Bread, cookies, and pastries are all showcased and it smells great. If you go during the afternoon during the week it won't be as crowded as it can get on the weekend. Everything here is terrific. Whenever I'm in the area I'll bring home a pound of assorted Italian cookies, I'll also grab rainbow cookies and cannolis. Their cannolis are terrific, some of the best in NY. Yes, NY, not just NYC. I think what makes their cannoli stand out amongst some of the best is their shell. It's always fresh and crispy. Their filling is a little more vanilla forward compared to other NY institutions version of the cannoli, so keep that in mind when trying one. I'll put it to you this way, if you like Italian pastries, especially cannolis make this place a destination to visit, give them a try and see how it ranks up compared to your favorites. And while you're there, take in the rest of Arthur Ave! Oh, I almost forgot. They have what my husband says are the best savoiardi cookies in the state. They're always fresh, soft, slightly chewy in the middle with a delicately crispy exterior. They're to die for with a hot cup of coffee.

Been buying all my cakes and pastries from Conti's for so many years. Everything they make is always so fresh, and their consistent- very reliable. The girls that work here are the best! Very helpful, super nice, no matter how hectic it is. The reason I took three stars away- and this is a damn shame- is that the owner or manager running the bakery (a younger, tall, bald guy) is a complete jerk. He's so rude to the customers! Looks at everyone as if he's doing them a favor. Luckily, I've never had a situation where I needed to deal with this man directly, but I've unfortunately witnessed horrible interactions. On one particular occasion, the bakery was super busy, and this elderly woman was speaking to the manager/owner about a mistake with her an order she had placed. He was exceptionally rude and dismissive, telling her to leave because he was to busy to deal with "such a ridiculous problem". The nerve! Luckily the lot of us jumped in to help her, some people, including myself, walking out, without making a purchase, with the woman who was visibly shaken. That was not the first time I had seen him argue with customers. It always seemed to be over special orders from what I've personally seen; but his aggressive behavior with this elderly woman was the last straw for me. I don't care how successful your business has been, you simply don't treat people that way! I don't care if he was having a bad day, if he was stressed, there is just no excuse for that type of arrogant, disrespectful behavior. The reason that place is still standing after all these years is because of loyal customers. Keep that nonsense up and this great establishment is, unfortunately, bound to fall. read more

The cake from this shop was on the pricey side for its size, and while it looked nice overall, the wafer paper decoration on top was a bit lop-sided and not as cleanly placed as expected. For the cost, I was hoping for a more polished presentation. The flavor itself was good, but it leaned heavily on the sweet side, which may not be for everyone. One of the biggest letdowns was the lack of strawberries in the cake. Given the flavor profile, I expected a better balance of fruit to cut through the sweetness, but there just weren't enough. That said, the overall texture was enjoyable, and I can see the appeal of their cakes for special occasions. Despite the minor flaws, the staff was incredibly kind and accommodating over the phone. They even went out of their way to print a cute calendar for us, which was a thoughtful touch. I used to live in this neighborhood two years ago, block away from Contis. So I'd always come in to get some stuff--banana muffin among my favorites. I travel back sometimes just to get things, but each time I do the service is worse and I won't be coming back again this time. Im standing there for 20+ minutes, being ignored by all workers who seem to be preoccupied just ignoring (given the fact that there's one girl in front of me). I notice this is EVERY TIME I come in now. They ignore their customers. I walked out this time. My dealings with Conti from beginning to end was first class and a wonderful experience. They were professional yet very friendly. They were also very responsive, especially given that I had a last minute request during the Thanksgiving period. Although they could not deliver on my initial request (only because it was so last minute and they didn't want to sacrifice quality), they worked with me on a custom cake that looked exquisite and tasted delicious. Technically they did call once, I reordered based on what they said was available but they canceled the new order as well. I try to support local businesses - even when the food isn't always the *best* (e.g. their large chocolate chip cookies occasionally have a soapy chemical aftertaste but their crumb cake is dense and delicious) which is why I kept ordering from them despite the cancellations. But even if the food is GREAT, if the customer's experience consistently sucks? If the service is subpar? That = a permanently lost customer.
