I personally don't like the layout and organization of this store, I find it to be an unpleasant and uncomfortable shopping environment. There is no dressing room and they don't except returns, I find this discouraging and disappointing. This is where you should be buying books! I accidentally walked into this store with my friends a few weeks ago and could not be happier about our find. Community Thrift Store is a large space on Valencia selling everting from women's sandals to glass vases. But the large shelves to the back of the store instantly captured our attention. Although in a slight disarray, those shelves have books of very type and style. Besides, the search your perfect read is an adventure in itself. The next selling point is, of course, the prices. For instance, today I walked out with Amy Poehler's Yes Please, Arianna Huffington's The Sleep Revolution and Stieg Larsson's The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest for less than $5! Love coming here! I found many hidden gems and there was a lot of people!! They have hand sanitizer stations in the front of the store. Sometimes the line gets really long and wrap around the store. I was lucky to find some good pieces for a good price! The workers are nice and keep the line moving at a good pace!! Will be coming back! read more

Cool ass shop! After traveling from NYC to SF with my lover, we realized we should've done more SF weather research. It's freaking cold! I mean, certainly too cold for July. We escape into this shop in search of a jacket for my lover who's shivering. We find a great selection. And a cool, retro-looking dress for me (granted with a missing button but still cool). Needless to say: he found a jacket, and absolutely loves it. The staff here was weird however. Guy at register thought he was too cool for school. Today, for a grand total of $2.64, I scored... - a statuette of a short fat Santa Claus hand-to-hand with a fat white Asian kitty ($0.50) - 12 glass ornaments in original, taped packaging ($1) - a square plate with a cartoon reindeer saying, "happy holidays" ($0.50) These finds required a bit of musty digging, but was worth it. :) Even though I'm a noob to CTS, there were some definite highlights: - book section - cheap-ish holiday finds and seasonal decor that you really won't use for more than 3 weeks (really Crate and Barrel, do I look like I can spend $80 on an ornament hanger? I work at a public school.) - accepting credit card, yay... I just don't carry much cash on me... - benefiting local charities, (definitely plus) - all the kitschy sweaters, period furniture, 80's outerwear (you DO need shoulder pads), dishware, and wicker baskets you'd ever want. There were also some "meh's": - prices were not exactly a bargain - some items were... clearly unusable (uh, non-functional dusty 8-track, anyone? wobbly 70's style school desk?) - I would pass on the: pants, shoes, electronics/ non-functional kitchen appliances (the amount of dust on them, or cracks in the plastic, should tip you off) - "vintage" clothes probably worthy of Crossroads Trading company that are markedly overpriced compared to the rest of the wares here - I could have used with less dust on many of the items... it reminded me too much of my own house :-P Like a used book store, or Macy's Clearance Center (do you remember those?? I often forget the name of this thrift store so I am glad I did a check in on Yelp this go around to make sure I can find it for the future. This is by far one of my top 3 thrift stores to go to and let me explain why. 1. Books...errrrmmaahhhgod so many books! Very fair priced books as well! They are organized in multiple different categories from women's studies to travel, foreign studies, you name it! I know that even if I haven't caught up on all my reading I will always check out the books. 2. Board games! I am a little old school in this regard, but I love the classics. Who doesn't like a dinner/drinking wine night with friends and monopoly or sorry board game? My only wish? Label that all pieces are there. 3. Clothing is on the higher end and very fairly priced as well! I always feel like when I go here to check for jeans, I find great value and awesome brands! Can't argue with that combination, as it makes thrifting that much more fun! Parking is tough! But well worth it if you can get in!! read more

Every time I am in this area, I always like to stop in this place just to look around. They have constant turn over so there is always something new in here. They have an amazing furniture section, and their clothes are always well organized. I love the community feel of this place and I really love the little price stickers on the floor. It gives this place such a fun look. Sometimes if you look through the furniture you will see the tags that have the description on them. The descriptions can be pretty funny. Overall a beautiful place to shop and look for some real gems. read more

This happened today a little before closing time: security caught an older Hispanic woman and a little girl stealing clothes and kicked them out. What was really uncomfortable about this whole situation was hearing the how the staff talked about the woman and the little girl after they left. I heard a male employee say "well I guess that's one reason to have a kid" and a female employee say "if I had a kid I would at least make it less obvious." I saw the woman and the girl on their way out: they left quietly, and they were clearly poor. I get that they were stealing, but it is still so disappointing and upsetting to hear the employees talk that way about people who look like they're struggling. read more

As far as thrift stores go, this one is one of the best. The inventory is added daily and is super organized. I have found many treasures in this store. The best thing I found was a huge suitcase in great condition that I needed for a trip at the last minute. The best thing overall about this thrift store is the book section. Who knew that a thrift store could have a huge, organized book section that is sorted by subject not unlike a bookstore! I highly recommend this thrift store to book lovers. read more

