Great tasting BBQ! Try the Texas Twinkie! Lilly was an AMAZING bartender/server! Busy Saturday but we were seated quickly!

Came here with friends and shared a sampler plate that turned out amazing! We got to taste a few dishes from that plate alone and the flavors were great! I loved the smoked turkey, the sausage was very juicy and flavorful and the pulled pork.. wow!! They had a good selection of different barbecue sauces with different heat levels as well for you to choose from. We sat right by the kitchen window, so we got to see everything coming out of the kitchen. Everything looked so freaking good. Even the salad was piled high with smoked protein. And apparently they have these nachos that look so freaking good too. Definitely coming back here. It was a cute little ambience, the staff was very friendly and got us seated pretty quickly when we got there. We did come on a weekend so it was pretty crowded, but that didn't stop them from providing great service.. will definitely come back to try the other dishes next time we're in town. read more

We brought some visitors from Europe into town during the Labor Day arts show in downtown Prescott. We decided to go to Docs, which has been good in the past. We got there at 11am and the place was already almost full, which was odd, as they open at 11. The manager/owner greeted us and took us to our table which was an outside table and what I can only describe as the back of beyond, as far as possible from kitchen and close to Montezuma Street. Luckily the misters were working and there was shade. We were very thirsty for water and when the server came we asked for water and then beer. We waited 15 minutes for the water and by then I had to go back into the restaurant to see what was going on. The manager brought out our water. After another 5 minutes and no beer, I went back in again and saw our server placing our order. 20 minutes AFTER we placed it. My wife prefers to have a beer and then enjoy the food. However, with the delay, it became increasingly apparent that the window to enjoy the beer was rapidly closing. As the beer finally came out, so did the food. That is how long it took. The beer was decent, I had the Docs Blonde and my wife had a blue moon. I ordered a burger with brisket and paired it with coleslaw. It was ordered medium rare and was cooked to perfection. Fantastic burger. My wife ordered caesar salad but got Cobb Salad and the server was gone before any comments could be made. Not ideal. My wife and her aunt basically nibbled at their salads but were clearly not impressed. The tomatoes were off. The salad was presented in a huge square plate with not much depth, so managing the salad becomes a chore. Once, again, my burger was decent. It was in a metal tray because, why not. The manager came by later and explained there was some internet issue which held up the drinks, but it seems like it would make sense just to place the order at the bar when they go in. But what do I know. The manager said he would "take care" of the drinks, which implied a comp. When the server came with the bill, he had a credit card hand unit and we said we would pay in cash. He did adapt, but we never saw a breakdown of the bill, so it was impossible to know if the beers were taken off. I doubt it. Oh and when we paid in cash, he noticed the European accent and when we gave him the money, he said, without even trying to hide it. "Thats not how we do it in America". Basically there was no way he was getting a tip due to all the issues. He did not acknowledge any of it and even started making sarcastic comments to the table next door. After the server left, the customer walked over to our table and made some very uncomplimentary comments about the server. They also left their leftovers. Take from that what you will. read more

I was in town for the Arizona Cowboy Poets Gathering and came downtown to this great bbq place for dinner. I had the Pig Nose Kate (a take on Doc Holliday's girlfriend, Big Nose Kate). It was great, and so much food. Super friendly and helpful bartender, Rye (perfect name for a bartender). In addition to great food, as the name implies of they have a huge selection of both common and special hard yo find whiskies. And super dog friendly on their patio. Patio also has a mister from the ceiling to keep you and your canine companion on those hot Arizona evenings. read more

My wife and I spent the day in Prescott to escape the Phoenix heat. We decided to have barbecue and selected Doc's primarily due to the ambience and spaciousness compared with another BBQ place that was even rated higher. We secured a table quickly and the hostess and waitress were friendly. I ordered a glass of wine but they were out of it and requested my second choice which was very nice. We decided to share the special Dino Rib plate and it was delicious and plentiful. They only prepare this dish on Friday and Saturday so we were fortunate to be here on a Saturday! The two sides we selected were the sweet potato fries and baked beans and both were tasty and generous in amount. The manager came to the table to check on us and was very engaged with customers which I believe is essential in a good restaurant. This is an attractive restaurant on Whiskey Row with a large inviting outdoor patio with misting sprayers along with a full bar and indoor seating. I ordered the 1/2 chicken platter for $20 that came with the bone in chicken, some tortillas and one side dish from which I chose the cowboy beans. The food arrived less than 15 minutes later. Of the 4 sauces on the table I liked Doc's Sauce the best. The chicken and beans were good tasting (3.5) and the price was reasonable. My gripe was that my waitress disappeared. No drink refills or checking in. Fortunately, a drink machine was nearby and I refilled my own. After asking other employees about where she was and with no response, I went up to the counter to pay and was told my waitress would take care of that. Finally she appeared at the table thinking I had skipped paying. I paid and left. The food was ok but the service poor. Also there were flies buzzing around inside. read more

