I'm always excited about unique places like this, and I love BBQ, so I was even more excited to stop here after a day of blueberry picking. I really reallly realllllllllly wanted to love this place, but I didn't at all. I ordered the ribs with a side of potato salad, cowboy beans, and a piece of cornbread. The ribs were just OK. I tasted more of the burnt wood than I would have liked. They did somewhat come off the bone easily, but they didn't have a ton of flavor, and there was nothing special about them. I have had better ribs at places like Texas Roadhouse. The potato salad was similar to store brand deli salad, and even had a similar tanginess to it. The cowboy beans were more like chili, and they weren't bad. The cornbread was awful which I was most disappointed about. I'm completely in love with cornbread, and I feel it's a pretty easy thing to make delicious...well, this sucked! It couldn't have been more dry, tasteless, and nasty than it was. My friend enjoyed their buffalo chicken sandwich and it did look delicious. The best thing I've tried here was the few fries I stole off of my friends plate. I love the outdoor seating, and the setup of the Commonwealth BBQ, other than that I was hugely disappointed. read more

This is the best BBQ around. The chicken sandwiches are juicy and flavorful. Love the ribs. Sides are all amazing but my fav is the southern greens. So good! I never eat chili but tried some (bcz my order for beans must have gotten mixed up with someone else's chili sides and we ended up with it in our bag) but I was very pleasantly surprised at how yummy it was. The first time I went there (months ago) I got the stuffed jalapenos (best I have ever had), and the Commonwealth sandwich, completely delicious. For the past month I have been craving those stuffed jalapenos, so I finally got some time to go back, they were better then what I remembered. Ended up getting another sandwich and the owner gave me a sample of the mashed butternut squash. All the food is delicious, but the stuffed jalapenos are the best! read more

I think they're getting their stuff together. Just picked up a pulled pork sandwich and brisket platter with ribs and, unlike previous orders, every detail was perfect. And fast even tho there was a good Friday night crowd. The food is ALWAYS good but too many mistakes in the past. Back on our list for regular stops. Jury's out on this one. Overall mediocre and I so wanted it to be great. Bourbon Pork Belly was very good, as was the black bean rice it came with. Fries had good taste but were soggy. Seemed like the brisket was boiled or baked before they smoked it. No bark and no smoke rings in the meat. Very mediocre. The collards where very "plain" and the beans tasted more like chilli. For true authentic BBQ you need to go to Kinfolks in Taunton when they are around. read more

I was really happy to find Commonwealth BBQ. Not a lot of BBQ options in this area and Commonwealth has a good menu of a variety of smoked meats. The sauces are pretty good and there are multiple options to meet you tastes. It's take out or outside dining only. A good option if you need some decent BBQ. read more

The pulled pork was ok but still needed sauce for full flavor. The Cole Slaw was horrible and just tasted like cabbage. The sauces were not that great. Cornbread was to dry. Took forever just to get a sandwich. read more

Ordering food went well, the cashier was friendly. But, my food sat on the windowsill for almost 15 minutes. I went to the window thinking my order must be ready and the three people who worked there just ignored me, including the cashier who took the order. Finally, someone looked in the bag, and then called my number. No apologies for the cold food or long wait. To top it off, the food was mediocre - cornbread, brisket sandwich, pulled pork, grilled corn and coleslaw. The BBQ sauce wasn't even good. Nothing positive to share here. read more

Went with my boyfriend today we got the sampler couldn't decide- The ribs were delicious! He loved the chili- chicken was cooked to perfection. They offer many sides, the beef brisket was not good it was dry and had no flavor- the sausage was great and the pulled pork was pretty good- definetly just starting out and they will need to change some things up but we would definitely go back - there were a lot of younger teens working but they all seemed to be doing there jobs could not see the cook @ the smoker but I don't think it matters the age of employees if you get fast and good service which we did read more

