I've lived in East Sacramento for over 7yrs. Every time I've attempted to support Compton's Market I am always addressed rudely by upper management. This morning I went in around 730am to get coffee and a sandwich with my 11 yr old daughter and was aggressively told by the owner/manager to "Take off our backpacks or leave"! I was shocked! We were only 3 feet in the door before being greeted in a way I felt was extremely unprofessional. I explained we would not be shopping! We only wanted to get lunch and coffee. She then told me it doesn't matter and it was their policy. "Didn't you see the sign at the door"? After I refused to take off my and my 11yr olds back pack, we still made an effort to spend our money and collect what we came for. The perishables and other frozen goods are ALWAYS Expired and the pricing is 20-30% higher than their local competitors. This is my 2nd and last time attempting to support this establishment. My 1st experience was with a cashier that ID'd me for beer (it's the law so I understand/however I'm 35 with Grey hair and Clearly over legal age) and because East Sac is a small neighborhood and everyone casually walks around without their purse or wallet I made the mistake of not bringing mine that day while walking my dog. After I WALKED HOME and CAME BACK with my ID. The gentleman in front of me purchased beer and WAS NOT ID'd! When Itbrought to the attention of management, the excuse was the following: "we have the right to ID who we want"! I politely said thank you and went on my way. Compton's is a neighborhood market that should take pride in its local customers that help keep the doors open. If your looking for OVER priced food and horrible customer service. This is the place for you! I will never be back! read more

My husband and I come here quite a lot. Not only do they have a great wine selection but their sauces and marinades are great! You can't beat their pre-marinated chicken and other meats/seafood and their the lines to get out are always fast. The store is close to our home and though you can always find people in there, it's so much better than your typical supermarket because it's never too crowded. read more

The store is a specialty store that has merchandise you would not find in regular grocery stores. I have a some concerns. I have been there a few times and maybe 4 out of 5 has been unpleasant. I'm not playing the race card and the reasons I will shop there is because of concerns of going in to larger grocery stores in the midst of The Covid virus. So I felt less people small store, less chance of being around larger crowds. I felt because I'm a person of color that they watch you when you shop, there will be more than 1 or more store employees that will suddenly appear in the isles when your shopping and noticed they were not there beforehand. They have employed a couple of Hispanic workers who for some strange reason will stare and watch you as well, I thought and felt ok so the store hires a couple of minority's to further enhance their behavior or get away with making you feel uncomfortable. I'm a very friendly person but I felt I had to be extra friendly towards them to get a smile or feeling of being welcomed. Then to my surprise, if you've ever been in the store the isles are very narrow, when your in your cart there is certainly no room for 2 carts to pass each other. So this gentleman approaches me cart to cart where it is impossible to move. I took the higher road and asked the man " Are you trying to get through"? He stated I'm just checking if there is detergent in the isle behind you. My husband was with me and he said " no, detergent. On this isle. The man retorted in surprise " oh it must be in another isle." I took it as if the Man thought I was going to counteract with his aggressiveness of coming head to head with my shopping cart. But then backed up when he realized that there wasn't going to be a confrontation. It's just this uneasy feeling you get from the store staff of watchful eyes and the unwelcoming of the patrons as well. I feel the store admin sets the climate and the staff as well. It is a very unwelcoming feeling you get. It's too bad because I like what the store has to offer as far as having items readily available, although pricy in the midst of the Covid pandemic feel safe in smaller crowds. It should not matter if a person spends 1.00 to more, or the color of your skin. We as customers are choosing to shop there. It really concerns me that in the midst of this pandemic the administration and its staff should be more compassionate and respectful of each patron. read more

I work in the area and I forgot my lunch. It's a short walk from my work to the market. As I was walking up I could smell an aroma of indian food. My nose followed the smell and led me to the hot food section. There was a wonderful display of chicken/cauliflower curry and basmati rice. I had to try it out. When you are done scooping out your food, go to the register and they will weigh it there for you. Price was good and they're staff was friendly. As I got back to work, I put the food in my fridge to eat later. And to my surprise this was about the best damn indian food I've had in awhile! It was tasty, flavorful and had a kick to it. If you were ever to smell an aroma of indian food when passing this place, I suggest you go in and get yourself a plate to go! I will definitely be coming back! read more

