I had dinner here a couple of weeks ago while in town remembering it from a previous trip about 2 years ago. My visit was on a nice weather Sunday early evening. Colt Grill is located on Whiskey Row and caddy corner from the Courthouse. It is easy to find and street parking is plentiful. Colt Grill has both indoor and outdoor uncovered seating which is so popular with the weather here. Inside it's a counter service restaurant with a bar that serves BBQ. I ordered the 1/2 smoked chicken platter that comes with slaw and cornbread for $17.50. I added the "meal deal" of 2 sides for $6 more and chose the sweet beans and Texas Toast because I wanted to try those side dishes in addition with what came with the meal. The meal was ready in less than 15 minutes. I immediately realized that I ordered too much food. Along with the 1/2 bird, the slaw and jalapeño cheese cornbread were full size sides. The beans and toast were too but then I did get to try them all so I wasn't complaining. The chicken looked perfect and was juicy and flavorful with a hint of smoke and a lot of taste. The cole slaw was cool and creamy and the big slice of cornbread moist and delicious. The beans had content in them with brisket and onions and looked great but were unfortunately dry. I would have been content to not order the two extra sides and save the $6. All in all the food was good tasting and affordable. I would have given a 4 score except for these negatives: First the dry beans. Second was for the flies buzzing around inside. Third was that they were out of some utensils and I had to use a child's fork to eat with. Evidently the dishwasher wasn't keeping up. Finally they have a sauce bar here with about 8 bbq sauces with descriptions to use which is neat. However, the 2 sauces that I wanted were out at the time. 3 of the 4 negatives were management related issues and may have not been the norm here however that is what I experienced. Colt Grill is a popular restaurant in Prescott that needs a little better organization. However, I would return on a future visit here. read more

I found my new home... and it's Colt Grill BBQ & Spirits. We just got a little cabin up here in Prescott, so I'm officially a part-time mountain man now--and Colt Grill bbq is my new go to place for grub. I ordered the Philly with garlic butter fries (because why wouldn't I), and my girl got the smoked turkey club it, did come with a full bottle of mayo in it so maybe ask for light mayo if you order that , but the mac & cheese could bring a grown man to tears. 3/4 slapped harder than expected Now, I did make a rookie mistake at the bar. I Ordered a regular 805 like a chump... $6 for 16oz. Then I see this glorious 22oz mug you can buy for $14--first fill is FREE, and refills are only $7 forever after as long as you bring your mug. You mean I could've had a beer and a souvenir? Say less. I'm now emotionally attached to this mug. The patio is the move--plenty of space, good vibes, and dogs welcome. I'll be back, and next time I'm bringing friends, family, and probably some strangers too. read more

I have seen this place for a while now, but we finally took the plunge on a quiet weekend morning. No events going on across the street, but there was still a consistent line coming out the door. The setup is efficient, as you grab a menu, place your order and pick up from the kitchen. They do have a full bar. Staff are pleasant and courteous, but how is the food? We ordered the sampler platter as well as the potato salad and beans. OMFG. Brisket, ribs, pulled pork, sliced turkey and for some reason a random slice of white bread. Meat was good, pulled pork was excellent as was brisket. Turkey was a tad dry, but thats normal. Ribs were in need of something, so we used some of the many sauces they provide. The sauces all kind of look and taste the same, with some subtle variance. All of the consistency of ketchup, but obv different flavours. Beer selection is outstanding and we got to try a few decent local beers. Their in house amber is quite lovely. The atmosphere is friendly and the outside area is great if you have a dog or just want to people watch, or even gaze at the courthouse plaza and its unique blend of conventional and out-there. We came in and sat at the bar so it was full service. The bartenders were super friendly and very attentive. We ordered drinks some wine and apps. I liked the fried pickles but they were cut a bit thick so felt hard when biting into them. They tasted fresh though so that's a plus. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the Colt Grill. They always seem to be smoking the meat when I'm there and it totally gets my mouth watering as soon as I walk in the door. The chicken salad was new for us, generous portion of meat and the smoked flavor really came through the whole salad. I got my usual half chicken, but decided to pair it with a nice flight of beers. It looks like they got new glasses since my last visit, these look like small ball, mason jars, so cute! The lady at the counter remembered me from my visit months ago, and everybody was super friendly and helpful. Cool spot on the corner with plenty of indoor seating and outdoor if it's not too cold. When you walk in grab a menu and order at the counter unless you're going to the bar. It's open seating once you order which is nice. I went to the bar and ordered a small brisket player with colt slaw and corn bread. They have a sauce bar with like 9 options. My favorite were the Texas tangy and habanero. Brisket was good as well as the slaw. The cornbread was hefty and the butter was absolutely delightful. I think happy hour is 3-5 but I didn't ask what the deals were. There's mostly street parking but I didn't have a problem finding a spot around five. read more

