    VA oysters

Forgot to do my Yelp review for Wednesday 12.28. After a trip to JAX to drop off our daughter four of us thought it was time for some seafood at Commander's. Apparently lots of others had the same idea. We started with some beers and wine. For appetizers a dozen raw oysters (from Virginia). Excellent. Now the sad news. No seafood left. Yep all gone. Well good for them in today's market it's good to see a restaurant doing well. We will be back.

Stopped for the outdoor seating and some cold beers and messy seafood- it hit the mark with each of those. My group sat at the picnic tables in the waaaay back and our waitress/bartender was wonderful. Super woman, actually, because she was understaffed and was bartending, bussing, serving and taking orders all by herself! Seafood was a tad underwhelming, I was craving good crab and peel-and-eat shrimp, but both were unfortunately overdone. I'm not an oyster fan, but my group seemed to enjoy them. Po-boys were all delicious and sides were as expected

Stopped by with a party of six for dinner and was not impressed. The piece of fish I ordered was the size of my cell phone along with a bowl of grits for 35.00. Beware the "market price" pricing, which is on most items on the menu. My husband ordered a dozen oysters. I've never seen oysters that small. And you would think being a fresh shrimp town that they would have fresh St Augustine shrimp - nope - they serve Argentinian (red) shrimp, which are sold at Walmart. But I'm sure they'll get enough unknowing tourist traffic to keep them going. Me being a local, won't be back.

This place is very quaint real beachy feel and delicious. It has the beachy ambience., The food was amazing, the Lieutenant boil could use some more sauce options the potatoes were slightly dry, but overall, it was delicious. . The service was impeccable., Mia was our server., She was very bubbly and fun and personable.. I would absolutely recommend this place. We had three options of where to sit we could sit inside or outside or outside by the water. We chose just to sit outside, not by the water because it was hot and we saw there was more shade. It was recommended we try it out up here in Georgia, before we even went on vacation and I highly recommend it

If you want fresh and local, this is the spot. We stopped for lunch, had the smoked fish dip and a bucket of oysters. Delicious!

Came here excited to try some local seafood while on vacation in St. Augustine. Unfortunately, they ran out of all the crab on a Sunday afternoon, so we weren't able to get any of the seafood broils. We know that happens and we rolled with it - so we choose the mahi fish, red snapper, and the fried fish sandwich. All of which were good, but the portions seemed small for the price paid. The sides were fine (no seasoning on the red potatoes, so pretty bland). And the service was fine. I enjoyed the views outside. What we did have of the fish was very good!

Ask the Community - Commander's Shellfish Camp

    Accessible by boat?

I saw boats drive by, but I didn't see any docking area at the restaurant for boats.

Are they on the water - with boat parking?

Yes, they are absolutely on the water (their shellfish cultivation requires it), but I do not believe they have boat slips available to the public.

It's still a great location with a varied menu for many appetites. The sweet tea is really way too sweet. I don't know if we got a bad batch or what. The fried chicken was really, really fried. Without asking, the server discounted it for us which was nice. The coconut shrimp were big, as expected, and pretty tasty. The shrimp in the shrimp n grits were good, but the grits were very soupy and seemed like they were quick cooked instead of letting them really stew. The sides that weren't fried were a bit of a disappointment. The kids enjoyed their fries and burgers-- no complaints they. They were given coloring pages but no actual crayons... when we asked, they said they didn't have any. Service was very kind but very slow. Once we finished eating, it took quite some time to get our check. Not bad for a leisurely dinner, and we didn't mind.

This restaurant is one of our "go to" for a real authentic Italian meal…read more We brought some family that was visiting during the week and everyone was very satisfied with their meals. The only complaint was that the dishes with vodka sauce had way too much sauce on the plate. My sister-in-law can't eat gluten any more as of last year, so she had bolognese with gluten free pasta (she said it was good but not great) but she said that is because she misses her regular pasta, so no pasta will ever be great again for her. My Niece had pasta with vodka sauce, there was way too much sauce on the plate but it was very good. My Nephew had chicken parm with vodka sauce and he loved it, again a little too much sauce on the plate though. I always get the same thing, escarole and beans with grilled chicken over pasta. This time it was a bit spicy for some reason, so I didn't love it as much as usual, but it was still very good and something you just can't find in this area. Dessert was cannolis and home made cheese cake. The owner makes the cakes here and they are all very good. Service was very attentive and good. P.S. their bread with whipped butter is excellent!

The restaurant is adorable, featuring memorabilia from the family's original restaurant and family photographs. Our server was excellent. I started by treating myself to a lovely bottle of wine. Sometimes dry rosé is a bit hard to find, but the Fuedo Disisa was excellent. While we waited for our meals to be prepared, we enjoyed a basket of soft, warm bread with herb garlic butter. It was like having dessert first! My husband ordered angel hair spaghetti with marinara sauce. He really enjoyed it. I ordered chicken Marsala. Both dishes were excellent. The Marsala sauce was so flavorful, plenty of mushrooms, and is served with your choice of pasta--I had penne. The entrees were both plentiful portions and we had enough to take home for another meal. We saved room for dessert. My husband had the chocolate cake and I had the Italian cheesecake which is made from ricotta cheese. It was creamy and delicious, and I enjoyed it with an excellent cup of coffee. Highly recommend this lovely family restaurant, a favorite of the locals in St. Augustine.
