Quintessential hometown diner with excellent food. Came for breakfast sat at the counter. I got two eggs with corned beef hash, and my girlfriend got two eggs with bacon. Hands down the bacon was amazing, super super crispy and the home fries were beautifully done. They had a crispy crust to them, and the inside was still very fluffy. Staff was extremely friendly! I stumbled upon this beaut of a place after picking up my sister from Raritan Bay Medical Center and having it be a closer location than others. From the outside, you would miss it easily between the paint store and the UPS store. Once you're walked in, you're automatically greeted with a smile and told to sit anywhere we would like. I immediately get the homie-diner vibes and absolutely felt comfortable. Menu is mixed with all your favorite diner foods like waffles, sandwiches, omelettes and etc. AND the best part is that it was so affordable! My sister order a "pork roll", egg and cheese sandwich for like $4.50 and I thought that it was going to be small nothing, but boy I was surprised! That shit was big and fully loaded!! Btw I don't use the term pork roll, I use Taylor ham. BUT OMG it was good. I ordered the Virginia ham entree, and I was surprised yet again on how big of a slab of ham they had given me. I think my entree was like $9-10. I can't remember but it was affordable. With our meals and ice coffee, my bill came out to 20 something. Like c'mon here it doesn't get better than Colonial! I have been going to the Colonial Restaurant in Fords, NJ for more years than I care to mention...I have been friends with 3 owners...this restaurant is my home away from home, the staff are the greatest and I consider them my second family...the food is excellent, always fresh and prepared to order...for the price, the family atmosphere and total experience you cannot go wrong....it is open until 3 Monday thru Saturday and until 2 on Sunday...they also have daily specials...stop in for an amazing experience. read more

Small place with decent food. Don't go there on a Sunday morning if you're really hungry. Typical diner food. I had the steak, eggs and home fries platter with wheat toast. It came up to about $12 and includes a free hot coffee or tea. No substituting the coffee or tea for a fountain beverage. I ordered some onions for my steak and that was an additional $.50 charge. The staff just seems too busy to be attentive- as the place was packed wall to wall. But they seem to have their regulars who apparently frequent this diner. I love this little diner! The serving size is generous, the food hearty and comfortable, the service warm and friendly, and all this for an amazing price. I especially love their omelettes, I even told my boyfriend that I'd marry him in a heartbeat if he'd make me breakfast like that every morning. A friend and I stopped at Colonial after reading prior customer reviews, which rated the restaurant 4 1/2 to 5 stars, so we were expecting a lot from them. First and foremost, our waitress was wonderful, courteous, friendly, sociable, and very pleasant and the service was really very good, however, when it comes to the food, improvement is necessary and I'll be specific. My friend ordered a regular egg dish with home fried potatoes and rye toast, which she was very happy with, whereas I ordered a $10.95 Colonial Wrap consisting of eggs, ham, mushrooms, and "American" cheese, along with home fried potatoes. The eggs and potatoes were nicely done, but things went downhill very quickly afterward. Tasteless mushrooms, hard to chew ham, also relatively tasteless, but worst of all, Cheez Whiz or an equivalent instead of American cheese, what a disappointment. Some effort should be added to making tastier ham and mushrooms, and above all, the advertised American cheese should be used and not a cheap substitute. I hope that the restaurant takes this review in the spirit in which it is intended, with a little more effort, this can be a very delicious sandwich, and if I noticed problems, you can be sure others do as well. Simply put, I'm trying to offer some constructive criticism as a help for your organization. read more

The service was good and the food was good. I just can't give them a rating higher than 3 stars since (for me) the place is in dire need of a renovation, it's really, REALLY old. This place beats out some of the bigger diners in the area. Small and cozy, it takes you back to when small luncheonettes like this were the place to eat. Breakfast is inexpensive and always a win-win here. The specials are always posted daily. I made the mistake of ordering the Irish Omelette with home fries. The omelette was already stuffed with potatoes so I didn't really need the extra carbs. Should have had fruit or something. Being diabetic, that was way too much starch. Been living on fords for a little over a year, and. I have yet to try this place. Luckily they were open today, (new years day) and let me tell you guys.. amazing. I ordered a porkroll egg and cheese with a side of porkroll and a wrap with chicken and bell peppers with fried and slaw with a pickle on the side. Super impressed. Ton of food, low prices, and I would totally reccomend! Also staff seemed really nice coming back in near future! read more

Me and my two co-workers have been stopping here for days a week in the morning for the last five years. It is never a disappointment and we know exactly what we're getting every day when we walk through the doors. I was visiting the area when I found This business. It is a family and wallet friendly restaurant. The selection was vast and they gave you a lot on your plate. Make sure you come hungry! The service was excellent and employees were sociable. I was even surprised at how good the coffee was, not weak at all. My only complaint would be that the pancakes could be a little more flavorful. read more

We went here bright and early at 6:45am on a Sunday morning and they already had customers. It was not straight-forward to find coming off the NJ Tpke (don't use outdated Google Maps) but our waitress was so friendly and pleasant and the food was "real" and well-priced that it was worth the detour. They make their own soups in house, and I highly recommend their cream of chicken on Monday's. Cheesesteaks, excellent breakfast specials, great portions... Very disappointed in the service with the hostess today, was not even able to sit down and have a typical great breakfast that Colonial Restaurant delivers. The system they use to takedown names when people are waiting for a table is antiquated and she skips over people and gives preference to people she knows as oppose to a first come first serve. Too bad for the waitress who lost out on a tip today because of her mistake because I am a very good tipper. The management needs to pay attention to what this hostess is doing and get someone else to take care of seating. read more
