Let me start by saying that Sebastian is a not only a super nice, professional guy - he is a computer god. When my 2-year old Macbook Air spontaneously wouldn't turn on one day, and Apple failed to offer any explanation other than saying it was akin to "getting a flat tire" and quoting me an absurd amount (something I will never not be angry about), I sought cheaper alternatives. I should also mention that to do this I borrowed my boyfriend's laptop, which I proceeded to accidentally spilled water on (mercury. retrograde). Luckily prior to the latter mishap, I was able to read a few Yelp reviews and saw good things about Comptechnyc - a small business with promising comments located near my apartment. As soon as I met Sebastian I could tell he understood my financial standing (poor) and feelings towards the situation (despair). He opened up both laptops to show me the internal damages, and how he would go about trying to fixing them - something I'd never seen before and had previously blindly trusted Apple with. Long story short, Sebastian tried a ton of different things to get the damaged parts working in both machines so I wouldn't have to buy any more new parts than I had to. To cut to the end of the chase - my "motherboard" (a very expensive part) was officially pronounced dead in mine, so he actually ended up putting my hardrive into my boyfriend's laptop (his had been damaged by the water). He also transferred my data onto an external hardrive, and the data from my boyfriend's hardrive to the new one inside his machine. All in all, I was happy to pay $330 to Sebastian for all this where Apple was quoting me $900+. I've been very very skeptical when it comes to mum and pop computer repair shops, but yesterday I was in a crunch as my normal repair outlet (staples) wanted to charge me $360 to remove an SD card, and remove and check damage to my related DVD drive which the SD card fell into.. Sebastian brought back to life a dinosaur MacBook Pro 15-inch early 2008 pre unibody. I have a mid 2012 and a mid 2015, but this one holds sentimental value because it was my first MacBook Pro and I got it through a friend's Student Discount at SVA. He replaced the fans which were making clicking noises and were creating a big over heating issue, replaced the hard-drive from 128GB to 750GB and updated the memory slots from 2GB to 6GB. He also added an app to cool my Mac down by adjusting the fan speed when it is overworking. UPDATED 3x: BE CAREFUL WITH THIS COMPANY! I had my battery replaced in January by Comptechnyc only to have the new one break down by early April. I went in with a battery that died quickly and left with one that, in two months, would suddenly die in 20 minutes with a 50% charge. Needless to say, I was frustrated after spending so much money only to end up with a battery that was worse than the one I started out with. However, because Sebastian (company's owner) had asked ME to order the new battery myself (dictating what brand to buy and where to get it, but otherwise hands off), the owner refused to take any responsibility for the battery's failure and would not offer a discount when a new service was requested. Rather than remain in what feels like a cycle of inadequate service, I will be taking my computer elsewhere for round two. If you plan to use Comptechnyc's service, be wary about any work they try to outsource to you -- keep them honest and responsible for all aspects of the service. I regret trusting them, but perhaps it is as simple as that. IN RESPOND TO COMMENT BELOW: If the case were simply that I had bought a bad battery, I would not have left this review. I gave you two stars because of the method you conducted this business -- You asked that I purchase the battery myself (to reiterate, after naming certain brands and where to buy) rather than be responsible for the entire transaction yourself. After a lapse of judgment of leaving my computer unattended next to my pet, my MacBook pro screen took a fall and the screen became busted. I began surveying the NYC computer repair shops on Yelp. I already knew that it would be a little pricey due to the retina display screen, but at the end of the day, I just wanted a good repair service with a fair price. Some of the computer repair shops I visited were quick to give me a quote without fully diagnosing the problem. I put in a tech repair request to multiple vendors about an old laptop that needed a new battery. Some of the vendors gave me vague responses and told me that I should come in so they could take a look before they could give me a quote. Or they responded that they couldn't help me.
