Came here wjth my parents on a Sunday afternoon. We have pretty low standards when it comes to decent restaurants especially when they're smaller local businesses in town. We ordered for the outside seating area and waited about 20 minutes for our first dish, clam chowder. It was good. Then we proceeded to wait another 45 minutes for the rest of our dishes to arrive. We watched parties who sat down after us receive the same dishes we ordered, before us. It was not a crazy busy day. There was maybe four other tables outside half of which already had food when we got there. When we went to confront the hostess about our wait time and wanting to leave, she proceeded to tell us they only had two people who fixed up the food for the outside tables and how it was "very busy". She told us as we were about to leave that they were saucing our plates that were just now ready to come out. We decided to stay. Hush puppies were completely cold. We received our oysters on a half melted pan of ice. Our seafood boil was cold and I guess the "sauce" she was referring to was just old bay seasoning on top. That isn't a problem however, that doesn't take 45 minutes to do. The shrimp was good but everything else in the boil was pretty much just plain boiled with nothing more than old bay on top (and arrived cold just like the hush puppies). Overall, we were excited to try this place and left, unfortunately, very disappointed. Outside seating area is nice however, so many other places in town worth the time and money for much better service. read more

Had a big family dinner here yesterday and it was great! With our large party of 11, we sadly could not sit outside as it was very busy, and had to settle for two back-to-back booths. First, shoutout to our server Savannah who handled our big party with grace and professionalism - thank you! Food was reasonably priced and plentiful. Our two booths had smoked fish dip and conch fritters for appetizer - both delicious and the conch was evident in the fritter, which is not the case at every restaurant. Clam chowder was pretty good. Several of us had the fish of the day - my blackened flounder was great! Hubs had raw oysters and said they were delicious and fresh. My wife and I live on the DE shore but love coming to SA every April. After driving 13 hrs. we popped into our go to spot, Commanders for dinner. Our server was overwhelmed and forgot my wife's drink. OK, whatever no big deal but when we mentioned this to her she got very nasty then proceeded to make the wrong drink. We always loved their clam chowder but last night it was stretched with way too much flour. My oyster po boy was on a really nice roll with lettuce and pickles with three or four oysters on the outer edge to make it look packed with oysters. All I tasted were pickles. The oysters on half were averaging 36.00 per dozen. The going price in DE is 1.00 to 1.50 each for Chincoteaugue salts. These are seafood areas so they shouldn't gouge like a New York restaurant. We were going to order more food but it's obvious they become yet another generic tourist restaurant. Sad to say we won't be back. read more

