Based on my visit yesterday, here's why I do not recommend this restaurant: - The free-range chicken was too chewy and didn't taste fresh - The fish in BOTH fish dishes we ordered didn't taste fresh. Fresh fish has flavour, these fish did not. - The fried rice was bad. The carrots were still raw, and it tasted like something made by someone who has never made fried rice. Service: - Several requests (e.g. additional settings) had to be repeated several times before taken care of. - The staff member took the apparently unclaimed cups of tea from our table and brought them to guests at other tables!!! BIG no-no. He also held them by the rim (we all know front of house staff handle nasty things). - Staff are not friendly. read more

Usual spot for noodles with my inlaws... I wouldn't say it's the best I've ever had, but not too bad. Had the black bean chicken with crispy noodles and fish congee. My girlfriend and I passed by Congee Noodle King a couple of times and decided to give it a try. We came on a holiday for lunch and the place was packed. The line reached all the way outside. Luckily within 10 minutes or so, we were able to secure a table. We noticed that practically everyone ordered congee with Chinese donuts, but we didn't feel like it at the time so we ordered the beef brisket chow mein, duck noodle soup and a side of deep fried tofu with spicy garlic. The food arrived faster than expected so we were excited, but once we had our first bite, we were extremely disappointed. The first was the deep fried tofu. It was so soggy! It was soaking in it's own juices and oil! What's the point of deep frying something if it's not crunchy!? Other places' deep fried tofu are nice and dry and crispy. On the bright side, the tofu dish was flavourful, but I have a sinking suspicion that they sprinkled a tiny bit of MSG on it. Then we sank our teeth in the beef brisket chow mein and again, we were disappointed. The sauce had barely any flavour and the noodles were too soft. The beef had the most flavour and was quite delicious, but as soon as we ate all the beef, it became bland. Finally, the duck noodle soup was pretty bland as well and the meat didn't taste like it was marinated that well. The noodles however was cooked well. We ordered rice noodles with it. To make things worse, the service was unrefined at best. There was a bus lady pushing along her cart around the restaurant and picked up dirty plates. She rubbed the dirty trays on me twice as she passed by our table without even saying or mumbling anything! Another time was when a waitress grabbed the chili sauce bottle on our table without even asking! The pricing was average for a Chinese place. All in all, there are a lot more Chinese places out there that have better dishes and better services for the same price. My girlfriend and I will give this place one more chance. The next time we come, we'll be ordering a congee dish and see if this place really is a congee noodle king. read more

I always drive by this place to and from work and it's always full so I finally decided to give it a try last night for a late-night snack. Absolutely delicious! The inside is actually not too bad considering it's a Chinese place. Will absolutely try again. Had the Beef Brisket Noodle Soup, quite delicious. My friends and I once ordered their string beans dish and we found a suspicious red stain on the corner of the plate. AIDS, anyone? I wasn't deterred because that was the only instance I found anything wrong with Congee Noodle King. In short, this place has well-cooked Chinese food in generous portions and the setting is extremely spacious. Went to Congee Noodle King with a friend to have Christmas Day dinner. I can now claim to have had some of the worst Chinese food ever. I don't come by this statement without some considerable lifetime experience. I am a born and raised Vancouverite, and have been eating out at a broad selection of Chinese restaurants since the early 60's. Ming's, Yen Lock, Ho Inn, Green Door, On On, Flamingo, New Castle, Pink Pearl, On Lock, Bill Kee, Peninsula, Hon's, Western Lake. Just to mention a few. The meal...The worst crab ever. $50.00 for a dry, impossible to remove the meat from the the shell. When one did get the meat out, it was all shreaded and dry. This happens when the crab is old, keep in a tank far too long, has been dead, near death, or frozen. It took so much time and effort to try and eat it, the rest of our dishes became cold durring the work out. All the other dishes, except for the small bowl of scallop & Chinese mushroom congee which was OK, were just awful. The Kung Pao chicken was unrecognizable as such. It had few pieces of small diced chicken, mostly onions, celery, and peanuts in an overly soy sauced coating. The supposed Sliced beef in Satay sauce on fried noodle, was covered in yet another over soy sauced, greasy, corn starched concoction. Nothing close to a Satay. Total price for this Christmas nightmare for two people was $95.00 with tip $110.00. I can now claim to have been to this place on two occasions. FIRST & LAST! You have now been given fair warning. By the way, I took my chefs training in 1976, apprenticed at both the Hotel Vancouver and Banff Spings Hotel from '76- '78, and have been cooking for nearly 50 years. Next time you want to go for Chinese food, find any list of, or site that has a list of restaurants. Close your eyes, wave your hand over it, touch it with your index finger, and go to that restaurant. I guarantee it will be better than this place! read more