Decided to take a day trip out of the heat from phoenix to Prescott !! We stopped to try the docs BBQ and it was okay . Let me just say we were extremely hungry. I got the turkey sandwich and it was good but I had asked for no bacon it was easy to peel off none the less. It just fell apart bite after bite which just sucks. My friend got pulled pork sandwich and he said 3/5 the pork was a bit dry. We both got Fries and they were a bit bland I will say. Lastly got the buffalo chicken dip and it was good till it wasn't kinda ...they like put a sauce on top of cream cheese ...it was kinda odd . Again was very hungry so was good till it wasn't lol ... We hesitated, but so glad we changed our minds! The service was fantastic for such a busy place. We opted to sit indoors, but loved how they remodeled the great outdoors. They have an amazing bar and beautiful wine barrel tables on the patio and though the misters were on, we sat inside. Next time it will be outside, because the restaurant was a bit warm where we were sitting. Anyway, food was very good. My husband ordered the pulled-pork sandwich and it comes with coleslaw (in the sandwich) and one side. He got the Mac-n-cheese, which he said was very good, but honestly? It's not something I'd ever order, because it looked like a bowl of soup. Just why? The sandwich though, was huge and packed with a lot of meat. My husband loved it! Our friends (and the reason we were in the beautiful and historic downtown) order the Six Shooter and shared it. They really enjoyed the BBQ (brisket, ribs, turkey, and a sausage) and I think we all loved the coleslaw! They did order the ranch-style beans, but unfortunately they were out (Tuesday early afternoon???) and ended up with sweet beans, which they did not love. They definitely had a whole lot of cumin going on, because I could smell it across the table! As for me, I got the Double Barrel Shotgun and it came with brisket, St Louis style ribs and a side. Thank God I got the coleslaw! The ribs were delicious and I like the fact that they have a variety of BBQ sauces on the table. I had the spicy habanero and it was perfect! The brisket was tasty, but I enjoyed the ribs so much more. Like I said, it was our first time trying out this fairly new establishment (it took the place of the iconic--now infamous Colt Grill) and we most certainly will be going back. We came here last year when it was called Colts BBQ. We thought it was very, very good then but they've leveled up since new ownership. The barbecue is amazing. The brisket is to die for and they now are a full service restaurant with servers waiting on your table. Previously, you had to order the counter go find a table pick up your order from a counter and get drinks from the bar yourself. So much better now! We went to Doc's BBQ & Whiskey on a weeknight while visiting Prescott. They were able to accommodate our large party of 13 with a big table on the patio. I ordered a plate with ribs and brisket. The ribs were alright while the brisket was good. The beans were really good. Another member of our party tried the potato salad and loved it. My husband ordered the brisket burger and in hindsight he would have asked for lettuce, tomato, and onion as it only comes with a patty, cheese, and a couple slices of brisket. We tried the Texas Twinkiez and they were alright, we found them to be pretty oily. I tried the Gold Fever cocktail and it was booze forward and very good. Cool place right off the square. Spacious, clean and recently renovated . . . clean restrooms a big plus. They have a neat bar that extends into the sidewalk out front. Walk right up, grab a stool and have a drink. It's large and spacious, plus there is a second one (bar) inside. We sat at the bar inside and shared The Six Shooter which has an assortment of meats, included a side and TexAZ toast. The meats were more than enough for the two of us . . . brisket, pulled pork, turkey and sausage. Had the Texas Twinkies for an appetizer which may very well be the best item on the menu. Service was good and attentive. We'll definitely return here the next time we're in Prescott. read more

