Recommended to us by a server at Jungsik, after learning we lived in Jersey, we had high hopes for Common Lot. We had reservations at 6:30 on Wednesday. The dining room wasn't crowded and we seemed to be the last to arrive. We were seated right under a drafty and cold air intake (which caused our food to be cold super fast unfortunately) but with a good view of the open kitchen. The food was good quality and prepared well. The only dish we didn't like was the salmon sashimi as the cabbage was overpowering. The broccolini was great and our favorite. This is our go to local place. Common Lot is refined food served by the most congenial and competent staff in simple modern digs without the pretense of similar fine food establishments. The new summer tasting menu at $95 is a bargain in my view. Portions are perfect but don't expect enormous plates. The four course prix fixe is so varied and that's what makes it even a good choice for vegetarians. It is a limited menu but if you a food enthusiast like me, just trust the chef. They'll accommodate allergies but I would not recommend going if you have a lot dietary restrictions or strong preferences as it is really a place where you need to allow the chef and team to do their thing. This time around, I opted for the smoked beets to start, followed by the slow cooked hen egg and then the confit sea trout in the most delicate dashi. Talk about umami! I had the coconut parfait which was simply divine. I also got to taste the carrot cake order by others at the table. And you can never go wrong with the compte cheese for a savory option. Not sure why this place has many bad reviews because the two times I have been here have been splendid. I recently booked a table for four for Saturday dinner and this place didn't disappoint. The menu has changed since I was here last year but I thought for the $90 pre fix price the food was great. I started with the salmon then had the risotto, the char (fish) as my main dish, and to end the evening- a lovely dessert. A new American restaurant with an atmosphere similar to places in NYC with the flair of a friendly local shop in Millburn, this BYOB is a teaching restaurant, with folks being trained all the time in the kitchen and at our table serving us as they learned the craft. Service was great - from the entry with the greeting by the guy with a great mustache, to the server who was calm, patient and provided some good suggestions. Tables were small sized so some of our BYOB ended up on the floor to make room for the dishes. We tried three appetizers: Hamachi Sashimi, rhubarb and ginger dressing, cucumber, radish, togarashi ($22) was light, a bit spicy and peppery, not a bad way to start. Paneer "Meat Balls", peanut satay sauce, fried chicken skin, curry leaf ($18) didn't really appeal to me, an interesting take but a satay/curry like sauce wasn't enough to save the paneer which lacked the firmness I usually like out of paneer. We also had their special, two house-made biscuits with a simple flavored butter (I don't remember exactly which flavors), and a strawberry compote spread that was excellent. Soft and flaky, sweet. Also good as a dessert, I suppose. The main, I had the 6-Hour Lamb Leg ($48), pistachio & mint relish, edamame, lamb lyonnaise potato, jus. The lamb was cooked fully, soft, and not gamey; served already pre-sliced (no bones), with the potato mixed with some lamb, too, in the layers. I liked it, though the mint didn't really come through on the dish. My fellow diner picked the Pan Fried Arctic Char ($42), almond puree, asparagus, capers, 62°C egg (a sous vide egg basically) which was a good sized piece, a little salty but otherwise a pretty well-cooked piece of fish that was very traditionally plated and served. For dessert, I had the strawberry chia seed dessert, which had sesame crumble - probably the most enjoyable part of the meal for me. BYOB, so keep that in mind. I have been wanting to go to Common Lot since it opened. The place always got rave reviews and I hear nothing but good things about Chef Ehren and Nadine. Unfortunately, I have a condition that progressed and made me disabled and I thought my days of going out to nice restaurants might be over. But i slowly adapted to my new lifestyle and my wife finally made a reservation for me to check out the place i've been talking about. It did not disappoint. For one, the restaurant is absolutely handicap accessible and co-owner Nadine helped me on the lift. We did their seasonal (winter) pre-fix menu and my God, just absolutely delicious. The flavors were... i just don't think words can describe it. I really loved the Amuse Bouche to start and what looked like a simple comfort food dish in the Short Ribs was just phenomenal. It's been weeks and I'm still thinking about that Chocolate Mille Feuille dessert. Service was top notch and everyone there was friendly. (they even offered us free chocolate chip cookies) By the time you are reading this, I doubt some of the things I'm mentioning are on the menu and they've moved to their Spring lineup, that just makes me want to come back. read more

