#115 in my Coffeeshop Chronicles. My family decided to go on a day trip to San Diego, and I was in desperate need of caffeine while we were still en route, so a quick Yelp search led me here. Let me just start by saying that Communal is one of the prettiest coffeeshops I have ever been to. It's an open-air shop where they essentially roll up the glass walls and windows to let in that nice ocean breeze. The coffeeshop has a modern chic interior design with an industrial ceiling, sky lights that add to the bright lighting, concrete floors, and a mix of wooden and white tables and chairs. The shop is spacious with plants everywhere, and they even have a cute little gift shop for customers waiting in line to order. As for my coffee, I ordered the Rose vanilla latte. To be honest, I might as well have just ordered a plain latte because the flavoring was too subtle for me (I could taste a hint of rose but not the vanilla). I would have preferred for the flavor to have been more prominent. That being said, it was good coffee - rich and creamy. All in all, I'm rating this place as four stars because I enjoyed the ambiance of the coffeeshop (more so than the coffee), and the espresso was objectively smooth. ****************** My Ratings: 1 Star: Terrible; just thinking about it makes me angry. 2 Stars: Wasn't a fan so Not likely to return. 3 Stars: Meh. It is pretty pricy and I understand because of the location but this most recent time I ordered one of their signature drinks and paid for two extra shots totaling 11.75 and was given a cup of milk basically. Aesthetically it has a very clean and modern look with trendy accents. Sits on a corner and has a very breezy vibe to it. I met up with my best-friend here to catch up on the weekend. I originally expected just a typical coffee spot off the 101 but they offer much more. We ordered the toast flight for brunch paired with a glass of Rose, an espresso shot, and the seasonal cinnamon fig iced latte. Everything was great and I highly recommend coming here. Favorite toast was the avocado prosciutto. The cinnamon fig latte need just a bigger fig flavor but overall it was good and I would order it again. This place always has a line... that is a very good sign. Great find for a quick breakfast. Their pastries are fresh and delicious. Ours were devoured before I could snap a photo. I really enjoyed my black tea and my husband loved his coffee. Kids had smoked salmon bagels minus the capers. Really good portions. I had the herb avocado toast which was excellent. Super cute and trendy place right in the middle of Oceanside. Came here after having lunch and just ordered a croissant and it was so flaky and pretty and soft and delicates and full of chocolate! So so yummy! The decor inside was so pretty and they sell small super trendy and pricy cute goods. The service was good and they were very kind and offered to heat our croissants! Will try a cup of coffee next time! This place is really for sitting and studying and reading and just enjoying the environment. Very nice addition to the Oceanside coffee culture. Communal is a perfect spot for relaxing and enjoying good cup of coffee or some food. This coffee shop offers good variety of coffees. My favourite was latte flight which came with lavender and vanilla latte. Both were delicious. We also ordered salty caramel coffee which was very nice. We ordered pastry to accompany the coffee as well. The pastry was served warm and was very tasty. Next time I definitely want to try their food. The food selection was pretty good and look appetising from reading the ingredients that go into the dishes. The shop itself is spacious and inviting. The decorations were very modern. So obsessed with this place! A review is well over due. Each time we come to visit we make sure to stop here. The smoked salmon bagel is my favorite! (Even my 5yo loves it) I've also had their goat cheese toast which is equally amazing. And on the weekends they have VEGAN DONUTS which is such a treat for our daughter that has an egg allergy. Beautiful atmosphere at this coffee shop! The inside is bright, with plenty of natural light coming through. I absolutely love the look of this coffee shop, and it creates such a warm and welcoming environment. I've been here a few times now, and what I love about it is that it's very spacious with plenty of places to sit both inside and outside. Inside there is music playing, however it's low enough to be able to work or have a conversation. They also have strong wifi, which is important while trying to work! Communal is all things Instagrammable and stunning. Not just a place for a delicious cup of coffee; Communal is aesthetic and cool too. I visited on a weekday morning when I had a little extra time to actually sit and enjoy coffee and a snack. If you have time to relax at a coffee shop, this is the place where you want to go. It's surprisingly busy all times of day. There's a mix of people working on their computers, visiting with friends, and just popping in for some good coffee. They have a little shop in the front of very trendy cute homeware and jewelry. Plants brighten up every corner too. read more