We ordered 4 dishes and the worst on the list was the "honey garlic chicken" smelled so bad and there was no honey. We made them take t back yet they still charged us for it. The beef chow mien was ok. Took 15min to get a seat. After we got a seat it took them 10min to give a menu. Everyone was all over the place and we didn't just have one waitress. read more

It is very disappointing place. Try not to go here, they demand tips when the service is horrible. They do not have enough staff working there. They do not even pay attention to the tables but demand 20% tips when there is no service. The owner does not care and when order is not right they make you pay for it. The staff is very rude. They took orders from people that came in after us and still didn't come to our table. We waited half an hour before we decided to leave. It seems that the congee at this location is slightly inferior to the Congee Noodle House on Broadway; not as thick and slightly different flavour. Not that's it's bad, because the Congee Noodle House on Broadway has the best congee in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland for the matter. read more

I used to come here a lot, food was decent and prices are good. No complaints. But lately, it feels like what decent food it once was is now something that you sort of inhale to survive lunchtime hunger. As a connoisseur of greasy chinese spoons (and finding out this place is related to the Broadway congee place), I have to say this location is disappointing. I've been here a few times, and their cooking is not up to snuff. Items I've had include: wonton noodle soup west lake soup house fried noodle fried rice Its missing that special je nais se quoi. Had ordered for take out one of each soup noodle, congee and roll steamed rice noodle. a 4 for the noodle texture and its wonton and sui qua (yes both large and lots of shrimps). Give a mere 2 for the watery congee and salty taste, look very consistence when hot but overnight, could barely see any rice residue on the bottom, mostly starchy water. Ok it got its 2 points for portion of fish slices. a 1 if not a zero for the steamed rice noodle, why ? upon trying to rinse off oil from it, my palm is soaked with this thick layer of oil that took more than many washes and soap to wash off - asked master chef (aka my mom) she said it was pork fat !!! I had same from other places, most use vegetable oil to prevent layer from sticking but pork fat oil !!! a going back ? just for the noodle, but surely not the congee on the menu. read more

Definitely a place where service is lacking. The waitresses there scowl at you when you ask them for anything even when you come in to eat. Food is ok not fantastic. This was our first time there. Probably won't go there again with family especially old ladies who are fussy about good manners. Coming here when you're under the weather is good. Here, the turnaround time on the tables is quick. No need to stand around and wait to be seated especially when you're sick. And also, when you just want a quick lunch, you come here. There seemed to be more people waiting to pick up their lunch than those who were waiting to be seated. I came for the congee as it was probably the only tolerable dish I could stomach. The rest of the menu isn't too bad. The chow mein is on par with similar medium sized noodle establishments in Vancouver. But, don't expect to find anything too unique here. read more

This place and the one on broadway are my go to Congee spots. Good congee, good prices, big menu and quick service.

I wish I still lived in the collingwood area because of this restaurant! I miss eating at Congee Noodle King. The service is terrible but the food is delicious!! I recommend their congee and spicy fried squid. The prices are reasonable and the food is decent because it is often packed compared to other chinese restaurants in the area. Bring cash as it is a cash only restaurant. Thankfully there are several banks in the surrounding area if you do forget. read more

My friend and I were craving congee big time, so we went to Congee Noodle King because it was a half way point for the both of us. The texture of the congee was really smooth and it was pretty hot. I ordered the fish congee and there were lots of it in the bowl. We shared the panfried radish cake. It was pretty decent too. In the end we only chipped in $12 per person and we were full. If you are hoping to get food or service like Sun Sui Wah (which I detest) or Kirin, you are looking in the wrong place. This is the Denny's/IHOP/the tiny filthy diner that serve you comfort food when you have a hang over. In addition to the congees, the beef stew is by far the best I've had in town. First off I must say I am an out of towner but love traveling and trying local spots. I am a ABC New Yorker and have traveled to many cities including Hong Kong where I believe they have the best Asian food and choices. So I was happy to see and taste some great duck, roast meats, and congee (we ordered both Sai Pan and sliced beef), and don't forget the fried crueller at Congee Noodle King. The duck was tasty and not loaded with salt nor tons of MSG. Same for the congee which in addition was of the perfect texture and consistency. The staff was not rude or nasty but they weren't super attentive as if you were at Eleven Madison Park Restaurant in NYC. I don't expect them to be super attentive as after all this is a local congee nooodle house - so so service seems to be the norm in any of these establishments. So at least in my book great food and so-so service gets 4 out of 5 starts - which Congee Noodle King deserves in my book. read more