We had a fantastic dining experience at Common Lot before attending the opening night of Take the Lead at the Paper Mill Playhouse. Our party of six enjoyed the Winter 2025 fixed-price menu, which included a starter, entrée, and dessert--all of which were unique and delicious. Nadine, the owner, warmly greeted us and led us to our table. She was such a gracious host. The atmosphere was very comfortable and the staff was excellent in providing great service. Amazing Mother's Day brunch! The service was very attentive. Out waitress offered fantastic recommendations and was well versed with the menu. We were consistently checked in and taken care of. The table had burata and the cauliflower. Burata tasteless the salad ordinary but okay. The cauliflower was bland. Next I had risoto. The only thing of the night that had flavour...interesting. Next...the venison...perfectly cooked...not gamey at all...but nothing...bland peppers bland plate. Arctic char was so intense a salmon flavor that the 4 ordered were almost totally uneaten. One sent back twice. And finally the deserts. Some sort of spice chai cake and a panacotta...inedible .What gets me is that the restaurant was full with, I assume, people familiar with good restaurants in Manhattan. What are they thinking? A Pre-Fix Menu on a Friday Night. I love a one page menu. It makes it easy for me to make a choice. Also, it makes me think that they've created dishes after dishes and these options came out as their best, so I feel like I was choosing from the best of the best. And among the options that night, the one I liked best was the Crab Bisque Rissotto, followed by the salmon sashimi. I only took a piece of this sashimi and though, I'm not fond of sashimis I'd make an exception on this one. And if they have the warm chocolate chip cookie, get it! Came here for a surprise 40th for a close girlfriend of mine and it was absolutely great service and delicious food. Here's my experience in a nutshell: Parking: 2 lots walking distance and street parking available... bring quarters but they also accept credit cards Make reservations and it's BYOB The entrance of the restaurant is somewhat hidden (well for me lol) it's on Essex street side....restaurant is so cozy and nicely decorated. We were seated upstairs and I love how the hallway was full of books (lots of cookbooks). I had a group of 6 ladies and we ended up ordering all the "SMALLS" which were the appetizers including the special lol. WE ATE IT ALL! OMG it was fantastic. My favorite was the duck liver pate... the way the ingredients blended together was AMAZINGGGG! We asked for more bread and we just wanted to lick the plate lol. My second favorite was the roasted potato dumplings... perfect bite, not heavy, the flavors were balanced... so good! The "Sharing plates" we ordered both lol but I LOVED the Branzino in the curry sauce... WOW the sauce was so flavorful, fish perfectly cooked and had no bones.... I wanted to eat it all! The lamb shoulder was just falling off the phone and the yogurt on top of it was at a different level. We even ordered the special "Duck Breast" wow that was great. That was gone in seconds. And for dessert the pastry check, Kaitlyn, baked a special cake for our celebrant .... it was a merengue ... cake was like pound cake ... caramel and berries... it was fantastic. This was a very nice restaurant. It has two levels I wish I got to see what the upstairs was like. They have an open kitchen concept which is usually sold out but you can request it via phone or email. I went there the day after Valentine's Day it was pretty busy. I got there about 15 minutes before my reservation and had to had to wait those 15 minutes which I understood. There are a few parking lots around across the street on both sides of the restaurant. From the outside of the restaurant you see the kitchen and people cooking which is pretty cool. The food was good I didn't really like my cauliflower appetizer, The olive taste was pretty prominent and I'm not the biggest fan of olives but I was able to remove it from the top of my dish but should've asked if I could've- my fault. It's BYOB, nice wine glasses so bring your wine! Overall we spent about $140 it wasn't too bad for an app, entree & dessert. We had asked to pack one of the dishes that we didn't finish should go and it was accidentally thrown out but the chef was kind enough to give us a brand you short rib entrée from the back for the mistake. Things happen I appreciated the service. Only reason I get four stars because it's kind of tight where we were seated the tables are really close to each other where we sat so we could hear everything the table next to us was saying since it was a larger party and they just weren't so polite. In my haste however I ordered the Comte not realizing it was Comte butter (it clearly says butter on the menu) and it came with a huge Pita. That was a bit disappointing at I thought finally a whole prix fix menu with low carb options for every course. But they tried to find me an alternative, and were so nice about it. My girlfriend and I came here for the first time and had a wonderful experience. The open kitchen concept is cool as you can watch them cook and ring up your food. First and foremost, both the host and waiter/waitress were nice and explained everything from the menu to the rules in place for COVID. Due to covid, the menu was