Stopped the first time and tried the Wampum Sampler to get a taste of everything they offer. The board said it was for 2. The boat load of food that was presented would have fed 4! My daughter and I had lunch at Commonwealth BBQ today, again, and it was great as usual. The Mason Dixon sandwich is amazing and I cannot get enough of the Coyboy beans! Today though we got a special treat. Chris, the owner, brought us into the kitchen to see fresh smoked brisket coming off the smoker. The five-star "Whoohoo! As good as it gets!" tag from YELP definitely applies to this place. It's definitely "as good as it gets" in the narrow niche of New England BBQ. This is the first time I've reviewed a place on YELP. I was moved to do so because, judging from the sparsely populated parking lot, this guy seems to be a BBQ savant but an idiot businessman. The menu is confusing as hell and makes it look like items are more expensive than they in fact are when the price of most dishes includes a bunch of sides. The signage saying "Commonwealth BBQ" is so inconspicuous that I wouldn't have known the name, unless I had made a point to find it out. My wife and I split the St. Louis pork ribs and cheese fries (plus the little sides that go with the ribs, such as cole slaw, cornbread, sweet potato, etc.). The ribs were delicious, smoky, fall off the bone tender, and enhanced several of the homemade BBQ sauces that are self-serve. The chili on the cheese fries was so great we got some to go. Amazing chili. The cornbread is the only thing I could criticize as it was too crumbly. I made a return trip today for the brisket and it was as stellar as the ribs. read more

Really poor showing here, what a rip off. Bbq in a converted gas station should have been my first clue but I went ahead and ordered a mason dixon (sliced brisket sandwich) and an order of fried pickles. Sixteen bucks for cold fries, soggy, barely breaded pickles and brisket that was basically inedible. The entire meal was cold, even though I ate it immediately. Brisket is supposed to be slow cooked but this tasted as if it had been microwaved, dry and oddly stringy. Others have complained about the portions but two bites of this alleged bbq was enough, I simply couldn't eat it and I was practically starving. Had to go to Mcdonalds and order off the dollar menu and compared to commonwealth barbecue it was a treat. read more

My boyfriend suggested stopping by this place over the Labor Day weekend as the skies opened and it started to rain. I was shocked to pull up and discover this was not a restaurant at all (with inside seating), but take-out with picnic tables. "Hello?! It's raining out and we're eating... OUTSIDE???!!! Moi?" NOT happy! :-( What's a good Jewish girl doing at a place like this? No tablecloths? Pork? Oy vey! Did I mention my shock? For the record, I am not a BBQ fan. My boyfriend IS however - and having lived in VA and NC for many years, he knows good BBQ. Wanting some, he wasn't about to let a little inclement weather get in the way. Considering I was the one who was starving, I was along for more than just the ride. I wanted food, just not barbeque. Alas, the things we do for love! Luckily, we arrived when we did, because shortly after sitting down with our food, cars pulled in and there was not an available covered table to be had. I did not know what to order, so he ordered the Wampum selection which included chicken, beef, and pork selections. The chef prepares all meats sans sauce so you can enjoy the true taste of the meat. All delicious. The ribs and brisket were the stand out items. The sides were wonderful as well - and the hand cut sweet and regular potato fries are good enough to call your girlfriends to join you! All I had was the "Commonwealth" sandwich. This is some of the best pulled pork I have ever tasted, and I have tasted my fair share. It was not sauced, which is the way it should be considering they have 4 or 5 homemade sauces for you to choose from on the counter. The slaw was very pleasant ...fresh, crunchy and and a nice compliment to the sandwich. Fresh cut fries were basic but very good as they were cooked properly. Having been a resident of central North Carolina for ten years I had the pleasure of tasting some of the best BBQ pulled pork in the country. When I moved back to the northeast I struggled to find BBQ that could even hold a candle to what I had in the south. Well, to say the least, the search is over. I'm going this a poor rating as the service was horrendous. I ordered a combo family dinner. There were about a dozen teenagers walking around in circles with their heads up the you-know-what behind the counter doing who knows what but and were the most inefficient workers I have ever seen. I waited maybe 30 minutes, when virtually all BBQ is precooked and just needs put together in a box. After 30 minutes I noticed a box sitting on a shelf in the back that was there for about 10 minutes. That was my dinner, they had it ready and just let it sitting there. I asked, and they said oh yeah and brought it up. At that point half the food was cold and soggy. I had them redo the fries. I ended up waiting close to 40 minutes. The food was okay but there's better BBQ around and way way better service. Try PJs in Medway. read more

It was our first time here and we'll definitely be back. We had the fried pickles to start. The sauce that comes with them is awesome! I had the half size of pork ribs. They were ridiculously tasty. I loved the roasted corn on the cob, just wish it was bigger. The sweet potato fries are the best I've ever had. And I loved the sea salt on top of the corn bread. The BF had the smokey chicken sandwich. And it was dressed perfectly. He also loved the hand cut fries. The weather was just perfect for sitting outside. There were a lot of people there but the wait was far less than they estimated. We were eating in no time!
