Cook Out has by far the best pulled pork barbecue sandwich in the area. I've been there enough now to know that they're always consistent in their preparation. Their Coleslaw is perfection. It's pure coleslaw, just like I like it, without sauce or mayonnaise. They have an extensive list of milkshake flavors, which I'm told are amazing. A few are seasonal. My continuous dieting has kept me from trying them. But when December arrives I may splurge calories on an Egg Nog Shake. Anytime I'm in the area, or close to the area I'll stop and buy enough for two meals. Each sandwich is wrapped in a thick heavy aluminum foil type wrap, which keeps the bun soft in the refrigerator. The coleslaw is best for me on the side. But there's never enough for the second day. Yesterday I ordered two side orders of coleslaw. They were the same small size of the "slaw on the side" ones. I know they must have larger containers. Next time I'm going to be more descriptive in my order. The personnel are friendly and helpful. Every time I've been, regardless of time, the same woman has been at the register. The location is just off Military Highway. The storefront appears to be on that major thoroughfare. But the parking lot is entered and faces Valley Drive. If approaching from the south there is no curb cut. One had to make a U turn to reach Valley Drive. If headed north from the restaurant I continue on Valley Drive and take a right on Raby Road which takes you to a traffic signal on Military Highway. The storefront is attractive and captures one's attention. The inside is spacious with fast food type booths that are larger than most. The walls are decorated with hangings such as one featuring the Old Dominion Monarchs. There were once rumors of a store being built in the Haygood area. So far that hasn't happened. After getting out of the Hospital Saturday, adjusting to a new medication and having another Doctors appointment yesterday afternoon, we were just too tired to cook dinner. Or chicken nuggets at 9? This place has you covered. The food is average, nothing to crave for, but it's filling and really aside from 7-11 who's going to give you a corn dog and onion rings at midnight? Love these burgers! I got the cheddar bacon burger. The bacon was crispy! I would prefer a cheddar cheese slice but did still like the cheese sauce on the burger. In Wichita, we have nothing like this. I loved the Cajun fries and wis I hadn't shared them. My daughter liked her chicken nuggets and asked for Cajun seasoning on them. I Walked in at 9:40PM with several patrons inside around the cashier. Apparently it was just a social hour for the young employees as they quickly told me the "lobby is closed!" I first experienced Cook Out driving home from Florida and loved it. The closest one to me was Fredericksburg VA, but now they have one open in Manassas. The Cook-Out and I became friends from my days spent in Richmond, VA. I feel in love with it there and prayed for the day when it made its way to Hampton Roads. Well, it made its way to Newport News, but no close enough. So then I learned it had moved to JANAF. It's new and it's in a busy location. There are two lines and you're supposed to pick the shorter of the two. You also have the option of parking in the lot as you drive in or in the gravel lot next door. Don't park in the Taco Bell lot or they will tow your car (as I was warned). Me, being an expert in ordering Cook-Out, got the usual 1/4lb tray with half hush puppies and fries. I also ordered a Banana Pudding milkshake. The burger was decent. I swear they've gotten smaller. The hush puppies were good, the fries were meh, and the shake was great. I wanted to inform your cooperation about a recent visit on May 13, 2020 at 10:45 p.m. at your Norfolk, Virginia location on North Military Highway. I was greeted by the drive thru teller (a woman) and then was immediately informed that they could only accept cash payments; understandable, things happen. I gave the suggestion to maybe place a sign at the beginning of the drive thru to let customers know that this method would be the only method of payment that could be accepted as to not be stuck in (the very slow moving) drive thru as my family and I were due to the cars ahead. A male then comes on the speaker and I was returned with a sarcastic rude response of, "this is not Chic-Fil-A, we don't stand outside and hold signs." Unacceptable! If I were rude in my deposition, that would be one thing. But to give such a rude, disrespectful, and unprofessional response is beyond. To make matters worse, none of the visible employees were wearing masks or gloves. I have patronized Cookout since my early college days in North Carolina and was elated to hear that they would be coming to the Hampton Roads area about 7 years ago. Though my business is just of one, I refuse to pay money to an establishment that treats customers as though they mean nothing. Also, the employees should be more that willing to accept honest and respectful advice and criticism; that is a part of customer service. I'm posting this non recommended review because I think it's spot on: I have been going to Cookout for more than half my life. I grew up in North Carolina where it all started and I love going there as often as my wallet allows, which considering the awesome prices is more than I should care to admit. I LOVE their burgers. They aren't pre-manufactured, frozen, flat bricks of filler, they are real hamburger patties cooked on a real grill. People who complain about the "hype" are probably looking for gourmet food. THIS IS NOT IT.... It is delicious backyard cookout with your family on fourth of July food! Just today I got a delicious burger, corn dog, fries, and large swet tea for under $6... Try going to any other "have it your way" burger joint and get the same thing.... And people want to complain about cheese being like what $0.50 extra (BTW my $6 included a CHEESEburger). If you don't like North Carolina BBQ, then don't get it. It has vinegar... Just don't do it and don't complain. If you LIKE NC BBQ then get it... Also, to those who dislike getting a corndog for a side.... why? It's delicious... With the Cookout Tray you get a main entree of either a burger, sandwich, or chicken, then you can get 2 sides, fries, hushpuppies, coleslaw, chicken nuggets, corndog (Perfect for splitting a meal with a young child)... take your pick!
