Community Thrift is one of the few places that will do donation pickup. You submit an online description and photo of your items, and they respond very responsibly. I wasn't able to use them because my piece of furniture was too large for two workers, but these guys are legit! read more

Still a great spot as I've been going there for over two decades, always variety, and always reasonable prices. I think they're vinyl is really reasonable as well as their shoes, admin pants and shirts. The women's clothes seem to be pretty good too as there's a huge inventory, and there's always lots of turnover, they obviously have a lot of product that they are moving so I love the fact you can go in there and get some good stuff and not get ripped off which is rare nowadays as San Francisco is definitely a rip off all around last time I checked I think the English translation for San Francisco is rip off. Honestly, it's an okay store. I stopped by to check out if they had any cute items. They did, but I was immediately driven away from spending money when I saw the shirt was linked to the rack. Imagine a jump rope wire put through the bottom of a shirt and out of the top of the shirt. (Except it's a security device.) I understand it's to prevent stealing but i couldn't get a size understanding of any of the objects. I felt very unwelcome. $20 for a normal used shirt. read more

Probably the last time I'll donate here. Last year I didn't have a problem but this year was different. My job had a big clothing drive and we wanted to drop off here. After I arrived I was snidely told they have a donation limit for the day and while they didn't think they would hit it they could only take half of my items meanwhile other folks were dropping off items around me. I told one of the dock workers I had two cars worth of items and they could've informed me when I dropped off the first set of items there was a limit. read more

High prices-sometimes unrealistic-sometimes ridiculous! This is a thrift store-not a boutique.

We waited in a long line to get into this thrift store and we were really excited as we had heard a lot of hype about CTS. We didn't mind waiting as they only hold a certain capacity due to COVID. We appreciate this a lot as we are high risk individuals and any extra steps to help slow the spread are greatly appreciated. When you get to the front of the line and are allowed in, they have you use their sanitizer and put on a pair of their gloves. (And of course you must be wearing your mask the whole time). This is all great and a really good setup for COVID. Inside the store everything is set up well and a wheelchair can get around quite easily, which is greatly appreciated. As for their items for sale I feel that everything was quite overpriced. They have a good amount of books, china, records, clothes, shoes, bags, and jewelry. It was just disappointing to see the prices on everything. When thrifting I'm looking for good deals and it was hard to find this here. One employee was quite stark with me but I'm ok with that, I just wish they were a little kinder. I'm not sure I'll be visiting again but it was a nice trip. If you're looking for deals I wouldn't suggest CTS, but if you are ok with paying a little more on your thrifting experience, this may be your place! read more

What appears to be a warm-hearted thrift store could not be further from the truth. Their employees are unhelpful, and their manager, Richard, is a real dick. Worse yet, they will hold your money hostage and threaten to resell items you paid for. It's a total grift. Shop elsewhere. read more

The Community Thrift Store in the Mission District is a great thrift store. I first went here during my first visit to San Francisco way back in 2002. It was great then & is still great now. Some wonderful things here are: clothes & lots of the good stuff here so more gems than non-gems in your search books & magazines, nice selection of each of various titles & subjects posters, all sorts of posters from old movie posters to Stars Wars collectable ones electronics, I got a well priced excellent Sony alarm clock here that works like a charm cookware, I picked up some glass pyrex 9 by 13 baking dishes for making vegan casseroles All in all a great thrift store worth checking out if you are in San Francisco & especially worth checking out if you are in the Mission District. Bonus points, Papalote Mexican Grill has half a dozen vegan burritos & is a short walk from here so worth checking out to catch two birds w/ one hand. read more

I'm pretty meh about this place. We waited in line and they have a certain number of people that can be in the store at each time. It's basically one in one out. But if you come with two people and only one person leaves and you want to stick with your two people then the lady that checks people in says that someone is a party of one can come in by themselves. But that essentially means that if you're a party of two you have for two people to leave. It's weird and doesn't seem fair. Anyways, I thought the furniture selection would be better but it was also meh. I think you're better finding furniture on Craigslist or Facebook marketplace. read more

Finally got to drop by after quarantine closed Community Thrift for quite some time. Saw people complaining about a few things in this new situation and I would like to remind folks how thrift stores work and when you are closed for over seven months, your merch may not be as choice as usual. After all you get what you get whenever you drop by a thrift store and now that they are open again I am sure the selection will improve. I was able to find a shirt for my costume as Woo from The Big Lebowski (the guy who peed on the Dude's rug) and the setup they have is really nice with limiting capacity and requiring gloves in addition to masks. The gloves they provide and I love how CTS also supports local non-profits so you can shop and feel good about yourself too! read more

