I am so grateful to have found Competitive Edge! I am a longterm recreational runner recovering from a major health issue. Dr. Kevin Conway assessed my running gate and worked with me for 3 months to help me return to running regularly and safely. He customized exercises and stretches to help build up my strength so I felt more stable and strong in my runs. During PT sessions, Kevin would consistently check my form. He would also adjust my PT work out to push me to get stronger as well as adapt the work out as new issues would arise. Kevin's calm, positive demeanor was reassuring and encouraging. I've worked with many PTs over the years but always ended up re-injuring myself eventually when returning to running. I wish I had read Alex J.'s review from 2/26/2019. My wife's experience was identical with the overcharging and ineffective treatment. I had hoped that insurance was going to cover a lot of the fees like with traditional Physical Therapists, but that was not the case here. My insurance covers 80% of in network and out of network PT, but rehabilitative physical therapy is not something Competitive EDGE Physical Therapy has experience with. Not only can they not provide the service, but they also cannot bill correctly for the service as well because they do not know what they are doing, and the insurance company knows this. Instead of paying $30 per visit like I am paying now somewhere else, I was charged hundred's like Alex J. at Competitive EDGE Physical Therapy. My insurance denied most of my claims for PT service payment because they were services that should not have been charged. read more

I have been a competitive runner (now 60+) for some years and was dismayed early this year to find myself with an injury which could have ruined the upcoming season (I run the road race circuit and 1500m track). I had been recommended to Kevin by a fellow club runner and on that recommendation I decided to have the full gait analysis as well as have the injury seen to. Having been to a number of chiropractors previously I was skeptical about how much they could help but I was desperate and trusted the recommendation I had been given. The price was not cheap but I bit the bullet. My first session was a full 2 hours where Kevin worked with me for the entire time (as opposed to the normal 10 minutes actual hands on time with your 40 to 60 minute appointment with a chiropractor!). We went through the gait analysis which used some impressive technology. I have suffered for a number of years from a weak left leg but could never quite work out how to get it to full strength. Kevin put me through my paces as well as hands on manipulation and identified my problem as a weak left glute. This was actually unsurprising as I have suffered for years from a Piriformis issue on the left. What I had not worked out was that my chronic issue was due to the weak glute. We then started working on a program to improve this. During the session, electronic sensors were placed on my glutes to measure their activation. What that identified was that an exercise as simple as a clam shell can be completely useless if you do not do them properly. I was doing the work but I was actually doing nothing to solve the problem. With some coaching I was able to perform the exercise properly and could see the results right there on the monitor as I correctly activated the muscle. I signed up for a series of 10 sessions as although I was still a bit skeptical I could see a potential path forward. Within two or three weeks I no longer suffered from the piriformis pain and I was able to much more easily work my program that I had been set to do. I did 5 weeks of PT sessions, then a gap of 4 weeks to build my strength then another series of 5 weeks. The price is not cheap but to improve my running and do it pain free meant that faded very quickly into the background. The other thing to know is that this is an intensive program inasmuch as you are given your weekly workout schedule, some things daily, every other day or a couple of times a week. If you do not have the discipline to adhere to the schedule this may not be for you. I had one scare in the middle of my racing season where after a speed workout I had a severe pain behind my knee. I called Kevin and they moved things around and got me in the next day. Matt tested through working the leg for what the cause might be, identified it and did (painful!) manipulation on the offending muscle. To more shock than anything the knee felt better and I had the 1500m of my life 2 days later. My season has just ended and from being initially cynical, I had the best competitive season of my life. I have no doubt that the work I did with Kevin played a big part in that. They are with you for every minute of your time with them and they provide a kind of concierge service as they will answer any of your muscle issue questions, respond to all calls and email questions even outside sessions. As a 60+ runner it's easy to pick up injuries and being able to ask the countless questions that come up with all runners has been great. On the proof they have given me in improvements and ridiculously good customer service I would highly recommend them. read more

