After feeling a bit low this morning, I came out to Compass Coffee to grab a quick drink. In passing, I mentioned to the barista who took my order that next week is my birthday. We joked around a little bit, and proceeded to get my drink situated. When my drink was ready, not only was it tasty, but it also had a really sweet happy birthday message on it. A different barista who prepared the drink also wished me a happy birthday. It really lightened my mood, and compelled me to come to Yelp and leave a review. The customer service here is fabulous, the baristas are absolutely lovely, and the drinks are quite tasty. Would 100% recommend coming to this coffee shop :) read more

I have been wanting to try Compass Coffee for some time now and was really excited when we found this location. Their shop is bright, clean and modernly decorated. There are plenty of places to sit and enjoy your coffee. They also have a long counter to handle the line. It wasn't busy on a Sunday afternoon but given their location, I could see them quickly getting busy on a weekday. They specialize in all things coffee with a variety of expresso drinks and options on how you want your coffee served. They also have different coffee on nitro and cold brew. The staff was nice enough to give us samples of the nitro which enjoyed. I decided on the iced lavender latte and my husband ordered an iced mocha. Our drinks were made to order and came out quickly. They were fantastic. I tried my husband's iced mocha and I'll admit it is one of the best iced mocha's that I've had! My iced lavender latte was delicious and well made. It had a great lavender flavor without being overpowering. The coffee was definitely the star. Great staff, great service, and excellent coffee. A win overall! read more

The noise level inside this location is horrendous. At 2:15pm on a Tuesday it sounded like a popular bar during a Friday happy hour. I'm not sure how much is due to the acoustics of the space or something else like people trying to talk over the loud pop music Compass was playing. And this was from the semi-separate back corner seating area. I had to keep re-reading sections of the report I had with me, because I couldn't hear myself think for long enough, and I left much sooner than I'd planned. I love Compass Coffee, but I won't be coming back to this location unless I'm looking for happy hour noise in the middle of my workday. It just isn't my cup of tea. read more

I can't believe I just discovered Compass Coffee a few months ago -- I've definitely been missing out! My favorite go-to drink is the Iced Matcha Latte. It's not too sweet, but also not too grassy for folks newer to the taste of matcha. They have a great variety of drinks and pastries that I'm excited to try out! This location is busy but super efficient, clean, and organized. The staff was very friendly, welcoming, and interpersonal! I'm so sad there isn't a Compass Coffee location closer to me in the Bethesda area. However, I always love to stop by anytime I'm in DC! read more

This is my second favorite location besides the Penn Quarter location. Trust me, some locations are better than others. This location is always busy but, no matter what time of day you come, the staff is always very efficient and kind. Unlike other locations, I've never encountered an unpleasant employee. I also like that there are two areas to order, one by each door. The only thing I don't like here is that there is never an open seat or table and they don't do the best job of cleaning up and making sure milks, straws, etc are restocked. read more

I love Compass Coffee, I enjoy the coffee but prefer the tea. I typically order the chia latte, very bold and full of flavor. I also ordered a bake good as well, sweet potato pound cake. An excellent compliment to my chai. I am super excited they expanded into a new space, this is definitely a place to mellow out enjoy your beverage while surfing the internet. Goodbye Starbucks, HELLO Compass. Quality coffee at a decent price. I get my medium almond milk latte for less than $4 and you can taste the love. The location is great as its right off the metro station and the service is always quick. They do well in catering to the working professional's AM rush. There is an area thats a seperate room with tons of plugs and tables, but not all the plugs are functional. The staff is very nice and fast. The lavender latte is really well done with the perfect balance between sweetness and floral nodes. The cold brew is also great here. They have some unique snacks as well. This is a nice coffee shop and the staff are friendly, but the blaring music is annoying. Music at a coffee shop should be in the background, whereas music at a nightclub should be the focal point. Great little coffee spot!! I'm not a huge fan of coffee but I do love teas and juices, they had a really delicious half lemonade half earl grey which was surprisingly tangy and soothing at the same time!! This location is in a great spot, right across from a park and a minute away from a metro stop, walking. They have WiFi and it's very open and well lit! I would definitely stop here again, especially in winter to see if they have any warm drinks I should try! read more

I generally like Compass locations quite a lot. This busy location has a decent amount of seating - I had no difficulty finding a seat to settle down in to work, but I imagine it might be hard if you were looking to seat 3-4 together. This time I broke from my usual chai latte routine and ordered a Nutella mocha. Sadly, you could barely taste any hazelnut or chocolate! It basically just tasted like, well, medium bodied coffee. I was decidedly unimpressed. They do offer a nice variety of baked good options. I had a pumpkin cheesecake bite wrapped in a granola cup, and it was quite good. I do appreciate that they have multiple sizes of baked goods, ranging from "just a bite" to "basically a meal." Overall, if you want a coffee and a place to work, this location seems fine. But I might stay away from the fancy-sounding latte drinks. read more

