For the most part, Yunnan delivered. We came in on a Sunday at 5 pm, and the restaurant was moderately busy. We were able to find seating and order relatively quickly. Based on one friend's suggestion and a bit of online help, we ordered the Boiled Fish Fillet in Chili Oil, the Mint Beef, the Potato Pancake, and the Stir-Fried Rice Cakes. Overall, the meal was pretty good. The stars of the dinner were the Stir-Fried Rice Cakes and the Mint Beef (which was realllyyyy minty and herbaceous), while the fish tasted pretty standard for a typical Chinese restaurant. The Potato Pancake added some nice texture, but it wasn't particularly memorable and I probably wouldn't order it again. Now you might ask... okay? Cozy restaurant, fast service, good food--why the 0.5 off? And sadly, it was the dessert. Call me picky, but this was the part I had the highest hopes for. After finishing our meal, we decided to get the Coconut Delight and the Devil Sweet Sticky Balls (their words, not mine). The Coconut Delight was... okay. The best part was the bread (three pieces per cup), which, when soaked in the coconut milk, was just heavenly. But beyond that, the dish resembled a rather sad, runny coconut sago. The Devil Sweet Sticky Balls weren't much better. We loved the texture of the rice balls (chewy!), but the brown sugar syrup tasted burnt and left a strange, bitter aftertaste. This may have been a one-off, so we'll have to return to verify (and when we do, I'll update this review). But to give Yunnan the benefit of the doubt, I'll round up to a full 5 stars for now. For main dishes, fast service, and a cozy ambiance, Yunnan hits all the right boxes (just not quite dessert!)

The beef with longhorn peppers was very tender, and the sweet and sour pork had the perfect balance of crispiness, sweetness, and tang. The fish fillet in chili oil came in a huge portion, but I wished it had more spice. It tasted more like lightly spiced oil and lacked additional depth of flavor. I also did not enjoy the Dali mushrooms, as they were very dry and bland even with the side of chili powder. Overall, I would come back because the food is good, but if you're expecting bold heat, I recommend asking for a higher spice level. The service was okay.

Liked the udon noodles with chicken and bok choy, although a little less red chili pepper would have suited my tastes better (good for those who like a bit of zing to their food). The fortune cookie on the mousse was fresh and crisp, so good that some thought it might have been baked at Joanne Chang's Flour Cafe and Bakery. The finish was extra nice, with a red lucky envelope with chocolates accompanying the check, an orange at each table (signs for good fortune in the New Year), and red decorations hanging in the restaurant to create a festive setting. The shrimp, in particular, were coated with a thin layer of starch before being pan-fried, adding layers of texture and locking in the juices. This plate removed the scallions and onions to suit my taste, and if you like spicy food, adding a little chili oil would greatly enhance the flavor. Speaking of the menu, I was very pleased to see the amount of vegetarian dishes! You don't see that often at Japanese restaurants! For our appetizers we got the lobster Rangoon and spicy edamame. Technically the tofu is an app but you would never guess that from the portion size. The edamame were outstanding! They were spicy as expected and were so tasty. We demolished the whole bowl. The sauce was okay with it. After dinner our waitress brought a slice of vanilla crepe cake and ice cream! This was such a nice touch and it was SO good!!!!! One dish that was recommended by everyone that I was a little disappointed about was the lobster roe pasta. It was good but I didn't enjoy it as much as expected and it started become gummy like so if you don't eat it quickly, it may become like this. It is a little plain without the lobster meat but there is an additional $15 charge so that is up to you. We also got another dish, I forget the name I think it was some black bean octopus over rice. But this dish was great with a little spice to it. Enjoyed the sake flight as well, the menu is pretty descriptive so you can pick and choose which ones that look good to you.

I happened to be the only one in there, but could tell the staff was working on some online or takeout orders. I was nicely greeted and shown to a seat. After giving me water they took my order. I got the crab wontons, their take on crab rangoons, as well as three different rolls (yes my eyes are bigger than my stomach). I went with the eel avocado roll as well as the spicy tuna and yellowtail rolls. I was REALLY impressed by the quality of all the food. I was given the wontons first and they were perfectly crispy and filled. I dislike when the ratio of filling to wonton is too heavy on the filling side and things get messy. They were also SUPER hot which is a personal must. My only qualm is I would've loved a bit more sauce, there were a lot of wontons for that small dish of sweet chili sauce. In terms of the sushi I surprisingly loved the spicy yellowtail the best. Normally the other 2 are my favorite but I might've found a new go-to. The others were great as well, though. You could seriously tell the tuna was JUST cut from the fish (I watched the sushi chef do so!). Notably, the ratio on the eel-avocado roll was great as well as the amount of eel sauce. No need to pay for extra on the side! I will most definitely be ordering or dining in from here soon, this time bringing friends along!