shortened to accommodate the 1 hour and 30 mins time limit. We ordered and shared 3 appetizers and 2 entrees as that was the recommended amount for a party of two. Appetizers: Lumpia w/ vinegar sauce - It was good but not the best or worth the price Beef meatball skewers - Was surprised by the size of these meatballs. For the size, it was cooked nicely without being dry. The glaze was a little salty for my taste and the miso aioli had a nice umami flavor but it definitely added to the saltiness. Maybe add some veggies or pickled veggies along with it? Duck breast w/ kumquat and spicy sauce- We both agreed this was the best item by far. It was cooked pink and came with kumquat sauce (citrus) and spicy chili oil with grilled enoki mushrooms (nice chew). Would definitely get this again. Entrees: Beef short ribs w/ coconut glaze - The second best dish of the night. Soft and delicious boneless short ribs with a slightly sweet coconut glaze. Teriyaki salmon - The salmon was cooked nicely but I didn't really see anything special since it was just teriyaki sauce. Without a doubt our favorite restaurant within 20 min radius from us. When it was time to venture out for the first time since the pandemic to have a proper, inside, sit-down meal, and to quietly celebrate our anniversary, this was the obvious choice. Even with a limited menu, the Common Lot does not disappoint. We were warmly greeted in the foyer and had reservations (highly recommended). We chose cod, salmon, a number of sides, and brought our own bottle of wine. Everything was done to perfection, but the salmon in curry sauce, as well as the "simple" side of rice, take the cake this time. I'm not a rice eater at all, but couldn't keep my fork out of that bowl of this buttery, fluffy deliciousness. The salmon was a spicy adventure and finger-licking good. Average. It's better than the other restaurants nearby but that's not saying much. Branzino: it had vanilla in it. The branzino was cooked fine. It wasn't overcooked so it was tender. It was slightly fishy, there was some pink parts. I've ordered branzino before. The sauce was sour, slightly acidic and slightly vanilla. To me the sauce didn't work. Salmon pasta: the salmon eggs on top didn't work. It was also extremely lemony and sour. I hadn't been back in three years. Small portions, lackluster service, and really pricey. Highly, highly recommend this spot! We went here for brunch and haven't yet been for dinner, but their items for brunch are very, very delicious. We got: (1) House Made Banana Bread, seasonal jams & cultured butter - delicious but nothing special. It's basically banana bread I make at home but fried on both sides on a pan so it's extra crispy. The jam and and especially side of banana-y butter are delicious. (2) 15th Century Cilbir Eggs, confit garlic labneh, herbs, paprika infused brown butter, ciabatta bread - soooo good. The eggs were perfectly runny and the sauces were over the top. So delicious! (3) Sydney-Style Corn Fritters, avocado salsa, bacon, soft boiled eggs, coriander - I'm biased because I love avocado. This was super good! (4) Potato and Scallion Rosti, smoked salmon, crème fraiche, dill, pickled red onion - this in and of itself is delicious but the previous two dishes s above are more delicious so in comparison it's not as good, but don't get me wrong, this dish was superb too. We'll be back to Common Lot! French press coffee was good too, it's cool that they have both dark and light roast you can choose from. The only tiny negative about brunch here is that the portion sizes are on the smaller side so I don't feel completely full afterwards. What a gem this restaurant is. Wish we'd discovered it sooner, but we'll definitely be back now that we have. We just enjoyed an absolutely amazing meal with excellent service. From James, who welcomed us at the door, and took the time to speak with us later, to our waiter, Tim, and the support waitstaff. Quiet, unobtrusive, helpful, and vigilant. I I think a minute of our wine glasses being emptied, they were refilled. Excellent service. Then there was the food .... We eat at Michelin-starred restaurants, and some of the platings here were as good. We started with the Hamachi Sashimi, which was amazing, as was the next course, the Australian Winter Truffle risotto, and it's a generous shaving of truffle. The Pan Fried Branzino was also wonderful, and the Seared Duck Breast was ok, but not up to the standard of the rest of the meal. The desserts - Coconut Panna Cotta, and a "Peaches and Cream" with past streusel and vanilla custard were excellent. My husband is not into desserts, but his panna cotta disappeared is a heartbeat. The coffee was another treat. So many restaurants serve mediocre coffee. Not here, the dark roast coffee, served in a French press was soooo good! A lovely meal. My fiancé and I came here on a cold December night, the week before Christmas ready to eat everything in sight. The greeters at the door, dressed in holiday decor, led us up a flight of stairs. To the "chef's library" we went and were seated, "The menu looks delicious!" my fiance tweeted. Duck Liver Parfait (15) is a must, the creamy texture with jam and dark chocolate I trust, went superbly with the sourdough bread. Next