I try this place every 6 months or so because of convenience and its never fails to stun me with slow, awful service. The line rules change everytime i go in, the staff behind the counter are almost as bad as airline ticket agents-- indifferent, do bare minimum, never ask to heat up food. Shocking that it remains busy...again, lack of choices in marin. The food was good in the 80s-90s...its about a 3 (1-10 scale) now. A disgrace. read more

Comforts food is delicious!!! If you decide to eat in, you can't go wrong with any of the brunch choices. But, my favorite part of Comforts is picking a number and going to their line and picking a variety of different hearty foods that I can take home for the week for quick dinners. Their beef stew is delicious. Pork chops incredible. Catfish, fresh and tasty. The Turkey breast is fresh and real turkey. The salads are incredible. The lasagne excellent. The prices are a bit high, but frankly the food is tasty and I can tell good ingredients are used in the making so I am willing to pay a bit more. If there comes a point where life is very busy and you need access to well made quick foods. Comforts is your place. Or, just go in and try a different thing each week. Best French toast I've had in a long time but not thrilled to pay $15 for it. Shoddy service at the pick-up counter. Person in charge didn't check to see if everything was in the box before handing it over to the customer. I regret tipping them for this. Guy in charge then said 'you're welcome' when I didn't thank him...very condescending. Really unpleasant. Confusing with the coffee station too. This is very serious and I care about you so please pay extra special attention. We've found what happens when we stumble upon something that isn't even really very hidden from people but for which there is still a secret special quality particularly for folks far away that don't come to certain parts often. When we stumble upon them then immediately thereafter run to our favorite food or experience website or wherever and shout from the top of an electronic mountaintop about how splendid that secret is and then suddenly the parking lot for the trail is parked a mile out along the road and all you see all day is toilet paper along the trail and since the sun rises and sets just for us we realize that this only happened because we let the secret out. It's hard with those fidigity thumbs and our innate love for humanity driving us all to share instantly and often, but how about this once you just keep something under your hat, kk? Shut your mouth and do not even whisper over the pastry case in front and how one can load a picnic basket with all manner salads and sandwiches and there's even wine in the well-stocked market that attaches to the cafe. The food at Comforts is EXCELLENT. I have actually never physically been to Comforts but have been lucky enough to try many of their dishes. We recently catered an event with their grilled veggies, tortellini/veggie salad, and caesar salad. We ordered way, way, WAY too much but I'm more than happy to eat those salads for every meal during the next several days! I've also had their delicious chinese chicken salad and fried chicken with sesame (has a cooler name but I can't remember it...). Comforts, like McDonald's, ought to have a sign in front: "Over 3 million Chinese Chicken Salads served". How a place could make millions off a pretty simple, overpriced Chinese Chicken Salad boggles my mind, but Comforts no doubt has and I'm guilty of contributing my fair share. It's big, with a perfect combination of chicken, nuts, noodles, lettuce, and dressing and sometimes I hear it calling my name. As the weather heats up in the Ross Valley, Comforts is a destination spot and half of that destination is purchasing the Chinese Chicken Salad. The other food though, when I can convince myself to order something else, is really good too. Comforts is the place I imagine Ina Garten ("Barefoot Contessa" fame) would have opened if she'd lived in Marin: Excellent fresh food, a nice, airy place to sit and be served (indoors or out), a tantalizing brunch and lunch menu, lots of freshly prepared scrumptious takeout food (fresh shrimp-filled spring rolls) , delicious desserts (coconut cupcakes, mmmm...), indoor or outdoor self-service seating, and some little gifty items for friends, hostess gifts, or myself (cookbooks, ceramic-ware, etc.). Comforts is the sort of treat I can afford; neither cheap nor expensive, but priced exactly as it should be for a place that serves high-quality food I want to eat. I want to start by saying yeah, COVID is stressful on everyone. Believe me, I'm still working and I'm wearing my mask all day, communicating with stressed out people. I take this pandemic very seriously. But I'm