The first thing you need to know is that the Columbus Fish Market is NOT a fish market. It is an upper middle class seafood restaurant. It has all the trappings of a country club restaurant which is to say, comfort reigns here at a slightly elevated price. I can't really complain, our server was sweet and attentive. The manager checked on us. The food was tasty, the drinks were very good. I don't know it was just... nothing special. Let's put it this way, a few weeks ago I was in Ocean City, MD and we stopped at a crab shack where they put paper on the table and we ate like Neanderthals who just discovered that crabs were edible. We made the kind of mess that only long married couples with kids can make. Crab shells and shrimp tails were flying. That meal lives rent free in my brain. Damn it was good, but I digress. See there are places you take family, and places you take a first date. The crab shack is for family, The Columbus Fish Market (still not a fish market) is where you take a first date assuming she is not allergic to seafood. The ambiance just lacks character and charm in an inoffensive way. As Shakespeare once wrote, "nothing is either good nor bad, but thinking makes it so" and I am not sure even thinking can move the needle on this place. Did I mention it is not a fish market? Ok, ok, the food. Yes, I got the Cajun swordfish and a little gem side salad. That followed the spicy crispy shrimp appetizer. All were very good. I recommend the shrimp if you end up here. The Cajun swordfish was well seasoned and only ever-so-slightly overdone. It was good, to be sure but a minute too far. The sear was great though, crisp and flavorful. The little gem salad was a great compliment to the main. I love a good salad. I also tried my daughter's Caesar salad and my wife's tomato, bacon, Bibb wedge salad. Skip the Caesar and get one of the others, especially if you like a good Caesar. Overall the food was very good and I should probably give this place four stars. I dont know, I'm feeling salty. The resturant is clean and I'm a sucker for subway tile. First time in Ohio, so I was already taking a chance here. As for service, our waiter Aiden was amazing. But I have to be honest, I wouldn't come back here. It felt like it is a red lobster trying to be upscale. To play devil's advocate a bit, they do in fact have fresh fish in ice on display. I ordered the walleye and it wasn't seasoned, breaded poorly, the green beans didn't give their vibrant green as fresh ones normally do. The mashed potatoes were solid and the "blue crab slaw" was a dollop of sodium. Holding out for better results in other Ohio restaurants. Not a fan of the two-seater tables against the wall but I do understand effective use of space in the dining area on a busy evening. We love their fish and chips and tartar sauce on a regular day but this evening we indulged in their special dinner. We started with calamari due to not recalling if we ever had it. I'm a stickler for good calamari and this was good, and now in the top 3 of my favorite. Light and crispy, the tentacles were not difficult to ingest. Then I ordered the house salad and my beau ordered the butternut squash soup. Loved the dates in my salad and the poppy seed dressing was just sweet and tangy enough for my palate. His butternut squash soup was silky and very tasteful of butternut and the temperature stayed warm throughout eating it. For our entrees I ordered the crab cake and shrimp with corn and mashed potatoes. Prepared Maryland styled, the crab cake was very tasty. You can always tell when shrimp is fresh and cooked perfect when you can pull the tails off without issue. A little more effort than usually needed was a must to do this, and the shrimp was slightly overcooked for me. The potatoes were okay and the corn was good. His Shanghai Seafood Sampler was delicious. I know he loved the green onions on it. The teriyaki styled sauce over steamed rice made this super indulgent. My mouth is watering now while I type this. Very tasty! Our dessert choices were a type of cheesecake (which we don't ever go for), a creme brulee with berries (an overrated item in our opinion) and the key lime pie, which we delightfully enjoyed. Perfectly tart and sweet with copious crust to enjoy. The vanilla lime drizzle and whipped cream on top balanced the dessert adequately. Having never visited the Columbus Fish Market before, it was a nice change of pace for me and my friends I also wanted to get some delicious drinks and chat it up. The atmosphere was nice and we decided to hang out at the bar where the bartender was extremely busy. They seemed short-staffed as the GM hopped in to help with the orders. Both had great attitudes about it and we were fine waiting a bit while they helped other folks. I got a couple of the Moscato White Sangrias and a shareable of their Crispy Calamari which had chili soy dipping sauce, green beans, and red bell peppers. I haven't been to Columbus Fish Market in well over a decade. With friends, I recently gave it another shot on a Sunday late afternoon. Our server was polite and kept my water glass full -- thumbs up! The bread was good. The meatball appetizer could have used salt but tasted fine. For more than $5 per meatball, though, a little pricey. The French Sangria was decent, but it ... didn't have wine? It had cognac, but no wine? A bit odd. Caesar salad was eh. A *lot* of dressing on it. The $11 iceberg lettuce had brown spots. Maybe that's why the dressing was liberally applied. It felt like they were clearing out the fridge of the last bit of lettuce clinging for dear life before a new shipment arrived. I played the role of obedient customer and ate it, though. Then came the saddest entre I could imagine. It was billed as a broiled seafood platter with salmon, shrimp, and scallops. Alliteration -- I love it! The salmon? Maybe a 3oz strip, where the thin part of the piece was basically black and the rest had very little color. The scallops? I counted 11 dime-sized pale scallops huddling together on one side of the plate. The shrimp? Unquestionably tough through-and-through. Those poor shrimp were unalived twice -- first when they were caught, and again when they were cooked to oblivion. A large dollop of potato mash accompanied the meal, and a few carrot slivers and broccoli florets for the veg. Honestly, the plate looked sad. I'm generally too nice to send food back, so I soldiered through it. I had to apply salt to the meal because the kitchen obviously hadn't. Again, those poor shrimp -- in life, they had *families*, and yet they gave themselves up only to receive this deplorable treatment. Absolutely awful and beyond tough. I can only imagine the whole plate was sat under a heat lamp and forgotten for a good 15 minutes before being