I really wanted an authentic Italian sub and I found it here in Conte Di Savoia. It is a great store with few groceries inside. The store is clean, spacious and the staff in the counter is so nice! There is a option between hot and cold sandwiches but since it was m first time I just chose their cold sandwich which is their Italian sub. They also have a huge portion choices and since I am alone I just chose their 6 inches. It was served quickly. It looks so simple and it was definitely huge. It has a perfect amount of ham and veggies. The taste is just so good. Simple but delicious that is the only word I can describe it It is also cheap considering the huge portion and I actually like it. Will definitely be back in here and try everything on their menu. Noooooo, come on, this cant be for real? I'm the only one giving this place a lower rating? Wow, either you folks have brainwashed into thinking "If its on Taylor it must be Italian!" or you all set the bar pretty low to begin with. First off, the layout is atrocious. Dont get me started. Its awful, and the little room BEHIND the deli counter is a totally stupid idea. I couldnt tell if that was a work area for employees only or not, until these two guys off the street just sauntered back there. If you want something to drink though, that's where you have to go. Also the whole checkout counter area is a ridiculous waste of space. Everything is so overpriced I had dirt on my chin from my jaw hitting the floor so many times. $9.50 for a jar of pasta sauce? $8 for a bag of dried pasta? Look folks you do the math. Thats $17.50 - a plate of good HOMEMADE pasta and sauce will run you $10 at any restaurant on that street - and you dont have to do the dishes afterwards. Cannoli was...runny? THAT'S never happened before! Yikes. And if you dont get hot peppers on your sandwich at the deli, you are getting nothing better than Subway. Shredded lettuce, pink tomatoes and salty deli meat - all for $4.50 for a small. But hey, I can sympathize - pickins are mighty slim on Taylor for Italian groceries. They also had a nice little selection of beverages in the refrigerator section and I took notice of a bunch of Italians wines scattered throughout along with other Italian imports. They definitely do decent deli sandwiches here. Fast service, fresh ingredients, fair prices, and size-wise you get quite a bit for your buck. Overall it's a well oiled machine of an Italian deli. If I had any criticism at all it'd be that the selection is a little plain. There's not much outside of the standard lettuce, onion, tomato, and mayo except for giardinera. Not necessarily a bad thing since all the stuff they do offer is awesome, but if you're looking for more of the works on your 8 inch sub you might be disappointed. Other that sandwiches it's got all sorts of snacks, drinks, and other random stuff that you'd find at other delis like this. Overall a winner with friendly staff to boot! read more

This place is incredible. I walked in one day while strolling around Little Italy, not long after I moved to Chicago, and it was an excellent decision. I'm almost full Italian, and their prosciutto panini is as good as it gets. For like, $7, you get a HUGE sandwich made with Turano bread (awesome), lightly brushed with oil, toasted to perfection... add some paper-thin slices of salty prosciutto, fresh mozzarella cheese and some shredded lettuce to crisp it up, and you've got yourself one heck of a lunch. Great deals - make sure to enjoy the sandwich with a bottle of Orangina -- you'll get the full "Italian" experience. The atmosphere is pretty much what you'd expect for an authentic deli/grocery store. There are a few crowded aisles crammed with imported Italian goodies like wine, pasta, sauces, even the pickled eggplant strips that my Italian mother loves so much. There's a deli counter where you can order sandwiches, meats and some salads, and there are some refrigerators and freezers with fresh pasta and other dishes. There's a small room, kind of in the back, with drinks and cheeses. Another great deal - I got a huge bag of fresh basil for $1.25 and another bag of polenta (perfect for the bottom of pizza!) for $1.50. They're by the register. One last note - I don't live anywhere close to Conte di Savoia. I have to take two trains to get here, and it is completely, one hundred percent worth it. read more