Compton's is my neighborhood market and it definitely has that neighborhood feel. They're always doing events like local wine tastings and fundraisers for local schools or parks. They recently spent a lot of money to put in a salad bar, which I haven't tried yet. They have excellent produce and a huge variety of organic fruits and veggies. I recommend their Harris Ranch tri tip. It comes pre seasoned and marinated. It's about $20 for a tri tip. Great baked or BBQed and it has a meat thermometer thing in it that pops up when it's ready. They have a large selection of wines. Much better than safeway but it is pricey. We can't afford to do our big grocery trips here. read more

I've lived in East Sacramento for 7 years. I can't imagine my life without Compton's market. It's a wonderful place. The checkers know me by name. I love the produce department ; they have the best produce by far from anyone around. They have a wide variety of organic produce at what I would consider reasonable prices for the quality. Not to mention It's so convenient and they have practically everything I could ever want or need. Loving the recent addition of the post office. It just evokes my laziness to never leave my neighborhood. They're ready to go meals are tasty and fresh. I particularly like the Indian food available. My daughter often takes advantage of the salad bar. I am often shocked that they have better prices then the Save Mart up the street. I'm a big proponent on supporting local business and finding a local neighborhood market these days is a rarity. It's also a rarity to find someone who does it very well with a big smile. The liquor and wine selection are a great bonus. I also appreciate that I can find gourmet items that I would not be able to find in a traditional market. I'm loving all the new updates that they're doing. The store has a quiant fresh look. They have a great gourmet beer selection now and a gourmet cheese selection. The new owners have also brought in several different kinds of artisan bread from different bakeries. I have nothing but love for this store I love that it's only a few blocks away from my house. read more

Wonderful neighborhood market. Prices are great and very friendly staff! They have wine and beer tasting on certain days too. Lots of fun! Just purchased their vegetarian lasagna as I, once again, wanted to support this neighborhood store. The lasagna was horrible and tasted like vinegar for some reason. Their ready made food leaves a lot to be desired. However, we have had good luck with their carrot cake. Expensive place and owner needs to ask his customers what they think. read more

We'll often go to Compton's over Safeway even though it's farther away. It's much more relaxing, parking is easy, and the prices are comparable (not that it's a bargain--Safeway is pretty expensive). Of course they're smaller so they don't have the same selection of items, but not bad for a neighborhood grocery store. Things I especially like: decent produce section, good wine aisle, pre-made meals such as meatloaf, and numerous organic choices. I wouldn't do a full-scale shopping trip here, but for picking up a few items now and then it's great. read more

A nice neighborhood market. Fresh produce generally. Everything seems a bit more costly than other markets which is probably since it doesn't have buying power--although they must be making money as they added a bar/cafe in 2017. There's a nice selection of some specialty foods and most of the main stuff. Always friendly and rarely any long lines. It helps maintain the fabric of a community. We are thankful for this business as a welcome alternative to large chain super markets. Sometimes has problems with expired products on their shelves. The 3 stars is mainly because of costs, expiration issues and periodic lack of selection. read more

This is a convenient neighborhood store. However, I only duck into here when I need one or two items. I would never do my weekly shopping here. Selection is minimal and prices are high. If this was my only shopping option rating would be much lower. But it does come in handy when you need a gallon of milk or tub of sour cream. read more

While you won't find big box store pricing here, you will find some very cool specialty grocery items that you won't find at those big box stores. Also, they have a great wine selection! It's a clean place, the customer service is good and everyone I've dealt with is friendly. The pricing is in line with a neighborhood store of this kind, so for the type of store this is I really have no complaints. Glad they're here. read more