I love this place and I've been eating here ever since I was a kid. Their congee is really tasty, not like those watery one. I always get the congee with fish and pork. I like how tender the pork and how the fish is cook perfectly. Eating their congee on a rainy day is like a bonus. read more

I would give this place 5 stars except the service is terrible, hence the 4 stars. The servers will ignore you. The other negative is their food is loaded with msg so your throat will be super dry after the meal. As such, you know the food taste good when there is always a line up. If its decent cheaper chinese food you want this is the place! Most of the time day or night they are busy and mostly Asians which is your guarantee the foods good. After 9pm the dishes go on sale (smaller dishes) but you can try more stuff out! Excellent curry beef brisket, spicey pork green beans, my favourote is their Shrimp dumpling and noodle soup .... The food here is definitely not as good as the Broadway location even though they try to duplicate their menu. I have eaten here a few times already so I can comment on their noodles, fried rice, chinese dishes. The wonton noodles that I had here were very salty and I got diarhea as well. As for the fried rice.. nothing to write home about. I think my wife could have made better ones. And the Chinese dishes are oily and overly seasoned as usual in all chinese restaurants. Overall the food is not terrible, but it's also not as good as many other restaurants that I've eaten at. They also overcharged us on an item so watch the bill carefully. read more

Ahhh, Congee Noodle King. Where to start. I've actually visited this establishment twice previously with friends, but this was my first trip there with family. What a disaster. First off, the food was great for the price, and came in generous portions. I highly recommend the bitter melon and chicken with black bean sauce. And of course the congee. But unfortunately...the service. Oh god, the service. I'm fairly certain that concentration camps had better "service" than CNK, if you can even call it such. To begin with, nobody came to seat us when we entered the restaurant, even though there were several empty tables available. After finally being seated, we had quite a bit of trouble flagging down a waitress to take our order, even though the place wasn't even busy (we went at ~10pm). Well, no matter. Maybe they really dislike tips. Then the waitress arrives, looking like her husband recently died. She takes our order, and disappears. Literally, she did not make another appearance for about half an hour. We had to flag down a hapless busboy to bring us the soup, because apparently they "forgot"...or something. Said busboy would then have to bring out the rest of our food. Poor guy, I hope he moves on to bigger and better restaurants. Then, when it came time to pay, we had to flag down another lady who was cleaning the dishes from the adjacent table. At least they gave me my change back in a timely fashion. Had to wait about 30 mins. wasn't sure about the food at first but since there was a long lineup the food must not be bad. There was lots of big table. They have good food and I'm pretty sure this is everyone's go-to place for congee. The food comes out fairly quick but not all at the same time. Sometimes you get your appetizers at the end, it depends on what the kitchen decides to cook first. If it's busy, good luck getting a table if you're not Chinese. They are not a service oriented restaurant so don't expect to be treated like a queen. I've never tried take out, but that might be what I'd do the next time I want food from them. read more

Worse restaurant experience I've ever had. Chinese donuts were cold. Food was average at best. Service was as bad as it gets. When we tried to put our name in for a table we were initially ignored. When they finally took our name, people who just arrived were seated before us. They refilled everyone's tea in the restaurant except for us. When we asked for more tea they ignored us, then when we got another server's attention, she was reluctant. These are just the highlights. Despite how horrible the service was we left a 10% tip. They deserved 0. They came back to the table and repeatedly told us to leave a better tip. read more

Good food, but poor service. They seem to be able to talk to Chinese, Mandarin, etc. fluently, but can't speak well with English. I've been here with my family a few times, and we politely excuse ourselves for some help or if we're ready to order, like any other restaurant. But they would ignore us, maybe say hello, but not come back to us and if thy do come back, usually after they help another group even if they requested service after us, I eve see them have a casual conversation with the clients! Even if the restaurant was packed. It was really annoying, and once, when there were no tables available, we were forced to sit with another family. I'm giving 1 star because there isn't a zero star. Literally my worst dining experience in lower mainland. First, it took a while to get a waitress to place our order. Second, it took 30 minutes for them to prepare a cold dish (the waitress didn't tell me it was supposed to be cold when taking our order) Third, the tastes of their congees and other food are below average. So at the end, we decided not to tip and never come back again. Guess what, the waitress took my money and disappeared. So I went to the counter and ask for my change. She asked for our receipt, but I already gave my receipt with the money. Then it took them a couple of minutes to figure out what I ordered and finally returned my change. A warning for you guys, if you look Asian but don't speak Cantonese (not Mandarin Chinese), don't bother coming in. They'll keep speaking Cantonese to you, if you cannot respond in Cantonese, they'll give you bad attitude. read more
