I was looking for a hairstylist that specializes in natural hair care. I've been transitioning for 7 months and I was fed up with my birds nest(curls to naturalists). I found Comb My Hair(Salkis Re) and decided to give her a try. I was nervous at first(very nervous) because I hadn't been to a hair salon for about 15-16 years(yeah I know right?) Well, Salkis reassured me that I would be fine and would leave her styling chair fly....SHE SURE WAS RIGHT ABOUT THAT!! I came to the appointment and she was so nice and evaluated my hair. She gave me a wash and deep condition and this AMAZING temple massage and proceeded to twist and work magic on my birds nest(curls to naturalists). LOL!! My hair was trying not to dry all the way but she was patient and determined to make me look great! I contacted Salkis about doing some box-braids for an upcoming Caribean vacation. I had had them done by another stylist once before, and though they were convenient during the trip, I found them to be very uncomfortable. The hair was super heavy and because I'm very physically active, it hurt my neck to move about, so as soon as my trip was over, I promptly removed them. I explained all this to Salkis, and she was very understanding. She was patient, knowledgeable and gave me useful advice about what kind of hair to buy. I could tell just based on our phone communication that she knew her stuff. We decided on Sengalese twists instead of box-braids because I didn't have the time or patience required to sit for a 6-8hr braiding session. Also I'm tender-headed and have very fine hair, so I was not looking forward to the pain either. I could not believe how fast and gentle she was. She had my hair done in 3 hours! The parts are even and neat, the twists are all consistently sized, and although she didn't make each twist very small, she arranged the hair to camouflage the parts and give the illusion of more fullness. I went to her to get my hair cut into a shape and I do like my cut. The experience with is what I didn't like. I had no idea I was going to her home and not a shop. I saw the address and I was not sure. Me being a young woman, I brought a friend with me to get my haircut. So I got to her location and just as I assumed it was her apartment. So I called her to tell her I was outside and she finally came to let me in. I introduced myself and my friend and she kinda replied to me rudely saying she has a rule only the person getting their hair down could be there and if my friend could wait somewhere else. We stared at her kinda lost and she was like, " if it's going to be an inconvenience, she can stay." She started doing my hair but you can tell she was mad because stayed quiet and barely talked to me. She made me feel unwelcome. She later at the end of the cut started talking to me more. I understand her rule, I just wished communicated that when we talked on the phone or tell people her shop is her home. Then she had me wash my hair before I got there and charged me $85 for the cut, that's it. She didn't wash or style it after. I couldn't believe I paid so much for just my hair to be cut.
