On a Thursday night, last minute decision. We went to Communal for a dinner. We saw there were a few tables empty, so we assumed we should be able to eat there even though we didn't make a reservation. And the manager come to my husband and said there was no table left, they are fully booked. He told my husband, that he prefers we do a reservation online before we come. And he continue said that "We don't serve alcohol here. If you still want to eat here, maybe come back more than an hour, which is around 9 pm. We may have a table for you. We don't need to write down your name or phone number." He was rude and had a very bad attitude. There was a family of three, who went there at the same time, with no reservation as well. But they let them in to eat for a couple of minutes to wait. It was 7:30 p.m. From his attitude, I feel something really wrong. Then I used my iPhone to go online to see if we have a chance to reserve a table. Please check the image I uploaded to this comment. There is plenty of opening, from 8:15 pm onward every 15 minutes. Then I call him and asked him why his reservation table is totally different from the online reservation system, and why he would try to insult my husband by telling him they don't serve alcohol. My husband has no intention to drink any alcoholic beverage. Then he tried to settle down the who situation, by offering me there is a table for me right away. True to its name, the best way to have an awesome experience here is to bring a friend or two and order multiple dishes and share them. My wife and I went to Communal for dinner for the first time this past weekend, and our experience was fabulous. The menu is a la carte, but the entrees are all shared, so the cost is reasonable for fine dining. I think our check came to between $90 and $100. Our meal: - Drink: Coconut cream tea. They bring out your own small pot with cream to add yourself. This was excellent! My wife asked where they bought it so that she could buy it themselves. - Appetizer: Butternut squash soup. Probably the best I've had. The toasted seeds added a nice contrast to the smoothness of the soup. Sweet, but not too sweet. - Entree: Skirt steak (medium). This was very good, seasoned and cooked just right with a delicious green sauce - Starch: Fried funeral potatoes. The waitress recommended this as an appetizer, so we substituted it for our starch. This was our least favorite choice. It wasn't bad, but it didn't match the fineness of the rest of our meal. The sour cream was a bit strong. - Vegetable: Roasted brussels sprouts. The brussels sprouts were roasted to a crisp perfection with a balsamic glaze. These were incredible. While our entire meal was excellent, this was the best part for us. - Dessert: Butterscotch pudding. This was good, but unnecessary. My wife only ate a few bites, but I liked it. It has chunks of cookie in it that gives it a little texture. Our waitress was fantastic, and the ambiance was very good. As I drove to Communal, I started writing the glowing review in my head. "Communal is a place that should be shared..." "Communal is just what this community needed." Alas, the before eating (imagined) version and after eating (reality) version don't quite gel. It's a little bit pointless to go over exactly what we ate because the menu is ever evolving. I like that. I like that they use fresh, sustainable, local ingredients whenever possible. I like the decor - funky, eclectic, conscious, super clean, attractive. I like that the chef is present. Well...there are negatives to that too. So, I want to address our esteemed chef. This is what I want you to know about my dining experience tonight: I do like, Chef, that you have a lovely open kitchen that allows me to smell the butter browning and the steak sizzling. Just please bear in mind that open applies to smells and sounds. Chef, I don't want to overhear that you think the table that just left contained a jerk. Are you going to think I'm a jerk if I don't love your food as much as you do? I don't want to hear you say that you thought we were still on our salad course while we were awaiting dessert (and had specifically ordered it ahead of time because we had an appointment to make). I don't really care that you lost track. That happens in this business from time to time. I get that. As the customer though, I don't want to know about it. I do like that our server was attentive and made sure our glasses were always full of PH balanced water. I don't like that he put his hands (the ones that have been touching all manner of things) directly into garnish that he then put on my dinner. I do like that my salad contained perfect spinach leaves, not a hint of anything less than fresh as can be. I didn't like that my salad was so underdressed that the flavor of the vinegar-based dressing only came through in one or two bites. I don't like that my tri-tip was on the tough side. I know it's tri-tip, but for the portion you gave me at the price you gave me, I expected it to be perfect. It wasn't. And the sauce (like the dressing above) was very skimpy. I don't mean that it should have been drowning. I mean that I should have been able to taste it above the flavor of the meat beyond the very first bite. I