sorry, there's absolutely no excuse for snapping at mask-wearing, social distancing customers when they have no idea that they're even violating a rule. Obviously, I'm not the only one this has happened to based on other reviews. Didn't even get to try the salads here, which looked pretty good honestly. I walked in with my mom to check out the fridge section. There was only one other customer in there, and it was a huge space. So, social distancing was definitely being respected. None of the workers said anything to me the entire time. I browsed the fridge and deli counter for a while, then my mom and I walked out to find my dad. Well, the second time when we came back in with my dad, I once again ventured over to the fridge, and this time one of the employees very rudely barked at me to wait on the spots they have on the ground, that I'm not able to look at the selections before getting in line. Why? I get COVID policies but literally not another soul was around me? But okay, so I wait on the spot as directed. Watch the same employee yell at my dad and some other customers who try to go to the fridge to browse. How else do you know what to get if you can't take a look? It's not like peeking through the glass at protected prepackaged food is touching anything or crowding anyone. There is also NO signage indicating that you may not browse. And there were maybe five people total in this huge area. My mom and I continued to wait on the spot. What finally did it for me was when another employee PULLED DOWN HER MASK completely off her face to direct some girls who walked in to stand on the other spot! Like, the whole point of the spots on the ground is to keep people safe and distanced, and so is wearing your mask! So the fact that this other employee took her mask off and shouted at someone was totally hypocritical and not necessary at all. I wasn't standing that far from said employee and after seeing that, I straight up walked out. This place doesn't even follow their own policies but has no problem yelling at their customers to abide by them. Unprofessional. read more

Always a great experience! The first time I tried it was for lunch. I had the Chinese chicken salad and it was sooooo good. We topped lunch off with a cookie and cupcake and I was so tempted to go back for another. The second time I went my kid polished off her breakfast. Our server was funny and thoughtful and helped make breakfast with a toddler manageable. We ordered a charcuterie platter for a lunch event at our home an it was a hit - not only beautiful but delicious. The ordering process was easy and the person who delivered was friendly. Overall, I highly recommend Comforts - both their cafe and catering. If I lived closer I'd probably be a regular. read more

I agree with everybody on how good the food is, but I wish the same people that cook it would be the ones selling it. Customer service is AWFUL. It is definitely not cheap, so please people (especially that somewhat older, skinny, actually lovely looking lady that worked there 8/5 at around 10:30 am and a bunch of the younger white girls), if you don't enjoy your work, just go to school or look for something else. San Anselmo is a bit off the beaten path toward the hinterlands of west Marin County, but Comforts hits home in an ultra casual environment that fuses bakery, cafe, deli, restaurant and corner store into one blended concept. They have an extensive menu offering a huge selection of ethnic choices and the food is great: I had the tasty All-american Chuck Burger made with Niman Ranch beef (always a good sign, good special sauce too). You can substitute the very good homemade potato salad and fruit instead of fries. Fresh baked goods include homemade tarts, cakes, pies, bread pudding and fruit cobbler. After lunch, swing around to the other side of the joint and browse the deli case, which is chock full of amazing gourmet entree items. I took home a few containers myself. This review is for Comforts catering, not the cafe itself. My wedding was this past September in San Rafael. My (now) husband and I found ourselves completely stumped when our dream wedding-food caterer ended up quoting us way over our food budget. Feeling somewhat defeated, we searched and searched for a new catering option on our $6,000 food budget and were hopeful we would get the look and quality of food we wanted. We found Comforts while just Google-ing one afternoon and I immediately reached out to their catering department. With a quick response, pricing information and some back-and-fourth discussion about what we wanted exactly (family-style dining, local and preferably organic when possible), we set up a meeting with Katie, Comforts catering coordinator. Katie was an absolute gem when we met at their cafe to create our