Highly recommend. I was having really bad shin splints and had tried everything from shoes, insoles, and YouTube research. All of those things helped, but did not fix the problem. Given that I am not a competitive athlete, I was hesitant to spend the money to get evaluated. After the pain was getting too much, I finally decided to pull the triggered. Long story short I don't regret a thing. Torey was amazing and the process/technology they use was top notch. Torey evaluated my problems and gave me full stretching routine and tips to continue to do on my own. Shin splints were gone almost instantly and I enjoy running again. read more

I've never left a Yelp review, but I feel that these folks were VERY deceptive with me and I want to warn others. After suffering with lower back pain for years, I was desperate. I was contacted over the phone by a guy (owner?) who assured me that this place has special technology only available at hospitals and universities. He assured me that they'd be able to precisely diagnose my issue using this technology, so that I wouldn't have to waste any more time and money on guesswork and errant treatment. (Spoiler/TL;DR: this wasn't true). Despite the insanely high price, ($345 initial appointment, $245/appointment after that), the promise of relief led me to come in and try this place out. Below are three ways in which I was deceived: #1) No special equipment/technology was used to diagnose. The diagnostic process was the exact same as I've been through at any other PT/ Chiro. PT asked me some questions and observed me as I made a few movements. That's it. #2) No precise diagnosis was made. Every time I tried to ask my PT what was wrong with me, I got the same "could be a muscle, could be a nerve, let's strengthen your core" runaround. By the 4th appointment, it became clear that he had no idea what was going on. #3) Both the owner and my PT told me that I'd only need to come in for 2-3 weekly appointments, after which I'd only need to come in once or twice a month for maintenance work. By my 5th weekly appointment, it became very obvious that there was no plan to reduce the frequency of my visits as long as I was still capable of paying. Beware. --- After 1 month of treatment, the only physical difference I feel is a significantly lighter wallet. My back feels the same as it did before I started, and I am none the wiser as to what's actually wrong with it. I am giving 2 stars instead of 1 because I'm sure these folks are decent PTs. But their business practices are unacceptable. They flat out lied to my face about their capabilities and about the frequency of my treatments. They then proceeded to suck $1K cash from me before I could even blink. Be a smart consumer and don't let them do the same to you. There are plenty of places that provide the same treatment as these folks for 25%-50% of the cost. read more

Tarsal Tunnel gave me very limited mobility. The Challenges Descending stairs, going barefoot, hiking in tennis shoes, walking for any distance, limped. I love to hike. After the Therapy!!!!! After injuring my knee and limping for six months I decided to visit Competitive Edge. In a few weeks of therapy my limp disappeared an I am walking normally. I haven't had a problem with my knee since the therapy. Josh Tatsuno is a DPT he treated my injured shoulders. My shoulders were so locked up I could not put on a shirt. Working with Josh for a few sessions corrected the problems with my shoulders and now I have a full range of motion with my arms, they are stronger too. I doubted anyone could relieve my chronic back pain caused by an old injury. Josh Tatuno did more for relieving my back pain than all the doctors, surgeons, and physical therapists combined. Kevin and Competitive Edge changed my life. I've been recommending friends go see him for over a year. You should go see the Competitive Edge team. Writing this review only took so long because I wanted to take the time to do it right! I sprained my SI joint in 2012, and had been in and out of physical therapy for several years. Four years, several successive injuries, and three PT practices later, I could not figure out how to get from bosu balls and resistance bands to what I really wanted - powerlifting. After trying several different practices with the same incomplete results, I had resigned myself to a sedentary life. By the time my daughter was born in 2016, I had back pain that was interfering with my day to day activities. I only sat in certain chairs in my house, and transitioning between sitting and standing was painful. I decided I had to try again, and scoured the internet for physical therapy practices in the South Bay. When I first opened the Competitive Edge website, I was immediately drawn to a picture of Kevin standing in front of the power rack in his office. A PT with a strength and conditioning certification and a power rack in the office - I had found my guy! Far from the usual 3x/week grind, I came in once a week, but each session made the most