This is a really cute store complete with a fresh sandwich deli. I love walking by in the summertime and seeing their giant basil plants for sale - just walk by, close your eyes and smell the sweet, sweet basil... Their sandwiches are good - pretty good - I tend to order the Hot Italian Sandwich (I wish I could order a Hot Italian Man there...) and they do a good job. The meats are fresh and good seasoning. My only complaint is their bread. Maybe I'm just so obsessed with the bread they use at Bari Foods that this sandwich here is just subpar. Take some time to shop around the store to discover all their homemade items in the frozen section or browse through their great selection of imported olive oil, sardines, anchovies and pastas! It's too bad not every neighborhood has a specialty grocery store like this, with the convenient, tasty and very reasonably-priced lunch items, frozen hand-made Italian pasta, and the extraordinary choices of other specialty foods. A nice grounded little gathering spot for the Little Italy community. And there's always a fat Chicago cop or two around to serve and protect. And to lend credibility to the good food reputation of the place. I met a friend for lunch whilst in the medical district just west of Conti. We both took advantage of the lunch special of a small Italian sub, chips and a drink. $4.50. Can't beat that. Almost half the cost of the Potbelly equivalent. The sub was nicely packed with several deli meats and cheese. They also have great salads, and things like eggplant subs which you wouldn't find at a standard sub shop. I always find something else to take home here. Fresh basil plants, a jar of big fat capers, some EVOO in a special containers or some rare balsamic vinegar for gifting. And cheese!!! I love the old word intimate, New York (or Hoboken) vibe of this place. Very unpretentious and always a great spot for lunch on Taylor Street. read more

It's like an old school Italian deli, with a section of tables so you can order at the counter and then eat in. When it finally occurred to me to look in little italy for a real italian /hoagie/, I (1) smacked myself for not thinking of it sooner and (2) went to Conte di whatever for what ended up being the best hoagie I'd had since I ventured west. I've had Conte bookmarked for a few months after seeing it hyped up on Yelp, as were Bari and Graziano. Graziano was the reigning king of the Italian sub in my mind before I ever stepped foot into Conte. I had killer subs from Graziano twice before being not as enthralled with the third sub I got there recently. Something just wasn't right with that last sub. It was likely just a one off misstep. Still, I felt as a result that I would give Conte a try. It also helped that Conte is open on Sundays. None of the other Italian sub joints in the area are. So off to Taylor Street I went. Conte is similar to Bari, as it's an Italian grocery. I took a look at some of the pasta sauces and found them to be around in line with the local big grocers. They also have all the other ingredients for your Italian cooking needs. I could see coming to Conte to shop for such ingredients if you're cooking from scratch or in the area and just need a few things. I don't think I'd go out of my way for these items myself, but I'm not Mother at home whipping up some old world Italian. So I simply ordered my Italian subs and called it a day. One ham. One turkey. One for now, and one for later. Great Sunday grub. The bread they use at Conte is the shorter, wider type Italian bread rather than the long and skinny used at Graziano. Overall, I loved both subs and would say it's a real horse race between Conte and Graziano. Conte might even be a smidge better than Graziano, depending on the day. Two large, delicious subs for ten bucks and change? I'll be back. As I left Conte, I said hi to Mother presiding over all at the table in the window. I imagine she had some wonderful old world Italian sauce simmering on the stove top right around the corner for later that evening. I didn't get an invite, but she smiled and said hello right back. This place is really a two-in-one restaurant and specialty food shop. Based on the restaurant alone, I'd give it a 3. The sandwiches are pretty good - I've had the Italian, the Tuna Salad, and the Turkey Pastrami. The Turkey Pastrami is may favorite. And believe it or not, I kind of like the regular wheat bread over their Italian roll. But that's personal preference. Make sure you get extra hot peppers - they're pretty good and have good heat. The service is only medium friendly, especially since I'm there every Thursday at an off-meal time, so you'd think maybe they'd chat it up while I'm waiting or something, but oh well. Now, what makes it a 4, is the grocery section. Sooooo awesome! I could walk through there for hours. If there's any Italian product you've ever looked for, try here! And their selection of both fresh/frozen and dried pasta is amazing. The pesto stuffed gnocchi was seriously delicious. The minute you walk into this little market, that's in the heart of Little Italy in Chicago, your eyes will light up like mine did when you see all of the peppers, pestos, sausages, salami's, cheeses, homemade pasta, and umpteen different sub sandwiches you can choose from. Love it's simple, no-frills, and quick service here. They carry some fresh bread from D'Amato's Bakery here as well which is tasty. I tried the tomato bread that was mmmm... delish. Absolutely love this place. I agree with everyone who says it's a hidden gem. I live close by, and I frequent it once a week. It's more of a neighborhood market, with fresh meats, cheeses and pastas. They also have anything Italian you could want, like frozen/dried pastas, oils, sauces, bread, fresh basil, etc. It's all reasonably priced as well. My favorite part of the store definitely has to be the fresh cheeses. I can get a half pound block of fresh creamy feta (way better than the crumbled chain store version) for $3. They also make sandwiches fresh to order! I've had the mozzarella/veggie one and the grilled eggplant, and both were fantastic. The sandwiches are also reasonably priced, and you can order whatever size you want. The staff is also great, and are extremely friendly. read more