served. The worst part about this "entree" was its US$41 price tag. I really should have sent it back and asked for a different meal. It's my fault for choking it all down. The thought of those poor shrimp suffering even more unimaginable indignity at the bottom of a garbage bag motivated me to the end. The key lime pie for dessert was fine. Overall, two stars = "Could've been better", so there it is. Maybe more stars had I chosen a "correct" entre. I keep thinking of Indy meeting the Grail Knight and Donovan drinking from the wrong cup earning him the rebuke of "he chose ... poorly". Sorry, Columbus Fish Market. We were there for a birthday dinner the day after Christmas and the music playing was more appropriate for a nearby diner than holiday fine dining. We asked about change of music and were told by the waiter that he thought the music fine but would consider a change later if needed. Since it was my birthday they had mentioned a free Sunday ice cream. Then the waiter raved about the carrot cake which I normally love, so we ordered it to share. We ordered four coffees and waited for quite some time until the waiter came with the bill before serving our dessert - "the acclaimed carrot cake." Ironically, the waiter had already laid out dessert silverware for us, but had forgotten our order of dessert. It was disappointing as far as quality carrot cake goes -- dense rather than moist cake. He then put on a full court press for us to subscribe to a Landry's membership card. He said it comes with a $25 membership fee but they immediately refund your $25 to your membership card if you go online and sign up. When the bill came, the $25 membership card was included with all of the other meal items as though we should tip for the $25 membership card as well - do you believe it! My wife then said "hey whatever happened to my husband's birthday dessert?" He then went on to comment about how they normally have a brownie with ice cream, but they had run out due to the holidays and did not have any substitutes. Naturally, my wife was thinking that the carrot cake would've made for a fine substitute, but no such offer was considered. Needless to say while, the food was good. Large spacious interior, but quickly filled with people. Glad we had reservations! The wedge salad was good, nice crisp bacon, plenty of blue cheese. The Ginger Salmon is where It lost it for me. There was no flavor, honestly tasted like it had been steamed. The sticky rice was great and the steamed veggies were fantastic as well. I have been going here since it was owned by Cameron Mitchell. First it was sold to Ruth's Chris and then to Landry's, the current owner. The quality of food and service has really dropped. Went there for an annual and traditional holiday lunch with a friend--we've been doing this at least 30 years. I checked the menu online before I went so I could decide. A lunch menu was online. When my friend and I were seated, my friend commented that the prices had greatly increased. It was the dinner menu. When I asked our server whether they had discontinued the lunch menu I saw online--he said 'they must have forgotten to give it to us.' He returned with the lunch menu. I ordered the tilapia bianca. It was awful. The shrimp was steamed/broiled but the tilapia was fried. Who puts a buerre blanc sauce over fried fish and pasta? The pasta was lumped together under a third of the plate instead of under all of the food. I ate half, and boxed half because I didn't want my friend to think I was ungrateful, and threw the rest away when I got home. This was on a Friday at lunch time. Unlike when it was a Mitchell's restaurant and full on Fridays--there could not have been more than 8 other diners. I noticed that the host was still seating people with dinner menus. Due to a mix up a week earlier, I was unable to meet my friend and he stayed and ate. He told me they gave him the dinner menu that day too. I don't think they 'forget.' I think that business is slow because the quality of the food has declined, and so they make up the difference in the lunch sales drop off by hoping people won't notice that they've not been offered the lunch menu. I ordered water, waiter asked me if I would like lemonade, Coke, flavored lemonade and went on to ask me about 5 other drinks! I kept shaking my head no and saying just water. Waiter said, "It looks cooked to me, I don't see any red." I could tell my husband felt bad having to ask again to have it cooked a little more. Really? How rude and uncalled for, to comment on how a customer likes their steak cooked and to tell the customer there steak looks like it is cooked fine when they asked to have their steak cooked a little more. My husband asked for a refill on his Diet Coke and never got it. After we finished and were waiting on our check, waiter said he would be with us soon. After taking drink orders and dinner orders, having drinks and bread delivered to a table of 6 we finally got our check. We were asked about getting a Landry's card (unsure of spelling). We declined because we only come to the Fish Market once a year. Waiter asked why we don't come more often, and waited for us to answer. We asked for our check again. "Fine Dining, Fast Exit" I visited Columbus Fish Market Sunday evening in a group of ten, with high hopes and a healthy appetite. The ambiance was classy, the service attentive, and the menu was clear, tempting, though a bit pricey. . I ordered grilled salmon and shrimp, with mashed potatoes, steamed broccoli, and lemon water. Everything looked fresh and tasted great--no complaints on presentation or flavor. But the next morning, my digestive system filed a formal protest. It started with a polite stomach grumble. By noon, I was dealing with urgency and mush. By late afternoon, it was a full-blown liquid evacuation. Not ideal. Thankfully, things returned to normal the next day, but the 24-hour fallout was memorable for all the wrong reasons. To be clear, nothing seemed off during the meal. No strange smells, no questionable textures. Just a delayed gut reaction that made me wonder about what went wrong and this upscale seafood joint. The reason for 4 and not 5 was because they didn't have any oysters. That was the only reason I wanted to go there that night. And it was my first time at the restaurant. It's giving upscale Red Lobster, and I don't mean that in a good way. I will say that the service was good - our waiter was kind and attentive. The food was not, however. The calamari was good but quite salty. I got the lobster bisque and it was super runny, like a broth - not good. We shared a stuffed fish dish with the standard sides. The sides were fine, albeit forgettable. The fish was just lame. It didn't really have any flavor, at all. It wasn't "bad". Just not good.
