Hakuhodo has some of the best brushes you'll ever touch. Every brush is hand formed with natural hairs, and the difference in quality between their brushes and your regular high end MAC brushes is quite easily felt. In order to visit the showroom, you really have to make an appointment ahead of time. It's located in a pretty small non-descript business park, and the store is fairly bare bones. They don't have every single brush on their website, but they do also sell some things that aren't available online as well. The girl working there wasn't able to help me too much with some of my questions regarding the difference of application between different hairs, but I didn't mind that since I had already done my research prior to visiting. I picked up a few eye brushes and a rather lovely blue squirrel cheek brush. The flat eyeshadow brushes and eyeliner brush were pretty good, but the stars are the cheek brush and the goat hair blending brush, both of which I use on a near daily basis. read more

I made an appointment for here as soon as I found out there was a store near me in LA. It was pretty easy to get an appointment within the week, on Black Friday. When I showed up I was nervous it was closed because the door was locked, but the sales associate came out quickly. He was very nice and never felt pushy or rushed. He was available whenever I had a question but managed not to hover over me either. I was very interested to learn that Hakuhodo makes some of Sonia G's brushes, and used to make Tom Fords before he switched to synthetic. I was mainly seeking another eyeshadow brush set now that I am using eyeshadow daily and am very happy with the purchase. I was so embarrassed at checkout when I realized I had forgotten my wallet, after having drove 45 min to get here, and was luckily able to pay via PPal. The associate was very nice about this and it had started pouring while I was there, and he walked me to my car with an umbrella. The collection here is just beautiful; if you are into fude I highly recommend the trip. Service is top notch as well, they really go above and beyond. read more

I made a special trip from the Bay just to come here and it was soo worth it. You ring a doorbell to be let in and right in front is fude heaven! They have most of the brushes shown on the US website in store. The best part is that there's a small station where you can try out the brushes on yourself with makeup. All the brushes were clean--I'm pretty sure this is the reason why they ask people to make an appointment beforehand--so they can prepare everything for you! There's also a video shown on the side about the history of Hakuhodo and the manufacturing process. A lot of people think Hakuhodo is crazy expensive, but depending on the series (such as the J-series and Basic line) the price is comparable to MAC except wayyy more soft, especially since MAC has switched over to all synthetic (although Hakuhodo has a synthetic line too that's soo soft too!). Great brushes are a good investment that'll last forever and you really just pay once, hurt once. I wish I had never spent my money on those cheapo brands like Morphe because #1 the quality is incomparable and #2 cheaper brushes fall apart not to mention when you keep replacing it, it's going to cost as much as Hakuhodo anyway. read more

I enjoyed my time here. My roommate called maybe three weeks in advance to schedule a Saturday 11:00 AM appointment. We're hardcore make up brush fans and it was nice how the lady didn't hover us. She did provided information on the different brush lines they had. My roommate was looking to invest in high quality brushes as she learns how to do her make up and such. I think these are just beautiful and better than buying MAC if you stick to the J series and I prefer my brushes undyed goat hair. It soft but a 'work horse' hair if that makes sense. This place is amazing. A spotless showroom with friendly staff to answer questions and make recommendations, and in a relatively private environment (appointments are required). Pros: + Hakuhodo is a company which produces makeup brushes (and speciality art brushes) which are all handmade in Japan. They only use the "hair tips" of the natural hairs/fibers used to produce the brushes, so the brushes are very soft and have just the right texture. Quality is top notch. + Their brushes have a range of handles but materially are the same. For example, their "S" line has the iconic orange handles and gold ferrules, but you can get the identical brush materials and workmanship in a cheaper "non S" brush with a black handle and steel ferrule if you like. I like having the option. + Plenty of free parking around the store. + The brushes are pricey compared to many competitors, but they have a well deserved reputation for top quality. As they say, "Buy once cry once." Cons: - The Torrance neighborhood this store is in is not great - when I tried to fill up my car at a gas station a few blocks away, I was harassed by three homeless men. So bring a friend if you can and try not to stop until you get to the store. It's in a suite in a business park. read more

Makes you feel like a kid in a candy store. Appointment only. The lady working here was super friendly and nice. I love the organized and simple set up of this place. All the brushes are display and then when you're finished choosing they give you new ones that are wrapped. I love that you get the whole place to yourself and you can even try the brushes on bc there's a section with make up so you can test to see how the brush applies with actual product!
