I was invited here by a family member. I expected to post a remarkable review. However, the chili has an acquired taste. Something that I am not used to the fries were amazing and the Customer Service was really nice when you come here just make sure you have enough coins for the meter and you'll be all set. For me, the hotdog taste as if they were watered down. And the tables were dirty as well. We just moved to a clean table. We didn't make a big deal about it since you seat yourself. read more

Had lunch here the other day - burger and onion rings. Everything was great. The waitress was really nice, made sure our glasses were always full and we were satisfied. Great job on her part (I think her name is Dawn???). Anyway, the chili dogs are always good, the burgers are fine, soups are on par. Service is fast and the staff is nice. read more

In Toledo for over 100 years. That speaks volumes itself. This place is no frills straight up delicious hot dog and food. The service is friendly and the customers colorful. Easily one of Toledo's best coney dogs; not overly tomato based, the sauce is unique and flavorful. Catch them in the mornings and for lunch. Most days open til 530PM. read more

Coney Island Hot Dog is, I believe, the oldest running restaurant in Toledo. For almost a hundred years they've been selling short order diner food, featuring "coney" dogs. And I put quotes around the word coney because they'll happily serve them up with ketchup if you'd like. First the downside. Glance around the open kitchen and you'll see a lot of GFS products. This is not fine dining folks, by any stretch of the imagination. Also, they only have a flat top griddle and deep fryers, so nothing is cooked on a grill or in a pan. Why mention this? Because things like omelets end up being that super thin griddle style, while I much prefer the puffy omelette you might get at Michaels on the other side of Downtown. Same with the potatoes. At Coney they come out chunky and dry. Not a fan. And to that point, I have to say breakfast is just OK at Coney Island Hot Dog. Toast comes out pretty dry, ham is the only ingredient option for omelets besides cheese and the syrup for the pancakes (technically griddle cakes!) is clearly not maple. That said, what would you expect from a place called Coney Island Hot Dog? Delicious hot dogs right? Well, you can certainly get those and more! We recently tried the regular coney, and an all beef coney. Hands down the all beef are worth the extra upcharge, which is nominal as everything is dirt cheap here. The regular dog is limp and soft, and has been sitting out on a grill where they cook dogs ahead of time. The all beef is larger, firmer and is cut in half before it's aggressively grilled. These babies are cooked to order and come out much hotter than the regular dog. As for the chili sauce? Based on their kitchen (no burners) it's clearly not made in-house, but was still good. Just not great. But here's the thing. While the food is just what you'd expect from a greasy spoon (nothing to write home about) there is something about the time capsule atmosphere with the greek undercurrent that makes it SO Toledo, and somehow it lifts up the food. Due to the low prices, you end up seeing a really interesting cross section of Toledoans you might not get the opportunity to rub shoulders with at fancier joints and I think that's awesome. Today while we were eating our breakfast, the owner was behind the counter having a conversation in Greek with two gentlemen sitting at the bar waiting for their brunch. As I checked out I looked at the griddle and noticed some vegetables not on the menu cooking off. I asked the owner what he was making, and he described a delicious healthy Greek inspired egg dish with peppers, squash, eggs and sausage. I was someone disappointed I couldn't partake but also loved the glimpse into another world. And that's what Coney Island Hot Dog is. Another world. read more

This Coney Island does it right! It's not a fancy high end upity atmosphere - it is however a old school Coney Island! If you are in Toledo stop by - if you don't, frankly you missed out on a great historical experience. Better than any chain place can offer this diner when you walk in you are greeted like family and their is no doubt in my mind why this - one of the oldest running restaurants in Toledo still exists. It's like stepping back in time - well cared for and a must see. The grills are open and old style - the help super kind. Nancy, being the best server at the diner - never let my cup of coffee run low. The owner cooks and if you are fortunate his friends will pop in and you can listen to them speak Greek - a great experience in itself. This diner surprisingly has beer and mixed drinks as well. We were there for breakfast so we skipped that. We started with coffee (delicious) and cola with hash browns, sausage, omelette, and hot cakes all made to order and our bill - sit down no lie - just over $20 no kidding! It's Old School Baby. Love the food and the staff. When I come to town on business I always stop in.

Garbage. Owner was nice, waitess was snarky. Was in the middle of taking my order and decided to socialize with someone. Missed the order completely. Asked for plain chili, got bean chili. Chili came in a tiny little bowl and was cold. Ice cold. Beans galore. Waitress got nasty with me. Place is dark and seedy. The first Michigan coney coming from the south is Delta Coney Island. Don't waste your time. Find a Leo's or Senate and go that route. Theres also Toma coney Island in Lincoln Park. Thats the real deal. read more

Exploring local restaurants while working downtown this week, I needed a quick establishment within walking distance for lunch today, and decided to give Coney Island Hot Dog a try. On entering the restaurant, I paused, unsure if I should take a seat or if I needed to order first at the counter. Looking up from her grill, the short order cook saw my confusion and told me that I could either pick a table if I wanted to eat there, or place an order at the register if I wanted it to-go. Sitting down at a table, I had just enough time to peruse the menu before the waitress came to take my order: I selected two coney dogs with cheese, a side of coleslaw, and a Coca-Cola. My total bill came to $7.90, which is a good price for lunch downtown. Décor at the restaurant is pretty utilitarian, with a television (set to the daytime soaps) and what looks like a full bar (maybe in the evenings they are a bar and grill?). Being a straightforward order (you know, ordering hot dogs from a hot dog restaurant), my food was ready pretty quickly (I only had enough time to exchange a couple of text messages with friends arranging my Tuesday and Wednesday lunches). While the coleslaw was nothing to write home about, the coney dogs were very good. Additionally I was very happy that the waitress brought me a second soda without me having to ask. Overall I rate the restaurant as being Very Good, and will definitely come back. read more

They are in a great location, they just need to invest some money into updating. The building is in okay condition, but looks like it was built many decades ago. The food was only okay, I couldn't believe they actually had gyros here. But the waitress was really nice to us and I think that she is the only reason why I give this restaurant a star at all. They need a new menu, new equipment. The only good thing about this place was the pop and people. read more

This place no one uses gloves and please do not ask for more than 1 hot dog because they streach them across there arms to there arm pits with no protection at all. under health laws this is highly illegal. And the wait staff needs a attitude adjustment they are mean as hell. read more

Okay food, the older waitress we had was TERRIBLE! We had to call to her 3x to get her attention. I asked for a to go cup for my soda and she said no we don't do that VERY RUDELY and walked away. I thought she was joking and asked if she was serious. So then I asked if I could at least get a refill. She sat at the counter eating her own lunch with her back to the other customers and we had to call to her to get our check and she came over and just slapped it in front of us and walked away. I've been here before and waitress I had last time was much much nicer and very attentive to her customers. WILL NEVER GO BACK, did not tip and had a bad experience. read more