This is a must for anyone that comes to visit from out of town! They serve the best BBQ brisket sandwich and it's definitely one of my all time faves! I appreciate the outdoor patio because it is dog-friendly and is usually much quieter than the indoors. They do have live music, but not sure of the schedule. Do be aware that it can get loud! We were here for lunch on this particular day. Whether you eat outside or inside, you do have to work for your food! They have a counter where you place your food order and then a separate bar (full bar) where you stand in line again to place your alcohol drink orders. Lines do tend to move pretty quick for placing food orders, but can back up for drink orders. Once you get your food, there is a counter (both inside and out) where you can stock up on condiments, including a variety of bbq sauces. I really appreciate this part, because I'm so extra when it comes to sauces! Staff is friendly and very attentive, both indoors and out! Restaurant is always clean, including restrooms, and pato dining area is maintained clean despite the elements (weather can be harsh!). Oh my! I'm not a big fan of BBQ but the smells from this place were irresistible. I decided on a brisket sandwich that did not disappoint! Lots of meat and perfect in texture and flavor. This is the second time we've been by for lunch. I love that you seat yourself and that you order at the counter when you're ready. I have some dietary restrictions and it takes a minute to see what I can have. Here I don't feel pressured. It feels like an old timey lounge and the barbecue bar is fun and unique. I got the Filly salad with smoked chicken. It was fresh and delicious. The cranberry vinaigrette was yummy. My husband got the Filly Sandwich which is a barbecue take on a cheese steak. He loved it. The fries are crisp and seasoned well, the brisket is tender and flavorful. My son got the pulled pork sandwich with the cheesey jalapeño cornbread. The corn bread was moist and not spicy. I feel bad for saying these things, but when you're on vacation from out of town, you want a spot you can count on. I don't really recommend this place as one of those. We ordered 2 trays for $29 (approx)/ each consisting of a selection of meats, and then ordered a few sides. Out of our table of 5, only one person got one slice of brisket that wasn't tough. The ribs were like bricks. The turkey was moist, and the shredded pork was very tender and good. The sausage... that sausage-brat thing will haunt me forever. It was the WEIRDEST sausage I've ever eaten. No one at the table liked it. Upon slicing it open, the meat fell out of the (beautifully charred) casing like cookie crumbles or something... the meat just flooded out like you might pour a handful of pebbles out onto the ground... The flavor was odd, and the texture more odd. It's my most unique sausage experience since Venezuelan blood sausage, in the mountains north of Caracas. Anyway- That was the meat. The sides.. the baked beans were somewhat crunchy, but with decent flavor, and meat chunks. Not raw, but still- a little crunchy (no thanks). The slaw tasted like it just had sweetened mayo on it (not worth paying for). The potato salad was also pretty flavorless. I walked away with a memory of the taste being boiled potato and creamy cheese or something but no flavor, no salt or tanginess. The corn bread was good! The bbq sauces did NOT taste anything like bbq sauce, I was confused. I've been to TX bbqs, Nashville bbqs, NC bbqs, etc. and never have I tasted such a "reach". To call it bbq sauce was interesting to me. I just don't know where that type of bbq recipe hails from. I'm not an authority, I realize, but there was no depth or dynamic or flavor kick to the varieties of bbq. It perplexed me. Very one dimensional. Between us at the table, we have visited 50 states and 20 countries- so we have tried many different varieties of barbecued/smoked meat.... so it was kind of funny that the evening's favorite dish was the side of sweet potato fries #forthewin! They were great- not too thick. When they're thick they're crunchy in the middle. They also did not have some horrible batter on them (can't stand battered fries). M In conclusion: I love brisket. But if I go back to Colt's for some reason, I would stick with the shredded pork, cornbread, and sweet potato fries, no exception. Just to be safe. (I don't even like pork, but it was good). Anyway- that's my feedback for anyone who has limited time or funds. Maybe see what else is around first. I'm giving it 4 stars because the flavor of the meat (not tenderness) was good, clean bathrooms, acceptable service, and timeliness were all on point. We had a great time as a family. read more