If you need books or a statement piece for your apartment, Community Thrift Store is for you! I occasionally stop by here when I'm in the Mission running errands just to browse. It's not a shop I'd go out of my way for, but perfectly great to kill some time. The most notable thing about this shop is the furniture - most of it isn't noteworthy, but each time I've dropped by I've found at least one standout piece - once, a cool side-table and another time a 19th century trunk (in good condition). I usually prefer the Alameda Antiques Faire for vintage decor, but the (rare) pieces I've seen here are better quality (and of course, more expensive). There are a lot of books here too - more than I've seen at any other thrift shop. There are also vintage records as well! I wouldn't bother for clothing or anything else. The clothes are overpriced and not in the best condition, and the homegoods section literally is junk (let's say I wouldn't be surprised seeing all of it in the trash...). You know those days when you have nothing to do and you suddenly get the urge to go thrifting? It was one of those days and I decided to take my 15 year old with me, to see what we could find. Community Thrift pretty much has it all. Masks are currently required to shop, but don't let that deter you from finding some really good deals!! My daughter scored two pairs of Levi's low rise jeans for $7 each, way better that Goodwill's prices of $10.99. I found the cutest teacups with matching plates, made in France, at $3.50 for each set. Anyone want to have a tea party?? This is the place to go if you're looking for supplies. This is one of my favorite thrift stores in San Francisco and if I still had that thing called "packrat disease" I'm sure I wouldn't be sharing it. Since finding some balance in my life, today I can freely talk about my experiences... In a former life I was a regular here - like every week trying to beat the other eBay sellers & packrats at the door. Fortunately we all went for other stuff, I was never big into vintage clothing or porcelains, instead would head straight to the art, stuff in the display case, and the toys. Okay 99% of the toys were actual toys or junk, but the challenge was finding that diamond in the rough. Was I successful here? You betcha. Like any business it takes knowledge to know what is worth. So yes, I studied books and value guides for years until it became ingrained in my brain - what was worth vs. worthless. I won't get into details on my "finds" here, but many times I'd find that under $5 item and turn it around 10 fold or sometimes much more. In the stock market that's a winning formula, but know it took lot's of work too. Okay, I'll share two experiences with you. The first was finding a Lowell High School year book from 1938 for $5... I simply purchased it for the history, but while rummaging through it at home I came across "Carol Channing" the legendary Broadway & Hollywood actress. The best part is that she signed it throughout. I then knew it was worth something... sold it on eBay weeks later for $125. Imagine she's still alive today at 96! The second experience was finding a $1 old book in the musky area in the backroom. Inside the book I noticed a tiny calendar used as a bookmark. I purchased the book for the asking $1. I tucked the tiny calendar on my shelf until years later I recognized the art on one of those antique shows... turns out my tiny 1932 calendar was from a print from a well known art deco artist from the era. I ended up selling this $1 investment for $650. Moral of the story? It was worth getting my hands musky. Yet, the above is getting rarer and rarer with the internet blogs and informative reality shows like American Pickers & Pawn Shop on the history channel. No longer are the collectors and sellers snobs on PBS roadshow. Yet, with all the stories you read and hear about most people are in it for fun... that groovy polyester shirt, that board game I remember when I was 12, that knickknack that reminds me of grandma. I don't shop here too often mainly because it's always a hit or miss, but do enjoy browsing the furniture and jewellery so before yesterday I would've still recommended this place. However while I was sifting through the shirts one of the blouses fell down. I already had two items in my hand so I stepped away to put them on a rack because I couldn't hang it back up with only one hand free. Before I could a short, older employee with brown hair in a ponytail walked in front of me and got kind of loud and sarcastic. They kept saying "Wow! Thank you, thank you for your mess." I didn't know how to respond before just walking away and saying in a sarcastic tone "attitude". I know from her perspective it probably looked like I just dropped the shirt with no plan to pick it up but there was also a bunch of more professional ways to handle that situation than getting loud with a customer. read more

I recently donated my old flat screen tv and a bunch of clothes here. I like that they disperse all proceeds to your charity of choice (from a list of charities they work with). The store is a hodge podge of stuff. Electronics was meh, didn't check out the clothes, but the dinnerware was very good. Furniture was cool to check out. I have been a loyal customer for years. However due to tonight's experience I'm happy I don't live closer, as to not be exposed to the employees that work here TOXIC to say the least. There was a commotion when I walked in and the guard was on her phone and rude when I asked her a question. Then a guy at the counter wanted a refund - their policy is NO REFUNDS. Ok so the white lady with the mousy hair and glasses started yelling at him "No refunds" not speak, not apologize, nothing, literally scream at him. "Look at the sign" was all she said then accused HIM of being rude. Ok I ventured back into the bowels of the store. Then when I had come up to the counter again the Chinese employee with the medium brown hair motioned for me to put a mask on. Hmmm okay 2020 - we done with Covid and thank god I had one and was grabbing it out of my pocket. Again the mousy clerk with the glasses screamed "Wear a mask!" I yelled back " I understand what you said, wear a mask" and went to the back. I don't enjoy being screamed at my anyone. No talking or even raising their voices. SCREAM. As I went out I said "Horrible customer service here" to which the security guard who was on her phone looked up and again with the screams. We get it your employees hate their jobs, the public, and specifically working in that store. Please don't scream it into everyone's face!!! No MOD monitoring. Did the world end and I missed it. Besides Great Overland Book Store - the Community Thrift Store is soon to be a regular spot for me - since giving up my cable. They have some of the most affordable books ever. Most of them running about a dollar fifty a book. Not only that, but it's impressive how well organized their library is as well. The thrift store itself didn't move me. It was organized but extremely dusty like a Grey Gardens's garage sell that was more antique than vintage. I lack either imagination or patience--nah, both--because nothing stood out to me. Luckily I wasn't there to shop but to donate. Their donation system is by far the best I've seen in SF.