ideal menu so that she could work up some numbers and give us a total quote/estimate. Katie gave us a few samples of food (YUM!) and 100% understood our vision and direction we wanted to take our food. About 4 days later, Katie had a quote put together for us. Before that email, I was nervous that Comforts quote would come near the $10,000 quote we had gotten from our dream-caterer just two weeks prior. I was pleasantly surprised when I found that Katie had cut that quote more than in-half with even more food options! With that, we decided that Comforts would be our wedding caterer and signed a contract. Over the next 8 months we adjusted numbers and some hors d'oeuvres options with Katie and she kept in contact extremely well, responding to my emails within hours, even minutes! About two months before our wedding, Rachel took over our account with Comforts and was our contact from there on out. A month before our wedding, Rachel met with me, our wedding coordinator, venue coordinator and rental coordinator (and my father) to walk the premises and know exactly what Comforts staff would be doing on that day. As a former pastry chef, our wedding food was VERY important to me and I was praying that Comforts would provide unique, flavorful and beautiful food to our guests... My first look at our wedding food was at dinner, when our food was brought to our table. I was AMAZED. It was 1) beautiful, 2) WARM! (usually wedding food sucks), 3) so delicious and 4) served the exact way I wanted. Both Rachel and Katie understood my vision and our desire for family-style dining. At our wedding, I noticed Rachel serving our head table and being hands-on with the servers and chefs... she (pardon-my-French) busted her a$$. I have so much respect for Rachel and how she took her job seriously, but also took the time to chat with me, give me a hug and even set aside leftovers for my husband and I to take back to the hotel with us after our long day. Comforts is amazing and I couldn't have asked for a better caterer for our wedding. In the end, Comforts was my dream wedding caterer and I feel so honored to have served them to our guests. I've ordered takeout from Comforts multiple times over the last few months and can say with confidence that this restaurant is phenomenal! It's almost become tradition when near San Anselmo to pay a visit to Comforts and eat at the nearest park or even have a car picnic. We always opt for the Chicken Okasan and it never disappoints, it's cooked to perfection, moist and tender on the inside with the perfect touch of crisp on the outside, the flavor is so unique and always so delicious. Think Chick-Fil-A mixed with Chicken Katsu all wrapped up into a delicious package! Food is always ready fast and is always delicious, there was one instance where instead of our usual meals we accidentally received nothing but chicken by the pound, but I'd be lying if I said my inner Okasan-Aficionado didn't enjoy it thoroughly (there's a reason no one called to have it changed). However, we have not yet gotten to the star of the show, dessert! Just thinking about the Mini Chocolate Cupcakes is tempting me to get in the car and drive to Marin right now! These Cupcakes were remarkable with a moist crumb, and a deep chocolate flavor, coupled with the sweet and ever-so-slightly tangy cream cheese frosting those cupcakes were definitely winners. Based on those baking skills I can only imagine just how great Breakfast and Bruch is. Comforts is one of those places that's both unique and consistent. Every time you go you know it will be good, no matter what you get. It's a modern deli with a California twist--a fusion of Japanese and Western that's always fresh and delicious. Comforts seems to have a way with chickens such as their justifiably famous Chinese Chicken Salad (the only other version I've tried that can equal theirs was at the 20th Century Fox movie studio commissary in LA, and it wasn't open to the public--Comforts is!). Also excellent are their teriyaki grilled salmon, hot dog in puff pastry (really), Asian chicken pasta salad, meat loaf (both turkey and beef versions--get extra sauce), as well as virtually all their vegetable and fruit salads. And don't forget dessert (I never do!), including their famous coconut cake and cupcakes, fantastic brownies, and assorted pies and pastries. Comforts can get crowded--because it's good! You take a number and wait your turn, then sit at one of the many tables either inside, or at the sidewalk cafe tables. This is also a great place to get a few take-home containers for dinner, or the next day, or, as I did, a nice box of chicken to eat on your next flight while everyone else in coach is chocking down peanuts and pretzels. read more