I've spent a year and a half looking for good coffee in this area. Mission accomplished. For a while, I went to Pleasant Pops because it's a small, locally-owned, has a great espresso machine, despite that they struggle mightily to properly froth milk (I've debated offering them advice). Then I tried Swings, which makes an incredible nitro and has a swanky environment, but the espresso, frankly, just tastes flat. Then Gregory's, which is Swing's with worse atmosphere and sad coffee art. Then somewhere else with funky milk that I don't even recall the name of. I was resigned to spend my time in DC longing for better coffee. And then I stumbled upon Compass. The atmosphere is humble, low-key, with light colors, simple furniture, and a lack of the oh-so-popular "trying too hard" decor. The staff is upbeat and friendly, the built-in espresso machines are very cool, and no matter how busy they are my coffee is always ready faster than I expect it. And the quality is outrageous. First, they have a proper small size, which allows for a perfect ratio of espresso to milk in their latte and allows for a casual coffee meeting without causing insomnia multiple hours later. Second, they froth their milk properly for each cup in small containers to the perfect consistency, where you see the slight sheen on the surface of the milk. Their beans are rich and full of flavor without that burnt flavor that Starbucks seems to produce when attempting a darker roast. Even the color of their latte is just right. In short, this is without a doubt the best cup of coffee I've encountered in DC. read more

Stumbled upon this gem since I needed a morning coffee and it was super close to the hotel. My bf and I took a mini trip to the DC area and I had a list of coffee places I wanted to check out and Compass was not on the list. Since it was close by we decided to stop in. This is THE BEST COFFEE PLACE I HAVE BEEN TO. EVER. We did check out some of the other coffee places on my list but Compass coffee is special and just amazing. There are quite a few locations in the DC area but it seems this one is fairly new. We have tried the chai latte, maple latte, caramel latte, Nutella mocha, and the butterscotch latte. Allllll of them are amazing!! You must try the maple latte though, it is just sweet and delicious! Their milk foam is the smoothest as well. We always had great service and amazing coffee here. We even stopped by here the last morning in DC because we couldn't get enough of it. This location is fairly small so not the best for large groups but if you're in the DC area and looking for an amazing cup of coffee, I highly recommend this place! I did try their lemon pound cake which is not that great, so I do not recommend that. Compass has ruined me and coffee is no longer the same anymore. I almost cried going back home because the current city I live in does not have many coffee places and I have to go back to drinking Starbucks. :( read more

I was so happy that a Compass Coffee opened on my morning commute route to GW campus. It's literally right across from the McPherson Metro Station on 14th st! So convenient! I had been once, but my experience was a bit different since it was overly crowded and I just grabbed a cup of coffee and left so I wasn't able to enjoy the atmosphere. This location did it right! There are two counters in which you can order your coffee from, I'm sure it really does expedite the line and ordering process. I had ordered the Nitro-Cold Brew. Nitro-Cold Brew - when it first came out, it looked like and Iced Latte so I had asked if this was the cold brew and the barista said yes. Then I confirmed, there's no milk correct? Nope, no milk. Good! I took my first sip without any additives to taste the flavor....AMAZING! You can really taste the coffee flavor and the Compass Cold Brew has a distinct one that was addicting! I think I have found my favorite cold brew in DC. It had a slight creaminess to it, and I think it has to do with the Nitrogen within the brew. It was so good that you don't need any sugar or creamer, because adding it, IMO, will just ruin that coffee cold brew flavor in each sip. Not only is the coffee good, the price is decent, especially for downtown DC! Atmosphere is great! Lots of tables and natural light, however I can tell it can get quite busy where you just can't find a table! Service was great and the barista that helped me was super nice and provided excellent customer service! He even complimented my tie! Whoo, I loved visiting Compass Coffee during my most recent time in DC. I stopped in the shop while looking for a place to escape the humidity and prep for an interview, and I'm glad that I chose to stop here. The baristas were really nice and quick and my drink, an iced matcha latte was delicious. The barista answered my question about whether the drink came sweetened and it does, so you don't need to add more sugar unless you want to. What's nice about this place is that there's plentiful seating and wifi! It was a great place to relax by myself, and also I saw many duos and trios chatting with one another too. This place is extremely loud! It sounded like people were trying to talk over each other...or the music - I still didn't figure it out. I ordered a Lavender Earl Grey tea which was ok, but served VERY hot. Everyone had to-go cups accept for one customer. It would've been nice to reduce waste & use a for-here mug or cup and saucer. This is a good cafe for chatting with friends, family, or on a date. I'd find another place to work, if that's your goal. It's nice when it's quiet, but this location is very popular. Very nice location with great seating options both for meetings (Tolerable noise level) or coffee breaks. I tried their Nitro Almond Chai and must say that it was way too sweet. I took it back and requested a different drink (which was done without question - really appreciate that!), instead I got a iced Matcha Latte (with less syrup) which was a lot better. I would suggest always asking for less syrup (or none) as their drinks are very sweet. Their regular coffee drinks are reasonably priced, espcially considering the quality of their beans. It was super delicious and not as expensive as the cold brews at a lot of other coffee shops. The seating is limited but most of the people just go in for the coffee and leave once they get it.