So far one of my top coffee shops in Oceanside. This cute coffee shop serves not only coffee, pastries, and toasts but also has an array of Knick knacks and a bouquet shop. The highlight is also that they serve wine ! It definitely is esthetically pleasing with all white walls and counter tops and natural plants and wood. I love coming here to study and hang out. I got a kefir soda ($6), which is my go-to here because I avoid caffeine. I've also tried the espresso tonic, which turned out to not be my taste at all, and the barista kindly made me a completely different drink and said that espresso tonics are very hit or miss. You can order directly from your table using QR code, which is so convenient. The shop is spacious and cute. There are tables outside and inside and a back patio shared with other shops. There are two bathrooms that are clean (but no paper towels, only hand dryer). They sell some cute and aesthetic items by the register, which would make good gifts. I came to communal yesterday for First Fridays. This business shares a huge outdoor space with lots of tables + chairs + lounge decor. Love the outside space! I ordered a beer from Bottlecraft next door (delicious west coast style IPA) and the communal pizza. I sat outside to wait for my friend and enjoy my beer. The pizza was delivered by a friendly looking older gentleman and it looked DELICIOUS!! And it was! Pizza was so so good I even devoured the crust. My friend really enjoyed the pizza too. I will be back to check out communal's place of business for coffee and to see what other yummy food they offer (which is why I'm only giving 4 stars for now). read more

I don't know how but I have found myself at the Oceanside Communal more often than the two much closer to my home in central SD. But alas the Oceanside location is GREAT. It's near matsu and a few other big players in Oceanside just off the main drag. The best part? The easy parking that the other locations have burned me on make it my fave. The avocado toast never disappoints. I also always grab a baked good. Their selections are always freaking awesome. I will say I had one breakfast sandwich that had no meat and I didn't realize until i bit in. It was still good but could've used some bacon. If you're in the area stop in. 4 months ago when they first opened, this was my go to place. Now that they're a little more established, this place has gotten pretentious and the service has gone downhill. There was no line and I had to wait 10 minutes for 2 lattes. One was made incorrectly and there was no apology. The barista even half assed the latte art when she had to fix my order (but the other one was perfect). I think the manager even asked what happened and she didn't acknowledge she made a mistake. There's also no consistency in the drink. One time the mocha was super chocolate-y and another time it was full of milk and almost no espresso... It's too bad seeing the service go downhill like this.. I really liked the staff when they first opened. Everyone was really friendly and super accommodating (even suggested substitutions that weren't on the menu for my diet). Luckily there are a lot of other coffee shops that have popped up! read more

This review is only for drinks since when we arrived at 6:30 the kitchen was closed. We were greeted and informed about the kitchen immediately so didn't even think about food which was helpful. We ended up with 3 drinks only: 1) single espresso- fruity notes with green bite at the back of the throat as all good hipster coffees should be according to the driver 2) cucumber, lime, mint cocktail - ok. Not enough mint for my taste and light on the alcohol but cool and refreshing 3) Cab. Franc wine that my brother-in-law said was one of the worst he's ever had. Plus he paid $16 for a glass when the bottle goes for $24 - ok if the wine was drinkable but he said it was horrible. 4) Waters - kids had waters and we had to ask for them since the had nothing in the water pitcher but they politely gave them to us. Cleanliness- there was hardly anyone there and all the empty tables had crumbs, water rings or coffee spots. People bus their own dishes to a cart which was empty, so not understanding why one of the 2 front staff couldn't have wiped them down when they took the dirty dishes to the back. Hubby had to wipe down 2 tables with a stack of napkins for us to have a place to sit with our drinks that came out quickly. Bathrooms were clean and at the end of the night that's impressive. Communal is my go to coffee shop in Oceanside to work at or take friends! It's so cute and welcoming, and there's tons of seating, especially including the back patio. The pastries are always delicious, and they warm them really nicely (not too fast, it's always heated all the way through). I don't drink coffee, and I wish their tea list was a bit more expansive (I'd love a London fog ), but the matcha, chai, kombucha and kefir soda are yummy! My friends love the latte flight. Love the vibes of this place! It is so beautifully decorated and there is plenty of space both inside and outside. Wi-fi is pretty good too but does not extend outside well. There are outlets for laptop working but only in select areas. Got a deliciously gingery chai here. Most of the chai I get at coffeeshops is not strong enough in flavor and too sugary but that wasn't the case here. I was pleasantly surprised. I also got the cheesy potato danish and omg it is so good! I stayed here working almost all day and was happy to see a lot of vegetarian options. I got a mushroom pizzetta and brussel sprouts for lunch. The pizzetta is deceptively named. It's really a full-on pizza and was too much for me to eat on my own but bigger portions always beats getting something smaller than expected. The brussel sprouts were TOO salty though. I would not get that again. Service is great, the people here are so nice, bathrooms are well maintained and there are always cute doggos hanging around. My only caveats are that the coffee shop music can be a little loud and the sun can really beat down mid day if you sit along the windows (but hey, you wouldn't get the gorgeous bright lighting otherwise) read more