They have a really good thing goin on here. Local clam "farm to table" restaurant! Been coming here since they opened a few years ago. I'm gonna rave about their back deck overlooking the intercoastal! My family and I experienced the best sunset while enjoying our blackened flounder! The fish was cooked perfectly! So juicy and well seasoned! The outdoor walk up menu is a little smaller than the inside menu, but if you have pets or children this is a better option than eating inside. I wish they had a few healthier options on the Commander Post menu, but they did offer to get anything from inside. So that was a plus, but I felt like they were busy and I didn't want to complicate things. While I was ordering, several customers walked up to get a beverage refill and I think the guy was overwhelmed. Orders taken and refills on drinks are the same location. They could benefit from having two people there who can handle alcohol at the same window. Other than that it was good, the hush puppies tho were not the best. Very dense. I'd stick to the other side items. Kinda wish I asked for a side salad vs the Cole slaw. I'll know what to order next time! It's a beautiful place! Also, they could have a recycling container for glass. I noticed all the beer bottles going in the trash can. Unfortunately, that made me a bit bummed. Best. Shrimp. Ever. Wow, we had to come back again tonight after tasting the fried shrimp last night! We've been coming to Crescent Beach for 30 years and Commander's has the best fried shrimp we've ever had. In addition, the datil fish bites are fresh and delicious. I'm also a big fan of the cheesy grits...and I don't even like grits usually! We eat here relatively often and service is consistently good. The servers and bussers really watch the tables so you always have what you need without a wait. We only go when we can eat on the outside porch. There are fans out there and you usually can feel a nice breeze. I had the drink pictured below called Summer Rose! If sweet and tropical tastes are your thing, this drink is divine. I also didn't get my usual steamed clams but tried the seafood ceviche. The seafood was huge mussels, shrimp, calamari and grouper marinated in lime and served with some salad over boiled potatoes. The seafood was as fresh as it gets. I had lieutenant boil and trust me it was plenty for us both with leftovers for another meal. The crab legs that came with the boil were cooked perfectly. They came out of shell so easily. I will say they went heavy with the red seasoning sprinkled on top of everything. I will ask for less seasoning on top next time. I am sensitive to really spicy seasoning and this was hot! I was so surprised to stumble on this place and that it wasn't at the top of the list of best shellfish in St Augustine. We were greeted by Josh who is AHHHMAZING. We shared a bowl of clam chowder, locally farmed in their back water.Oysters on the half shell from Virginia and a bucket of steamed oysters that was also locally farmed and raised in their back water. Waters in St Augustine are still not cold enough to eat them raw from here. (All this was explained by Josh) We Finished off with one of the most delicious thin crust key lime pie I have ever had. Went to commanders for king crab .. 99$/lb (yes that's right) and 104$ if u want a side of Cole slaw with it. What was brought out was insulting.. we actually had to ask if they were really king crab. They were super small, one leg on each plate was empty (only 4 legs in each order). What a fabulous place to eat. The food is is out of this world. The smoked fish dip and crackers for appetizers is a MUST. The services was excellent, very friendly and professional. Wife had the seafood combo with fish and shrimp. I enjoyed the fried shrimp plate. They were both excellent. Shrimp were to perfection not to mention the wife's blacken fish was absolutely delicious. If you have kids that can't wait 45-65 min for food, keep driving. The taste of the food was good I'll give them that. The portions for the price however, severely disproportionate. Everything is "market price" aka we make it up. I had a fried flounder plate at "market price". The flounder was also on special as the catch of the day. This comes out as a measly 6oz piece with a side of fries for $27!!! The tiny piece of fish was laughable. My wife got the same flounder but the fried fish sandwich again at "market price". The piece of fish didn't even have enough meat to cover the bun. Just empty space. $28!! I guess we know why they don't show the prices before ordering. I inquired about their lieutenant boil bucket (serves 2). $70. Looked tasty but again not nearly the amount of food worthy of the price tag. This was a one and done stop. read more

The night we went was extremely windy with heavy rain and storm right as we were leaving so I failed to get more pictures. My husband's fried shimp and son's fried fish were delicious. I got the special Tile fish blackened. I did not like it and it was not very blackened. Don't think there are open during the week, at least here in August and bad weather, so go while you can. The food was excellent, fish was flaky, hush puppies were crunchy on the outside but soft in the middle and not dried out. Service was excellent, they helped us navigate the two areas. Which brings me to this- there are sort of two restaurants. The main restaurant has outdoor seating but not necessarily a great view of the water. If you follow the deck around back, walk down towards the food truck. This is where you get a view of the water. Don't be fooled by the fact that the food is prepared in a food truck. It's the same menu and is delicious. From the back deck you can walk down to the water- perfect for keeping our 6 yr old busy while waiting for our food. read more

The flounder was good, I'd give it a B, but the shrimp and oysters definitely an A. The hush puppies were best a. C, but hey who cares about the hush puppies when your seafood is delicious. $$$ is a bit pricey, and that's without alcohol, but for a special meal occasion (our wedding anniversary), it was worth every penny, and the service was very good. Oysters were great! I consider myself an oyster connoisseur, comparing all to Acme Oyster House in New Orleans. These Virginia ousters were fresh, tasty, and well shucked. No shell fragments! Their Commander's brewed wheat ale was refreshing. Rather hoppy. The locally farmed clams Re very good, but the beer and pork belly broth was rather salty and too porky. The reason for the 3 stars was because their snow crab was really old., it was extremely dry and definitely not fresh at all for market value. Pretty disappointed. Their shrimp however was good.
