The now Star Theater in Old Town/Chinatown, owned by the Dante empire, was a decrepit abandoned burlesque built in 1912 before it was bought by a local film director who built a penthouse condo on the corner above the 1890 abandoned grocery at the corner of 5th and Couch. Dekum Street Theater opened hosting the Portland Dance Film Festival. The building has a small ticket booth at the street. Inside is an architecturally designed lobby. There are modern bathrooms. The theater has raked padded theater seating holding about 90. For the first event an additional about 40 sat in folding chairs on the floor. All in, occupancy is about 170. Sight lines are good. It has been a five year labor of love. The theater space has the 1911 raw concrete walls and the ceiling framing is raw exposed wood. Think industrial rustic baroque. The sound system was clear, the space would work for movies or musical events. All the proper seismic, sprinklers, and emergency exit work has been done. The special thing is an about 20 foot by 20 foot sprung wood floor with or without linoleum. Those floors are used by dancers performing or rehearsing from modern to ballet. It is safer for our body joints. There are probably under two handfuls of them in Portland. We hope to see dance performances there. It is in a neighborhood with an organic mix of food and drink, and they will add their own in the front space. It is wheelchair accessible. There is street parking. This little theater has been lovingly brought back to life, it has a unique vintage vibe, keep an eye out on their socials for events and activities!

I'm so glad I saw an ad on Facebook and decided to take the ride out to St. George Orthodox Church where this festival is held. I met the most wonderful people, had tons of fun, and will come back every year for this annual event. Just a short drive from Portland, there is ample parking in their lot and on the street. The driveway is lined with different tents containing food from local restaurants, like Nicholas, henna painting, some jewelry, cookies and pastries, and an entire area dedicated to games for the children. Inside the church was a stage where the traditional dancing took place at a few scheduled times. There were cookies and pastries available in packages or you could buy individual pieces. I bought baklava, which was delicious - sweet, but not too sweet - and worth the trip out there! Also bought date cookies that were so good with tea. I had planned on buying a spinach pie and meat pie to bring home to eat, but when the gentleman plated the meat pie, fresh from the oven, I decided to eat it there. When I came upon an outdoor area with tables, a group welcomed me, then insisted I join them. Within minutes I was part of the conversation and laughter. Next thing I knew, 3 hours passed! It was like being with family. Amazing. We exchanged numbers and have already gotten together for a movie, HH, and this weekend we are meeting at the Arab Festival at Oak Park and a Labor Day BBQ. Seriously. Crazy. Never would have guessed that my detour to the 42nd Annual Middle Eastern Festival would have resulted in two new beautiful friendships. I swear, I feel like they adopted me!

My review is based on being a performer and a viewer over many years. It's not a big problem until the Artist is doing a ballet or a low volume song, the sound engineer seems to do the best job they can, but the jumbo 777 jets will win every time. At the last festival 2022, I was lucky enough to provide percussion to the Grammy Award winner Latin Jazz Legend, Poncho Sanchez and his band. The Band was fire that night and Poncho and band couldn't be sweeter. The festival's crew were very helpful and kind, and they worked their butts off the whole weekend. The food - well this is where I think there is room for improvement in terms of variety and volume. For example they had a ice-cream vender that had way overpriced ice cream cones for 8 bucks a scoop and only offered vanilla or chocolate. Love to see more Mexican food personally. All & All - As a performer the crew is very professional and hard working, as an audience the food and drink options need some help. The parking is good and plenty of restaurants within 1-3 blocks away if you wanted to eat after or before the show. Pro Tip - Go early, bring something warm to wear, and eat outside the event and try sitting on the east-side of the stage unless you want to hear the porta-potty doors slamming shut every 5 seconds.

The wine booths were few and far between unless you had VIP seating. The selections were few. Only one of 3 booths even carried a dry white wine. And $30.00 to get in, I found to be quite high. Portland doesn't even charge that much. I am curious to find out what the $30.00 bought...sitting behind a tall chair with the smallest glass of wine I have ever bought? We won't be back.

Galleries that pepper the street open their doors and spill out in to the street, and there is live music at the Mayor's Corner. It's a combination of local art, culture, and community for all to enjoy! It was a beautiful blue sky day and I enjoyed a leisurely stroll up one side of the street, then down the other, making sure to check out all the booths. Unfortunately, I left my camera in the car, so there no pics, just words for this review. Lots of handmade jewelry - at least 8 booths - showcasing sterling silver and other metals, turquoise, gem stones, and wire work. I'm a sucker for long dangly earrings and anything with a blue stone, especially Larimer, so of course I had to buy a pair that hit all the marks. Several photographers, water color, acrylic, and oil artists with pieces reflecting the magnificent Columbia Gorge region were displaying their work. One photographer, Patrick Campbell, had greeting cards and puzzles, in addition to his photography on metal. As soon as I saw the puzzle with a Rowena Crest sunset during wild flower bloom, I bought it before anyone else saw it! That's how art works, it speaks to you and immediately makes a connection. Other artists and crafters included felted images that were incredibly detailed, unique and beautiful. Crocheted clothing, handbags, hats and scarves. Beautiful hand carved wooden bowls, boards and platters that showed off the grain in the wood. Lovely earthenware and ceramic mugs and vessels. Goat milk soaps and lotions. And more! There are several restaurants on both sides of the street plus home decor stores, antique shops and other stores. It's a fun way to spend a few hours. Parking was easy - park either behind the stores in the large parking lot or take the free Sasquatch Shuttle. The shuttle runs a continuous loop with several pick up stops, the Columbia Gorge Outlet one block away is the easiest.