like that your ingredients are well thought out, cohesive, and selected with care. I like that the asparagus with aioli was spot-on perfect. I like that you left me with a good dessert. Good dessert forgives many sins in the restaurant world. Overall, it was clear that everything was executed with thought and care. That being said, I'd only go back in a group with the aim of seeing if tonight was a fluke and Communal is the good egg it's cracked up to be. I always say that my preferred places to eat are those that serve food that is laborious to prepare and/or contains hard-to-find ingredients. Communal delivers the former (and I think they think they deliver the latter but we're lucky and have good sources for great products). Although the detailed elements (the mandolin sliced veg, the sauce on my steak, the poached egg on my salad, the mashed potatoes made with a ricer) were time-consuming, they weren't as perfect as they could have been. I think that's a shame because for the cost of dinner, and for the sake of dining, they should be. So, Chef, I leave you with this heart-felt advice: Communal has gained a stellar reputation because it's one of the best Utah County has to offer. But, Chef, you worked at Sundance - you know Utah County is not known for it's fine dining. Compete on a higher level. I know the appropriate amount of sauce on an item is a matter of opinion, but I invite you to consider mine: You put a lot of time and effort into making those beautiful sauces. Make sure that when you put them on the plate, there's enough for the diner to relish them, to feel the luxury of them. Because if you do not, you won't earn the repeat business of diners who see and feel that your potential isn't fully being realized. And that would be a shame because you clearly have so much to offer. Bottom line: Communal is good, but it's not amazing. I would never say stay away, but I couldn't recommend it wholeheartedly. A pretentious little place in the heart of Provo. The food is, acceptable. You had better not be too hungry. The portions are tiny. We burst out laughing when our $30 piece of pork came out. It was so tiny! The half chicken must have been a chick it was so small. The pork had a good flavor. Slightly burnt (crisp) on the bottom. A bit too much fat however for such a pricy tidbit. The chicken, ugh, it was bland. The atmosphere and decor are wonderful although I'm not a fan of seeing the kitchen staff drinking a coke in the open kitchen while I'm eating. It has lots of charm and the location is perfect. The seating is limited and it's a little weird to wait in the back of the place for a table while watching the dishwasher do his job. Parking is plentiful along the street and at the Wells Fargo parking garage. There is a small lot behind the place, but the old "We will tow" sign from Goldsmith Jewelers might scare off some. That sign should either come down or be updated. I wasn't moved to want to return anytime soon. For the two of us we paid over $80 and went away hungry. We skipped desert mostly because I could picture in my mind a petite four sized Carrot Cake or Chocolate Layer Cake being placed in front of me. read more

The service here has TANKED. We go to Communal once a week at least. We usually love the food. But every week, the service has gotten worse. They look down on you if you're not a hipster like them about alcohol or coffee. They will ignore you if they don't think you're cool. I haven't encountered that since High School. Here's a recent example, and the reason that we won't be returning for a long time, if ever: One of us ordered the steak, $18. The cook was new and accidentally put the wrong sauces on it. And the server FLIPPED out at him. She normally acts like it's beneath her to be bringing our food. Anyway, after causing a huge ridiculous scene, she realized that we were quite close (at the bar), she kind of slipped the steak on front of us without a word, and left. As if she were sneaking it on us. And none of the other staff, who we know recognized us, approached us. Absolute crap service. We've even talked to management before but nothing has changed. It's funny going to Provo and actually finding decent food. Communal is good, probably the best you'll find anywhere in the area. It even rivals some L.A. places with the same sort of theme -- local, sustainable, (etc etc) food. The space is appropriately sized, with a few bar stools to get up close and personal with the cooks (which I highly recommend and if I went back again I would definitely do), the large communal table, a few side tables for introverts (ha), and the private dining area where my party of 7 sat. Everyone who works here actually knows what they are talking about. This is even hard to find in L.A. They also don't bullshit. Our waiter/manager man straight up told us that ordering anything over medium rare is ridiculous, which I completely agree with and was glad he felt that way! We decided since our party was so large and it was our first time here that we would get (almost) the entire menu. I was a little bummed no one wanted to try either of the appetizers, one was a tomato salad with wax beans and onions, while another had a house-made pickle (my weakness at