    Regular Homestyle French Fries
    Megan M.

The place is cute with a 50's diner feel. There are booths and tables. The booths are not padded so not a comfortable place to sit for longer than a hour and a half. We ordered the regular sized French fries for $9.95, we split them between four people and it was plenty, if you like salty fries you will have to add your own salt. I got the cheeseburger with lettuce, pickle and tomato. The lettuce was crunchy and fresh which I appreciated. The burger was a good size and delicious. We had attentive service and nice experience. I just don't like how you have to order fries seperately here.

First time here. Make sure you know or take a picture of your license plate number. They need it to confirm your parking if you park in the parking lot. Came at 2pm. Wasn't busy, only 2 other tables were occupied. Service was a little slow considering wasn't busy. But staff was eating their lunch it seemed at this time. Staff dressed in white nurse outfits. Food was definitely worth the wait though. Got large oreo malt. Which filled up the cup twice. Careful when you pour, it can come out really fast. Mushroom and Swiss was decent. Meat was a little dry, and didnt have much flavor, but a little salt and mayo helped. Fries were definitely amazing. I normally don't like fries but these were pretty well cooked. Recommend trying this place out.

Great old school diner at has a very classic menu! This pretty low frills, but perfect for a casual bite and perfect for kids! Found out that kids eat free on Monday and tuesday, so can't wait to go back for that. Their servers were all very young, but they did a decent job. We were surprised to find out that they don't stock malt vinegar and we all ordered a full basket of fries which was quite large. I would be a really easy offering to add to the menu. Also, custom dipping sauces like garlic aioli or cheesy sauce to go with the fries would be great!

Already went back and brought friends! The cheeseburger is seriously one of the best around and the malts are certifiably delicious. I love the classic diner ambiance and our service was great as always.

This was just how I remember it!!! Convention grill use to be my favorite place to go when I was a kid so I had to try it out again when it reopened! It feels exactly the same just looks a little cleaned up, maybe new paint? Looks great!!! We all got burgers and shared a regular fry. Hot tip, the regular fries were way too many for 4 people, could have sized down. As I'm gluten free I was excited they had gluten free buns and made my shake without malted milk!! Seriously I was so excited I could have all my faves still. The food prices are amazing but the quality is even better. You can't beat fresh cut fries! I made a custom shake, had to have their famous hot fudge and banana! Wow was it very banana forward but amazing! Make sure you make room for any of their ice cream treats. Also I got a half order of a malt and it was 2 full glasses, such a great deal!

It's a rare thing when a restaurant you love returns from the dead, but that's what happened at Convention Grill. Although it opened in 1934, it closed a few years ago, seemingly forever. However, they are now open at the same location and with what looks to be, the same menu (but with higher prices). Food: Between us, my wife and I had a cheeseburger ($12.90), a hamburger ($11.95) a half order of fries ($7.95), and a chocolate-coffee shake ($9.95). The hamburgers, although not overly large, have a great steak-like taste. The ratio of fat to lean was perfect, as was whatever cuts of beef they use. This is a top-notch burger! There are extra charges for cheese, tomato and lettuce, or any other ingredient. The hamburgers come with sliced pickles and a good-tasting bun. The portion of fries is enormous. We split the half-order and still had half of the huge basket left over. I recommend getting the "side order" fries for $5.95 (enough for two people). I'm sure the "regular size" would feed a little league team. The fries are skinny, skin-on fries that I suspect are fried twice. They have a great potato taste, are served fresh and hot, and are equal to the hamburgers in terms of quality. The shake was tasty, but a bit melty or overly liquid in my opinion. I don't think they are as good as the ones I have at Fifty's Grill, but they are still worth getting. The "large" fills two glasses, so it can be split. Honestly, I struggled with the rating, as to whether to give it four or five stars. For food, service, and ambiance, it deserves five stars. However, I do struggle with the price. For one hamburger, one cheeseburger, French Fries, and a shared milk shake, should this meal be $51.75, including tip and tax? That's a lot of money for lunch, considering what we ordered. I would love to know their prices before the pandemic and see what is the percent increase. Ultimately, I picked five stars because: 1. The quality of the food (and service) is excellent. 2. I would like to see this long-time fan-favorite restaurant do well. 3. The did not include any required junk-fees on the check. I do think it will be interesting as to how "price-elastic" customers are willing to be for eating basics such as hamburgers at a lunch place diner.

Absolutely great classic American Diner. Don't skip out on the legendary fries. Burgers are also fantastic! With about half an inch (or probably more) thickness, perfectly seasoned and just filling. Delicious chocolate malt shakes, too!

So glad they opened again, I used to come here years ago with family. They still live up to the hype. The burgers are great, fries are even better, and the malts are legendary. You have to get the Reeces add banana. They're just opening up again so expect a slight wait, plus the phone didn't work, but it was 100% worth the wait! They even kept the same look at before with the diner style seating up front. Welcome back Convention Grill!