quaint little grocery/deli with an interesting assortment of items (I would have bought some stuff but I didn't want to carry it around walking). We were eating there so I got a veggie sandwich (artichoke and eggplant) with sweet peppers. It was pretty drenched in oil but was tasty. The cole slaw was over-mayo'd but was pretty good, too. I also got a Berghoff root beer. If I ate meat I probably would have appreciated it more, but if I were in the neighborhood I might pop in again for a sub and an Italian soda to eat on the patio in the sun. read more

I'm definitely going back, had a pretty good sandwich EXCEPT FOR THE BREAD. I don't know if I just had an over-baked piece for my sandwich but I know my Turano (which I was under the impression they used) bread and this was not it, didn't look like it, didn't taste like it. I'm from Berwyn home of Turano and well, sigh, this just was too dark and dry which is why I only gave 3 stars. The sandwich size and other flavors and textures were so good. Loved the convenience of on-line ordering and going straight to the register (yes, you still have to wait your turn behind all those waiting to pay) I had the Italian sub and added roasted red peppers and again - except for the bread it was so good! I guess I have to go back this week and see if I can change my rating! Really looking forward to trying a Panini as well. There was seating inside and out, which on such a beautiful day I hated to bypass but I had to get back to work. Service was fast and friendly and there's a small park like area just feet away heading East where you can sit as well and enjoy your lunch. read more

The best Italian sub shop this city has. The sandwiches are all amazing. My personal favorite is the Rosie with a couple extra dollars worth of prosciutto di Parma on it. It still under $10 for a large sandwich I think it's 10". The stuffed cherry peppers are amazing. All try e cold cuts are the best imports and all the rest of the grocery story is all the best quality. I been coming here for years. I go over 20 miles from my house to eat here. It's not easy to find a good, old-school sandwich in the city. My partner decided to take me here as we were running around town. And when you walk in, you can't tell they serve food but you can tell they serve it. It's more market than deli, but I was not daunted. All the way to the back, I ordered my capicolla sandwich with all the trimmings and a small salad. We went to the small sitting area toward the front, sunk our teeth in, and was in sandwichland in no time. The sandwich itself was very tasty and well proportioned. I didn't feel hungry after I left. When all you crave is that simple sub, come here. They are a small Italian grocery store deli, with fresh meats and fresh bread. Their subs are quite affordable and the veggies on the sub are always fresh. They have a giardiniera that boasts large chunks of veggies that aren't too diced up. My only gripe about these subs is that I wish the Italian sub had a cured ham or a saltier ham to help add some pop to the "Italian" in the Italian sub.. They have an amazing selection of olives and cheeses and other fine Italian imported products. They have Gelato for $1. They also have a sister location further west on Taylor close to Western. read more

I have been going to Conti at least once a week since I moved to the neighborhood 2 years ago. The deli is great. The subs are a great value - cheap as Subway and NO comparison. The classic Italian is always good, but I am partial to the fresh mozza with sun dried tomatoes. Great selection of sides to go along with your sandwich. We had an antipasto platter on Thanksgiving and it was delicious & reasonably priced. As a neighborhood resident, it is also a great place to pop in & pick up groceries. They have fresh bread delivered everyday - rolls, french loaves, and big Italian loaves. They always have all of the ingredients for any Italian meal - imported pasta & tomatoes, olive oils, balsamic, wine, etc. They have great impulse buys here & there too - like fresh figs in season and lots of imported sweets. And the freezer case has really tasty options as well if you don't want to cook yourself. read more

Stopped in at Conte during Festa Italiana (Little Italy street festival) on a Sunday evening. Their booth outside was only selling meatball subs and I was really craving an Italian sub so I just walked into the store and ordered it from the counter. Great choice! There was no wait inside and I'm pretty sure the prices were cheaper in the store! They have a pretty extensive sandwich menu up on the wall and the prices are really cheap compared to many places in the city. They put a healthy amount of ham, pepperoni and salami on my sub and I added hot peppers for only 40 cents. Sandwich was great! Everyone working there was really nice and I got in and out in less than 5 minutes. I would love to come back to have another sandwich and check out the authentic Italian groceries stocking their shelves! read more
