Came into town for business (that 'biz' was Magic: The Gathering related, for my kids) and we figured a Jersey diner is always a safe bet to grab a bite to eat. Weirdly snug parking lot (especially harrowing when you had to back out into a busy street), and walking inside everything felt oddly tight and squished together. We were now a bit unsure on where we'd decided to stop since the diners closer to homebase are much bigger (and inviting) all around. But... we received our menus (too long/large for our table!) and when we saw the hundreds of choices available - our skepticism disappeared. I went with a sloppy joe (Jersey version) and it was massive. And delicious. One kid went with a grilled cheese, the other with a chicken sandwich. We eventually had to tap out and request a doggy-bag. Good eats. Good pricing. Great waitress (there's no one quite like a Jersey diner waitress that's equally kind and cool and gruff and "Kiss my grits!" - right?). If I found myself down this way again I'd definitely swing back in for 'Round Two'. read more

My parents have been regulars at the Kenilworth Diner since the 80s. It's a staple in the area for a reason, and I've tried the majority of the menu over the years. The new owners (for several years now) have done a great job of keeping the classics, and updating what was needed. Whether you get it to-go or eat in, service is impeccable. Recently I decided to try the chicken cordon blue sandwich and let me tell you - it may just be the best sandwich on the menu. Perfect ratio of swiss & ham to the fried chicken cutlets, on grilled rye bread. I was blown away by how good it was and will definitely hyperfixate on this sandwich for a while. Stopped in for breakfast - standard diner food Ordered: Coffee (basic diner coffee), Eggs, Toast, Taylor Ham (also known as pork roll depending on what part of Jersey you're in), Corn-Beef Hash (came with potatoes). Diner is clean, service is good - food is only ok - pretty much canned corn-beef & pork roll was burnt. I felt like whoever was doing the cooking really didn't care that they destroyed the Taylor Ham & it was a bummer that the waitress served it burnt. I guess no one cares ? Finally came in for a bite after living in Kenilworth for almost 3 years. It always seems kinda busy, so I never came in but have ordered delivery. We were very happy to find that it is a cute little diner and is very clean and tidy. The servers are also very friendly and accommodating. Now the food. I overly enjoyed my hash. It's my diner go to for breakfast. It had a great crust without drying out the middle and same goes for the home fries. My fiancée Omelet was so good she didn't talk to me while eating. The service was very attentive and the coffee free flowing. We ordered breakfast specials, which consisted of juice (not a tiny glass), the main course and beverage. I had the Western Omelette. It was a large plateful, with the eggs and potatoes covering the dish. With my toast of choice it was a filling meal. As a typical diner, their menu is quite extensive and I believe anyone can find something to eat. The place is very clean and comfortable and even their bathrooms were spotless. They are on the Main Street in Kenilworth. They have a parking lot & street parking too. The facility is clean & well maintained (dining area, bathroom & parking lot). The food was very good and we received what we ordered. The waitress did a good job for us. It's been years since I've been in Kenilworth. We came here with a friend who got off the red-eye at Newark and we wanted to have a good place to sit and talk before returning them back to Newark for the next flight. It's about 15 min drive. I met a former co-worker here for breakfast on a late Tuesday morning. I settled on the blueberry pancakes, a side of turkey sausage, and coffee. My co-worker had 2 eggs over easy, sausage, home fries, and coffee. My pancakes consisted of three very large pancakes, stuffed with fresh blueberries. The turkey sausage consisted of 4 thin links. Syrup was the plastic packets and not authentic real maple. Some diners will charge you extra for the real maple syrup which I don't mind paying. My co-worker enjoyed her egg dish. As coffee snobs, the coffee was very good. There was parking in their private lot as well as ample street parking. Service was excellent as always and friendly. Prices are more than reasonable. There is nice little bar section to sit in the front of the restaurant and a dining area in the back. I'll be back soon enough. read more

Looked up a few diners and decided to give this one a try. We visited the diner on Monday morning for quick post birthday breakfast. Service was ok, no complaints. We were seated as soon as we walked in. The food was very basic and bland. We ordered the French toast special with eggs and bacon and a side order of home fries. The French toast was very dry. Just tasted like toasted bread with cinnamon. The home fries had no flavor at all. It tasted like boiled then fried potatoes. Overall this diner seems to cook with just the bare minimum of effort. Wish I could've enjoyed the food to write a great review. Update to Owner's Response: OMG this owner is miserable! LOL Tried to keep the review polite and this guy is such a sore loser because I said his food sucks. I always check the reviews and saw it was a mix so I said maybe these are salty customers. Now I can see why.... This guy can't take constructive criticism at all. Tone at the top is key in ANY business, and the tone here is misery. I don't know everything about the restaurant business but I do like to enjoy my food. Our breakfast tasted like hospital food. Now that I'm being fully transparent, my coffee cup came dirty with a lipstick stain. The waitress addressed once we brought it to her attention. Cozy place in Kenilworth with good service but breakfast was disappointing. No hash browns on the menu so I went with the french toast, eggs and bacon with home fries on the side. The bacon came balled up, the potatoes tasted like cardboard and the french toast was just not tasty at all. Best part of this place is when my wife wrote an honest review, the owner responded with a pitiful miserable comment. Shows a lot of character... Diners are abundant in Jersey, but it's hard to find a good one. My fiancé and I were running errands in the area on MLK Jr. Day, so we were looking for a lunch spot. A quick Yelp search presented me with Kenilworth Diner with pretty good reviews. We got there at around 12:30 and we were in and out in less than an hour (thanks to the great service). I ordered a patty melt, which comes with fries and a small thing of cole slaw. It was my first patty melt in life, and I really enjoyed it! I ordered it medium rare and that was exactly how it came out. I was going to swap the rye bread it came on for white but I'm glad I didn't because the rye was a great complement. My only complaint was that the bread had way too much butter on it, but that was my fault for not telling them to ease up on it beforehand. The sandwich was really filling, so I was only able to finish half. Fiancé had the crispy buffalo chicken wrap. He had the lunch special so this also came with fries, a bigger thing of cole slaw, and a French onion soup for a $1.50 upgrade. This might be the best $1.50 we've ever spent because the French onion soup was excellent. The cheese on top was nice and gooey and melty, and the soup itself had a great flavor and wasn't overly salty, like most French onion soups tend to be. I'm not a huge fan of buffalo chicken but he liked the wrap. He was also only able to finish half, so we had lunch for the next day. The diner does smell a bit musty in the back section where we were sitting, so try to sit in the front if you can. Not a deal breaker though so I definitely want to come back and try some of their other food. read more

This diner is an absolute joke. The waitress we had didn't ask once how our food was nor acknowledged us once the ENTIRE time. The food tasted worse than frozen breakfast warmed up in a microwave. The forks and knifes we received were entangled with old food which probably would have tasted better than what we ordered. How despicable. Don't get me started with the owner of this restaurant going on rants with the people that review his diner which is worse than a toddler. Just sad. How unprofessional of him.. this place should be shut down. I wouldn't be surprised if there's rats in his kitchen. To the owner, grow up.
