I hate to sound redundant or cliché, but wow this place is amazing. We've lived in Provo for a whole year and just now ventured into this restaurant, and boy did it deliver. Everything we had was flavorful and packed a real punch. The food is served family style so we ordered a few things to share & still had some leftovers to take home. We ordered the pork belly starter, the Miso flank steak and the poblano mashed potatoes. Let me tell you, I still dream about those mashed potatoes! The pork belly was crispy and full of flavor, the sauce it's served with is so good I distinctly remember telling my husband if they gave me a bowl of just that sauce I would drink it by itself. The miso flank steak is cooked to your preference (we did medium well), the miso glaze is sweet & salty and definitely gives the beef that extra kick you didn't know it needed, but now can't live without. Our waitress was kind and funny, very helpful when explaining the menu to us newbies. The wine selection is great & they also serve seasonal craft beers by local breweries. 100% adding this place to our regular favorites list. read more

I give this place 5 stars because the food was so good I couldn't stop commenting on how good it was. The menu was unique, and the ambiance is classy and hip. However, were there on a Friday night and our party of four was told the wait would be 45 minutes, and was actually an hour and 15 minutes. This was irritating because there was a huge party in there and had finally finished and stood up to leave, but then stood around chatting right in the middle of this tiny restaurant with no respect for those waiting to clean up their table, or others waiting to be seated. Meanwhile, nobody in the staff did anything to encourage /ask this large group to step outside to continue chatty hour. read more

Sat at bar with view of kitchen, which is always a nice experience. Cocktails weren't bad, but on the weak side. Wine pours were a little light too. Pork belly was fine, but just fried crispy, and tasted like bacon. Couscous risotto was good, but very under seasoned. Heard a lot about this place and had visitors, so we wanted to impress by taking to Communal. Big mistake--huge! Lousy parking of course. Expected. I ordered perhaps the worst, most tasteless hamburger I ever had. No ketchup to remedy the situation. Guest ordered the sandwich of the day--barbecue. Ate half then covered with napkin and pushed plate away. Courteous staff, good looking clientele but exorbitant prices. No thanks. read more

Excellent food, and although the three dollar signs cost is not misleading, the portions are HUGE. We sat at the bar overlooking the cooks and the amount of care they take is obvious. Loved the pace of service---different people stopping by which was super attentive, friendly, informal and allowed us to order and eat at a perfect pace. I love this place for brunch. The flavours are so good. It's so hard to choose so bring a big group and order as much as you can so you can try everything. I haven't had anything here I didn't love. Absolutely fabulous from our server's gracious guidance to the cuisine. Visiting Moab for one night and we couldn't have picked a better oasis. Grilled fish, snow peas and asparagus were awesome. Hubby had the burger. Finished off with chai. Perfect. read more

My friend and I met for dinner at Communal Restaurant in Provo. Communal offers a shared plate style dining experience. We both had a curry-based soup. My friend described the soup as very rich (I agree) while reminding me of South Africans' love of curry (He's originally South African). For an entrée, I ordered the local trout with fennel jam, radish, and citrus honey. My friend ordered the paprika roasted chicken with french green lentils and grilled asparagus spears. Given the shared style, we both had a bit of each. For a side, I ordered the barley risotto with chive and parmesan. Unfortunately, we were brought the yellow french polenta with local cheddar, swiss chard, and salsify. Once informed of their mistake, they brought out the barley and gave us the polenta on the house, as it should have been. For dessert, he ordered butterscotch creme brûlée with salted caramel sauce. I ordered their chocolate-hazelnut mousse. Portion sizes at Communal are large and are best shared with others at your table. We were left with a substantial amount of leftovers. Communal's forte seems to be large business dinners and dates. However, I think it is suitable for well-behaved families if Provoites and the other kind people of Utah County can bring themselves to take their families to something beyond Café Rio, Costa Vida, Outback, or you get the picture. Sorry, I couldn't resist. Prices are relatively high for the area, but reasonable in my view given the generous portions. read more

