I went to Alfred at Confidence for many years, and felt that he was trustworthy and fair. However, an error on his part has now cost me thousands of dollars, as well as huge hassles, so I must sadly give him a low rating and I will not be patronizing his business ever again. I had a "check engine" light go off on my Subaru Outback. Brought it to Confidence, and Alfred tried changing one thing to see if it would solve the problem. It didn't, so back I came. He did some more testing, and told me the car needed a new catalytic converter. (The car was under 8 years/80,000 miles). I did not know that the EPA requires a warranty for cats .... And supposedly, neither did Alfred. He told me that getting a non-Subaru cat would be much less expensive, and I gave him the go-ahead. Well, without telling me, he ended up parcelling the job out to his friend in the next door shop. The "friend" put in the new cat, and within 2 weeks the check engine light was back on. It was when I brought the car back for the 3rd time, that I discovered Alfred's shop hadn't done the work. Meanwhile, my husband looked up info on cats, and lo and behold, ours should have still been under warranty. Alfred and his "friend" had already tossed the original cat.... They ended up hatching an elaborate plot to try and rectify the situation. They put in what they told us was a genuine (used) Subaru cat; but since the part did not match the vehicle, the Dealership would not honor the warranty (understandably). After several trips to the Dealership, with no luck in persuading them otherwise, we were stuck replacing the cat to the tune of $2,000. OUCH!! All of this could have been avoided if Alfred /his friend had had the basic knowledge that we've since learned is common knowledge among garage owners/operators. I am considering taking him to small claims court to try and get some of the money back. read more

Within an hour of dropping of my car, I got a phone call letting me know that it was a minor repair, everything was fixed. I repaired my 1989 Honda Prelude at another shop 3 days ago for work my mechanic didn't do, which turned out not to be the transmission after all, but I decided to test his work for quality. I had to take the car back the next day because it was still leaking. That was yesterday. When I started my car this morning the check-engine light came on immediately. The engine choked, white smoke was billowing out the exhaust, and the engine was struggling. The new mechanic was more than willing to help when I called, but he said he was so swamped he couldn't look at it or work on it until tomorrow. So, I called Alfred at Confidence Auto, my mechanic for the last 30 years (and 2 cars). He reassured me the check-engine light probably didn't signal a problem that would cause the car to stall on the 1 mile trip to Confidence so he could look at it. When I got there, he thoroughly checked the engine which was racing rhythmically throttling high/low as I briefed him that the engine had been pressure-washed to trace the leaking, the power steering reservoir had been replaced, 2 leaking power steering hoses were replaced, and the power steering system flushed. Confidence Auto was also absolutely swamped, but Alfred still took the time to check over my engine thoroughly to see if there was anything he could do. First he checked the fluids. When he checked the radiator there was no fluid in it at all! (I called the other mechanic and asked if he had to drain it? No). After refilling the radiator with coolant, the engine stopped racing and the idle returned to normal all by itself. Then, Alfred noticed I had a leak in my heater hose and coolant was leaking from there. Though at first he suspected possible damaged sensor/s because of the pressure wash, the coolant refill and leaking heater hose were clearly the problems. He was surprised the other mechanic hadn't checked the fluids before giving my car back to me. Though he was very busy, he worked me in, fixed my car, and I was able to get back to work that day. Confidence Auto is a tightly knit organization of talented, hard-working mechanics. They have always done masterful, trustworthy work, which is always fully guaranteed and road-tested. They have always demonstrated the highest integrity and never done unnecessary work. I cannot possibly recommend them highly enough to equal what they deserve in terms of honors and talent. They are the greatest! If the others have caused you to question, I suggest you go there to get all your work done. (But he doesn't do transmissions). Ladies can also feel confident they will be treated fairly. read more