My wife and I had a terrible first-time experience yesterday at Doc's BBQ, which was especially disappointing seeing we were there to celebrate an anniversary. We arrived around 5:30 p.m. and were seated inside, directly across from the kitchen/service counter. After waiting about 10 minutes, a visibly rushed waitress came over and introduced herself in a very loud manner before requesting our drink order. When I asked about the pricing of the IPA beers listed on the menu, she became irritated because I had not specified which of the two IPAs I was referring to. Rather than clarifying politely, her tone was unnecessarily loud and dismissive. We decided to order two House Merlots instead. She then asked us, "16 or 23?"--which understandably confused us. She walked away, placed the order, and returned with water. When I asked what she had meant by "16 or 23," she loudly explained that she had been referring to the size of the Michelob Light we had supposedly ordered. When I reminded her that we had ordered the House Merlot, her response was particularly upsetting. She loudly and rudely attributed the misunderstanding to our "heavy accent" (not true), attributed her loud voice to having to speak over everyone else then walked away in a huff. At that point, what was supposed to be a pleasant and celebratory evening had completely soured. We felt unwelcome, screamed at and disrespected, so we simply got up and left. That is particularly unfortunate because we had been impressed by the improvements Doc's BBQ had made, especially the attractive covered patio and outdoor bar, and we genuinely looked forward to trying it out. Sadly, a restaurant can invest in a beautiful setting, but the way guests are treated ultimately determines the experience. Based on our first--and unfortunately very disappointing--visit, we will not be returning. read more

I stumbled upon Doc's during a day trip up to the Prescott area and immediately was interested by the aesthetic of the building, which is both sleek and vintage at the same time. It was a weekday in the afternoon during a bout of cold weather so there weren't too many other guests at the time. The service was incredible, with our server being incredibly attentive and friendly for the duration of our meal. However, it was the food that absolutely stole the show! I tried the BBQ Nachos with Smoked Brisket and they were absolutely incredible. The plate was huge and I barely even finished half of it due to how much there was, so the price was well worth it. The brisket was absolutely perfect and the flavors all went together so well. I would consider planning another day trip to the area just to try these again so make sure you stop by! read more

This was our first visit here and we were definitely impressed. Most important thing we looked for was a PUP-FRIENDLY place to eat, and stumbled upon this spot. We were seated right away, which was really sweet. They have a nice sized outdoor patio area with tons of shade. They also bring out water bowls for your fur babies. Our server "The Duke of Earl" (Earl) was Awesome! Really cool dude. He had great recommendations on drinks and food, and the choices did not disappoint. We had a brisket burger, the jalapeño cream cheeseburger, two sides of mac & cheese, Texas toast, and an order of Texas Twinkies. We were seated at Table 7 around 6:30-7:00 PM last night (Saturday 5/17) during a very busy evening in Prescott. I understand that the city had several events going on and the restaurant was packed, but that doesn't excuse poor service. Our waitress was rude and had a noticeably sassy attitude throughout the meal. She didn't know what a Moscow mule was (that's a pretty basic drink). The service was extremely slow, and our food took nearly an hour to arrive after we placed our order. To make matters worse, we were only informed about 15 minutes before the food came out that they had run out of brisket. The food was decent, but the overall experience was disappointing because of the long wait and unfriendly service. This is a popular restaurant, and with that comes the expectation of professional and courteous customer service. Do better. read more

Stopped in here on a recent business trip. Was in town visiting family while on a bit of a break from business. First of all, as a Native Texan I have to hit the local BBQ joint any time I see one. And this place looked the part right off the bat. The decor is well done, it gives off a classic BBQ vibe from the moment you walk by on the curb. They had a grill set up on the patio out front, so the smells were drawing me in from blocks away. The massive smokers alongside the building were quite impressive. I started with a Smoked Texaz Twinkie, because again, Native Texan, and you had me at brisket stuffed jalapeno. It was great, plenty of brisket and cheese inside a massive jalapeno that was not overly hot for the sake of being hot, but had just the right amount of heat to let you know you were eating a jalapeno. I recommend giving it a squirt of sauce to add even more flavor to this already awesome starter. From there I did the Six Shooter, because it's a great sampler of brisket, ribs, puller pork, turkey and I went with the jalapeno cheese link. As you can see, I like the spicy! Everything was great, the flavors were on point, absolutely killin it here. As for the BBQ sauces, I really liked the sweet heat, but that's a personal thing. The house sauce is pretty good, but I enjoy the spice. And my wife preferred the tangy one because she likes that more vinegar based tang and that one was a bit zippier. I did not try the habanero one because I kind of feel that habaneros are a trendy thing just for the sake of being hot and they don't bring much actual flavor to the table, so I tend to skip anything habanero based. I like heat, but it also needs to have flavor. Your mileage may vary. This place is doing a great job of producing some really awesome Texas based BBQ. The flavors are great, bold, and interesting. The place looks the part and they are serving up some delicious food. The next time I find myself in Prescott, I'll be sure to swing back by again. read more