of our time together. Appointments and my home practice were structured to keep me challenged and progressing. We used EMG sensors to give visual feedback on my muscle recruitment patterns, and Kevin was happy to indulge my endless questions, looking up anatomical diagrams on the internet to illustrate why we were doing things and providing book recommendations. Kevin addressed muscular imbalances, biomechanical patterns, and my own understanding. I now know that a healthy back is not a milestone - it is something I have to manage, and now I have the tools to do this. 8 weeks later, I started barbell squatting. A few weeks after that, I was deadlifting and feeling great. The journey hasn't been without hiccups - there have been a few times that I tweaked something and Kevin had to work me in on short notice for assessment and advice. But these incidents are fewer and farther apart, my recovery is faster each time, and I now have the understanding to manage the little bumps that come with an athletic lifestyle. I was proud to text Kevin last August and tell him that I had participated in my first powerlifting meet, where I squatted 341 pounds and deadlifted 409. I'm active with my family, training five days per week, and selecting powerlifting meets for 2018. I tore my ACL playing soccer and was operated in March of 2017, and I started seeing Kevin 6 months later, in September of 2017. I have seen many Physical Therapists throughout my life and throughout my ACL rehab. This time I was looking for some real science based, modern, sports physical therapy that was adapted to my specific situation. Somebody experienced with ACL rehabs and experienced with high level athletes trying to return to sport at a high level. I was looking for PT that would spend the entire time with me, and not hand me off to PT assistant like a lot of clinics do. I was looking not only to get through rehab, but get back on the field stronger than ever in order to avoid re injury. Soccer is a passion, and I needed to get this done right. Kevin and Matt have met, if not exceeded my expectations. Very thorough testing through high level sensors and cameras in order to analyze the good and the bad of my form 6 months post surgery, and do the proper corrections in order to avoid re injury and have me perform back at the level I was at. There are no PT assistants. There is you, the PT and the full hour. No session has ever been rushed and no session has ever started late. The patient care coordinators are always in a positive mood and complete the staff nicely. I strongly recommend this office for any post surgery rehab. I should mention that I live about an hour away, and the drive is more than worth the time spent with these excellent professionals. I have started to play again in January 2018, almost 10 months post surgery. A few bumps along the road, but I am now 100% healed and back on the field feeling amazing. I was told that I had tendonitis, but nothing I ever did seemed to help it. These guys are legit. My son is a soccer player and started having lower back pain while playing. MRI and X-Rays showed nothing and we tried few other PT places. Also tried session at Chiropractors, acupuncture. you name it. Nothing worked. Pain would always come back. I went and saw Kevin and only after few session my son started to feel better. I'm writing this review from both a patient and a doctor's point of view: I have been seeing Kevin for my ACL rehab. I'm 11 months post ACL reconstruction with an allograft. Kevin has been very professional, always encouraging me to push myself more. After this type of surgery you feel that you will never be the same. He has given me more confidence with my knee. My knee is strong now. Maybe even stronger than my other knee. It also helps that he's been an athlete and has had his share of sports related injuries. As a doctor, I have referred a lot patients to Kevin. I had yet another patient let me know how much they appreciated being referred to Kevin. Great place to go for hi-tech healing for injuries, whether it's neck, back, achilles, etc. My 12 year old daughter first went to Kevin for her achilles heel injury which had been bothering her for over a year. With state-of-the-art technology and watching her movement in soccer and running, he was able to help heal her injury. she has stayed injury-free for months. After seeing these great results, I decided to go to Kevin after a horrible neck injury which kept me sidelined from tennis and weight training. Without a doubt the best y physical therapy center in the bay area. I am a triathlete and get my boddy tot he limit and constantly have injuries. I had a fantastic experience with Rob, one of the PTs working at Competitive Edge. I had a long-term achilles injury that had been preventing me from running, and even walking, without severe pain. I was contemplating seeing a surgeon, but in the meantime was in very poor spirits as I could not get out and run. At times I thought I never would be able to run again without pain. I am happy to say that, because of Rob's expert care, surgery was not necessary