the moment) and goat cheese bread pudding (yeah... so sad we didn't try these!). But it's ok, because we got enough to feed an army.... They were filled to the brim with people (to a point it was hard to move around with seats being in the way). First, let me start by saying that I am from Atlanta and I am only visiting for a week for work. I came across this place ONLY because of the existing reviews on Yelp. Walking in, I was immediately greeted by the hostess. Because I was by myself I was seated right away. I sat at the bar area. My server, GIBSON, was phenomenal. He was kind, warm, and very attentive. He asked if I ever ate there before and of course I said no. He recommended getting half portions for my sides. Keep in mind that Communal is a the type of restaurant that serves large portions encouraging people to share, hence the name. While I was waiting for my food I was observing the cooks prepare the food. It was like watching a flawless and organized operations. They had a cook to cook all the meats, a cook for the sides and a kitchen facilitator. It was very impressive! They were pushing out food and everything is cooked to every order. I ordered the pork chops ($32), gold mashed potatoes, and the squash. Omgee, I died and went to heaven. The pork chops may seem pricey, but it is definitely worth every penny. PROVO, UT: Delighted to find solid New American fare in Provo! Came in for business and was delighted to find Communal. They seated us and had great service, even right before closing, and provided some excellent food. It's farm-to-tableish food prepped fresh and he menu changes fairly often. Here are the highlights: Risotto Starter (5 stars): I normally don't like brown rice, but this was wonderful. Never seen a risotto without white rice. We were surprised and delighted. New York Strip (4.5 stars): This was a good steak, the black mole was delicious, I enjoyed it. Creamed Corn (5+ stars): This was heavenly!! Creamed corn with cayenne and cheese; wow. Definitely the highlight for me. Ratatouille (3 stars): I'm indifferent towards summer squash, and this was prepared beautifully but not that tasty. Butterscotch Pudding (4 stars): It was tasty, served in a mason jar and had a nice mixture of chocolate cookie crust and pudding. I look forward to returning! read more

If you are a foodie, Communal is the place for you: amazing, local, sustainable, inventive, slow food, impeccable service. I've eaten at Communal many times for dinner and have been thoroughly impressed by every meal. The idea is that Communal is like Sunday dinner; It's expected that you'll share the intimate dining space, as if you are a family. I can't get over the food. It's delicious, American fusion cuisine that owes its roots to Alice Waters and the California-driven slow food movement. Produce comes from local farmers, cheeses too--if they're not made in-house. The menu is seasonal, so expect something different every time you go. The menu is ala carte, perfect for picky eaters. My suggestion is to pick a few items and share them (again, the family-style theme) with your group. The servings are comfortably shared. I noticed a private dining room in the back with a window to the kitchen. Speaking of the kitchen, it's out in the open, with some bar seating, so you can watch rockstar chefs Joseph and Colton do their thing. Communal is fine dining that isn't stuffy. You're OK to show up in jeans, but know that you're getting a really great fine dining experience. Observe your table manners in the modern, yet gorgeously renovated turn of the 20th century building. If you're looking for a heap of food on a plate, Communal is not your joint. This is not value food, it's dining. Reservations are a MUST, especially with groups. This isn't the place for a group of 25, stick with 8 or less as the dining room is small. read more

I want to love it more, I really do. The ambiance is comfortable and attractive. The food has the cred of a nicely designed gallery that I want to love. The menu is innovative, and I recommend it to everyone as one of the necessary Utah Valley destinations. I just wish that the food worked for me more. The concept works but for some reason the food hasn't yet hooked me. For example, i love that dessert portions are smallish and appropriately sized. But the flavor should be more integrated and create an overall synthesis. For some reason, they fall a little flat each time--like an undergrad paper that has lots of Thesaurus-found words, weighty ideas, and all the right works cited--but can't pull off the overall argument. We had a truly mediocre experience here. Arrived (with reservations) for late lunch at 1:30PM. Food did not arrive until about 50 minutes later The tomato and advocado sandwich had one slice of tomato with no taste, LOTS of sprouts for volume, NO advocado (the mayo was slightly green, so they may have mixed a scrap in). They tried to substitute tomato basil for the squash soup we ordered but we insisted on what we ordered. The waitress petulantly said "Well we will have to make it." Why did she think while we waited the first time for almost an hour? Others have told me they have had good experiences here. Definitely was not the case for us. We called