Greed, greed and more greed. This market has gone from bad to worse. Between the filthy parking lot, expired foods, excessive garbage piled all around the building and the thoughtless, greedy owners I will happily drive a mile or two to shop elsewhere. Being a busy parent I used to shop here for the quick dinner necessity, but the overpriced items and my overactive bowels following eating meat purchased here slowed my patronage. After recent events of the business acquiring the public alley, in which they are now free to do with whatever they want (wake-up neighbors and DO SOMETHING!) with zero concern of the residents, I will never step foot in this business again. The owner is not local, he could not care less how his business affects the neighborhood. Disgusting in every way possible. read more

This is my neighborhood grocery. The staff is fantastic and the selection is very full. It is NOT more expensive (have you shopped Target lately? That's one pricey store now!) Their meats are always delicious and their produce is about the best in town. This grocery is perfect for East Sac. read more

Tried the new ready-made food counter at 7pm on a Monday. Nightmare! Not much left and what we got was awful. Dried out chicken, lumpy mashed potatoes and understaffed, rude service to boot. It's a love hate relationship. It's so close and convenient, that I'm there all the time. Always forgetting SOMETHING for dinner. Great selection, but pricey. Be careful if something is on sale! 99% of the time, it's because it has expired. Is that even legal??? However, I have to give them credit for really sprucing up the place and fitting so much variety under one little ceiling. The employees are super friendly and helpful! They just need to get the owners to toss stuff when it's gone bad. Not mark it down to $1.99. Although it may look more modern and high end under new ownership, I'm not sure that I trust their perishables. Always double check the exp dates and look for mold. I wanna love them, but I just can't get over that. read more

Talk about personal service! Compton's will order the cut of meat you want and stocks items based upon customer requests. I used to have to go to Trader Joe's, Whole Foods or Corti for specialty items, but after a few notes in the customer feedback box, I can do all of my shopping at Compton's instead. I love the wide variety of organic and natural foods and support of other small local businesses like Bennett's pies (yum!). read more

I absolutely love Compton's Market. I go there at least 5 times a week, whether it be to pick up a bottle of wine, a six pack of locally brewed beers, a loaf of Acme bread, or rent a movie. Compton's has the basics covered and then some. The necessities (toiletries, medicine, cleaning products, boxed goods) are a bit overpriced, but not so much so that you would avoid it in a pinch. The produce is very fairly priced, often better than their bigger competitors. I often get watermelons for $3.99 a piece, heirloom artichokes for $.99, and Cuties for $4.99 a bag. There is a soup, salad, and sandwich bar which has very tasty options, and a nice sitting area out front where you can enjoy your treats. To top it off, Compton's has the friendliest staff in town. Overall, it's a great experience. Swing by on a Friday evening to catch a wine or whiskey tasting, or any other evening to check out the best beer selection in East Sac. When I first started shopping at Comptons, very nice store and good customer service. I moved closer to other stroes, but went to Comptons because I have had no bad experiences until this last Saturday mornitng. I have not been there for a while. I went to get some things for breakfast... Potatoes, Bacon, and while I was looking for a nice pack of bacon which isn't cheap, I was looking in the window on the back of the packages where there is a perforated to be able to open, a worker came up and said "Don't open up the windows, the packages get torn and we won't be able to sell them. NOt true and I was being neat. He said t look at the front of the package where you see the meat at the top where it is sliced. I put everything back and it's too bad that worker had a bad attitude. I'm sure that the owner of Comptons would not appreciate it. read more

Wonderfully small , with a warm atmosphere (yes, that is still possible in this super supermarket world) and yet the inventory always has some version of what you need if you don't want to fight the lines and the grouchy crowds in Safeway on Alhambra.. The help is marvelous, the selection tends towards immediate needs such as great cheese, olives and wine, good produce and meat, and higher end lunch and dinner, semi-gourmet, freshly prepared food. All routes in the three mile area surrounding the store are lovely, effortless commutes, whether on foot, bike or in a vehicle. It is even directly on a very reliable bus route. (#34) If the new owners change anything, I suggest they check with the customers! read more