Great place to browse for furniture, books, and misc clothes (especially leather jackets). The books are organized alphabetically, the clothes are by sex and kind (dresses, jackets, etc). The shoe selection is decent, very vintage style. There was no air conditioning or fans so not ideal for a hot day. But otherwise great! read more

They take almost all donations, so if you are trying to get rid of a desk, old computer, books, clothes, they take it, some of the other donation places simply say no we can't take your computer desk there is no room haha. Here they welcome everything open arms. This thrift store varies in prices from good to a little overpriced. In my experience they don't bargain. They have vintage and somewhat modern clothing, accessories, lots of household goods, vinyl and electronics of the dated kind (8mm projectors, Polaroids). They do not have children's clothes or toys at this store, adult stuff only. It's a good place for furniture. You can even find some mid-century modern pieces (although they will most likely need refinishing or work done on them). It's always worth a pop in when you're in the Mission. read more

Ah, what a large and eclectic thrift store in the Mission. There are a ton of housewares, books, shoes, furniture, knick knacks etc. here. Their prices are labeled pretty clearly on the items which is great. The books, which ranged from fiction to whatever other genre you can think of, were mostly $1.00 which is nice. A lot of thrift stores like to charge upwards of $4 for used books - ain't nobody got money for that! The clothing was decent although most of the clothing was a bit ratty. The prices were mostly reasonable - rarely saw items over $15. Most items seemed to be in the $4-$10 range which is not too bad. I found some H&M, J. Crew, Forever21 items here. BIG MINUS: NO DRESSING ROOMS, not even a dinky one. This is really tough because they don't have a return policy so if it doesn't fit too bad. Also this place feels quite dirty so I'd wash my hands afterwards! I didn't pick up anything this time. With no dressing rooms it's a bit hard to gauge if something will fit or not sometimes. Maybe if there is a next time I will come in with a tank top. read more

Insanely reasonable prices, and the money raised through item sales goes to a number of charities. The selection of everything is typical for thrift stores - you have to want to search, but I've been there several times and never once have I been disappointed. They have a lot of kitchen stuff (utensils, pots, glasses, etc.) in particular. Decent if you have the time to go through all of the pieces I suppose. However I won't sugarcoat it, this store is a Mess (notice the capital M). Seems as if they put out absolutely every piece they receive which can be positive, but in this case I think it just made clutter. Some of the nicer clothing items were "locked up" which gave a fancy feel but to be honest, I didn't see a single thing I would consider to be amazing. Lots of books and tons of housewear. Not the place to go if you're looking for clothes but if you have the patience to go through all of the other items I'm almost positive you'll find something. Overall not the best experience mostly because of the selective options of clothes for me but if that's not your main objective, this may be your favorite thrift shop. In my opinion, not that organized and not what I expected. I wouldn't say to skip going in just know what to expect. read more

I remember many moons ago when Community Thrift Store was the 'cool' second hand store in San Francisco. Sure, they we're always picky about donations (lack of space), and employees have on occasion displayed a mild disdain towards their clientele, but the prices and selections made it worth it. Sadly, current day CTS has accented its occasional rudeness with insultingly high prices. Maybe they decided to transform the business into a for-profit collectibles store overnight, rather than a well-intentioned non-profit dependent on the generous donations of others. They certainly wouldn't be the first "charity" to milk every penny out if the goods they received for free. Sometimes this strategy works, but more often than not it just pisses off their core customer base and kills foot traffic. Seriously. Why would ANY customer (even a wealthy one), choose to dig through piles of second hand clutter just to score some random overpriced item rather than finding something just as good at Harrington's, Stuff, or another high-priced retail store? The saavy ones wouldn't. Perhaps LetGo, Craigslist, NextDoor or even FB Marketplace would serve up some better options these days. Gee Whiz read more

This is my go to thrift store. I used to go to the GW on Van Ness but once that closed I discovered what a find Community Thrift was. You have to really sift through a lot of junk to find the good stuff but I almost never walk out of this place empty handed. I found two matching Mid-Century Modern end tables for $15 each here. What a deal! Great place to hunt for furniture, home decor, bags, books and coats. My only complaint is there is no changing room so I usually skip out on the clothing section since they do not allow returns if the item ends up not fitting. read more