and I am back to running! (If not quite back to running shape, yet). Rob is clearly an expert in his field. Not only was his training plan and physical therapy practice very effective, but he also teaches future Physical Therapists in higher level courses. I also want to point out that Rob was highly supportive and encouraging throughout. My story is a bit different compared to all the super athletes reviews (not that I'm envious in any way). I do love Zumba and tennis but by no means did I ever need to shave off any time in my dance classes. I was happy to just keep up. In 2015, I was on vacation in Paris. On the second day of our trip I managed to fall down a staircase in the Louvre museum. True story. Diagnosis was a high ankle sprain, complete syndesmosis in my right foot. Emergency surgery in Paris (the ambulences really do make that infamous sound). Supposed to be a 3 month recovery. 2 years and 5 surgeries later I am finally able to walk like I did pre-surgery thanks to my sports injury surgeon and Matt Rickets at Competitive Edge. He knew exactly how my ankle needed to be treated in order to walk without a limp and without pain The exercises were tough but they worked! We started with stretching and strengthing exercises tailored to the results of my injury and body type (a little bit rounder than I'd like). Sounds easy enough but it was really a lot of work. Then he incorporated the hi-tech machines. The visual feedback undeniably streamlines recovery. The computer was able to SHOW me the actual pressure points I was using while I walked on the treadmill in detailed, color-coded imagery. I could see exactly what I needed to change while I walked. My last surgery was on June 28th, 2017, exactly 4 1/2 weeks before going on vacation to New York where walking is the main form of transportation. With Matt's customized recovery plan I was walking, pain free, with only the use of an ASO brace (not a clumsy boot). I was very nervous about a trip to New York. But, walking for blocks and blocks with only my brace as suppport was somewhat near a miracle. This brace fits comfortably in tennis shoes. I highly recommed it for strong ankle support). I'll be brace free in a few more weeks! The reason I came to Competitive Edge, despite the fact that they are out-of-network, was because of Matt Rickerts I met him while he was working with a different PT facility which had a very different style of therapy. I was only able to spend a half an hour with Matt. Having the full hour makes a tremendous difference. When Matt moved to Competitive Edge, I followed him. By that time I had worked with a handful of other PTs and none of them were impressive. The CE folks know PT. Matt is always very patient all the while pushing me to reach my goal--walking normally and pain free. My ultimate goal is to get back on the court and in a dance studio. That may take a couple more years. But I CAN WALK. Even the doctors werent sure that walking limping was possible. If I haven't been clear I completely RECOMMEND Competitive Edge. It seems as most of their other great reviews are written by the super athletic. Although I would like to be in their company, it's important to know that CE treats sports injuries and, umm, klutzy injuries. Thanks Matt. read more

I'm an ultrarunner with a serious back injury. It is essential for me to run correctly such that I don't get reinjured like last year and can enjoy this sport lifelong. This, and, of course I'm somewhat competitive and would like to see what my body can do when I use it optimally. Competitive Edge does just that. Kevin and Matt are really cool and hook you up onto a variety of magnetic sensors and high speed videocameras such that you can analyze your running form with more data than even I as a scientist can process in one sitting!! The program then continues on to activating and strengthening the muscles that aren't used optimally and form is corrected. I'm looking forward every week to my appointment. I enjoy this so much and they're so nice and professional. I've worked with many PTs due to my injury and Matt is BY FAR the most knowledgeable and most precise of all, really cares about every little detail of the position you're in and is fun as well! I tore my achilles back in March, and what separates this place from the other PT places I've been to is that the sessions are truly about pushing you to your limit in order to get you back to 100% as quickly as possible. Excellent Physical Therapist team and support staff. I was so impressed with Matt and my improvement while receiving pt for a recent thumb surgery I decided to get additional pt for a 35 year old knee reconstruction surgery. I had received pt several times in the past for my knee surgeries, we had worked on mobility only so I had never recovered my muscular strength. Competitive Edge is different because of the combined approach of biofeedback to see how the muscles are working , mobility and strength.Over the years my knee had become weaker and increasingly stiffer than my good knee. I was wearing an unloader knee brace full time for my work as a sheet