I've heard so much about Cook Out but never experienced it until tonight. I'm not a fast food person. I'm in a continuous calorie counting mode. I save my calories for special treats. So I wasn't sure how I would feel about this spot that has drawn such praise. Tonight I was gifted a barbecue sandwich with coleslaw on the side from this Janaf area location. It was the best barbecue sandwich I've ever had. The barbecue was perfectly prepared with a sauce that had a little bit of a kick, just enough hot to really add to the taste. The pulled pork couldn't have been better. It had absolutely no hint of fat. Normally I order barbecue without a bun because the bun overpowers the barbecue. Not so with Cook Out. The bun was small & flat and the barbecue itself was the main course of the sandwich. The coleslaw was perfect. It was prepared without all the sauce that some restaurants apply in an over abundance. I Walked in at 9:40PM with several patrons inside around the cashier. Apparently it was just a social hour for the young employees as they quickly told me the "lobby is closed!" I have been to this location several times. Barbecue with coleslaw and fries was my Cousins choice. I have had this combo meal before and it was very good but this time I only wanted a milkshake. They have just about any flavor you could think of. I got banana pudding and it was amazing. I first experienced Cook Out driving home from Florida and loved it. The closest one to me was Fredericksburg VA, but now they have one open in Manassas. The Cook-Out and I became friends from my days spent in Richmond, VA. I feel in love with it there and prayed for the day when it made its way to Hampton Roads. Well, it made its way to Newport News, but no close enough. So then I learned it had moved to JANAF. It's new and it's in a busy location. There are two lines and you're supposed to pick the shorter of the two. You also have the option of parking in the lot as you drive in or in the gravel lot next door. Don't park in the Taco Bell lot or they will tow your car (as I was warned). Me, being an expert in ordering Cook-Out, got the usual 1/4lb tray with half hush puppies and fries. I also ordered a Banana Pudding milkshake. The burger was decent. I swear they've gotten smaller. The hush puppies were good, the fries were meh, and the shake was great. I wanted to inform your cooperation about a recent visit on May 13, 2020 at 10:45 p.m. at your Norfolk, Virginia location on North Military Highway. I was greeted by the drive thru teller (a woman) and then was immediately informed that they could only accept cash payments; understandable, things happen. I gave the suggestion to maybe place a sign at the beginning of the drive thru to let customers know that this method would be the only method of payment that could be accepted as to not be stuck in (the very slow moving) drive thru as my family and I were due to the cars ahead. A male then comes on the speaker and I was returned with a sarcastic rude response of, "this is not Chic-Fil-A, we don't stand outside and hold signs." Unacceptable! If I were rude in my deposition, that would be one thing. But to give such a rude, disrespectful, and unprofessional response is beyond. To make matters worse, none of the visible employees were wearing masks or gloves. I have patronized Cookout since my early college days in North Carolina and was elated to hear that they would be coming to the Hampton Roads area about 7 years ago. Though my business is just of one, I refuse to pay money to an establishment that treats customers as though they mean nothing. Also, the employees should be more that willing to accept honest and respectful advice and criticism; that is a part of customer service. The combos are cheap you get the burger, two sides(quesdilla, nuggets, fries, etc) and the drink is LARGE. The typical 1/4 burger is slightly smaller than expected. The only detractor is the location this place is always packed. they do stay open until 3am though. read more

I'm posting this non recommended review because I think it's spot on: I have been going to Cookout for more than half my life. I grew up in North Carolina where it all started and I love going there as often as my wallet allows, which considering the awesome prices is more than I should care to admit. I LOVE their burgers. They aren't pre-manufactured, frozen, flat bricks of filler, they are real hamburger patties cooked on a real grill. People who complain about the "hype" are probably looking for gourmet food. THIS IS NOT IT.... It is delicious backyard cookout with your family on fourth of July food! Just today I got a delicious burger, corn dog, fries, and large swet tea for under $6... Try going to any other "have it your way" burger joint and get the same thing.... And people want to complain about cheese being like what $0.50 extra (BTW my $6 included a CHEESEburger). If you don't like North Carolina BBQ, then don't get it. It has vinegar... Just don't do it and don't complain. If you LIKE NC BBQ then get it... Also, to those who dislike getting a corndog for a side.... why? It's delicious... With the Cookout Tray you get a main entree of either a burger, sandwich, or chicken, then you can get 2 sides, fries, hushpuppies, coleslaw, chicken nuggets, corndog (Perfect for splitting a meal with a young child)... take your pick! We went here for dessert only on a recent vacation to the VA Beach area. The service was speedy and the price very inexpensive for what we received. I loved the college theme of this particular location which was still packed 1 hour before closing (mostly with teens and early 20's individuals), though I am not sure if this is common at all of their locations.