up was the branzino fillet (33), now I was hungry, but yet I must say, It was quite filling and portioned big, with mussels, potatoes, and parsley sprigs. Finished with a delicious creamy lemon reduction. What really stole the show, was the braised short rib (38) though. Think carrots and onions and rice, with mushrooms, and combined just right. We were already full, but had to finish every bite! "We must get dessert for sure!" "But babe, I'm so full food is coming out of my pores!" "Well, I'm ordering the apple pudding with butterscotch (12)." And eat it I did cuz it was already bought. It tasted a little tad bit too sweet but overall OK! THE END (happy 2019 holidays!) P.S. Before starting this review, I want everyone to know that I never leave negative reviews. Even if restaurant is mediocre, I appreciate when they at least try their best. However, that is just not true for Common Lot. Save yourself the trouble of coming here - especially for a celebration dinner. For appetizers: 1. Duck liver parfait - solid 2. Braised octopus - solid 3. Japanese eggplant - ok, would not recommend others to order here but rather try at a Japanese restaurant For entrees: 1. Short ribs - solid 2. Duck breast - meat was not fresh and evident in the taste (a special, not on menu) 3. Pan seared snapper - raw in the thicker half. Even with the crispy skin, the meat stuck together as a clear indication it was not cooked to be ready for serving. When the bill came, we were surprised that there was absolutely no comp for the raw fish. When we asked management to reconsider, they argued with us that the raw part of the fish was recooked (read: not the whole dish, they only took part of the fish back to the kitchen....) I should probably mention that this was suppose to be a special dinner to celebrate my mom's birthday. I made a note that this was a celebration dinner for a birthday when I made the reservation, but unfortunately there was no indication that the restaurant intended to help us celebrate. I was extremely disappointed by this since I have good memories of the restaurant pre-COVID and hyped it up to my parents before we came. So when the manager argued with us, I chose not to argue further - I didn't want to make a scene since I already made a mess of my mom's birthday by making her come to this restaurant to eat uncooked fish. We paid the bill, and the manager repeatedly thanked us in a heavily sarcastic tone - which was rude and uncalled for. We still left a 18% tip because we didn't want the wait staff to get in trouble, but every cent of the $250 bill was spent with deep dissatisfaction and regret. Came here with friends on a Saturday night. Reservations are required and when we arrived there was no wait. Ambience is great as it has an open kitchen and bright lights. Main dining room was kind of small but still roomy enough for our party of 5. I think there is an upstairs dining but I didn't see it. 4 course fixe menu and the food was great. The menu changes seasonally so depending when you go they will have different courses. I thought i was going to leave hungry but portions were just right. It's byob so that is a plus as well. Service was great as our waitress was very attentive and took care of us very well. Would i come back? Common Lot is the real deal in all main categories and honestly, I was thrilled. When we arrived we were seated in the center at the common table where more than one party is seated all together. Not my thing so we asked to be moved. The hostess couldn't have been more gracious or accommodating and promptly seated us elsewhere. Service was attentive, friendly and efficient. Our server was more than pleasant and accommodating. She gave us suggestions on what to order and basically everything was on point. The place is striking in it simplistic beauty without being over the top or gaudy. The open kitchen is a nice touch even though I really had no idea what I was seeing. Being completely clueless in the kitchen means that I can watch without fully understanding what's going on. It's kind of like when I watch Telemundo, I get the gist but really have no idea what the hell's actually happening. Almost immediately we noticed that the people sitting next to us were eating something that looked pretty cool. Then we looked around and every other table had ordered the same thing and pretty much everyone was devouring it with these elated looks on their faces. The guy at the next table, obviously noticing our perplexed look informed us that we absolutely needed to get the lamb shoulder. we did and OMFG it was amazing (see pic). Which brings me to my next happy disappointment, the small portions. The lamb shoulder at $80 could easily feed 3 or 4 people. That's 3 or 4 really happy, full people with shit eating grins on their faces because the lamb shoulder is spectacular. In conclusion, if you want to go to a new, trendy restaurant that's over the top expensive, with pretentious employees, tiny portions and mediocre food, sadly you'll need to look elsewhere. Loved it. I've eaten here at least 7 times and have tried really hard to appreciate maybe the nuance of this restaurant but I can't find anything that justifies the price and my time here. Ok the menu is interesting, albeit