metal worker. We worked on strength and flexibility at each session to get me back to work as soon as possible. Matt was knowledgeable and creative coming up with ways to increase my grip strength on my thumb as my grip is a safety concern for my work. I returned to work brace free this past week. Unlike many other reviewers, I wasn't currently injured or referred by a physician. Instead, as an amateur triathlete and runner, I was hoping to improve my running form and gain efficiency and thereby prevent injury and enjoy events more. I had done a bunch of research on places that would view videos of your form or make recommendations, and seen several videos of places where you could get a very technical gait analysis and then a specific work plan to improve, many at relatively low price points and offering remote coaching. Though Kevin's services are priced at a premium, I decided to investigate for myself as he offers a free consultation. My wife is a former runner and nurse and came with me to the evaluation, and she was as impressed with Kevin's understanding of body mechanics and treatment regimens as I was. I followed up with his full evaluation, and after that, agreed to sign on for several months of muscle activation, form training, and strength exercises. Over the 3 months that I worked with Kevin, I really enjoyed how he's happy to take any question, is very responsive over e-mail, and can go to any technical depth on a subject as you would like - I just enjoyed the process of working with him and learning from him, and he's got a pretty good sense of humor to boot. So - to the results - I chopped 4 minutes off my best Olympic triathlon run (bringing me down to a 2:46 overall), 40 minutes off my half iron run (leading me to a 5:48 overall) and 9 minutes off my Escape from Alcatraz run, which moved my standing overall up from top 50% in 2016 to top 18% of finishers in 2017. And the best part - I actually enjoyed the events knowing that I was using the right muscles, in the right way, at the right time, and had the energy to finish strong. The fact that I was able to deduct his diagnosis and treatment against my HSA plan was a huge bonus. In short, Competitive Edge is a great place to heal when you are in need of physical therapy. The owner, Kevin Vandi is truly professional, friendly and has a really good bedside manner. My Story- I went to Kevin to find a solution for an old injury in my right neck, shoulder and arm. I was in a lot of pain and was not very functional. I decided to attend his first teaser session (at no cost). Kevin took the time to talk to me about my injury, my health history etc. Even though, his website said that the teaser session was 15-20 min long, he took more than 35 minutes to take a look at my situation and draw a treatment plan. Next, he worked with me to educate me about the right posture and appropriate exercises. I felt 95% better with massage and exercise right after the first session. He recommended two more sessions to make sure I was completely healed. Right now, I am able to do so many things physically I would not have dared to attempt a month back! I have had three knee surgeries in the last three years, last two of which I did not need. my son/in/law has taken his kids to kevin for pt treatment. he highly recommended competitive EDGE. Kevin V. is the best Physical Therapist that there is. 1. I had severe Plantar Fasciitis pain. Could not even get out of bed. He carefully diagnosed the problem; came up with a customized regimen. In only 6 sessions, I was completely pain free. This was 6 years ago. No pain since... no pain at all. 2. Later, I had developed severe shoulder pain (incorrect way of lifting iron !!!). Pain would not even let me sleep at night. Again, few short sessions and the pain was completely gone.. never to return. 3. Last but not the least; I developed severe Sciatica Nerve pain. Went to pain management MD. The MD did not diagnose the problem; but simply gave me an Epidural Steroid Injection. Pain went away only to return to it's severity in 2 months. My pain intensity was so severe that I fell down from my stairs in the house and injured myself. So, as always, I went to Kevin. To my disbelief, he got rid of my Sciatica pain in 6 sessions. I am completely, 100% pain free after 5 months of agonizing pain. Yes, I guess I am really good at injuring myself. I have been seeing Kevin Vandi for the past 6 weeks for my lower back pain which started over 2 years ago. I had a back injury and since then I had stopped working out completely which I knew was not the right thing to do but it ended up being that way. I had been to a different physical therapy clinic for almost 8 months and I knew that something was missing / not right. I read up about this place on yelp and decided to see Kevin. I have to say that this was exactly what I was looking for! No doubt this place is expensive due to the fact that they don't take insurance but totally worth every penny.. I have seen a remarkable improvement in my back within a couple of sessions after seeing Kevin. He is very patient and an excellent coach!