Excellent meal at Communal on Saturday evening. Luckily we had seen other reviews on Yelp and made a reservation; we were quickly seated and greeted by our server. We were told it was their new spring menu and it didn't disappoint. Portions are large and most proteins are intended for two. We ordered the trout - which is not one of the "large" proteins - but for the two of us was plenty. It was perfectly cooked and delicious. Sides are all separate and also large. We had mashed potatoes -- so good thatI wanted to lick the plate - asparagus and broccolini. Both were excellent. Service is pleasant, attentive and timely. Much of the seating is at a communal table, which worked out fine for us and we had a nice conversation with the couple next to us. All in, if we are ever in Provo again, Communal is on our list. read more

Oh the irony of this restaurant having a book called Etiquette on the counter! I wonder if the staff have read it, you'd never know! First, on arrival, we were left loitering near the door while the hostess was nowhere to be seen and the kitchen staff chatted amongst themselves, clearly aware of our presence, yet ignoring us. Then we were brought our bill before the dessert had even been served, it was not yet 9 pm, were they in that much of a hurry to close? Obviously they were, because our server started sweeping the floor around my feet! We left, but not because we were ready to leave. That said, our food was lovely. We ordered the mackerel with pickled vegetables ; mashed potatoes were delicious; we ordered succotash but beans were delivered, we sent them back as weirdly my husband is allergic to beans, the succotash when it finally arrived was very tasty. We also chose the pork with peaches, it was perfectly seasoned and confit'd to perfection. The peaches would have been blanched and peeled in a great restaurant. This is a good restaurant. Shame my parting memory was being swept out instead of relishing the dessert. read more

Sorry, but you're not actually an upscale restaurant. Communal means you sit close enough to the adjacent table to almost share. Don't expect to have a private conversation. I ordered the flank steak with horseradish sauce. The flavor was good, the the steak was hard to chew. Cost $45, but probably worth only $20. Bowl of garlic mash was good, but $12 is like Ruth's Chris pricing. This is not RC. Also had Grilled Pear Salad. It was mediocre. It's crazy how you Utahan's rank your food. My experience my be from the fact that I'm from Vegas we're they have some of the best food in the world. But I definitely pay less for much better food there. read more

We had their charcuterie plate and broccoli soup to start off. The broccoli soup was delicious. The charcuterie plate was good although I can honestly say that I've had better. For dinner we had the skirt stake, chicken pot pie, mashed potatoes, Brussels sprouts and cornbread with jalapeño butter. The skirt stake was really great although I have to say that out of the two proteins we choose the chicken pot pie was probably my favorite. It had so much flavor and the biscuit on top was definitely the best part. The mashed potatoes were cooked to perfection. I highly recommend them to anyone. The cornbread and jalapeño butter were both very good. Overall it was a great experience and I would definitely go again. read more

I just visited Communal for the first time on a business trip a few weeks ago. Here are three things you need to know about Communal... 1. The food and service were top notch! A variety of options on the menu, locally sourced/grown - we started with mussels for an app, the portion was huge and they were excellent. Then we tried the Spiced Beet Salad and our main course was the pork loin chop - which was the most delicious and juicy serving of pork I've ever had. 2. Communal's menu is based on a sharing concept so the portions are large. We were each going to order the pork entree until our server educated us - so glad we changed our order...the plate came with two very big pork chops - more than enough for two and I thought, very reasonably priced. 3. The rustic ambiance is comfortable and intimate but not very large so make a reservation. There is a small amount of parking in a lot at the back of the building. I get to Utah at least once a month from Chicago and I've always been impressed with the quality of dining options in Provo - Communal is another great one to add to my list. read more

