I highly recommend Competitive Edge!! I am so grateful to Kevin and I his team. I had 2 meniscus surgeries in one year, I was very frustrated could not understand why! I was referred to competitive edge by another physical therapist that was confident Kevin would be able to help me. After talking to Kevin I chose to have the 3D personalized running gait assessment. The amount of detail is amazing, shows my running gait, angles of hips cadence and the amount of pressure applied. Kevin showed me the report and in the video I could actually see my leg crossover and the pelvic drop, which was causing pressure on my knee; due to weak hips and qlutes. He set up a plan of exercises to train my glutes and hips to fire and take the pressure off my knees. We met weekly with new exercises, the pressurized treadmill and 3d camera gives real time running biofeedback I could see that my running form had improved and illuminated the cross over and pelvic drop. Kevin has a vast knowledge of biomechanics he knows how the body is suppose to move, in order to be a more efficient, stronger, faster runner. Before I first went to Competitive EDGE, I read some of the reviews on yelp and was a bit skeptical of the perfect score. Well I have experienced their excellence first hand. Kevin helped me through a knee pain I developed from long distance running. They carry out a very quantitative assessment that identifies the problem areas. They then design a recovery plan that is very thorough. The progress is then monitored. I was able to work with Kevin for a few months and correct most of my mechanics and alleviate my knee pain. For my first visit I was struggling to find a babysitter for our 5 month daughter and Kevin and his team took turns playing with my daughter while Kevin carried out my assessment. I've been a competitive athlete for nearly 60 years and have had a long history of getting help from PTs with a variety of issues. I had an opportunity to work with Kevin and his team last year, when (sadly), I had a tibial stress fracture (missing the Boston Marathon) and a back injury sustained when I saw a PT with less experience. Kevin started with my back and quickly, the symptoms dissipated, and I went on to address the stress fracture, with a glut strengthening program, as well as addressing my biomechanics in general. I've been dealing with knee problems for about a year. Matt was able to diagnose and put me on a treatment plan that has helped immensely. I was impressed with how the plan evolved as my knee/leg strength grew and we were able to fine tune to continuously improve. The entire office team was great and the equipment is top of line. I was particularly excited to gear up with all the IMU and tracking sensors and run the treadmill with the high speed cameras and force plates. I was first introduced to Competitive Edge when I attended their free running workshop, where Kevin and Matt presented some high level information on the methods and tools that they use to analyze and correct common running injuries and biomechanical inefficiencies. I was impressed with their knowledge, so I followed up with a 2 hour "running gait analysis" that involved functional strength and flexibility testing, high speed video analysis of running form, and measurement of impact forces while running using a pressure measuring treadmill. At the end of this 2 hour session, Matt sent me a video and report explaining the results of the analysis and suggesting a proposed plan for improvement. In my case, Matt suggested a training plan consisting of ten 1-hour training sessions at Competitive Edge over the course of about 3 months. Since I had been having some running related back pain and was also looking for some possible form adjustments that could help me run faster and more efficiently, I decided to give the suggested plan a try. The plan started with fairly simple static exercises designed to train me how to recruit certain muscles (hips and glutes) often neglected by runners. These exercises were performed while wearing electrical muscle activation sensors which gave real time feedback of muscle contraction strength. The plan then progressed into strength building, balance, and dynamic exercises that helped emphasize the use of these muscles during proper running. Throughout the plan, the effectiveness of these exercises and adjustments was monitored using high speed video analysis and treadmill pressure monitoring. Overall, I am very satisfied with the results I've seen from my 10 training sessions at Competitive Edge, and I would recommend their services to any runners seeking to improve their running. read more

I began training for my first marathon in February, the race was scheduled for the end of July. In early May I began to feel symptoms of an injury in my lower leg which grew worse over time, eventually making it impossible to run. When I first went to Competitive EDGE I didn't think there was any way I would be able to compete in my planned marathon but Matt diagnosed the problem and quickly got me back on my feet through a series of strengthening exercises and running form adjustments. I finished my PT appointments just a few weeks before my race and I was able to run the marathon pain free. I would highly recommend Competitive Edge. I was sidelined from running due an injury early this year. I felt my running days may be over. Fortunately I found Competitive Edge. Have a sports injury you just can't seem to get rid of? Go see Kevin Vandi and he'll get you moving. I've had shin issues from running for almost 3 years, and had seen various PTs and chiropractors with some improvement but not ever a full recovery. I decided to give Kevin's running analysis a try. He has tons of technical tools to use: sensors that you place on your skin to make sure the right muscle is being used (ie. make sure you really use your glutes, not your hamstrings!), force sensors to see how hard you land, and a whole set up of body sensors and cameras for viewing your running on the treadmill in slow motion to capture every angle imaginable. It's a lot of data for sure! But Kevin was able to break it down and focus on a few key items to improve upon. I started seeing him in Dec and by Feb I was starting to see some good results [run retraining isn't a quick process - I was trying to learn a different run form after 30+ years of running a certain way]. And by June I had made significant improvements with most if not all of my runs being ache-free. With Kevin's help, I had much stronger glutes and core, and was able to land more softly while running and with more knee bend - which were the two key areas we were trying to address for better shock absorption in my shin. And I'm still improving and able to increase my running miles without negative consequences. For me, this has been amazing and this year I've finally been able to really 'train' for my races as opposed to just doing the bare minimum to get by (or not racing at all). Kevin is professional, and yet very personable. He really puts a lot of thought and effort into his sessions. He'll send me articles on things he's researched in regards to my situation, and puts time outside of our sessions into planning what the next approach will be. I highly recommend him to all my injured friends, esp when I hear them say 'but I've been to other doctors already'. Kevin just has a different approach to injury correction/prevention and it has helped me tremendously. In addition to Physical Therapy/Run retraining sessions, Kevin also does strength training sessions (not insurance-based) which I starting doing for whole body workouts. He tailors the workout to my goals and my weaknesses, and modifies it regularly to keep my muscles guessing. If you are looking for a physical therapist who actually knows what they're talking about and can develop a realistic plan for your recovery then this place is for you. I have seen many PT's due to my active lifestyle and have been disappointed all too often, but not here. Kevin is incredibly knowledgeable and truly understands how the body is supposed to perform and cares about getting you back to your sport/activity. He really is AWESOME. He will challenge you and make you work but it is worth every minute to become injury free or conditioned for a future event.