The food was excellent and the service great. Super busy on Saturday at 10:30am, but managed to get a seat outside with 3 kids. Overall, I liked this place a lot. The only caveat is more of a recommendation than criticism. If you are handing out numbers and order coffee with your breakfast, it should be delivered to your table with the meal. Instead, I had no idea and after 20 minutes, asked and was told my coffee was sitting on the counter, for about 10 of those 20 minutes. Expect delays in food delivery that can go as far as 20 minutes when delivered, but again, overall and excellent place with solid food and service. Trendy, yummy, and overall so many GOOD VIBES! Love this spot and all that it has to offer! So many yummy options on the menu and they are SOOO much more than your average coffee shop! They have WINE and BEER and other cocktails! What's not too love! I came here to get some work done, and had to wait a little bit to get a table, it seems like it is quite the popular study spot. After wanting to come here for many months, I finally made a point to go out my way to visit. The spot is visually beautiful -- the decor is minimal, clean, and modern. I love the fact that they have a flower shop attached and a cute store next door. Overall they have a phenomenal spot on the corner of the street. Now for food and coffee: It was good, but I wanted more. I was itching to try the black sesame coffee which I would definitely get again, but even with this being said it lacked in sweetness and could be better. Their donuts were amazing, but I've had the same ones at other locations because they are outsourced! The maple is my absolute favorite. I got the plant-based frittata sandwich which was all vegan and it was pretty delicious as well, but I wish the presentation was a bit nicer, as it looked like it had just been lazily thrown together and was falling apart. I also wish some of the mushroom inside were smaller because it was a bit texturally overpowering!! For $12.50, you would also think it would be a bit bigger, or maybe come with something on the side. I also got to try the peach ricotta toast, which again was good, but I'm not sure if it was $13 good. Essentially, I don't know if the food and coffee was good enough to excuse the prices. I was kind of left wanting something more? Service was a bit subpar. I wish they had been a bit friendlier, everyone kind of seemed to be phoning it in and didn't seem very happy. It was also kind of slow as well. I also love that they are dog-friendly, but wish they enforced that dogs don't jump up to areas where they are serving drinks/food. I saw a large dog jump up and place its paws where they served coffee. I don't mind, but I imagine for people with allergies that could pose an issue when it actually gets near their food. TLDR - I do think they have a good thing going for them. They have a unique menu with some great items, and a beautiful and aesthetically gorgeous spot, but I think this spot could be amplified for sure. With better service, and more reasonable pricing, and maybe some more care into the execution of the items, I could see this becoming a favorite. I will be back to give it another shot and hope to be impressed, there's so much potential here! read more

I've been here several times at this point. Communal is the heart of the Tremont collective. It has gifts, food, coffee, cafe items, alcohol, greeting cards & flowers. It's a vibe as the kids say. Cute Oside stuff- shirts, glassware, stickers. Main attraction is the coffee shop but I find myself buying beautiful bouquets of flowers here a few times a month. One of the trendiest spots in Oceanside - situated on a backstreet, this shop can have a line down the street on a Sunday morning (we know... we waited in it). They are dog friendly and were casual about people bringing their dogs inside. There is plenty of seating indoors and out - despite being very busy. We found parking fairly easily on the street, though I'd imagine it could be more difficult later in the day when more of the local shops are opened for lunch, etc. I waited in line for about 15 minutes, ordered our drinks and coffee, then waited 5 minutes for my drinks, 20 minutes for my food. Something I've learned about California - it always takes so long to get food! I enjoyed peaking through the retail selections while I waited in line and enjoyed the smell of the fresh flower bouquet on the table, placed there by the shop next door. A lot of college students here + young adults. A mix of hip + surf vibes. The salmon spread bagel was awesome! Our lattes were good, as well. read more