I have been to communal twice now and I am a believer! Communal focuses on providing good food and facilitating a culinary experience for the customer. The waiter is definitely more involved in the experience in the fact that they take the time to explain the food, tell us where the meat and other ingredients came from, how they made it, etc. I personally love that they do this. Communal has an upscale farm grill feel. They get all major ingredients from local Utah farms, which brings an added sense of freshness to the meal. The menu itself has a trendy American theme, utilizing ingredients to make the dish a little more edgy than your traditional American meal. I would highly recommend the flat iron steak, the gnocchi, and the asparagus. If you have never been here, the portion sizes are big, and meant to be shared with another person. I would suggest getting a starter, a protein plate, a starch plate, and a vegetable plate. So I wanted to give five stars, but there were a few things about our experience that holds them back. First is the napkins. They leave lint all over your pants, which is odd for an upscale restaurant. Second is the rolls. Out of all the yummy things communal makes, their rolls just aren't that great. Last of all, the second time we went we found ourselves telling our guest that the meat was cooked much better the time before. A little bit more consistency is necessary. If communal wasn't so upscale, I probably wouldn't care about these things as much. read more

What a wonderful treat amongst the madness of downtown Provo. Although the dining space is small and gets pretty loud if busy, the ambience is quite nice. The menu items we selected were plated beautifully and had some unique but delightful tastes to them. The shoots in the Salad we ordered were grown locally in Spanish Fork, and were seriously almost too pretty to eat! How cool of this restaurant to support local farmers! The wait staff was prompt and attentive, and our water cups never went dry. If $$$ is no issue and you are looking for something a little fancier, you must try Communal! read more

Had to make a last minute trip to Utah for family but wanted to catch up with a friend so we did a search for brunch options near Provo and Communal popped up.. so glad it did. It's a small little place with a limited menu (great for indecisive people like me) and a family feel. I had a fried chicken dish that was amazing. Our friend had the French toast and loved it. The coffee was fantastic as well. The bruleed grapefruit was insanely good. I find myself dreaming about it. Even better, the service was every bit as great as the food. Our server was friendly and attentive. Can't wait to go again the next time we visit family. read more

My wife and I came here for our anniversary dinner and were really impressed. We ordered the funeral potato croquette, charred broccolini, and agnolotti pasta, and by a happy accident, were given the snuck farm greens. Everything was delicious, well prepared and presented. The flavors were well thought out from the hint of honey in the snuck farms greens to the chive olive oil around the croquette. The chefs know what they're doing. It wasn't very busy when we went (Tuesday evening at 5:30) so everything was prepared quite promptly with enough room in between the appetizer and entree. For the average couple, three items (a to start item, a proteins item, and a starch/vegetables item) is plenty to have you leave satisfied. The waitress was very nice and helpful explaining things on the menu. After finding out it was our anniversary, she even gave us a dessert to take home with our leftovers. I love Communal because it feels like a little slice of home in the middle of Utah Valley to me. If you've been wanting to check this place out but you're on a budget, try stopping in for brunch (Saturdays only) or lunch. Pricing during those meals are comparable to other downtown spots. Dinner is where it starts to get spendy. For brunch with my girls, we love the bruléed grapefruit and then something hearty. We all got savory plates with meat and biscuits last time and everything was so good. For lunch, I'll do a salad with chicken or salmon added in or one of their burgers or sandwiches. If that have it in, try the Reuben. They corn their own beef and it's so good. read more

Communal literally is just that. You will be sitting at a table with strangers unless your timing enables a private table. The place is very small so your reservation is dependent upon prior patrons not lingering forever after dinner during popular dining times. The food is locally sourced and, while mostly pretty simple, does have a few twists that are intriguing. Basic roasted squash is elevated by pesto and pecorino. Halibut is garnished with crispy leeks that actually add some depth. Missteps include gritty, sandy chard and their aforementioned but not fully their fault...inability to keep reservation times. However, the staff is friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the food and beverages. Portions are large. Sides easily serve two or three and mains are quite shareable. Three of us ate two veg and one protein. With beverages that was plenty. We kind of wanted dessert but the choices of the evening didn't compel us. Simple, probably super tasty had we been in the mood (apple crumble or chocolate mousse or a cheese, chocolate and honey plate). Not expensive at all given the big portions. Alcohol is reasonably priced. Corkage is $15 if you bring your own. Best food I've eaten in Provo. Convenient to the convention center and historic downtown locations. Surface parking and a city parking structure are very convenient to the restaurant. read more