I tried Comforts for Brunch today and enjoyed their Chinese chicken salad and a chocolate chip scone. I've heard the salad was delicious and after trying it, I thought it was not bad. The dressing and salad was very light. The scone was great and I loved the butter and jam with it. Service was fine and prices were over $10 and totally reasonable for the quality of food. There's also a nice outdoor seating area out front and a bakery/deli section for take out. *Update: The restaurant portion sure gets busy and last time I was here we waited a long time with no one ever calling our name so we left. During the ending of Covid, I helped with a celebration of life event and ordered the food through Comforts Catering division. The food platters where beautifully arranged especially the fruit and cheese platter and the dessert tray. Also, their salmon aram rolls were a tasty hit too. My Daughter and two Granddaughters are visiting from England. My Daughter chose Comforts for her birthday lunch, as she said she misses the excellent food there more than anything (More than me, I had to ask?!)! I've wanted to try this place for a while since my boyfriend has hyped the Chinese Chicken salad and had to try it for myself. We got a large salad to go to split between the two of us. It is a solid deal for $12 to feed two people, although it definitely could have used more chicken to add to the value / filling aspect of the dish. I would recommend getting a large salad and another dish to feed two people. It was definitely really tasty, though, as well as they were able to accommodate gluten free needs. The service took a little bit after we ordered and I was surprised by this because it was decently quiet for lunch hour and most of the food they were getting out is prepackaged. I did love the selection of items they had to choose from and am curious to try other things on the menu. I definitely would have this salad again but along with other reviews I've read, I definitely agree that they could give a bit more chicken in their to-go salads to make it a true Chinese **chicken** salad. Stopped here on the way to SF, we had to go to a Body Time Shop for Ms Wifey. We picked some items from the deli and were back on the road to our final destination - The street fair on Union Street in the Cow Hollow area of SF. We had heard of the chinese chicken salad and the pastries were to be respectable. By the time we were done ordering we had amassed a 42 dollar bill to go. 2 medium chicken salads, a edamame wild rice salad, brocollini w/crimini's, tapioca pudding, chocolate mouse, a chocolate macaroon, and a couple of cookies. I am glad we bought what we did, the street fair food was mediocre and expensive and lack many choices. My last 2 visits there I have been yelled at by 2 employees on both days. I was trying my very best to follow the directions but they were almost impossible to first hear the staff when standing outside. And then to know when to self serve. I have been thanking all service employees everywhere Ive been from the grocery store to the car wash to making a donation at the Salvation Army so I enter businesses with a good attitude and grateful heart. I dont know what is going on at Comforts but there is really bad mojo going on there right now. Just be careful. So, today we just had lunch at Comforts. Again. I enjoy Comforts SO much that I can't believe I have yet to write here about it. And we all eat at Comforts, a lot. I think that I haven't written here yet is because I take it for granted. Comforts is more than just their wonderfully simple and delicious and fresh fresh fresh Chinese Chicken (or Tufu) Salad (which are their claims to fame). Those salads are the thing you find yourself craving when you don't even expect to. All someone has to do is mention it and I'm down there soon getting one. They have them all ready and made to go for when you're on the fly or on your way home. Busy day? Don't cook. My absolute favorite is to buy one big CCS and one big CTS (copyright!) and mix them at home. Everybody's happy! No leftovers. What else do I love about Comforts? Lots. Today, while we were lunching (that's a verb in California, right?), no fewer than 4 people that I know from town stopped by the table to say HI! This is a community gathering type of place. Friends, family, kids.... all welcome and happy. Comforts has restaurant seating on one side, and a kitchen table environment, very casual on the walk-in deli side. Something for everyone. You can always see mothers with strollers, teens (on the iPhones, of course), seniors, ...everyone. They have great outdoor patio seating, too, for those perfectly sunny Marin days. The take-out counter is always buzzing, so take a number and try not to drool ... the foods in the case are varied, fresh, colorful, and inviting. Dinner's ready!
