for routine check up everything checked out fine. 2 months later was told unit was shot. Their recommendations replace with same unit, no discounts, no credits. I've just wasted to much time talking about them. Don't waste your money, shop around. read more

Call someone else. These guys are super shady and over charge every customer. I had a unit under warranty and was still charged for parts in a shady run-around way. Over $350 for a repair that parts should have been included with and the repairman was at my house less than 20-minutes. read more

My water heater went out on Tues Dec 8 and Colonial was sent out through DTE.. In was told they had to order parts and they we Would get it done Asap so I had to wait until the next day..Today Weds Dec 9th they sent out a guy that was NOT PREPARED to fix my water heater..how can you have a part of the parts and NOT HAVE the pipes to finish the job..now you have to come back again, on another day and I am another day WITHOUT HOT WATER.. I will never use them or recommend them for any heating or cooling work! read more
