This can be good, and it can be middling, but it's never bad outright. I haven't been there in several years, but we went recently as it's convenient, large, and has been around forever. It's still a great location with a varied menu for many appetites. The sweet tea is really way too sweet. I don't know if we got a bad batch or what. The fried chicken was really, really fried. Without asking, the server discounted it for us which was nice. The coconut shrimp were big, as expected, and pretty tasty. The shrimp in the shrimp n grits were good, but the grits were very soupy and seemed like they were quick cooked instead of letting them really stew. The sides that weren't fried were a bit of a disappointment. The kids enjoyed their fries and burgers-- no complaints they. They were given coloring pages but no actual crayons... when we asked, they said they didn't have any. Service was very kind but very slow. I have been coming here almost my entire life. This has always been my favorite restaurant, but when they sold a few years ago, I have watched it go downhill. The service in my experience over the last few years has been just fine. No complaints about that. The first time we went back after the change, all the decor was gone and they only had about 5 things on the menu because they said something was wrong with their oven or stove or something. Now, the menu is VERY small compared to what it used to be so there really isn't much selection. The atmosphere has lost its cozy unique feel. A lot of the funky crazy decor and old fishing equipment (nets, poles, traps) is gone. They've replaced the old glass tables and chairs made of drift wood with plain old industrial style decor that feels boring a like a millennial burger joint--not like a nice creek side restaurant. A lot of the original decor is gone. I always get the three way shrimp. I went a few days ago and my grits were room temperature. The "stuffed shrimp" had uncooked crab dough balls on it so I didn't finish those. I pretty much only ended up eating the BBQ shrimp because I lost my appetite. When we made it back to our room, I actually got sick. This has been absolutely heartbreaking for me. I understand that things change! But this has not been a good change. I have been back many times over the last few years and the quality of the food has not been the same and the taste is not as good. My family has had mixed experiences with them as well over these last few years under new ownership. As upsetting as it is and as much as this restaurant has always meant to me, I don't think I can go back--especially not after my food made me sick. For reference: we arrived shortly after they opened at about 4:30 and were one of maybe 5 other tables seated at the restaurant, so it should have been one of the first meals to come out for the evening. I can't think of any reason my food would not have been cooked properly. If I hear from family or friends that things have changed, I would love nothing more than to be able to return! Staying at Beachers Lodge, we were hungry and decided to go to the Oasis; which was closed. Thank goodness it was! We visit this eatery each year and look forward to going there because it's a family tradition. The service is always really, really good and that has not changed! In the past, the food here was also really good. Unfortunately, it has slipped to mediocre. It was disappointing to discover this. We also noticed how dirty and unkept the restaurant looked and in such disrepair. The rest rooms also reflected neglect and some toilets were inoperable. It's as if the owners are no longer interested in basic upkeep and maintenance! So sad to see this establishment's decline in many areas. Maybe they'll tear it down, rebuild, and improve the quality of the wonderful menu items they became so famous for. It's not what it used to be. Found out they have new owners and the elderly couple who ran it for years has since moved on. They have 20 yr old kids running the kitchen and it shows in our entire tables meals. They also have done away with the cracker style chairs. That was sad to see them gone. I heard they sold them to patrons. Kinda sad. I guess it's an end of an era. I hope they don't change the decorum more, because this is what makes Saltwater Cowboys, Saltwater Cowboys. Also, for the love of God and all things sacred do not mess with the Original House Salad with the white dressing! That was MY FAV!!!! I would get that as a double order with my meal in lieu of two sides. They always had the freshest salads. I'll share some tips and then I think you will be okay as the food was good, the prices what you expect, and the service was cordial. There were just the two of us and a few larger parties were waiting to be seated. We were offered a chance to sit on the patio. I usually don't mind that and the evening was lovely. We were seated toward the back and the neighborhood with a house being constructed is not as charming as the salt water marsh. If you are from the area and see beautiful marshes all the time that might not be important to you. Our food was very slow in coming out. LOL when we left the restaurant was nearly empty so all those other folks waiting had left and gone home. To be fair they adjusted our bill without us asking for that. The vibe of the place is 100% fish camp feel. Since I have been to a "fish camp" type restaurant in the past. So that was fun and the kids thought it was cool. Problem was food took a long time to come out. Nearly an hour for small portion appetizers. Then roughly the same amount of time for overcooked bland food. Our waitress was nice so that was a plus. The kids ate their food but when a 6 year old says "their food isn't good" that's a problem... So for the future something should change in the kitchen or their menu items. Stuffed shrimp were over cooked so they were stuck to the bottom of the pan. They were ok, but not what they rave about. Crab legs were good but served cold. Bbq shrimp were weird; they need to change that. No one liked them at our party of 8. Burger seemed like a bubba burger and not fresh. Cheese grits were over cooked. Mac and cheese was ok. We haven't been to the Salt Water Cowboys for years, and were concerned about a number of the reviews on Yelp. I didn't realize, the previous owners had sold, and there are new proprietors. The restaurant opens on Friday at 4:PM, and our friends were already waiting for us in a booth. The restaurant is very rustic, Old Florida, and cozy. There is outdoor seating, but today was hot, and stormy, so it was not an option. Our waitress, Gabby, took the drink offers, and she was quite attentive. We had not seem our friends in ages, so there was no rush to put on our orders. We enjoyed the drinks. We decided on 1/2 Rack of Babyback Ribs, Blackened Shrimp, soups and side salads. The creamy corn and crab soup was especially delicious. The food was very good. We didn't have a long wait from ordering and being served. The portions are generous.. There was no room for dessert. We made a reservation a week before for a birthday party of 15. Upon arrival we were told they couldn't find our reservation, but could accommodate us, thank the stars as most of our party had driven an hour + to come here. Our waitress, Kari, was great. Absolutely zero complaints about her, such a sweet heart. The food left a little to be desired. We ordered the gator tail as an appetizer. It was mostly breading but it was OK, edible, not the worst gator tail I've ever had...the accompanying orange marmalade coconut sauce wasn't a hit with us. Another part of our party got the frog legs, they were decent and seasoned nicely. I personally ordered the fried shrimp. When asked if they were fresh, local caught, i was told "I think so" which is usually a "no but I don't wanna tell you no" to me. They were okay, didn't seem fresh local caught but weren't overcooked so that was as a plus. Baked mac n cheese was ..not Kraft which is cool but not great. Edible, but like your aunt that can't make mac n cheese for holidays made it. Fries were overly salty and you could tell their fryer needed to be cleaned. Another part of our party got the shrimp 3 ways, the stuffed shrimp was waaaay over cooked and rubbery. Another member got the steak of the day which was ribeye and they enjoyed it. 2 people got the shrimp scampi and they were not impressed. Overall we enjoyed our time, the drinks were good the service was good the food was okay but as someone who's last visit was 15+ years ago I don't think we'll be in a rush to go back.