The bad: Bloody Mary's were flat and expensive $13 each. No depth of flavor, thought we would give them a second chance. . Ordered croquette madame. Egg was severely undercooked - the egg white was gelatatinous and the bread way too thick, ham fatty and subpar, where were you Béchamel? I took a bite of my breakfast and he hands me a box at the end when I asked for the check--not asking if anything is wrong. Two bites out of the spring mix salad and sandwich. Bloody Mary full. $70 for a salad, madame croquette, slow service which is no problem. It's a tiny diner and around lunch time. No worries there. But uncomfortable dining service because we could feel the tension between the server and bartender. Again for me? NBD but my daughter did not appreciate this. The good: the Mediterranean salad was delicious according to my daughter. She had the same thoughts about the Bloody Marys. Super cute beer backs- pony miller high life. I brought the croque madame home and my son loved it. Went on and on about how amazing it was. In all fairness my adult kids loved their food. He did microwave it to cook the egg through. Yes I know I am picky because I worked in the restaurant industry for over 22 years. And I can make better food at home. I just expect a bit more if I am going to drop $70 for two lunch entrees and two drinks. Not including the tip. Bottom line: I would not go back for this very expensive diner that doesn't know how to properly cook simple things. Or chop veg. Or make a drink.

Solid service as well they're just so sweet and local. Must try spot if you're visiting Minneapolis.

Being a breakfast aficionado, I have no idea why it took me so long to get to Al's. My husband, who is out of the house a lot more than me, has been there several times. He has been trying to get me to go there for months. And finally we made it in February. At the time, with all the political things going on in Minneapolis, Yelp actually told me I could not write a review at the time. So I am glad now that I can come back and leave this five-star for them. So as many have said, Al's is about as old school diner as you can get. One line of stools, 14 seats or something like that. Just like Matt's Bar, there's an impossibly tiny grill and the chef makes the most amazing things on it! My husband adores the wally blues pancakes. I do think they are super tasty. They have nuts and berries and are just about the most tasty pancake you've ever had. Get one to share even if you order something else. He got the corned beef hash, which looked like basically everything you would ever want that dish to be. I got the classic benedict (the dish by which I judge all breakfast places). It was SO GOOD. It's an english muffin and a big thick slice of ham, plus the perfectly poached eggs. But the real true thing that makes this dish just baller is the generous helping of hollandaise sauce. Thick and luscious and seriously the most lemony hollandaise I have ever ever tasted. It was so good. I tried to be a lady but eventually was just sticking my finger in the leftover sauce and licking it like a toddler. I would have seriously licked the plate. The guy behind the counter smiled and said, "Yeah, our hollandaise sauce will ruin you." And he was right. Can't wait to go back for another helping. Cash only, no bathroom, street parking. Come prepared. We happened to go close to the 1 p.m. closing time and didn't have to wait at all. Pro tip.

Went right at open, 6am, and the place (10 seats) was already mostly full. It's about as old-timey diner as you can get. Wood paneling, cash only, watching the line cooks work, and a-la-carte menu. Everyone was friendly and I love the inclusive, anti-ice vibe. Unfortunately that's kind of where the highlights end and mediocrity begins. I would describe everything as "fine" but that may be partially due to my pancake preferences. They were definitely the dense and, well, slightly gummy pancakes I don't really like. That's opposite the crispy, lacy ones at Al's and fluffy buttermilk ones at Our Kitchen. Not to mention it's like $3/oz for actual maple syrup. My partner got an egg, sausage, toast meal and it is what says on the tin. I think it's good, and I love the community support from management, but definitely riding the "institutional" status for business. I think I'd prefer Al's if in the area and Our Kitchen if South.

We arrived and waited for a few minutes. The server eventually came out from the back and told us to sit anywhere. No greeting, no niceties. We skated over to a booth, as the floors had a layer of grime on them and were very slippery. The decorations were very cool. We definitely got the 50s diner vibe. Our server came over and took our order. She had zero personality. There were no introductions and she kept the conversation to one word sentences. She treated us like she'd rather have us leave then stay an eat. We were friendly throughout the dining experience. We did notice that the server was very pleasant with the other staff and all the male patrons, calling them "hon" and asking them if they need anything else. She did not extend any of these courtesies to our table of two women. It was bizarre and completely ruined our final experience in St. Paul. The food was overly expensive for very so-so diner food. The sausage patties were dried out. The eggs were overcooked. The rest was just fine, but not worth the price of over $40 for two basic meals (during the early bird time period) and two coffees. Lastly, it seemed like the smoke from the flat top was vented, but there was a smell of old cooking oil lingering in the restaurant. The whole experience was not good. It was one of the worst dining experiences we've had, and we do not expect or require a lot. We make no alterations to our food and we're friendly diners and tip well.
