Everyone at my table was raving about their meal. The pancakes and the curried chicken seemed to get the most endorsements. The check was easy to settle since the price is not set. I had a burger, my wife had their "famous" curried chicken salad and my daughter ordered the strawberry crepes. We had no complaints. Service is warm and friendly. So the concept is interesting as the cost of your meal is donation based. It is also cash only as mentioned above. It just seemed odd as you didn't want to underpay since proceeds go to needy people. A delicious find in the tiny town of Smithville, the Comfort Cafe serves up a surprising lunch time culinary delight. In addition to providing a great meal opinion this "Donation Only" cafe also supports a recovery center helping lost souls find their way back into society. I had the turkey bacon cheddar sandwich with a cup of fresh fruit on the side. The bacon was cooked to crisp perfection and perched perfectly atop a mound of smoked turkey breast held in place with grated cheddar cheese melted over the top. The fresh fruit helped quiet the guilt for having the artery clogging bacon and cheese. Though a few of these things are not advertised here, I opted to check it out anyway after a family member recommended it. I spoke with the waiter about my preferences. Within a couple minutes someone from the kitchen came to talk with me to make sure he understood what I wanted, offered me some a la carte options with accommodations for my specific requests, and went the extra mile to ensure my requests would be respected. I've now driven out to Smithville twice to dine at Comfort Cafe. The first time I had the blueberry compote pancake and the second I had the fig and Brie omelet. Both were very delicious. The restaurant is a part of a rehabilitation program and runs on a pay what you can (suggested $10/plate). I love that the food is so good and that I am doing good by supporting a great program. All the employees have been very nice and attentive. I will stop by again the next time I am near by. read more

My friend lives in the area and normally prefers to cook, so when he suggested we go out to east I knew the good had to be good. This is such an amazing idea, I don't know why there aren't tons of these concept restaurants around Austin. Something about going to a place with a purpose removes any sort of pretense and snobbery from both the patrons and the staff. Places like this remind us that we're on this spinning rock together so let's just be nice to each other and eat good food. And the food is fantastic. This place smelled great walking in! They had plenty of room, so we were sat right away (three of us). The menu looked delicious, and couldn't make up my mind since everything sounded so good! We ordered two burgers and a French dip sandwich. We then proceeded to wait for 38 minutes for our food, possibly longer, I checked the time by when we took a picture. We got our burger and sandwich, and then another couple who came in way after us got their food, while my niece waited 3 more minutes for her burger. While the concept of this place is great, it's a by donation payment, I'm not sure if I'll be back. While waiting for food, they had at least 5-7 waiters standing around doing nothing, waiting for food. So maybe they need to teach a few of them to be cooks? While my husband was at a cycling event here in Smithville, my daughter and I explored this historic small town and discovered this "pay what you can" cafe. No price - you simply donate what you can. It supports a recovery group - everyone who works there are recovering addicts... drugs, alcohol etc... learning valuable skills while generating funds to support the group. Our waiter stopped by and told us his story - a recovering drug addict trying to make it. Not only was the food wonderful, the people were attentive and super friendly. And the great thing is you get to support a good cause. The curry chicken salad I had came with cranberries, walnut and strawberry vinaigrette. My daughter had a humongous burger which she declared absolutely the best. She had a side of potatoes with cheese and jalapeños! Awesome. After lunch, we picked my husband up from his event and went back for coffee and dessert. The banana cake with cream cheese frosting and walnut was out of this world. So was the pancake filled with cream and chocolate bits. If you're ever in this area, you should stop by! read more

The Comfort Cafe is a truly a hidden gem and is well worth the stop if you're ever passing through Smithville. I was welcomed by the host Dwayne who sat down with me to go over the specials on offer that day. All the staff are part of the Serenity Star program that helps victims of addiction overcome their past for a better future. The cafe is used for their fundraising and all payment is by donation only, pay what you will. I'm sure you'll find the food on offer, great cause aside, is well worth your money and the awesome atmosphere is guaranteed to boost your mood. I had a Philly cheese-steak panini made with in-house roasted beef that was excellent. The side salad was fresh and the dressing was top class.