Went here for lunch and drinks after an 8 mile hike. The drinks are amazing. Started with Ol' Smokey as it has knob creek smoked maple whiskey. Then had Colt Fashioned for the smoked oranges. Basically, the food was delicious but the time it takes to get food and drinks here might outweigh the benefit of the good food. It took over an hour to get food and then head over to the bar to get just two drinks. You can't get both at the same time and you have to order food at the counter first before finding a seat. They seemed to have too thinly staffed the place, so it may not be an issue next time. I got the jalapeño popper burger and it was amazing! I devoured it so quickly that I didn't get a good picture. This place was great for lunch after walking around town and shopping! Very easy access from the center of town. They had outdoor seating and we were able to get a table right away. This was at 12 on a Saturday. I got the 6 baby back ribs (16.50) and my husband got the brisket (15.90). I am a rib snob and actually really loved these! The BBQ sauce had the perfect kick! This is is amazing. It has great reasonably priced barbecue in the area. They have about six smokers out front that you can see going all day. We ordered the meat sampler platter, which came with a great variety meat and very delicious. They have a barbecue sauce bar to where you can pick anywhere from hot to my barbecue sauce, sweet and tangy you name it they got it. It's really good. We sat in the bar area the bar waitress really good. always stopped by and make sure we had enough food and everything napkins water everything like that. The ambience was good. The turkey sausage was good and tasted like a meatball which I liked; the pulled pork was a little too much on the greasy side for me, but I liked that it wasn't too fatty; I wasn't a fan of the smoked turkey. The flavor was good but consistency was too thick and tough; the baby back ribs were also tough and didn't fall off the bone; I prefer the lean slices of brisket (even though they are drier) over the fatty ones as the fat runs throughout the meat and on the sides. It pulls apart like butter, but if you're not into gristle, it may be more work than it's worth. The jalapeño cornbread was good, but dry so needs that butter it comes with. I liked the crispiness of the edges. My fave bbq sauce is the desert heat one. It has a light kick that isn't too overpowering. read more

The aroma lead us to Colts and we are sooo glad it did. This is a walk up and order restaurant which we didn't mind. However, once the line starts to form out the door and down the sidewalk, it's a little hard to get back inside to pick up your food if you're sitting outside. But don't let that stop you from trying Colts. The food is amazing! I'm originally from the mid-west and I've had some of the best BBQ in the country and Colts is up there! We had the brisket platter half lean and half rich, which was a good combination of both, excellent. Friends had the brisket and chicken tacos. They also said those were excellent as well. One star because you can sit outside with the dog on the patio. Here's the dirt. We drove by this place multiple times as we come to Prescott a few times a year. I am not a meat eater however, my husband is. Since we had our golden retriever it seemed like a cool place to take her and I was happy to eat off the side menu. It is something that vegetarians are used to doing. For starters, we sat outside with the dog for a few minutes, looked around and had no idea we needed to head inside to order food. There was nothing on the tables. We had to ask one of the staff clearing the tables what the process was. You have to order inside at the register. No problem my husband ordered his food. I ordered mine and I attempted to order my teen a grilled cheese sandwich and fries. How old is he? They asked me. He's a teen. Oh we are sorry he can't have a grilled cheese sandwich if he is under 12. I said well he's a vegetarian. Could you please make an exception? Emphatically they said no. I spoke to the manager. She emphatically said no also, I told her that is such a weird hill to stand on when it's on your menu , but whatever.... WEIRD. We weren't trying to skirt the full menu. He just didn't want anything off of it. That said, I think the service went downhill from there as I must've upset them. The lady handed me my soda cup, but didn't want to tell me where to fill it.... We had no napkins at our table no knife to cut meat. You have to go inside to get ketchup, you have to go inside to get ranch. You have to go inside to get barbecue sauce. You have to go inside to get refill. It's just meh. I ordered smoked macaroni and cheese (dry) , and butter garlic fries (weird) which....you can see my pictures and be the judge for yourself. Although this is no fancy place, with no frills, an open kitchen counter pick-up set up, wood tables - not so comfortable, but if you're looking for great, down home, tasty smoked barbecue... there's a strong chance your gonna get it here. We got the baby back ribs, garlic fries and smoked Mac and cheese. They were all amazing. My wife got a prickly pear lemon drop 10/10 recommend. I got a Big Blue Van blonde also really good. Just be warned though the whole ordering process is different and I thought a little cumbersome. You find a table, go to one counter to order food. Go to the bar to order drinks. Was a little concerned at some of the other reviews, but let me assure you those folks clearly do not know bbq. I have lived in Texas, been to a lot of places and have been running my own smoker for several years so I'm a little more picky than most. This place is legit! I had the baby back ribs and they were spot on. Perfect bite not yet falling off the bone, exactly as they should be. The potato salad is outstanding and unlike most places, it is really good.