the manager after leaving. We were embarrassed because based upon recommendations of others we had invited my son's in-laws to lunch. The manager said "Well there is just no excuse", but did not try to make things right. A mandatory 18% tip was added to the bill (there were 6 of us). I don't mind tipping, but this was a pretty awful experience. This was the day of BYU graduation, which brings a lot of people to town. Really disappointed in Communal last night. Have been before and much enjoyed. Was with a friend and we were asked to finish up while I still had food on my plate. I've never had that happen anywhere before. It had been just over an hour, we had ordered an appetizer and main dishes. We were brought our bill before being asked if we wanted dessert, and then when the waitress came over I thought she was going to take my plate so I explained I still wanted to finish the few bites left--well that wasn't why she came, but rather to tell us to please finish soon as the next reservation was ready for our table. I wish they would have told us when seating that we had a limited amount of time, as we would have chosen the bar or elsewhere to enjoy a relaxed dinner. Sadly, whenever I have returned to Utah county to visit, dining options have continued to be so... disappointing. Communal differs from that. Food was quite good (we had the cheese sampler, salmon, and short ribs), and they have a decent beer/wine selection - which I appreciate very much being in downtown provo and all! Ran in here last week and highly recommend you only come if you have 4-5 people with you and order the entire menu. It's completely hit or miss across the entrees, starches and vegetables. This "precious-food" spot is probably some of the only inspired food you can get within 30 miles. The folks at Communal have definitely made an effort to develop a pretty cool atmosphere with a menu rich in local, sustainable products - commendable. Here's my recollection of the grub: -Christiansen Farms Berkshire Pork - (A+) get it and don't look back, perfectly cooked and moist -Grilled Hanger Steak (D+) if this was the only think I ordered, I would have given Communal one-star - crap -Heritage Valley Chicken Breast (B) good -Duck Confit (B+) a little dry in spots, but incredibly flavorful -Wild Sockeye Salmon (A) awesome - even by Northwest standards If you can only get two entrees, grab the pork and salmon and be sure to try the creamed corn - honestly can't remember the rest of meal. Overall good, although not as good as I had hoped for. We tried Communal on the recommendation of a friend. We like to try all ranges of restaurants all over the country and always count new experiences as a good thing. Following that principal, this place was worth going to, though we will not be returning. The hostess was pleasant, though she seated us at a table upon which one of the waiters was leaning. He was having a long discussion with a patron he obviously knew, all the while seated on the edge of our table. We sat there for a full five minutes before he ended his visit and finally moved his derriere off of our table. Not a very professional first impression, but we have had worse, and we were there for the food. A world of wrongs can be forgiven for great food. Our waitress was very nice, and we quickly ordered several dishes. Everything is labeled as Family Style, which is fine by us, but the portions were small enough that there isn't much to share when it arrives. Don't get me wrong, I am fine with small portions, just odd that they are presented for sharing. The Fennel Tart was actually very good. The flavors balanced and came alive in your mouth. We could have eaten that all night and been very pleased. The Artichoke was then a let down. It tasted (and looked) like it had been slapped on a grill, then covered in spaghetti sauce and some cheese. Not the caliber that I was expecting. The highlight of the night was the Celery Root Gratin. Delicate, flavorful, it was a joy to taste. It was muddled, however, by being undercooked. It came with a spoon to serve with, but it was still tough to the point of needing a very sharp knife to cut it. The Pork Confit was very tender, though fairly bland. It was served with a Tomatillo sauce that was good, but didn't work with the meat. Last, the Potatoes Burgonese (or something like that) were decent, although they had a strong enough flavor that they somewhat overpowered the pork, and definitely overpowered the Gratin. Most restaurants that strive for this level of Culinary Artistry do not make you mix and match your entries and sides, specifically because the Art demands that everything served together must go together. Everything on the plate comes together in the masterpiece to make the experience complete. Communal misses that entire idea, and for lack of that key element falls short. Add to that the multiple mistakes that I would not expect to see in a restaurant striving for this level, and I have to say that Communal is thoroughly mediocre in the class they wish to attain. read more