full of typos, and doesn't really deliver on what's advertised. For instance, the menu describes the branzino coming w a smoked creme fraiche. It tasted like creme fraiche straight from the container and marked up bc it was piped on the plate w a star tip. The lemon gel was interesting and the roe and spinach on the plate were good but not outstanding. It's an open kitchen and I didn't like seeing one of the chefs (sous chef I think) rubbing his eyes, touching his hair and tasting w his fingers. The salmon sashimi was described as having nuoc cham,which it didn't have. When I asked the server he asked the kitchen who said it was mixed in w the Yuzu which it wasn't. It was so underwhelming on execution for the menu that is put forth. What sealed the deal really was when I asked the server if there was diced cornichon on the sauce gribiche served w the asparagus. The Common Lot's menu focuses on appetizers / sharing plates, and has a few main courses. For two people, we ordered 4 small plates, a side of coconut jasmine rice, and one main- and were both very full. The tuna sashimi of the day was the star for me. The fish was delicious, dressed well and I like the toasted pieces (of rice?) that added another dimension. All of the textures came together well. Next was the bacon jam and butter with sourdough toast. This was pretty good- velvet butter and you can't go wrong with bacon in a dish. The lumpia (Filipino rolls) were also tasty, but they didn't 'wow' me at $14. Neither did the three grilled shrimp for $16. They were good but not five star worthy, and they brought out multiple dishes at once so the shrimp got cold by the time I got to taste them. The jasmine rice was flavorful and coconuty but had some big chunks of salt that I didn't particularly like. Last- the Branzino which was a main course- perfectly crispy and moist inside. The potatoes, spring onions and the sauce were all on point. Overall this was a good meal- I wouldn't give it 5 stars though. Has gotten progressively better over the years. Was a bit too "try-hard" a place when it first opened but over time they've gotten the balance of food choices and vibe right. Menu items are creative without forcing it and the last couple of meals have been enjoyable. Service is very good and welcoming especially since reopening from lockdowns. Common Lot was a very pleasant surprise on my recent trip to New Jersey. My then fiance and I were in town to visit her family and to celebrate our marriage the following day. Her sister wanted to take us out for a nice dinner and decided on Common Lot based on positive Yelp reviews. We couldn't have been happier with the evening. I'm not going to go into detail about the ambiance and decor because you can google photos and figure it out yourself. Besides, only a snob would pick a restaurant based on what color the drapes are or something insignificant like that. The food is what really matters and in this regard Common Lot knocked it out of the park. We had a large party so nearly every appetizer and entree were ordered, all with positive remarks. My wife loved the branzino fillet..the fish was cooked to perfection. She liked it so much she wants to attempt to recreate that magic at home. I had the Arctic char and had to exercise restraint in devouring the dish and embarrassing myself in front of my in-laws. The macadamia nut puree was an interesting choice and complimented the entire dish. To top it off we had a slice of smore cake with a personal message of congratulations from the staff. First time dinning at this wonderful location and could not be more pleased. The gentleman who greeted us, whom I believe his name was James, was more than gracious. He made us feel more than welcomed. Our server, Tom, was wonderful and very professional. He was also very knowledgeable about the menu. I really appreciated how he explained the menu and the specials. My family and I started with the Brussels, the bone marrow, and the pork belly. All 3 were delightful (Thank you chef & kitchen!). They were good portions to shares between the 5 of us. It is a BYOB spot, which honestly I thought was pretty awesome. There is a liquor store across the street to buy wine, or they have a delivery service (in which the restaurant does not benefit from) if you choose to have your bottles delivered. Highly recommend this spot. It's small and intimate, which is amazing. And the staff is superb and showed us a great time. Thank you and cheers to the entire staff. read more

The service is not what you would expect, the waiter was abrupt and condescending. I would give this 0 stars for the lack in professionalism and hospitality. The menu is heavily Asian-influenced with sauces hiding the taste and quality of food; the wagyu short rib curry was unimpressive as the curry was not refined nor seasoned. The "spaetzel" was subpar as it tasted similar to stale water with no salt/seasoning. I expected a better quality, better sides and overall a better approach to food preparation. $200 later with a waiter constantly pushing the check to me. You might as well take the trip to Manhattan prices but unfortunately not a NY quality. A good thing is that this place is BYOB. Not a place to return in my opinion. read more