In Prescott for the weekend and stopped at Docs with my wife for some good old fashioned bbq and let me tell you, it did not disappoint! I got the plate with the burnt ends, ribs, and pulled pork. My wife got the western cheeseburger, she loved it! Our server, Sydney, was awesome! Very nice. The only thing I will say...the bbq sauce itself was not great. 4 options available, none of them hit the spot. House BBQ too sweet, others too watery. The burger meat tasted like steak seasoned perfectly. The fries were seasoned well and paired up nicely with their bbq sauce. Good gosh there was a lot of fries. The 4 BBQ sauces were all very unique . I loved the House, my husband liked the Hot Habanero. They also had AZ Tangy and Sweet heat all were very good and made there. Our waitress was so nice she saw my husband's phone and commented on our husky's. She too has a couple of dogs one being crazy like ours. Great experience we will definitely be back next time we're in town and we already told our family about this place.They all do lots of day trips and love BBQ. We visited Doc's BBQ & Whiskey shortly after they opened in Prescott, Arizona! Overall an impressive establishment, I wish I lived closer. Everything was clean and well put together with a modern BBQ vibe. All the staff were very friendly and personable. The restaurant is situated along Prescott's Historic "Whiskey Row" and Doc brings the goods. I started with their Old Fashioned and it was very tasty. The brisket here is outstanding. I ordered the moist cut and it was tender, beefy, and richly marbled with a distinct smoke ring. I had high hopes for their "Smoked Mac & Cheese" but it wound up tasting pretty pedestrian. Seemed to be laden with processed cheese. We had fun sampling all of their delicious BBQ sauce choices that are nestled in a caddy at the table. Be warned however that one of the five is actually ketchup! I will definitely visit this place again the next time I'm in Prescott. read more

Okay, so I finally got up to the square to try the new bbq place in town. There's good and bad - and of course this is just my humble opinion - but over all, not too shabby. Let me lay it all out for you. And, to keep it accurate, I would probably give this place 3.8 stars if Yelp would allow that, and if I wanted to be harsh, but 4 stars will do just fine for this experience. First impressions... really cool place! The outdoor bar area, the outdoor grill to cater to the folks coming up to visit - very smart to capitalize on the foot traffic and provide a great deal to those enjoying the art shows on the square. Seriously, great atmosphere! Unfortunately, I think this place is more about the atmosphere and less about the bbq - and I went for the bbq for sure. But it's not as bad as it sounds. The food itself, as far as execution and doneness, everything was cooked perfectly. The brisket was juicy, the ribs had that perfect bite that came right off the bone without falling off - seriously, the ribs were so well done, the bone was perfectly clean after all was said and done. The sausage was juicy on the inside and had a great snap on the skin. The only issue I had with the cooking is my son's burger was well done and he ordered medium - but we've told him time and again you gotta order medium-rare if you want medium from most places. Plus. He orders a burger at a bbq joint - what's that about . Seriously though, the issue with the food was definitely not the ability of the pit masters to cook it... it was the seasoning. Unfortunately, every single bite was lacking seasoning. I was definitely missing that salty bite of brisket that comes from the bark and the fat soaking up all that saltiness during the long smoke. It just wasn't there, and it was with each piece of meat. Even the coleslaw was lacking dressing; was more like a nice refreshing cabbage salad; couldn't tell if it was vinegar based or mayo based, just didn't have enough dressing to judge it. If it wasn't for the lack of seasoning, probably would've given at least 4.5 - maybe even 5 stars. The variety of sauce was good, but the house sauce was a little sweet for my taste. The Arizona Tangy and the Sweet & Spicy were the best, hands down. The service was good, especially for how busy they were - we were well taken care of. I might have to go back and have a whiskey at one of the bars, because I think this might be where this establishment focuses their attention, because like I said, the place was jumping and really fun to be at, and the bars looked amazing! Final assessment, my family and I would go back, just based on the pit masters' ability to cook the meat, and the great atmosphere. The person I was with got a Whisky old fashioned and there wasn't much and more ice cube than drink. The servers and staff were very nice though. Outside seating is LOADED with flies, so better to sit inside. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and it was served cold, so ask them to heat it up. The meat was bland with no BBQ flavor whatsoever. They have disgusting dried BBQ sauce bottle containers on the table that I was reluctant to use but did, just to add some kind of flavor to the meat. Service was very basic. Server took the order, Food Runner brought the food, Server disappeared and did not return to see if everything was OK or if we needed anything else, then Server finally returned at the end of the meal to present the check. Ambiance: Did I mention all the flies? Because they were inside also, just not swarms like outside dining. This place needs some professional help. read more

I believe this is Prescott's best BBQ. Talking with the manager, she explained the new direction and menu with a new pit master. The flavor profile was on point with the starters. Having the Twinkie's and burnt ends pork belly was very good though the burnt ends was a tough chew.