Vey dissapointing, I have been a customer of your store for many years. I was in the store and wasn't aware of mask wearing. I support the use of masks. When I was paying for my item, a security guard, male with long braided hair came to me and said "Wear a mask" he didn't say please mam, or any polite words. He was quite agressive in his demeanor. Due to to his agressiveness I said, "I'm paying and leaving, so I won't wear a mask" (I thought I would only put it on for a couple seconds that it wasn't worth it). As I'm paying, he kicked me out of the store "get out of here". I said to him "You just want to be mean to me" and left. The cashier was quite surprised by the whole thing. I'm a latin woman in my 50.'s. I went there before a social event. He was just mean and rude. I know security guards have to do their work, but we are customers and treating people kindly and respectfully is essential. He shouldn't treat people like that. He crossed the line with me. Adding to this, next to me was a customer who had his pants under his bare butt, and the security guard didn't say anything about this. He had a bad odor as well. I wish the store can do more about training it's guards and employees to deliver better customer service. No need to treat people badly. The world needs more kindness. Yesterday: My backpack strap is broken and I really needed to a new affordable backpack so I decided to check out what they had as I usually do if I walk by because you know it's thrift store and you never know what you can find While there I witnessed a man steal clothes and the staff not attempt to get their belongings back because he was a repeat offender "not worth the trouble" and he literally walked out the store Mind you I am waiting 20 minutes for my items to get repriced because I said they didn't have tags and so it's my fault they didn't have tags?! and I said something and now I have to wait until tomorrow!?! After witness a robbery!? Wow I have shopped here many, many times and this policy (re- tagging the items the next day after speaking with the manager) is so stupid- do not penalize a paying customer because your items didn't have tags Should I have said nothing This is a f****** thrift store (a good one, but stuff if given for free to you guys no¿) c'mon on community thrift I needed the backpacks (one small and one regular) I work full time work and attend school and hustle my ass off with my art and creative endeavors- so disappointed with this business today- so disappointed They said to come back around 10am after opening and well my backpack is still broken so going to have to- I just hope they stick to their word and reprice the bag because I have school today and well actually need a non broken back pack -_- read more

I usually always find something here whether it is a cute skirt, a ceramic vase, or a hidden gem of a record. This review is for their furniture donations service. Up to this point, I had been selling my old furniture or giving them away for free on CL, but it was so much emailing back and forth and dealing with flaky people. I was so glad when I found this place who would pick up used furniture for donations free of charge! I think they usually book about a month out, but I was lucky, someone cancelled and I was able to get a slot the next day. It was very easy to call them and schedule an appointment with a real person. I left a message and someone called me back right away. The driver/mover were prompt and polite. And you can choose from over 200 charities to donate to, using the proceeds from your furniture sale (should your furniture sell). Fantastic! read more

This place is very huge compared to other thrift shops nearby and it's really popping during the weekends! It has a lot of things, ranging from clothes, to furniture and random miscellaneous items (like staplers, binders, mason jars, vinyls, etc). I don't think this place was that organized though, especially their expansive book section, so definitely come here if you have some time to spare to look through everything thoroughly. I have no doubt they have some pretty good things, and all for very good prices. I just recently moved to this area and had some time to check out the thrift store! My favorite part of the store was the book section - I found so many books I've been wanting to read/thinking of purchasing. I spent a total of $5 for 5 books. :OOOOO I also found a BRAND NEW carry on suitcase for $15... It looked all beat up and old but it was just the wrapper that I literally peeled off. Perfect size for my upcoming Europe trip. Like any other thrift store - you need to take time looking through things. 100% will be back again. read more

My friend and I walked in and beelined for the back, where the books are sorted super nicely by category and also by author's last name for fiction. We have donated to this store in the past, always nice, clean and good quality stuff. We support La Casa de Las Madres, and we like that we can designate the proceeds of our donation to them. We're currently moving, and had gathered together a carload full of really good stuff. Most of the items were great quality men's clothing. As in, really nice items; shirts, suits- Gucci, Paul Smith, etc. All of the items were on hangers in clothing bags, neat, crisp and professionally laundered. My husband took it all there to donate. He specifically mentioned to the ( very rude) woman at the receiving door that everything was nicely laundered and ironed. Even though it was on hangers, she literally threw the whole lot into a nearby sorting skip. New flash, Community Thrift: you get better prices on items when they look good and not like a load of crumpled laundry. So disheartening to see nice things treated this way. Such a good thrift store. Found great finds. Really great causes too, but I'm not sure the % that goes to charities

I've been donatating all my surplus items to community thrift for years and have had a positive experience. There is a convenient drop off window with a parking space to quickly get in and out. I also like being able to choose which organization to benefit from my donations. My last experience dropping off items was weird and unpleasant. The three people at the donation window did not speak to me, looked pissed off or maybe just tired even though it was early in the day. I tried to be friendly and positive but left with the negative energy they sent me off with. I have had so many positive experiences there that I will donate again but for the benefit of Community Thrift, employees should encourage and be supportive of community members who want to donate. read more

I love the community thrift concept & have regularly donated clothing & household items for 20 years. This morning I brought a picnic backpack (never used) to donate that was collecting dust in my garage for several years. The volunteer taking the donations looked at the brand new albeit dusty item and flatly refused to accept it, deeming it "grody". I ran my hand over the item to clear off the dust & he still told me he couldn't sell such a dirty item in the store. After I requested speaking to the manager it was accepted.