We moved to Utah twelve years ago and Communal has been one of our favorite Provo restaurants ever since. Their menu is always outstanding. The wine pairings they've offered have always resonated with our palates. I cant say enough good things about this place. The food is just outstanding. The location is small, so seating is at a premium. The menu is limited but the choices dont seem to be a burden. Everything tastes so good and the dishes are different enough that you are inclined to try something new. I had a large party (15). I called ahead, made a reservation and pre-ordered the menu just to make it easier on my guests. Wow! This place delivered. They timed the food perfectly. My guests were just blown away. I highly recommend that strategy is you have six or more people and can plan ahead. I also think it would be a good date night strategy as well. I travel a lot to some places with hundreds of good restaraunts. This place is in my top 25 nationwide. I will go back next time I am in Provo. read more

Communal was a very nice surprise while I was in the Provo area. Our group started with the bbq chips with dip, and can I say WOW! I would eat these everyday if I could. They are thin, crispy, and full of flavor and come with an amazing dip. I had the smoked turkey sandwich with fries and it was absolutely delicious. It was so full of flavor while remaining to be a simple, healthy sandwich. Only complaint was that it could use a little more spread and the bacon was a little bit on the burnt side. Also - their drinks were delightful. Everyone tried something and enjoyed it. I had the fresh lime which is Mexican sprite, lime, and mint. It was a delicious drink that I will definitely try to make at home. It was soooo refreshing and the Mexican Sprite gave is such a unique and better flavor. What I loved about their drinks is that they used fresh ingredients and made their syrups and flavorings from scratch. And last but not least, dessert. We debated on getting it and one of the members in our group made an executive decision to order two. Wow, am I glad he did! We had the butterscotch pudding and it was soooo tasty with the perfect amount salty and sweet. If you don't have room, take one to go! I wish I was in the Prove area more so that I could enjoy this gem!! Whenever I go to a restaurant that says they are Farm to Table, I just hope they can compare to Communal! We had amazing service, the atmosphere was awesome, and the food was great. What more could you want? One last note, I almost forgot! Many people from our table had the house smoked sausage and they raved that it was the best they ever had. If/when I ever go back, it will be the first thing on my list to order. read more

Absolutely wonderful! I went for Saturday brunch, I had the chorizo hash and it was DELICIOUS! They don't have it on their menu, but they have $5 Mimosas which were fantastic. Communal is great. I've never been disappointed with a meal from them, and I have been for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Their desserts are delicious, too. Communal is the home cooking you wish you grew up with. They use super fresh local ingredients to create unique dishes. The service is great and the staff is very knowledgeable. They say entrees are big enough to share well no they are not. We ordered the chicken. 3 pieces in a bowl (1/2breast, thigh and what looks like a peg leg). Very good tasting pieces, but worth the $28? No not really. Server suggested appetizer a couple of sides so we got a charcuterie board ($23) mashed potatoes ($9) and broccoli rab another 9 bucks. They offer canned beer and wine-no liquor. The sides were definitely shareable in size. Two of us with 3 beers $123.00 (incl added 20% tip). Flavors were great. Serving was outstanding. Do not expect the value score to be high. As long as you know the cost, the flavor is there. read more

I will be traveling to Utah County from Boston frequently for work and I stayed in Provo for the first time and this is definitely one of the stand outs here and would be in any city. Communal is in a handsome brick building and features a beautifully appointed space with lots of windows, modern and warm decor. Loved the dark stain on the white pine/light wood floor. Love the local farm to table aspect and the menu was the right size with many tempting options. I found the staff to be friendly and Lee the server was attentive, helpful and very pleasant. I was alone so I sat at the bar and got to watch the chefs in action. They were quite friendly and willing to talk prep; we got to talking about Brussels sprouts (I had the side of sauteed sprouts and apples with toasted almonds in a cider reduction sauce - YUM), and he whipped up some deep fried Brussels sprout leaves that were a crispy, oily, but green and good for you snack! I went with the pork special of the evening (they butcher their own pigs and feature different cuts over time) which was wrapped in bacon, roasted and then sauteed with a teriyaki sauce. I followed that with affogato (espresso poured over ice cream). The meal, service and decor all rocked. The wines were so excellently priced. Given the restaurant's name, plates are meant to be shared and portions are family style. You need to order sides to accompany the sides as it is just protein. As such, my dinner doubled as my lunch the next day (I had the best lunch in the office). read more
